Since the emergency decree the obligation is on the employer to notify the Labour department of your termination within 15 days or risk a 20K fine.

There seems to be no obligation on the employee to cancel a work permit because I tried to cancel mine in April and I was turned away from the Labour office, they were not interested.. (Non-BOI)

Oh wow. And my lawyer is telling me 10,000 THB and need for proof of 8 Thai employees employed in last 3 months...

Do you have any template for the letter or a website you used? I tried calling Labor Dept but their official only number is busy. Search function on the website isn't working well either and can't find any info

  2. Hi guys,

I hope everyone is well and safe given the covid situation

I plan on leaving Thailand soon for good and I wanted to ask if I need to cancel my work permit which has been renewed this May. I heard some stories about complications when work permit isn't cancelled but I can't recall what those stories were. I just want to sleep well - let's put it this way. I have been employed in my own company which I have founded with a friend and business partner 2,5 years ago. I don't plan on returning to work in the same company but I plan on remaining a shareholder for now.

Is there anything else that I should be mindful?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  3. I think maybe I asked the question wrong. I understand I can receive SMS abroad and keep the simcard alive by topping up. That's not my problem.

My question is what to do if I lose my Thai simcard abroad (stops working/lose phone etc.,) and I cannot go to True let's say in Germany.

That number will be just gone right until I come back to Thailand right? Or is there any solution to this?

I don't have any problem yet. But I can see that there can be a problem. Thanks

  4. Hi guys,

I will be leaving Thailand in 3 weeks back to Europe. I would like to keep my Thai number though as I don't have any other one at the moment. I need the number for receiving for example confirmations codes from other banks/brokerages as a 2nd step security. My worst nightmare would be to lose the phone or if simcard stopped working.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Can I for example ask for a 2nd sim card from True and both would be active? Is it possible to somehow "host" simcard so that I don't need the physical version but I get SMS online? Or I could do something online? I'm really lost when it comes to telcos.

Also, I will be travelling for first few weeks in Europe so I might get a temporary sim card(s) depending where I am but it will not be a stable sim card, one that if I lose, I can easily get another one.

I'm thinking what's the best option here. Advice very welcome.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  5. Hi guys,

What would you recommend me? I just realized that there's the curfew...

So, my girlfriend is flying out back to Europe today at 23:15 from Suva airport and of course I wanted to drop her off and come back after. Public transport apparently doesn't run after 9pm so a) I'm not sure if I can easily come back b) any unpleasantries I can face coming back from airport if I face some checkpoint or something.

    Thanks in advance,

    Matt

  6. Thanks; will check

As I mentioned, I had no issue checking in 2-3 bags at a time in the past and not being sour about the price. Something did change (covid?)

One piece of positive news is KLM. They seem to allow checking in additional bags for ~3k THB of 23kg each or alternatively a sport equipment bag. Probably I'd take 3-4 bags with me this way but I'll reconfirm all with them.

  7. Checked with one shipping agent but the cost of shipping sport equipment seems to exceed its' cost... 29k for FedEx and 26k for UPS

International shipping by Thai Post quotes 8-8.5k for 20kg and dimension fit me, but local Thai Post office told me they don't do this now... unless they just didn't want to deal with me. They said "covid" was reason which sounds strange to me. Big bag there's covid risk but smaller bag no covid?

Typically, flying with Emirates I believe I was paying 100-150 USD per additional checked bag few years ago but now it costs 15k THB (or more than my 1-way flight) to check in another bag. Qatar also makes it very expensive to check in additional bag. I don't understand this at all. Flights won't even be half full.

It might be cheaper to leave the equipment behind and buy again lol

  8. Does anyone know what will happen if I don't meet any of the 3 conditions for quarantine-free stay in Samui? What kind of measures will be there imposed for the quarantine?

I'm coming from Bangkok this Saturday morning. I booked the flight first and then I was looking for PCR test... It's impossible to make a booking for PCR test and get results before flying to Samui (earliest test is tomorrow 6 pm and then have to wait for results ...)

    Thanks in advance

  9. Hi guys,

I'm thinking if I need to extend work permit. Here's the situation:

    • Work permit expires Jun 9th 2021
    • Non-B visa expires Sept 29th 2021
    • I plan to leave Thailand by end of August and leave management of company to my friend
    • I don't come to office anymore and work from home
    • I draw salary every month

Do I need to extend my work permit? Of course I'd prefer to avoid the fees if possible. If I do have to extend (given my timeframe in Thailand) what's the cleanest way to exit the company and not leave a mess?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  10. Hi guys,

Anyone knows where can I obtain medical certificate for cheap? Need to be able to swim in a pool in Ekkamai.

I saw some thaivisa threads from ~8-9 years ago quoting 50-100 THB range but I'm not sure if those places are still alive.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  11. Hi guys,

Is it possible to leave Bangkok right now? I'm getting confused with the restrictions now. I wanted to buy ticket to chiang mai just now, and they introduced 14 day quarantine; it's same for Phuket. I really just want to leave the city for a week or so. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

  12. Hi guys,

I have issued some invoices to clients that won't be paid.

Essentially, these invoices are revenue on which I will have to pay tax, but of course I don't want to pay tax on something that I won't earn. I want to recognize these account receivable as bad debt.

Accountant tells me that I need to send a letter from a lawyer via certified mail. I asked lawyer how much is that and I get a quote of 7,500 THB per letter.

It doesn't make sense for me to pay that much because invoices aren't that valuable.

Do you have any experience/advice on this?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  13. Hi guys,

I just experienced something rather out of the ordinary, at least for me. I'd appreciate comments if I'm paranoid or not because if I'm not, I'd need to block my card.

I was purchasing some medication from a well rated pharmacy in Nana earlier today (4.0 on google reviews plenty of comments). When it was time to pay I handed over my debit card. What was unusual was that the staff started typing my debit card details onto some website on the desktop computer. Website did not have a website address and instead some IP number starting 192.... Also, whole interface on the website was in Thai. Only after that action she proceeded to insert my card into one of those payment processing terminals where I had to enter my PIN.

Immediately I didn't feel comfortable after purchase and I asked her what was that action for. She only said "It's ok, no problem". I tried to press a little bit what was that action for but to no avail.

Have you experienced anything like this before? I can't think of any purpose of doing so. I've never experienced this. Maybe she was checking if the card isn't stolen? Really not sure. I don't know if I should block my card or relax. Only thing I did was to adjust my debit card spending limit.

    Thank in advance!

  14. Hi guys,

Long story short, I co-founded a Thai Limited company with a foreign business partner. Our 51% shareholder is Thai and she's a girlfriend of my business partner.

Sadly, the relationship did not last, ended quite sour, and she wants out asap.

    1) What is the worst she can do?

    2) How can we quickly find someone and how much should it cost? I sent out few emails to lawyers but no reply yet; want to understand price range as well

    Thanks,

    Matt

You will not have to pay any severance at all, as the employee would have been employed less than 120 days.

The employee would not be able to file a claim at the Labour Court because they would not have been employed for 120 days or more.

I see. That is great news indeed.

Absolute last question, I appreciate your time to do this, so there is no notice period during first 119 days correct? I can let someone go effective immediately, correct? Thank you in advance
