  1. I've been to the optician by the UN Cafe at least times intending to make a purchase but have yet to do so. Not impressed at all.

Why ??? ok the staff are not fluent in English but he's the best around and his staff ,he told me this morning, have been with him for a long ,long time.

In fact he said he was ready to retire but felt an obligation to keep the place going for them.He knows I have refererred many people to him but he's looking to slow down a mite.

This sounds more like a: "I paid triple, but they held my hand like a four year-old." Do you even know the difference between Optometrist and Ophthalmologist? Did you happen to notice the number of people stating they've gotten bad prescriptions in Thailand?

  2. Those bus routes are somewhere in between unreliable and non-existent. There built two of those newish bus stops close to where I live (Suthep), and I have never seen a single person board a bus from the stops, in the two years that I have been up here. On paper, it looks like I could take one all the way to Arcade for 10-20 thb, but it ain't gonna happen.

  3. just digressing slightly, blar blar bar, closing on Saturday, moving to by dawang dang in a few months, lots of freebies sat night

I wasn't a regular, but they had a nice run, and seemed to know how to survive, Relatively cheap beer and pretties. To all the pretentious clowns, who insist on stale imports and no girls at 300 per beer, I say stick a Chang Bottle up your butt. Those bars have been having issues with the noise problems going back to the previous coup. I wonder how much longer Dayli will stay.....in both cases, the land is worth 100-200K per wah.

Once they've stuck a Chang bottle up their butt, what should they do next? I'm asking on behalf of a friend.

In many cases; they should likely warn their "partners."

  5. I've been waiting for all the pushy/loud New Year's visitors to leave before patronizing the bars. I did go out NYE, and there were about 1/4 the usual number of hostesses. One thing that has become clear is that Thai businesses do not ramp up for potentially very busy holidays. It's more like it's when people shut down and take time off. Apparently, it's not a good time to have a medical emergency, either. CMU was out for a week or two, and that may explain the lack of talent/eye candy at the bars. Bye-Bye holiday revelers, hello uni-girls. I've got a Tiger promo scheduled for the next day or two....4 large for 200...I'll report back.

  6. I would splurge and spend 20-25 on one of the numerous mini-busses that come down the Expressway. You just exit down the stairs, before you cross the Expessway to SRT, but it's the same covered overpass. Wait for van is less than five minutes.....I can't imagine the SRT being nearly that frequent, but if you are going to CircuspantsLand, err, I mean KSR, then you can walk from Hualumpong.....about 3-4 km, though.

  7. I've noticed Satit CMU has their O-net scores posted on a bill-board in front of the school. I assume O-net is the standardized test they use in Thailand.

Cost of private school in the US...first one I looked at was 14000 usd per year for Catholics add 2000 for non-Catholics...and about 600 in misc. fees. They say, once you are in graduate school, it really doesn't matter, where you went to undergrad. I think it is even truer that once you are in uni, it will never matter, how much your dad (or mother's boyfriend) shelled out for private high school. The admissions officers seem to favor students from less affluent areas, as long as they meet the requirements. The schools diversify geographically, also.

  8. Ask the yellow if the go to Hang Dong...that will indicate they run the same route. Just push the button at AP Plaza. Also, you will be amazed at how much more reasonable reds are as you get a few hundred meters from the bus stations away from their crony pack. Same with arcade. I've been avoiding the taxi-meter stand at DM for 12 years.....pedestrian walkway to the expressway...saves stand fee and wait....or I just jump on a van for 20-25 thb or bus for less, and they all are going to BTS.

  9. The yellow songtaews that park at CM Gate, kind of behind 7-11, run frequently, and will take you to AP Plaza intersection for 10 THB. A lovely 800 m walk to the terminal, if you are traveling light. You could also catch one of the many reds from the corner for 20 THB. I think you could get a tuk-tuk or a red for 100 from Moon Mueang....especially from 6am to 7 pm. I've done it for 60 before. later evening hours are always more challenging, but I wouldn't pay TT more than 100, because a metered taxi willbe about a 100, if you wisely make them use the meter.

  10. As a retired Clinical Psychologist, may I suggest having him tested and evaluated before going on with the prodigy and thinking his brain will stagnate if nothing is done, it will not, but he could be shamed into "dropping" his ability by his peers. Incidentally, never should you call a person, regardless of whom they may be, a prodigy without being able to substantiate the comment without documentation and verifiable facts. Your word alone is not sufficient evidence to support your claim.

Then how come every public school that I have ever worked at, was almost as loose with the "gifted" label, as they are with free lunches for the needy. And then there is the ADHD farce. Virtually none have had a PT Scan that would be the only way to confirm this disorder, yet you can have 10 students in a class heavily medicated with toxic drugs, just because they chase kids at recess, or won't be quiet when Ms. Widbutt is reading some amazingly boring piece of fiction.

  11. For my second attempt to get an up to date eyeglass prescription, I went to the highly touted, and often TVF recommended optician close to UN Cafe. They refused to do a basic eye exam, when I told them I would be ordering online, but was willing to pay a fair price for an exam. Maybe that is something they started for high season. Not a customer in the store; four employees.

For my third attempt, I went into an optician located to the back of KSK. I asked how much for an eye exam. I thought she said "three," but actually she was saying "free." I stated that I may not be buying glasses at this time, and it was still "free." Got on the machine. Gives numbers like 1.75....the ones I have been wearing fine for 4 years are 1.0......then he does more of a manual check, and determines that I am actually a .5, which means my eyes have improved, which does happen. He wads up the computer printout like a piece of garbage. I explained to him that my hat size is 7 5/8, therefore my glasses are on the large side, including a 19 mm nose bridge, and 135 mm temples. The largest they have for nose bridge is 18 mm, in the entire store. He didn't even attempt to sell me a pair of glasses. After reading a few other reports on botched prescriptions, I am thinking these machines are way out of calibration, so be warned. I'll be sticking with my four year old prescription, from the US, for now.

  12. Instead of asking the officially uninformed, why not call UA and ask? Seems to be the simplest way get a proper answer.

If their call centre is as good as BA's, it will be a far from simple solution biggrin.png .

and anything done with a live agent will incur a fee (25 usd+). There would be a difference to upgrading it in advance, and upgrading on standby, which is a game a lot of business travelers play in the US. You see them in suits hovering around the desk at the gate. I can use miles to buy tickets at www.ual.com, even for multiple Star Alliance flights. I used to have to call them for the connecting flights on Thai, and they would only let you bypass UA flights in rare circumstances.

At UAL.com, simply login, go to my reservations, then modify/change existing reservation, it will ask you if you want to use miles or cash.

  13. I would pay 500 thb to see Jimmy Rogers speak. Faber? Go to any tourist trap bar in Chiang Mai, and you can usually find some Euro-Trash spewing the same nonsense. Listening to Jim Cramer tout Proctor and Gamble every time the market drops 1% gets a little old, too, but at least he occasionally has some good ones.
