  1. What has happened to the Thai Post Office?

I used to regard Thai Post one of the successes here and very reliable.

Recently it has gone downhill and at a remarkable rate.

    1) Mail is always late and then comes in a big bundle. I constantly get bills delivered several days after the due date for payment.

    2) Registered Mail. Today I find a Registered Package in my letter box that should have had a signature but obviously did not.

    3) I also had a Recorded Delivery package which should have been signed for (which was posted on 25th May and just arrived) and left in the box.

    Anyone else also experiencing this?

  2. Any one else having a problem with Google Earth images of Samui? I have tried this on two separate Windows computers and different internet providers - using the time slider the latest images (12/2016) are out of focus,(5/2016) massive cloud cover, and all previous dates out of focus. Have upgraded to the latest version of Pro but still the same.

What if, just what if, this isn't just a pro-EU line from a bunch of pro-EU politicians, what if it's a true and accurate assessment of what will happen?

I mean, how can you objectively and honestly distinguish between pro-EU propaganda and fact based of accurate forecasting?

I would be interested in your definition of "Accurate forecasting" as all economists, experts and commentators have with very few exceptions got their forecasts wrong - not only for the General Election but for the EU Referendum and for its consequences.

  4. I support Brexit but I see a hard core of people who are doing their best to stop it.

I suppose they have a right to try even against the will of the people.

What I find of great concern though is that if they are successful then how will we then be seen as a continuing member of the EU? Look at all  the vitriol that has been poured on the Brexit sector by the EU Bureaucrats and many other EU supporters. Do we really want to be allied to these people? They are doing everything they can to make it hard for us to leave when what they should be doing is making us want to stay. Why does anyone think their views and attitudes to us will change if we end up remaining in the EU?

The only consolation I see is that the Euro is probably doomed within a couple of years, if not sooner, and with mounting skepticism about the EU in other countries the EU will probably not be far behind.

  5. I did this recently for a colleague who died intestate. His nearest living relative who inherits under Thai intestacy laws was his mother who lived outside of Thailand. While she was here for the funeral she appointed me as the Administrator on her behalf. This was done with a lawyer and had to be approved by the Court. That was what took time as getting an appointment with a judge here in Samui took a while. It then took another couple of weeks for the Court to issue the documentation. The whole situation was relatively easy as there were no assets other than three bank accounts - all Bangkok Bank. Two in Samui and one in Bangkok. Samui was easy they accepted the documentation and transferred the balance of funds to me which I transferred to his mother. The Bangkok branch was more tedious. First I had to go to Bangkok in person as they would not accept doing this through a local branch. Then, when I was there, they decided that they needed a further paper from the Samui Court that the Samui brach has not required which meant a wasted trip. Having got that I returned to Bangkok and they closed the account, transferred the funds to me which I thensent to his mother. I had to submit allthe documentation to the original judge to show that this had been done correctly.

  6. For those who are interested this is information I have been given.

Water from the PWA comes from five sources.
    1) Chaweng Lake providing 3,000 cbm per day
    2) Hua Thanon Lake providing 6,000 cbm per day
    3) Namuang Waterfall providing 10,800 cbm per day
    4) Lipa Noi RO Plant providing between 2,400 and 4,800 cbm per day
    5) Plai Laem Desalination plant providing up to 3,000 cbm per day.

A new undersea pipe line has been laid from the main land
and the PWA are in the process of extending their network around the island. Completion of this is planned for
2017 and it will then produce 1,000 cbm/hour.

Whilst many will say this is too late (for this year at least) it does show that there has been forward planning but big projects like this take time to fund and implement.

  8. Thanks, I hope this proves popular & leads to a wider selection of goods being available.

Pretty bad selection of stuff generally, some shelves pretty low or no stock today.... the import selection is really bad...

Big C has now become my first shop of choice, since their improvements and new owners.

Even Brit style Indian curries in the freezer section, which are not bad!

Have to agree. Both have a supply chain issue but Tesco's is definitely worse, especially on the fresh veg counters. Only go to Tesco once a month now when I have to pay a couple of bills.

  9. With the Army flexing their muscles in the area, if it is illegal maybe they will have to. However, as long as it is 50m from the beach front and no higher than 12m it is probably not illegal. Sorry for the restaurant but there is nowhere you can "buy a view" and even a two storey property would be in the way of the view from the other side of the road. The land plots in that stretch are about 60 m deep so it is possible.

  10. I have a number of Clients who use CAT and I therefore deal with them reasonably regularly and have always found their customer service to be excellent especially in the Nathon office. Enquiring about a connection to one house, the engineer came with me straight away to inspect the location and we had a quote within a couple of days.

  11. Anyone heard of Papaya Leaf Extract to cure Dengue ? Below are a couple of articles... I do not know if it works or not, but it can certainly not do you harm. You can find a lot of info. Google 'Papaya Leaf Juice (or extract) and also take a look at:

Melia dubia (Malai Vembu in Tamil) - medicinal plant used to cure dengue fever. Belongs to the Neem family.

Yes - my wife's mother (living in Issan) suggested it and my wife created the drink. Tastes absolutely foul - almost the cure being worse than the complaint. My Dengue was not that serious so I did not persevere but it is an "old folks" traditional remedy from the days before health care became more widespread in Thailand.

  12. Right of way depends on the angle the Raja ferry crossed/overtook the Seatran ferry. If within 22.5 degrees it is seen as overtaking and Raja should have steered clear. If the angle between them was more than 22.5 degrees it is considered crossing traffic, in which case Raja, being on the starboard side (I assume this from the location of the Raja and Seatran ports in Donsak) would have right of way.

That was my view also. If Raja was overtaking then she had a duty to keep clear. If Raja was on the Starboard bow of Seatran, she had right of way and Seatran should have altered course to pass astern of Raja.
