  1. Next month my gf and I fly from our hometown of Narathiwat to Chiang Mai with Thai Smile. All on one ticket, with a stopover at BKK.

I have never traveled like this before, let alone during Covid times.

Does TS allow us to just stay in the domestic(?) transfer zone and label our bagage through to CNX?

    Is all applicable signage clear?

The Southern Insurgency has seen over 7,000 people killed in just 16 years and there's currently no end in sight. Maybe it will need another 14 years to make people see sense and talk without preconditions.

The number of incidents and victims has decreased significantly though, even in the four+ years I've been living here.

The first question that many people ask me when they learn I live in the deep south is "Aren't you afraid?"

I'm not and in practice there's very little to be afraid of besides hitting a cow on the road at night.

Spent a lot of time in Betong during the 90's. Arriving from the Malaysian side, as was working in Kelantan. Found it a very laid back and relaxed location, and preferable to the other option, Sungai Golok.

Had some bombings, the last about three years back, so that will always be a concern. Having any level of security is not an ideal look for a touted tourist location, so planned numbers will likely be difficult, if not impossible, to attain, even without the severe impact of covid.

The new airport will make it a much easier trip from other parts of Thailand and that will likely drive the initial (internal) tourist influx. However, I would think that the prime target was the Chinese market, so, ideal to head there, early doors, for those of us lucky to still be in Thailand and able to get in while the going is good. That will definitely include me, to refresh my memories whilst I am still able to generate new ones.

Without any foreign tourists most bars and hotels will probably stay closed as at least 80 percent of visitors is Malaysian.

Some may come from these translation CD's that they use here.

    - Mix A Whole Porker - Yam Moo Yang

    - Forces Fish - Pla Plala

    - Shrimp Cooks Whore Dust - Tam Yam Kung

    - Meat Roasts a Waterfall - Nua Yang Nam Tok

    - Oval Sunlight Fish is One - Sundried fish

    - Penetrate Pickling Shellfish - Somtam Hoi Dong

    - Penetrate the Cucumber - Somtam Pu Tam

    etc.

This and many more can be eaten at Pala Beach in Ban Chang, if you can stop laughing.....

Does such a menu really exist?

Now seems like they are mostly importing the virus

At least the Thai government tries to stop them before they take it too far into the country. I live in Narathiwat and this province and the rest of the Three Provinces region has been hit hard by the virus. Maybe it's for the better that borders stay closed for foreigners. Thai people are of course welcome to return, but are - thank God - subject to extensive health measures.

I'd say being in Egypt is an underlying medical ... Especially if you aren't Egyptian.

I live in Southern Thailand and many Muslims from here are studying or have studied in the Middle East, importing necessary knowledge, incl. English and Arabic language skills and knowledge of The Holy Quran, back to Thailand.

"Does anyone now feel at risk when they go out and about"?

I was feeling fine about going here and there but lately a little wary, probably due to the recent spikes around the globe and the news this morning of people arriving and not being quarantined.

Not at all. I teach at a school of over 4000 students and 250 teachers and staff and you can bet that, in spite of the lightly enforced anti-spread measures, if one person gets infected the virus will soon spread throughout the school.

I'm just doing my job and if I catch Covid anywhere, then Alhamdulilah, it's God's will. So be it. I'm not afraid to die.

    Are we still banned?

Apparently not. I rode the bus all the way from Bangkok to Hat Yai. Granted, it was a different company, but there's no reason to think there'd be any problem whatsoever when trying to catch a ride on a state bus. Except the comfort and ability to sleep.
