1. Please..... have some pride in your actions, clothing appearance & personal hygiene to understand that YOU are representing ALL foreigners to the Thai people when you are in country

Says who? I represent no one bar myself nor do I require anyone to represent me.

    Daft post.

I think they sell beer at the immigration don't they?

if not I will bring my own cocktails and drink whilst I'm there in my shorts and unkempt appearance (Full Definition of UNKEMPT 1 : not combed < unkempt hair> 2 : deficient in order or neatness)

  2. pasta cafe soi 5 nimman,nice setting.

If you're in the Nimman area, you could also try "Why Not", they have outside seating, little less park like than "Pasta Cafe", but I think the Chang Beer Garden ruined the PC's ambiance.... Just one mans opinion... Not trying to get people all worked up!tongue.png

Where ever you decide to go, I wish you good food, good luck and good loving company from your GF!!!!

  3. I tried them yesterday for the first time for 50B well worth the money.

    Alright, what kind of fish?

    Fish cake or fish?

Oil type? Only ask because of my heart issues.....

No idea ,I just know it tasted ok as did the fries.

OK cool, I go out in the night, a LOT.... Should be a good time for a try!

  4. I also go regular to sausage kings restaurant he does large fish and real chips with a choice of Australian garden peas or British mushy for 99 baht or Atlantic cod and chips etc 199 baht.

I want the one in the pic, looks delicious and I will order it next time I'm at King's!!!!

  5. Coach's is on Night Safari/ Royal Flora Road, /// If you're leaving the night safari, go through the first traffic light, it's about 200 meters past on your left. -- or , if you're travelling Canal Road from CMU, come to the Night Safari Traffic Light, take a left, 200 meters on your left.

    --

Thanks, I can't wait to try it, I need my fix of American style eats!

  6. Is that the one called Coachs Pizza near the Canal Road never tried it but its close by to where I live.

Yes, the ribs are 100% awesome. The guy bought his recipe from some famous place back in the states, and brought it here. It's the one place in Thailand I've gone to eat farang food where it was actually cause the food was great, not just because I wanted a break from Thai food. Let me say it this way, if they were in the States, they would be very successful.

The pizza is good, but not out of this world good.

I should add that it is under new ownership, but as far as I can tell, nothing has changed as far as how the food is prepared.

I wanna try it, how do I get there, or what is it near?

    Coach's Pizza - Chiang Mai

  8. Dave is not the problem, so let us ask him this;

Dave please clarify the promotion, portion sizes, value of the regular price etc?

It's not like that, simply put when you have a promotion you traditionally and historically have some savings, so we take the menu price of the items in the promotion (which are public knowledge from the menu), then we see if there's a deal to be had, it's standard every restaurant has a "Special of the day or week" nothing new here, nor is my comment in any way devious or derogatory.

Most people seemed to be confused on the promotion, so if I had the menu (which I don't), I could work it out and post it, I believe it's rather basic arithmetic.....

i've attached some flyer type promotional material to clarify.

I don't understand where you are coming from.

The two for the price of one pretty well tells you what you are saving the other two are just like Dave's poster. They give a price and do not break it down into what it would cost you individually.

Admittedly you have to think a little bit to understand the poster but it is not that difficult.

Okay, done I will go there anyway!

Order off the menu (Like Always).

Order stuff to take home with me (Like Always).

Get served by staff who are usually friendly, always in clean uniforms, speak English and if they can't someone there will.

Order from Meals on Wheels (Like Always).

  9. Finally, non-overpriced Fish & Chips come to Chiang Mai..

Most restaurants price this stuff like it's solid gold.

"Finally, non-overpriced Fish & Chips come to Chiang Mai"

There used to be some guy in behind Loy Kroh, he did some good ones, gone now, if these are the same quality as his it would be the best deal I've seen for a long time.....

    So anyone try them?

  11. He's also being destructive, creating enemies. He doesn't need to do that, he's a successful businessman, that should say it all. Why he rants on here, I have no idea.

Out of curiousity, why do you rant on here, please can you tell me a restaurant where you would get the same value as the Dukes?

I like the Dukes and I like Dave, actually I'm hard pressed to find anywhere to eat in CM besides his place and say 5-10 others, but taste is personal and I eat at the establishments I can afford, if I can't I don't go on whining about the prices......

  12. Because they perpetuate the idiots here.

Let's face it, this web site has become a haven for idiots and unhappy campers and those that are afraid to let people know who they are. Hiding and complaining behind what is ThaiVisa. I have already stopped advertising for The River Market but for some reason they think I am kidding and they still have us listed there. Soon I will cancel The Duke's because the demographic of the old male dominated customer is no longer. I've said it to them before and I will say it again. "Wake UP ThaiVisa."

George, Barry, I feel for you.

While I agree that there are many creepy characters on this site, my perception has been that a large number of resturant threads are loaded with praise and worship of The Dukes , yet Dave seems to focus on the critiques and gets all bent out of shape... this thread is an example, people are simply asking about the promotion posters.... he hasn't answered or clarified that. Dukes has grown to be big player here, Dave seems to be a winey lil guy, ... oh well.

People are simply asking about..... he hasn't answered..?

Starting with the OP and half of the first dozen or so replies, how can you say that? If the OP had politely asked something along the lines of " I hope you don't mind Dave, but I came across a sticker for your place and I don't quite understand, could you explain this for me....." Then I'm sure his answer would have been quite different. The OPs post was mocking and infantile. Some of the guys here know nothing about politeness or courtesy and then, surprise , surprise get all upset when someone tells them were to go. Boohoo.

IGetting upset when someone tells them to go is one thing...i couldn't give a rats, but when you are told to ''<deleted>> off" its a whole different ballgame.....

    Dave is not the problem, so let us ask him this;

Dave please clarify the promotion, portion sizes, value of the regular price etc?

  13. Hopefully the NGO crowd will be attracted by the new pricing and leave us in peace by the river...

Incredible, what is wrong with the NGO crowd?

I like to watch them eating at the original DUKES, it's really entertaining, they walk about speaking very loudly and laughing almost always, not sure why, all I know is they are really happy and never drunk, mean or obnoxious, they seem like good people, that sure like pizza!

  14. Very strange...and not really adding up right unless prices are considerably higher at that location. A couple of the items we get often like Spaghetti Carbonara and the ribs. The Spaghetti is usually around the 300 THB mark and includes a salad. The ribs are (if I recall correctly) around the 275 THB mark for 1/2 rack so I don't understand the 'promotion' at all.

Over $20 for Spaghetti Carbonara & salad........surely it must be a family combo.

You know, I think you must be right. It's probably not fair for everyone (myself included) to make a judgment off of a flyer posted here. It could well mean a meal for 2, or family combo as you say. That would be in line with the Dukes pricing. For me personally I like the location of the original restaurant and will always go to that one.

Yup, my favorite one as well, but for me I'm lazy to walk from parking, have to wait for rainy season to end, motorbikes no problem for parking there!

  15. Relax may be he is just testing how you Duke's lover would react. I want try that 645 bath spaghetti right away!

Wow, wow and more wow! 645 Baht is a lot huh, let us review, Greek Salad, Spaghetti Carbonara, Garlic Cheese Bread.... Hmmm plus a litre of free coke, which should not be called that, as it's part of the promotion... I think.

PS: How exactly would you bath in 645 Baht?

  16. I have just read "Sticker Shock" along with all the comments, I don't understand all the fuss about the pricing? The combinations I think may very well be directed towards a sharing table of friends, but many Thai and Foreigners like to eat that way, for me I just order off the menu....

I'm wondering now is the Dukes open finally, if so does it have air conditioning? Or is it hot like on the other side like Mix, Fuji and the Japanese place beside Mix?

Also I'm curious if they can make "Long Island Ice Tea" like the River Market, in my opinion they have the best LIIT in Chiang Mai there!

While I'm at it, anyone try (if it's open) the "Strawberry Daiquiri" they make that really good at the Dukes on the river......

  17. I think they may need more than new track, maybe the ballast would be the root cause of the loose tracks, loose tracks damage very easily, especially ones that have been in use forever....

Large rocks and boulders are piled along the route (or "road" as we call it) on the ground, then the "berm" is built higher with ballast (in other words, railroad gravel). Then, wooden crossties are spaced out along the route with a 1-foot gap between each tie. Steel rails are then laid on the ties, secured to the crossties with spikes and "tie plates". Afterwards, more ballast is spread to fill the gaps between the ties.

Most of these answerers were right about drainage and stability... without these features the track would shift and immediately become unstable under the enormous weight of trains. A typical train engine weighs 398 thousand pounds and there are usually six of those pulling every freight train. A loaded train car is often around 150 thousand pounds. Imagine trying to lay the tracks on dirt... the tracks would sink, shift and fall apart, especially once the dirt became wet from rain. Even with ballast, the rugged rails bounce up and down like flimsy ribbons of steel under the weight of a moving train.

Everyone who mentioned the environment was clever, but wrong. We've been using ballast since the 1860s in the Civil War era... nobody cared about pollution back then, and ballast has no "kitty litter" properties (although that was a very clever guess). In fact spilling chemicals, grease, fuel and all manner of "acceptable contaminates" spill along the tracks and wash down through the ballast.

As you probably have imagined, new ballast must be spread on the tracks periodically as the berm (false hill the track is built on) slowly shifts and spreads to each side under the vibration of trains.

Most railroads own rock quarries to create their own ballast. Also, crossties are soaked in creosote, like telephone poles, to prevent rotting, but eventually must be replaced.

These built-up routes, which are berms, are called "fills". Places where the route must dig through the land like a trench are called "cuts". The removed dirt and rock from cuts are used to help build the base of the fills further down the line. You'll notice if you look closesly at a railroad that even in "cuts" the cut is made deeply enough to contain a small berm (mound of ballast along the route); this allows drainage, even though the railroad is recessed below normal ground level (it still has to have at least a mini-ditch down in there on each side of the tracks).

  19. Well, 10 out of 10 for perseverence, but if I wanted to eat out, the last place I would go would be a shopping mall. Why not try a real restaurant located in its own property?

I like the fact that it's easy to park there, with the rain it's nice to have the covered parking.

I'll bite, which real restaurant would you go to? With parking for a car 9as it's usually pouring the motor bike is a bit risky) that is.

The city & surrounding areas are full of them. Buy an umbrella to walk from the car? Plenty of restaurants provide staff with umbrellas.

I suppose you are right, buy an umbrella and walk, there in would be the problem, I may be just a little lazy....

Get your quotes sorted out. MESmith is certainly not lazy when it comes to walking thumbsup.gif

Hmmmm, it reads that I am lazy, not ME Smith......
