  1. Well, 10 out of 10 for perseverence, but if I wanted to eat out, the last place I would go would be a shopping mall. Why not try a real restaurant located in its own property?

I like the fact that it's easy to park there, with the rain it's nice to have the covered parking.

I'll bite, which real restaurant would you go to? With parking for a car 9as it's usually pouring the motor bike is a bit risky) that is.

The city & surrounding areas are full of them. Buy an umbrella to walk from the car? Plenty of restaurants provide staff with umbrellas.

I suppose you are right, buy an umbrella and walk, there in would be the problem, I may be just a little lazy....

  2. There are several Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai, I have tried them nearly all, but no one is really good. The owner is mostly an Italian male, the staff in the kitschen is Thai, they don't know even to make spaghettis or a good pizza. High prices by thai standard, but low quality.

Hmmmm, it would seem you are right about the owner being male and the staff Thai, so where exactly are you going with this, are you saying that the only people who can be trained to be Italian Chef's are natural born Italians?

  3. im still having aircon blasting at me in kad suan kaew at 9pm. with a nice live band from philippines as well

not oysters but i had a plate of 50 baht cockles

Live band from the Philipines, where is this located??????

In the food court; basement floor. lounge band, been there for many years now.

Amazing, I've been here forever (feels like) and never knew that, but 1 night whilst on the way home I ran into a Philippine guy, long hair said he sang in a mall, maybe he's one of them.

  4. Too young for a retirement visa...Too poor for a O visa...and no work permit.

He is actually a criminal not yet deported.

You are correct, I say jail and deport him! Crime is crime, unless self sufficiency equals a get out of jail free card.

  5. Ask UG about the one near his bookstore.

Da Stephano. I love the chicken with wine sauce and mashed potatoes. Mapguy is right. There are lots of good Italian restaurants in Chiang Mai - all over the place..

So true, good restaurants everywhere, I had forgot about it, I have been often and will go again, I find it interesting the different reviews though.

  6. i then hit up thapae gate and observe. after 10-minutes i decide to practice thai with someone too nervous to simply run, cheesy.gif

You should write novels or go to work for one of the local publications!

If they ran, could you catch them? I tried to run yesterday, stopped after making it across the 4 lane road, I was exhausted, wanted a beer but declined.....

  7. Well nothing unusual about the hours. Airport Tops opens at 10:00 The Mall 11:00 they both close at 9:00 but they have movies that run past that time. Not sure about Promenada but the airport occasionally will have movies that start at 10:30 and some at 11:00. Not sure how you get in for those.

Can't say for sure as they are not completed yet. The ice rink and child care also the stage are different. Have to wait for them to be completed before making a judgement. The original plans showed the outside area to be some what park like. I know there is a Dukes going in there due to be open any day now. You will not find the service there you do eating oysters.

Another thing that I would find unique in a shopping mall here in Chiang Mai is a store selling a 188,000 baht piece of furniture some one mentioned here. Give it time a lot of the coffee stands will disappear and some of the shops will change. Just because a mall opens it's doors dosen't mean every thing is already perfect. That goes for any country. TIT is for people who know nothing of the out side world.

Also there will be a quality Italian restaurant opening there. That is still in the planning stages by an established respected business man here in Chiang Mai. Nothing has been committed yet.

That being said I agree it is not what it was promoted to be several years ago. Hopefully it will get there. If you are looking for perfection go to heaven. Short of that you are going to be disappointed

    .

Has Rimping put in a decent lighting system yet?

Ummmmm, I have also enjoyed the movie theater there, but they don't butter the popcorn, just as well as I'm over weight and then the seats would be covered in it, just an old memory from when I was a kid.

    1. Another thing that I would find unique in a shopping mall here in Chiang Mai is a store selling a 188,000 baht piece of furniture :
    • Ginger Shop/Nomad (House restaurant parking lot), ever seen the prices there 55555555 188,000 Baht for a painting I can buy or have commissioned in Kad Saen Keaw for 10,000 Baht, let alone the prices on the furniture, but I've been told they are antiques (not sure about the Vetting process), they had a small horse like rocker there for 45,000 Baht and I saw one not unlike it in Hang Dong.....
    1. Has Rimping put in a decent lighting system yet?:
    • Nope they still have the retail type lighting.

  9. White Elephant comes to my mind on Promenada Mall....wai2.gif

Let us speak more on this "White Elephant" or is it "White Cow"??? LOL 5555

    I have tried the following restaurants there;

Mix: Enjoyed the food and ambiance, yet the place was very hot, like the air conditioning was not working very well and it was kind of hot...

Rimping: Well I told you the story of the oyster bar, but I went for more and tried the Sushi bar, this time I went earlier, food was good, but what is up with the billing situation and them standing by your table until you pay it, I almost told them to keep the food, but as I said it was good!

Wine Connection: The place was empty, again, but it has some potential for sure, could use more Champagne, what they have for a selection is very limited, had the cheese plate and 2 bottles of sparkling Rose, not bad and Pat the waiter spoke great English. I was told a story by there staff that the Promenada Security locks the washrooms up at 21:00 and their customers have no place to relieve themselves, bizarre or that? Wow blink.png

Fuji: Chain Japanese food, same as everywhere, yet air conditioning barely works and it's way to HOT!

  10. most likely Dutch with Thai majority partners. entertainment venue? it's a shopping mall. park (or try to), shop - spend money, get out and go home. how is that entertaining?

When they were first promoting this Promenada they were relentless with how it was going to be, as below.........

Promenada Resort Mall Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai, Thailand. 16197 likes · 1439 talking about this. Meet..a bold new concept in retail An unique and visionary new

I don't get it, besides all the Cattle that you can't even sit on to get a photo opportunity what exactly did the mall contribute? What is the new concept? Close at 21:00 and don't sit on the Cows???

    1. Short hours of operation.
    2. A park lie stage, with nothing playing.
    3. Arrogant management?
  11. TIT. Plain and simple.

I don't understand, TIT? What does that mean and why is it plain and simple, please enlighten me?

This Is Thailand. Meaning - this is the way it is in Thailand. Just accept it.

Well for me I thought the Dutch operators were supposed to be bringing some new and or alternative entertainment venue to CM, apparently they are just going to follow the sheep too.... Darn unfortunate!

  12. I'm more interested in why a restaurant would let someone order a large expensive meal before informing them of the soon-to-be closed doors. Unless they would allow you to sit for two hours while they clean up. But it certainly isn't fun to do.

Well now that you mention it so did I, actually I commented on it and they just blew me off, as if it really didn't matter, however they did bring the bill at 20:35 and stood there beside our just started meal until I stopped eating and paid it. sad.png

  13. We (2 of us) were at the Rimping Oyster Bar in the Promenada Mall, having just ordered a nice bottle of wine and 3 types of oysters totaling 18 pieces, we were just beginning to pour the ripple when I heard the air conditioning go off:

I said to the oyster shucker guy, "why did they turn the air conditioning off",

    he said "we are closing",

I said "no way, really?" "but we have just ordered and the cost is about 7500THB"

    He said "Promenada Mall policy"

I'm a little confused, why would a mall that has very few retail shops, yet has a million coffee shops and restaurants of all kinds and a movie theatre have hours of operation from 11:00 to 21:00, is it just me or do other people find this strange as well?

  14. Surely folk with condos in high-rises can't expect their view to last forever. Whose view did their high-rise block?

another rather bizzare, and chang fuelled post, obviously not a clue what he is gibbering about, and not checked location,h/s4,and furama, are stand alone propertys,ie dont block any ones view.well maybe the ground floor fully encosed barbacue,at the back,d/h.

Oh come on, sure they do (block the view), I imagine when HS4 was built it was to the horror of the residents living peacefully in the houses around there.... then HS5 or Furama, or whatever it's called this week, was built, yup I can just imagine the delight of the home owners in the area.... 5555555 Not only did they have their views blocked, but then there was the logistical nightmare of negotiating the roads with the non-existent city planning!

suggest you go and see,no view to doi suthep blocked, back garden on one house overlooked, but mainly businesses anyway hotel, sauna ect,but never mind tit,ps,belive thaskins daughter involved in building project???

Aha, true story, the only view to Doi Suthep that got blocked was that farm kind of place as you're going towards KSK, I used to live in HS4 about 8 years ago, Doi Suthep side, used to go on my balcony and get the drink on with friends and watch that mountain...... From the roof pool it's okay too!
