the Thai revenue dept defines a TAX RESIDENT of Thailand if one is in country more than 180 days per CALENDAR YEAR (1Jan-31 DEC) so if one only stays 180 days he is tax free but if he then turns right around shortly after leaving the country, he could possibly be defined as a TAX RESIDENT. I do not know if this is the plan or if they will not tax remittances for those with the DTV but for the only other visa for which they exempt foreign earned income remitted into Thailand as specified in the TDR regulations, is the LTR. Just saying as like I said, I don't know how they are going to define one or if they will or will not tax you. Good luck and welcome to Paradise!

Thailand to tax residents’ foreign income irrespective of remittance
Presnock replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
What I wonder about is, if these potential "returnees" are so skilled, then theymust be getting a pretty good salary elsewhere - will there be any guarantees of higher salaries here? Just wondering and smiling at all the ways the Revenue Department of the govt seems to be searching for every baht possible. Wish they would let us know about the progress of the worldwide income taxation scheme. -
Father loses 8.7 million baht in fake modelling agency scam
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
Absolutely is very pretty, tall and slender - on the Chula dance team. Once she said that she was bored with modeling, even though the agents continued to call for shootings without even having to test shots as the originators of the ads wanted her based on her pictures. But, we do listen to her wants and desires too. She could be in the US at a college (already accepted with scholarships) but she opted to get her degree here at the #1 college in Thailand since she is doing an a foreign language (korean) and culture degree and self taught to date has tested in the Korean govt world wide test at the 4 level and is in Seoul now studying Korean language for which she plans on a masters degree at the number 1 college in Korea. She also taught Chinese at a different HS while she was an 11th grader, speaks Thai and English of course at the native level. Had AP computer course and high math tests too at a credited International School. Bright and beautiful and I am really proud of her and of course I am prejudist but totally support her in whatever she needs/wishes. -
Father loses 8.7 million baht in fake modelling agency scam

well suggest you re-read my comments in ENGLISH, as I said we never paid for any shootings and we got paid when she did the shootings and that included the first photo shoot too. I would never pay anyone for their adverstisement photos nor for my daughter to be included in a movie or tv series. I lived a long time before I decided to retire here and I have never fallen for an scheme, especially one in which they even wanted something paid in advance. -
Yeah but even for the smaller (Chinese controlled shops) they too would reap great rewards. that is those shops that the "zero-dollar" tours are taken to so they can use their coupons for purchases issued by the Chinese government. That is my opinion anyway as I have no proof that is what happens, only alluded to by the competitor shops and complaints of teh "zero-dollar" tours.

Father loses 8.7 million baht in fake modelling agency scam

My daughter worked as a model for the first 10 years of her life, doing shoots with stars, participating in shows at Muong Thong Thani, tv series, minor movie role (though credited at the end of the movie), newspapers, magazines, etc and we NEVER had to pay any deposit for any payment. Once daughter got bored with modeling we dropped it but occasionally still get calls for her to do something but not interested. -
Yes I do remit at least 3 million baht a year into Thailand and figure that they will contact me if that is over their bottom limit..however since I have an LTR and only US govt pension feel safe so far that I have nothing to worry about and can easily provide govt documentation of those. BTW, the American Citizens Abroad advised me that they have petitioned the US Congress and which the Congress will hold a hearing on possible changes to the taxation of US citizens working overseas so that double taxation or credits do not become necessary. Anything else I get on this I will pass along too. Have a good day

also be careful of that which you buy as some dark chocolate/cocao is laden with heavy metals. Just saying - I eat cark chocolate 99% each AM but very small amounts. Gotta keep those stem cells growing to replace all the sick cells

25 City Officials in Bangkok Involved in Corruption Scandal
Presnock replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Well, I am an American and I notice my elected officiasl and their minions are constantly violating their own ethics and anti corruption laws and regulations. I have lived and worked around the world and to me it seems politicians all come from the same mold. They are elected and then the first thing that they learn is how rich they can become just by bending the rules a tad and then the next thing that they notice is how much they will need to insure winning the NEXT election. The last thing that they seem to be concerned with is good governance for the citizens that elected them. They grab folks from among the citizenary that helped them get elected and they make them rich too. It is a repeating story every election it seems to me. I have witnessed this type of corruption and greed for over 70 years since I really had a brain that could think at all. Locally, I began living here for longer periods in the early 70's, lived and worked in many countries in Europe, Asia, Africa, and one in central America and didn't change my opinion of elected officials anywhere. I have noticed even congress or parliaments depending on what they are called in different countries being unable to even pass an anti-corruption law for politicians. Sorry class of people we have running our governments...who is to blame? John Q Public, the voters - swayed by a pretty face I guess. Have a good day. -
Well as a thinking adult, I sure wouldn't advise anyone to even think about doing that. I am 77, have not always avoided the fast food joints around the world, used to drink alcohol (30 years dry) but then only socially, smoked while a soldier in VN (4 years total smoker), but have always exercised (runner including marathons and lots of 10-20KM races around the world) lifted weights more years than not, though have switched to light weights lots of reps and since I stopped running at least 5 miles a day at age 65 and now do daily 6 km walks, have more definition from weights (after 72 years of age) than I ever had in my earlier years, read Dr. William Li's two best sellers about food research results and dieting - have switched to his recommendations. Feel great, lots of energy, and should be even healthier. Fortunately Thailand offers one a tremendous amount of fresh fruits, veggies, nuts, beans, fish, and meats. Hopefully they are safe depending on who/how they are processed and provided to the stores/markets. At least here too, prices are probably cheaper than the developed countries from which we have chosen to move to Thailand. Glad I did so many years ago, still love it here and have no plans to ever leave but....TIT so who knows what is in store for the expats in the future. Have a good one!

Majority of cybercrime victims in Thailand are working-age women
Presnock replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Averaging only 80 million baht a day for over a year! talk about getting rich, guess they found out how easy it was and then to see how long they could continue to do it for so long! Being old, not following much in the social media (other than this forum for grins), but watching local and international news programs, something of this magnitude seems to me should have been caught by the officials and passed on to the public a long time ago. At least I can pass it all along to my wife and daughter and hope that they are wiser now than these other women. -
Fake Prosecutor Arrested While Lecturing Students in Full Uniform
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
But, even after they caught him, it still took many months before he was arrested and even in the very act of faking it! How many times did he actually give these lectures and where, hard to believe even for Thailand. Just goes to show everyone how rank or even the appearance of rank makes people afraid to say anything because they might be charged with defamation or even worse just disappear. Scary for sure. -
funny thing is, let's look at their history so far - not going too deep of course but things that stand out recently: 1 2017 deal with China who had outlawed ewaste disposal in China - agreement with Thai Pm for Thailand to accept e-waste. Lots of news articles over the past year with not only China e-waste here but Thai e-wast being stored in local warehouses - Rayong, BKK Ayutthaya, et al. 2. Free trade with Chinese agreement, immediately fake "elephant pants" made in China pour into Thailand. complaints forcing govt to stop this particular item. 3. Local merchants saying that Chinese mercandise showing up everywhere, poor quality and cheaper threatening the Thai businesses. 4. free visa - yet stories of "dollar-free" tour groups from China, only being taken to Chinese owned shops for shopping here in Thailand. 5. Chinese only signs appearing - get new passports, or trying to get workers to go to China. Now govt has put a clamp on this one for a while. Now, look around SEA Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos - all controlled by China through their different diplomatic maneuvers. VN which has fought against the Chinese forever, continues to connect with the west to avoid having the Chinese take over their country too. Just saying, based on what I see/hear here in the local news media so it seems clear to me but for some reason the govt continues working towards the Chinese (i.e. free trade talks now, moving towards BRICS entrance, etc). I am not saying that the western counries haven't or won't take advantage of Thailand's financial position to work out advantageous deals with the local govt but that works both ways too. My opinions only of course but... anyway to all have a great day!

and, how is that different from most of the comments on this forum? Some things are basically true while others seem to be true while many just seem to be trolll searching. Diets are so personally consumed that it fits the troll category. At 77, I know what is a good diet and what is garbage. If people ate well/healthy then the developed world would not be filled with fat or obese people. Besides eating to much beef would mean too many cows and that increases air pollution and tons of water use. Choosing what to eat is one of the last total freedoms we can experience these days. Hopefully it is a healthy diet but look at Trump - an avid Mickey D's fast foods, he and his doctor say he is healthy and only weight 215 pounds! Just look at him and decide if that is true. ANYWAY, HAVE A GOOD ONE, ENJOY YOUR MEALS
-
Now we get the "REST of the STORY"! Yeah eating the right amount and not excess, can probably do wonders for some people including beef and based on stories in the news constantly, bad foods are being sold regularly that negatively affect anyone's health. Everyone must decide what they want to eat, when, how much, etc and others should accept that! IF one wants to be restricted in every way, go to N. Korea and they will take care of you.

Understand where you are coming from though I have no tax problems at all right now and don't anticipate any for the future. But FYI the American Citizens Abroad has been lobbying the US congress to change tax requirements for US citizens working overseas so that they would only be taxed on US pensions or funds earned in the US, and not overseas earned income. I do not know if that will help or have no effect on the expats here but at least some other folks are aware that being taxed by two countries can be troublesome in some ways. Good luck.

Inteview with MFA deputy covered on this formu said it can be used over and over every year during the 5 year period. He even said that they can walk out of Thailand and walk back in without paying any extension. It is a really great visa for those qualified for whatever reason. But, I think the Director of the Revenue Department is going to classify the holder of such a visa as a tax resident if they stay in country for more than 180 days in a calendar year but then again TIT and have not heard anyone in the govt mentioning the holdelr to be tax exempt on remitted money into Thailand as is the LTR.

Thai wildlife rescuer remains comatose months after cobra bite
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yes previously in the med unit of the US Embassy, they had wall boards covering one whole wall, amybe 15 feet, 6 feet high, and on that board, wre pictures of snakes. Many just said poisonous, unknown species! At least 40-50 different photos. Certainly made me a believer and when I played night golf, if the ball was in the rough I certainly did not go look for it as during the daytime playing and seeing snakes which the caddies would avoid and call the office to alert them where the snake was so they could come try to capture it. -
Thai wildlife rescuer remains comatose months after cobra bite
Presnock replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Yessir, snake and Thailand synonymous! I used to walk early AM (3-4) in our mooban in CM - until I literally ran into a 3-4 meter Burmese Python. Around, he was as big as my upper thigh. I had run into smaller snakes, cobra or some others that the guards said were dangerous too, but the size of this one shocked my. I ran to the guard house - 100 yd or so away and ran back so I could see where this big fella went and fortunately saw him go into the yard of a vacant home. A guard (older man) from Phase II was called to help out this guard young (man) and he checked the vacant yard and saw the snake and chased it back out into the street. When the old guy saw the size of the snake, he backed away so I had to help the young guy catch the snake. WHen it would open its mouth to try and strike, I realized he could swallow my head easily. But the young guy knew what he was doing and grabbed the snake and we put it into an empty rice bag. He could hardly lift the snake to carry it off and said later that he took it to the mountains and released it. Here in Bangkok on some runs I have run across a cobra, when the guard asked me the color, I said bronze - and he indicated that it was a boa or python so not to worry. Whene he tried to catch it, I lifted off the ground about 5 feet and spread its HOOD! Scared the guard a tad but after an hour he did manage to kill it and said he sold it at the market! At the US embassy they keep geese on the grounds which regularly scare up snakes. The saying goes "in Thailand there are 50 different kinds of snakes, 47 are poisonous and the other 3 will squeeze you to death!". I believe that except I think that there a lot more than 50 different kinds. Always be aware no matter where no matter where you are and don't trust snakes even if you think you know them. -
Yes, I just re-read the TRD english version and it specifically says ss and pensions can only be taxed by the US and that too will be my response if I am contacted by the TRD to explain why I didn't get a Tax ID nor file taxes on the money I remitted this year to THailand. I also have an LTR so shuldn't have to pay anything to them.
-
I too have read the DTA between the US and Thailand - I only have seen US government pensions are taxed only by the US government but that other state pensions may not be taxed only by the US government. To me the DTA allows the Thai Revenue Department to also tax non US government pensions. Yes Social security also is totally taxed only by the US government IAW the DTA. That is why many people will probably need a local tax agent who hopefully understands what the TRD will determine what is assessable or not or as others have suggested, go the the local DTR office (with a Thai speaker if you aren't fluent in Thai) and query their interpretation. But from what I have read on this forum from those who have gone to the local TRD and asked any questions about interpretations based on the new interpretations, the local office reps have not been given any directions YET so maybe you can get an idea of what they will say or maybe not. Some of the local tax agencies are responding to questions about the TRD and what might transpire based on their interactions wtih them previously. Some of these agencies are responding to questions without needing to be paid, hoping to have a new client when 2025 rolls around. Good luck.

I agree with your statement but you also must understand that a lot of the users of this forum unless given a specific answer that they want then they will guess that the answer is what they want to hear and may be incorrect most of the time. I blv that the TRD should report on the DTV tax requirements for those staying in country over 180 days a calendar year as it seem so many people that I have heard talking/writing about this particular visa believe that one can stay within Thailand for almost the entire 5 years without having to do extensions but just go across the border and return for a new entry stamp and I am sure the TRD will have something to say about that since the holders of this visa cannot work for a Thai company so must remit funds to live or carry a lot of cash each exit/entrance. I really don't care except I just think if the Dir of the TRD makes that clear, then this subject will only get a few pages instead of a hundred pages of repeated questions and guesses.
