My suggestion to let the kiddies at Anuban one and two at our sachool watch a funny English cartoon every day wasn't understood by the superiors. Even offering free DVD's wasn't welcome. Okay, forget it then.....

    But why English cartoons?

        1. They'll be familiar with the English language and its sounds, without always looking into a hangovered face.

        2. They want to know what's happening in the cartoon and soon understand certain words.

        3. Replaces many foreign and Thai English teachers who're basically wasting the kiddies' time. :D

    Just for the record ...

This idea was very practical and proven .

After 20 hours of saturation of a language children begin to learn associations.

Babies learn Dada by the sound .

    Dog .etc.

The Thai teachers see themselves as far superior to us.

When I sent a note (corrections for an English paper ) to the school the boy was punished.

These people are messed up in general

  2. Ten years ago I donated 3 computers ( bought from a closing Internet store cheaply) to the High school.

i also printed up three basic English lessons from an Australian English program's study sheet.

I was told later ...the teachers used the computers eventually for themselves.

And the 1000 print and illustrated English introduction sheets never saw daylight.

The child attending , brought home a Thai English study book ...littered with Errors , that showed a picture of a farang drunk in a bar and the words "" immoral people come to Thailand and bring bad ways with them""

Another misspelt a few animals .

And "" good morning / afternoon  Farang "" was exclusively taught as being acceptable interaction with a westerner.

"...although I believe he is trying his best to lead the country into better times."

I believe he is trying to make Thailand conform to his own idea of what Thailand should be. Loyal and unquestioning. He isn't interested in what is good for the people, though that's what he says. What he does shows he is interested in maintaining the status quo of privilege and wealth obtained by dishonest means.

    "Getting the decent Thai elite"

I don't believe there are any decent Thai elite for the same reason as there are no vegetarian sharks. They didn't get where they are by being decent.

"and getting the boys already at the trough to give it up is even more unlikely"

That seems likely. The answer is to treat them like a dog who bites the hand which has been feeding it too well.

"...it might be an excuse to delay the election until other questions are answered."

That as an excuse seems highly likely, that nice Mr Prayuth will probably calculate the international community would swallow that whole. Many people think that elephants are a good solution to problems, as they used to be in ancient days - they had a necessary function to perform at that time. Times have changed, mankind has grown as a species and no longer needs beasts of burden. As the rogue elephants in some national parks show clearly, untrained and unrestrained elephants are usually the cause of problems, not the solution to them. Too big, too powerful, people fear them and they attack people who get in their way. No good at all. though of course, I have no idea at all how elephants found their way into this conversation..

Yes elites are like sharks tearing the flesh of victims ....

These days they are endangered so I am told.

Protected.....but some will always hunt them down kill them and cut out their jaws.

    Right!...not as bad....definitely a lot worse!!!

Singapore is struggling with Zika and yet  is diligent in the fight and transparent in reporting. Neither of those characteristics seem available in Thailand

Yes sir , you make an important differential between the two Nations.

One is not in denial and diligent in its efforts.

Thailand we are learning is trying to conceal the outbreaks and rapid transmission rates.

  5. Westerners( and other thinking people )take assurances from a military government that also "" assures"" all is normal after multi able bomb attacks ((and no culprits captured, ) with very little confidence.

Ignoring a world health body to believe a third world junta is ludicrous in the extreme.

Violence against westerners, growing xenophobic sentiment, assaults , deaths, bombings , safety lapses , carnage on sea and road , unsuitable requirements in medical care and now Zika make tourism there risky.

This is with. Civil unrest brewing also.

Insurance companies are simply raising the costs of cover and in some cases refusing under junta law clauses.

    Go elsewhere folks....stay safe.

The hospitals could be filling with people and under suppression laws not allowed to reveal the extent this virus has caught hold there.

    Take the world body advice.

    Stay away

I am more or less the same as Emster! I have just retired after teaching English at Unis in three countries over the past 24 years, being an IELTS examiner, doing Teacher Training and devising exams using CEFR. I have an MBA, an MA and some other tickets.

Joking about perpetual cycles aside, how do I become one of these "Super Teachers", or even become involved in a minor way? Contact the BC? I don't want to teach young kids.

You are farang ......keep away from Thai please

    As a cautionary reminder to those speculating;

    - One does not look oneself if a chronic illness takes a turn for the worse. We see this with people with liver disease, diabetes etc.

    - People who have had a minor stroke or heart attack certainly  do not act themselves. They can carry on for days not knowing they are   seriously ill until they collapse.

    - People can be preoccupied with personal matters and seem off. They can be distracted and suffer an injury by tripping or falling etc.

I have no idea as to who this person is or what his condition is. I do believe we  owe him the basic courtesy of not making outlandish assumptions. I do hope he is still alive and that he is  soon located.

Forgive the speculation ....but we are also dealing with Thailand here.

The assumption that he is ill ....has a condition is as valid as him needing to quickly leave .

Fear and corrupt threats ....Blackmail ....authorities .....foul play.

With respect to next of Kin ....he may resurface .....it's happened before

  8. Thais I feel are misplaced getting their own to teach a language not native to them.

Extremely good Thai English speakers fail to understand phrases.

Example ...."" She had had that particular adverse reaction before to peanuts""

The teacher ended up teaching "" she had no liking before now to peanuts""

You can see how a person in Thailand with a peanut problem can easily die?

one more foreigner who bite the dust in this death trap country.... i completely lost the count of the huge number of dead foreigner here.

    i keep telling you, beware!

This advice is sadly not heard ....though many of us here know its very very profound in its gravity and context.

    Beware.....indeed

The news media continues dutifully to pretend that the "Cabinet" is a Cabinet, that the "NLA" is a legislative assembly, and that the "PM" is a prime minister....

    :coffee1:

Yes ....that's the real intension of press releases......

The other real stories are no longer told .

Gulags filling with journalists missing from usual columns .

Thailand approves this or that.....( Pretending they are even Thailand as a whole)

Rumours of this or that .....smoke and mirrors ..

Light hearted stuff....A new plane .....Pokemon tourism ....thanking Rio Competitors .Good morals ....

    Targets and polls ...

    Thailand is gone.

Its really being taken over and closing to reality.

    Gaols brimming with innocents ....

    No reports now.

    Bombers on loose .

    Violence.

    Ripe for civil major unrest

I remember a "good person" in Thai politics from a few years ago; don't remember his name, but I can still see the look of defeat on his face when he quit.

His reasons for quitting were that he couldn't find any good people in government to work with him. He was a genuine person with a good heart and a commitment to doing the right thing and helping to make life better for poor Thai people.

The greatest obstacle he encountered when trying to raise support in getting something done was the "what's in it for me?" response he would invariably get from his colleagues in government.
I can understand Gen. Prayut's sentiments, but certainly don't envy his task of achieving the goal.

Gen Prayut's is unqualified to fathom the word good
