The real Elephant in the Room is the possibility of income tax on Worldwide Income. This could be a game changer for many and would certainly discourage some from moving here and buying condos. My thinking is that they would have to announce something very soon or the earliest year where this could be applied would be 2026.

If they play that card, I definitely think that will be the final nail in the coffin and an exodus of foreign retirees.

They won't be able to use all their past claims about it being retiree friendly etc as other countries in the region, and Europe, offer better.

I am not convinced that using a Mastercard or Wise card for Thailand purchases will legally allow one to manage paying less tax in Thailand,  ... but I guess the 'jury is still out' on that topic.  I've read both sides of the 'debate' on this topic - so I guess time will tell.

I use my Wise card globally.  Typically before I travel , when I speculate I can get a good price for buying a foreign currency, I will buy the amount I think I will need for the next month or so, using the 'strongest' currency I have to buy such foreign currency.

The Thai baht is still pretty strong, so its a bit difficult to adopt that (above) strategy with Thailand.

The Wise card being a debit card means it can't be used for everything that a credit card can be used for, but it can still be used for a lot.  I suspect it can be used for most Thailand purchases where a Thai bank debit or credit card can also be used.

I have a Thai bank credit card (earns me points) that I use instead (of a Wise debit card) in Thailand.

My understanding is that with Wise, you are purely using the ATM service, which you pay for, and the money is not going through the Thai banking system into an account that is linked to a card.

    I read this when researching.

Well the import money thing is one time on purchase.

For expensive condos of course the tax bracket would be high.

I think a foreigner can import the money to a Thai to gift the real estate in the Thai's name without import tax but then you don't own it.

We wouldn't own it, and why should we do it?

We have options and alternatives to Thailand, and I, for one, will not be held to ransom just because my partner is Thai.

So just change back to a retirement visa if that ever happens.  No big deal.

That's my plan, applying in Cambodia next month.

My retirement doesn't expire while July.

I want to get it before any further changes come in to play (if it gets abused, already agents arranging trips for DTV visas), and I am informed once you have it, you can just hold on to it, without using it until later in the year.

Aren't Non-O Retirement visas/extensions also abused all the time by people without the 800K/65K who just pay agents to fake the money in a Thai bank requirement?  Has the Non-O retirement had sweeping changes due to those abuses?

As long as you meet the stated requirements and don't use any sketchy workarounds I don't see why the DTV would be picked on any differently than say the Non-O retirement.

    P.S. What a week to be a Red! 😀

I have to agree with @Phillip9, as you are aware, immigration is directly involved, even through agents, with the Non-0 process of extensions.

With the DTV being granted through the MFA, the immigration noses could well get put out of joint, as if enough people move to them, it would greatly have a bearing on one of their lucrative income streams.

Yes, Real Madrid sorted, and Man City slaughtered, it should have been 5-0, but we will take 2-0!

Even at this early stage now, it's Liverpool’s title to lose, I just hope they don't fall to pieces or get injury hit, plus the contracts of Salah and Co becoming a distraction.

it's jealousy over young people getting long stay visas...

I have no jealousy, and I am contemplating getting one.

My issue, same as other long term expats is that once it gets abused, which it will, how swift and what sweeping changes will come into effect, changing the criteria in obtaining one.

If I was to get the soft power under medical reasons, I have the ability to prove, I need to get a medical procedure done by an ENT surgeon every 4–6 months, so it could work for me.

Leaving every six months? I already do that on retirement visa.

Well if you need to understand whats going on in America (about anyhting) from your perch in the Kop, I suggest www.realclearpolitics.com. As to January 6, as the trial date draws closer, more and more will be coming out. Watch because in the USA, everyhting comes out sooner or later.

    I'll stay here, thanks!

Heard enough about Trump for a lifetime.

Fairly obvious how you have spent your time in Thailand, creating a blinkered view with everything under the same umbrella, completely ignoring what was said.

The OP is about temporary relationships, dating apps in a nutshell, but according to you they are only "prostitution apps" in Thailand. That falang mentality again.

Prostitutes date back centuries but it was the western prudes that attached a stigma. In biblical times goods were often used in payment for sexual favours, not much different to the ways in many countries.

You are talking a lot but not saying much.

Payment for goods and valuables by sexual services is the definition of prostitution.

    A temporary relationship?

You mean like the bigoted way ISIS and Muslim fighters got married ' for the night '  and divorced the day after, so they could bypass the laws on not having sex outside marriage!

Ridiculous, just call it what it is, no shame in it, unless you want to see it that way, but don't try putting lipstick on as pig.

And neither are the overwhelming majority of other nations potentially facing Trump's tariffs.

But when have facts mattered to some posters in this thread?

They don't allow the truth to get in the way of a good story.
