You ask did they not have lights on, well many Thais have bikes with no lights.

A new light costs 60 baht, why waste money on that.

My wifes bike had no light for over 3 months, when i asked her why do you not get it fixed, her answer no time, and they cost money.

Sadly that is how Thais think.

I had the misfortune to drive through UDon THani , after darkness fell last night, there were huge numbers of motorcycles without lights, either front or rear, they obey no rules of the road , are driving at high speed. Just before darkness fell,  theschools were just coming out, a policeman stopped me to let 2 very young children cross over the road, as they got to the opposite side, they were almost hit by a motorcyclist who screamed past on the left hand side of the road. The policeman merely shouted at him.

I have no desire to learn to speak bloke english, I don't associate with them. i have never been to england, and have no desire to go anywhere in europe.

The United Kingdom, not England (sic), has used the term "Passing Out Parade" For many a long year. It is most certainly not "bloke' English. The term is used by all branches of Military Service.  Indeed our Police Service use the term, and probably the Fire Service also.

  3. Route 66 coffee is indeed a strange beast. When I opened my first packet I assumed I had bought the wrong product, maybe an ovaltine or cocoa drink. Once prepared, using an espresso machine,  it actually , to me, tastes quite pleasant, although the smell of chocolate is overbearing. Most Boncafe beans are excellent, as are the more limited production beans from Chiangmai etc. I notice that local outlets are reducing the stock of coffee beans, limiting ones choice. We are lucky to have a Boncafe shop in town.

In Siam TV Electronics yesterday in CM. My shaver has packed up so need a new one. As soon as you stop moving you get the treatment. said to the guy "I'm fine thank you" didn't move just stood there. Had enough "You know if I could look at stuff without being hassled, I might buy something". I walked away and left the store. The various posts about lack of product knowledge made me smile. All you UK expats, do you remember Dixons and Comet? No staff there had a scooby about anything they were selling:saai:

I miss the days of being in Comet etc and being approached by a salesperson who would simply read off the card beside the product , to try and impress me. However, I always found a few technical questions would throw them off the scent. Here it is a completely different matter, I really dislike the close attention, and stalking. 1% of the sales assistants I encounter can converse in English. I always do my research before going into a shop, but I like to see a product physically in front of me. I would speak to a Manager, but they appear to be very rare beasts. I speak no Thai unfortunately.

  5. Well done on your success to date. It is a hard road you have chosen to follow. There is no right or wrong way to achieve your goal, only you and your inner strength. I achieve 30 years next January, did it all alone, no AA or Military Doctor assistance, do not miss it and have no intention of starting again. If I had not stopped, I would be dead today, just like a large number of my peers, both civilian and military.

  6. I had planned staying in our gardens for the period, family has 3 houses with gardens all connected. Intended cutting the grass and doing an in-depth tidy up, and then on Monday I was using my weed whacker and got a nasty stone injury. No walking for a few days. So ended up just watching tv. I did see the town parade, its only a short walk down the soi, the locals were having a lovely time, no nonsense with reckless water throwing. I was approached but when they saw my bandaged leg, they simply walked away. I spent one Songkran in Pattaya, never again.

Got in argument today with a thai how she says we walk in the street-

I do but i think the chinese are a bit more to blame---however i pointed

out i wouldnt have to if the sidewalks were in good order and werent

LOADED UP with cars--mbikes and vendors sellins sh*t--no response...:saai:

You could have added the low hanging signage, electrical wires and razor sharp edges, which most Thais would be unaffected by, but are at a lethal height for most Farang.

In the U.K is that the 11 plus exam? If you get top marks you have a chance of getting a scholarship to a fancy grammer school.

Obviously I didn't and ended up in a comprehensive where I comprehended nothing. Still have some great memories of that school and if I'd gone to grammer school I could be gay now and be shacked up with a man. So there are some downsides of buying a passed with excellence 11 plus certificate.

I sense a tinge of regret here.

I stopped counting the times that clerks or staff made errors in my favor. I always point these out and put the change back on the counter. Weird things is that quite often the clerk in question seems to be annoyed rather than pleased when I point out their error.

Just before leaving the UK, during a very very cold winter spell, I bought my wife an expensive jacket. Got home and found that I had about 60GBP too much in my wallet. Did some calculations and realized the shop had given me too much change. I went straight down to the shop, just before they closed, and asked if they had cashed up for the day. They seemed very indignant that a mistake had been made, until I pointed out the 60GBP in my hand.

Monks in other countries are self sufficient, they grow veggies, have cattle, make beer grow fruit.they never come begging.

Spot on comment. They are too busy building temple extensions to raise any crops. Most temples are like a Tesco carpark, all concrete.

Aaah, Singapore with the nickname Fine City.

S$50- for not flushing the toilet.

Fines for this or that or caning.

    Lovely city for a holiday.

The only time I saw a policeman in Singapore was in Little India, there was a very heavy presence, some police were armed, although we observed no trouble.

  12. I am here on an extension of stay ( retirement) and recently had to purchase a re-entry permit for a short notice travel

to Singapore. My local IO is known as a rogue office, in terms of administration practice. I obtained the re-entry permit without problem,

although the Officer must have been tired from swinging numerous coloured stamps and old fashioned ledgers. But the thing that got me was the insistence on taking my photograph.

They have numerous photos already, both digital and hard copy. I am guessing it is a wee scam. Anyone else encountered this request.
