Motorcycle Rider Dies in High-Speed Collision
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
I'd say that is not a given at all. It also depends a lot of what the SUV was doing. The Fortuner was reversing at 120 kmh and the motorcycle was riding at a very pedestrian 60kmh... I get the point you are trying to make, but there are better 'accidents' with which to make it... this crash has a very 'occam's razor' aspect to it.... -

Why do you over analyse it ??? Someone on a motorcycle was riding recklessly with complete disregard for his own safety and that of others, speeding and undertaking on the frontage road into a stationary vehicle.... How much more 'analysis is needed' ??.... Sometimes people just do really stupid stuff... this guy did. -

You mean you are the only person on this forum you believe has an understanding of road safety... ok, I get it. Are you going to copy and paste a long article about how its not an idiots fault when they break all traffic rules and die ? -
Motorcycle Rider Dies in High-Speed Collision

Let´s just say like this Mr R. Smith. Looking at the picture and the damage. Do you think he was driving enough fast to do the work, or do you think it´s fake news? Just wondering. When will you seize your stupid posting? You see, it doesn´t matter what the F-K-G speedo was stuck at. That was kind of my point... the speedo reading is rather irrelevant, as irrelevant as using it as some form of evidence is flawed.... ... as written.. looking at the rear of the Fortuner, the speed was 'jeffing fast'... Not sure where you are getting the 'fake news' comment from - you are reading something into my comment that isn't there. -
The irony of an "expresso" aficionado! Indeed... .....can't go back an edit it either !! ... not only that... its a typo I frequently make....

Thats what I thought... but then I figured, does it matter if motorcyclist are permitted in the tunnel or not ?? The guy still 'rode off the road' it appears... he'd be in serious condition wherever it was. A 'cover being removed' resulting in the death of someone... Thats the 3rd story I've read today of a 'cover to something' being removed leading to death or serious injury.

I have never seen a cheap grinder able to grind fine expresso. Grind is usually uneven and as I said not fine enough for an espresso machine. And a 250 Baht grinder is probably a blade grinder, the worst of all because of uneven grind. 100% correct.. Grind is one of the most important facets of a decent extraction from any type of brewing method... As mentioned, if controlling a grinder by 'time' its a blade grinder.... and its not going to be any good... may as well go for 3 in 1.

QED - absolutely not and that is the attitude that prevents progress. Road safety is a public health issue. the concept of "idiot" or "bad driver" is just plain stupid. Homun behaviour is pretty much constant the world over - what a good road safety plicyty does is protect people from the vagaries of driving Some countries are particularly good at doing this - the unfortunate side effect is that drivers from those countries mistakenly thing they should take the credit - they aren't good drivers, they are just proeteted by a good road safety policy and system. You mean... some countries educate and police the road users so fewer of them act like idiots... and for those who do act like idiots the consequences are minimised through road design. You may think this guy was not an idiot for riding a high speed and undertaking on the frontage road... most others would think thats one of the most idiotic things a person could do on a motorcycle.... -
Flipping ek... thats brutal... He's working away to support then and this grade A1 mercenary biyatch pulls this stunt... For anyone who works away from their family, any time their child or wife gets sick and they are stuck away utterly powerless is a horrible situation.... This child needs to be removed from the family as quickly as possible... but, would the father be able to look after the child while also working ? (i.e. does he work on ships or a rig etc).... A terrible situation...

Family Demands 10m Baht Following Fatal Fall in Bangkok
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
I'd bet that was done by the locals when the cast iron covers were stolen. Probably well meaning, but it didn't work out. I'd absolutely prosecute anyone who steals the covers, or any scrap dealers who buy them. Indeed... If 'petty theft' of the manhole covers is an issue... Can't they be welded down ? -
Family Demands 10m Baht Following Fatal Fall in Bangkok
richard_smith237 replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Why? This is Thailand. I can assure you I look where I'm going and I never even take a chance on the steel plates or the concrete sewer covers. Same as having faith in pedestrian crossings. Granted, you would hope that the agencies involved have pedestrians' interests at heart. But "hope" is a dangerous assumption hereabouts. Of course, you could enact American style liability laws, and that 10 million baht payout would become chickenfeed. And the cost of living in Thailand would escalate as well. Ah... the good old... 'don't expect your western standards here response'.... ... next you be telling road users its their own fault because someone didn't bother to put cones, signs, lighting up and leaving a 2m deep hole exposed.... Ooops... that happens here often as well... But, that doesn't make it any less the responsibility of the authorities in charge of such projects. -
I was under the impression the Op was asking about beans from a roaster.... ..... not a cup of coffee from a coffee shop. But... If you want to avoid coffee because of possible associated 'issue'... go for it, but there's also a lot of other stuff you'll have to avoid on your virtue signalling tour....

Have we lost Dad to Thailand ?
richard_smith237 replied to The Cobra's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
All my pals in the UK had the same problem. Most of my colleagues at work in the UK had the same problem. All the guys I met in Thailand had the same problem. Only a couple of divorcees in my 'circle'... the same with the parents... only a couple of my friends have parents who've been divorced... Nearly all of the friends and family in my generation are over 40 and appear happily married. So.. ALL of your Pals have an issue... MOST of your colleagues in the UK have the same issue... ALL of the guys you've met in Thailand have the same problem... ... Using words like... ALL and MOST... highlights your cognitive bias to support your belief that everyone faces the same issues you have.... Your past issues have made you bitter and you peddle that repetitive bias on this forum - you can't accept that people over 40 can be happy unless they are banging a 20 year old prostitute. Correct Guess... I live in Thailand and am in my 40's... my Wife (Thai) is in her 40's... I'm very happy, I hope she is too. So perhaps you are correct, I have no 'first hand proof' that Western Women don't turn vapid and vile after 40 years old... except all those I know in happy relationships in the West. Thats the pot calling the kettle black there.... just because you are loser from that perspective, it doesn't mean every other male is. I don't expect my relationship to turn south at any point... But, if that were to happen, I doubt I'd have difficulty enjoying being on my own, or entering a relationship with a lady of any nationality, western or otherwise... solid relationships are developed through mutual respect, that seems to be something you struggle with... .....your repetitive misogynistic babbling on about how terrible western women and any woman over 40 is, and only paid younger women available for older men... highlights this... Its ok - we are not all the same and don't all have the same experiences - there are a whole spectrum of experiences so don't try and normalise your failings by attempting to peddle idea that your failures general norm....... they're the norm for some people, not all - we're all different. -
Valid point about freshness and turnover rate... This is why I like these guys... https://coffeeculture.asia/coffee-category/roasted-coffee-beans-thailand/arabica-coffee/# Quite often I order, and they respond asking if I mind waiting an extra few days (up to a week)... because they have run out and are roasting a fresh batch on xx date etc... I used to find that frustraiting until I realised its actually a very good thing - freshness guaranteed. That said - It is my understanding that freshly roast coffee should be stored for a couple of weeks to allow the CO2 to escape (or something similar).

Motorcycle Rider Dies in High-Speed Collision

Completely agree. Disagree... its easy to understand how and why a lot of accidents occur in Thailand - some of them occur through simply plain idiocy - riding a bike on a highway at 160kmh (or their about) is a clear factor, as is moving across to the near (left) side median to undertake. Its quite easy to identify a lot of the issues, from poor road layout, poor road markings, ineffective policing, and terrible road safety education. In this case, poor rider education and a lack of defensive riding behavior is surely a key root cause which factored into the riders demise. Anyone can easily draw this conclusion and it does not make 'us' who so readily draw such a conclusion bad drivers. -
This is not a rare occurrence in Thailand.... Unmarked road works.... no warnings, cones, lights, barriers.... and no accountability for those workers leaving the road in this condition, no accountability of those supervising them and no accountability at all of those in positions of authority and responsibility over such construction. Its one of the reasons I will not ride my motorcycle at night. Its one of the reasons I will not drive on high-ways outside of cities at night. Years ago, the first and last time I drove at night - I saw a strange, odd looking shiny thing in the distance, I slowed and drove right up to it... It was only then I saw the 'end of the road'... the road has just stopped and was marked with branches and CD's... I was able to go around, in some area's they'd managed to put up some lights (fluorescent strip lights) to mark the road works... I'm quite sure someone that night would have hurt themselves driving into the ditch in the muddle of the lane made by road workers carrying out some task or other.... but with no regard anyone else after they finished for the day. Until people in positions of authority, company owners, and managers etc, are held accountable, these issues will continue to happen the the innocent will get hurt. This isn't an issue of 'careless driving'... no one expects there to be a huge unmarked hole in the road...

Motorcycle Rider Dies in High-Speed Collision

They don't... The speedo was stuck at 160 kmh... The G force on impact could just as easily have swung the needle to zero, or higher (if in fact it was a needle and not a digital speedo)... Thus the interpretation of speed based on the 'damaged speedo' reading alone is highly flawed... That said - looking at the rear of the fortuner... the speed was 'jeffing fast'... 160 kmh is as good a guess as any.... could have been more, unlikely to be less than 80 kmh (just guessing from the damage). -
"As investigations continue, the initial reports indicate that vessel maintenance was not a contributing factor to this incident". Yet it was also reported that the boat "lost control due to snapped steering ropes"... and "Equipment failure"... So you've chosen to ignore the below quoted issues... and instead quoted the 'face saving' comment that 'vessel maintenance was not a contributing factor'... LL - You've cherry picked your response to argue a comment and chosen to ignore other obvious points of the article that contradict your response.

Remembering your V8 Muscle car........
richard_smith237 replied to transam's topic in Thailand Motor Discussion
Always loved the V8…. I was born too late for the Muscle car era, but always fancied a Cobra… The only V8 I did get was in Range Rover, it’s still has that V8 rumble when gunning it… & of course the I’d see the fuel gauge dropping… -
A 'Pint' just isn't a real Pint in Thailand.
richard_smith237 replied to bob smith's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Outside of the uk the word ‘pint’ has just become an international colloquialism for a ‘larger glass’ of something… …in Europe a pint never existed, it was always ‘1/2 litre’… but Brits still order a ‘pint’….
