Thanks for the the replies everyone!

I intend to work on a workers visa though...do you think that it's possible for me to do so?

you need to contact a thai embassy in america and say you live in america to get out of the military service. if you say you dont speak thai then it helps. once you get the exemption you can come work in thailand on your thai passport. trust me you dont want to try to get a work permit on a foreign passport. i did it for 10 years.  i have researched this as my son is half thai.

The Non Imm O ME Visa is issued for the purpose of visiting Thai wife or children for up to 90 days at a time.

Granted people use them to stay in Thailand, but that was never the intention.

You can get an extension for the purpose of staying in Thailand and reporting at Immigration every 90 days.

That alleviates the need for border runs. That was your choice.

nope. i had a 1 year non im O visa that i got in new zealand that i used to stay in thailand for 1 year.  i tried doing 90 day reporting on that visa but was told i had to do boarder runs. was very easy to get in new zealand and if i move back to thailand i may stay on the same visa until i turn 50.

The 6 month Visa is a multi entry Visa. METV.

Pay a bit more what kind of Visa.

If you were living in Thailand and making continual border runs, you were on the wrong Visa.

i had a non im O visa based on my half thai kids last year thar required  90 day visa runs. was issued in new zealand. quite a good visa and cheap apart from the visa runs. was the right visa for me.

Not sure where the thread is but someone did a breakdown of the costs involved with the 6 month visa and with the required border hops and 1900baht 30 day extensions ( to get max time on it ) on the cheapest travel options it was over 10,000 baht on top of the original visa cost.

Plus having to carry and show 20,000 baht in case you are asked.

ya but that is playing roulette unless you have a multi entry tourist visa. better to pay a bit more and just do 90 day reporting. those visa runs are a pain in the ass. i did them for the first couple years i was in thailand. from koh samui they are a nightmare. not a nice life living visa run to visa run. 6 month re new able visas are the answer and people would pay for them. seems odd thailand would pass up a chance to rake in some more cash.

A six-month renewable, without financial proof, for 30,000 baht would be too attractive for the illegal workers, such as low paid dive instructors. It would also probably kill off the Thailand Elite system, if you were allowed six month stays. Given that the six-month multiple entry tourist visa (available from home country only under all kinds of conditions and only 60-day stays) for about 5,000 baht was fairly recently introduced, a more attractive, no questions asked, visa available in the region is never going to happen.

the multi entry visa is stupid with all its conditions. there needs to be a 6 month visa that you can get based on showing money in the bank or foreigh income. not sure how much thailand could charge for it but they would make good money off of it.  the elite is such a good visa for 5 or 10 years hassle free i doubt a 6 month visa would stop people from getting it. actually not many people have been getting the elite visa and i dont know why. for under 50 year olds it is the best option.

They are selling visas already, and they are also very keen. It's just they did not work out the correct pricing yet. Reality reflects it.

all the visas have a price however the best ones like the elite are the most expensive.  think a 6 month renewable visitor visa for 30 000thb would be well received. no idea why they dont do it.

Well thats not available at present. For those under 50 who want to spend money? Please explain who these people are please.

ones i have met are early retirees, which is the situation i am in. also there are the sporadic off shore workers and those with a trust funds. there are more but these are the main ones such as gap year students.

With all due respect I suggest all of this is a storm in a nut sack. This week I passed through Bangkok immigration on a 1 way ticket from Europe. I was not asked to provide any evidence other than my passport. No request for proof of 20K Baht. I was dressed casually was of a sober and respectful disposition and greeted with a smile. However if I was drunk, in flip flops, shorts, a wife beater tee shirt, my face and body adorned in tattoos with a passport awash with tourist visa stamps I would expect to be questioned.

it is not being done across the board. good idea to be prepared.

In Samui there are many bars closed for many months. I am told that foreigners own a lot of these bars with Thai Company structures in place. They presumably employ (on paper) the required number of Thai people and possibly pay them a small monthly salary throughout the year.

They open the business in the High Season for 2 or 3 months and either make a profit or loss that satisfy's the Tax man and the Immigration office.

Perhaps this is how a foreign Business owner can be permitted to stay a long time in Thailand ?

everyone should forget this opening a business to get a visa unless the business is very profitable. the hassle and expense makes the 5 year elite visa far far more attractive. i have had my business for 10 years and if it was just for the visa i would have been better of getting 2 of the 5 year elite visas. opening a bar for a few months would not even cover the expenses of the bar let alone the visa and work permit and accounting and taxes and social and.................

given the asian mindset, probably not….they will probably march you to an atm in the arrival area, make you withdraw 20K and wave it in their face.

you cant expect them to perform laterally…only literally

quite a few reports saying they wont even let you go show them at an ATM. if they single you out for too many entries and you dont have cash on you then it is just an excuse to stop entry.  i will bring a couple thousand US$ when i come over in sept. hope that will do it.

Seajae your pictures seem to show one half of the road in concrete with rebar. You say it has been drilled in but are you sure it does not run all the way across as that is how they normally lay it, all be it still laid on the red clay base? Not much point in drilling in rebar if joined to tarmac?

The bit worked on looks just like tarmac on top of the earth. This looks level with the concrete from your pics so presumably that's it. If I am seeing it correctly do you know why the 2 different construction types for the same bit of road?

the rebar is just pins between the 2 sections of road. the forming used has holes and they go along and poke short bits of rebar into them to stop the concrete leaking through.  hard to believe they are not putting some mesh rebar under this road.

Then your friend was ripped off by 20k, as a few years ago you could clear overstay of any length with no threat of blacklisting, (unless caught).

he had overstayed more than a year and did not want to risk it. long story but some visa agent was holding his passport promising to get him a visa. then she started borrowing money off him. i was shocked when i found out about it. his brother set the whole thing up and pocketed part of his inflated visa application fee. disgusting. anyway i think the 20k was fair enough peace of mind to have it all sorted out as his whole life is in thailand.

  13. how to look stupid in thailand. go around giving every thai you interact with a wai. they will love it, especially the younger ones who think having an older person wai them takes years off their life.

then again best just return a wai or avoid it all together. wai your wife parents if you have to but they are probably to busy thinking about how to borrow money off you to really care either way.

My strong suggestion would be to get one anyway in particular with all the hoo haa going on at present.

better not get involved with a business in thailand. although i left thailand last year i still have a 49% share in a business there. the guy managing  the business has the work permit i had because he actually runs the operation. most foreigners who have 49% shares in companies dont have work permits because they are very expensive or they are difficult or impossible to get. if you have 49% of the business just dont go there when it is open for business and you will be fine. make sure you have good accountants and a good lawyer. if you are in pattaya PM me and i will give you the details of mine.

Sadly there are far too  many people like you who are prepared to indulge in rumour, gossip and gross exaggeration.

Did I tell you that one of my neighbours (until recently) was a senior officer with the Dept.Of Work/Employment ?

I repeat I will  continue cutting my grass and doing all the other tasks associated with maintaining a property and I will not be "caught" or fined.

IF your doom laden prediction of my being "caught" ever happens(very unlikely) I will insist on being charged and taken to court.

i did not predict any doom and gloom. before you go off getting all offended read my post again. i said i doubt anyone cares about you mowing your lawn.

why would you tell me who you neighbor is and why would i care?
