Calm down, Everyone. Not going to happen, at least in our lifetime. -

In a rational world there would be 2 debates: One at a time and place proposed by Trump, and one at a time and place proposed by Harris. But I was often accused of being too rational during my career as a Federal public servant in Oz.

No house insurance in Thailand - how normal?
mfd101 replied to GypsyT's topic in Insurance in Thailand
We've had full house insurance since we built in 2016/17. Arranged thru BKK Bank. Never a problem for the 2 or 3 small claims we've made. No suggestion of scepticism or being difficult on their part. Helped no doubt by being good bank customers known to be 'rich'. Much the same as the car insurance where we've made 2 or 3 rather larger claims. Having said that, Thais clearly have a problem with the concept of risk. You see that every day of the year on the roads, including eg crossroads or intersections with blind spots. Only AFTER a death do they rush to fix the problem (See! No ploblem. Noone die). Every year when it comes time to pay the house insurance premium I have the same argument with b/f: "House not burn down". -
Just like the politicians that WE elect to run the country, so in Western democracies we employ the police to do the jobs that need doing but that we don't want to do and are incapable of doing. In both cases - politicians & police - we then spend a great deal of time whining and grizzling about them, accusing them of being corrupt and incompetent. In which case why did we elect THOSE particular people? and why don't WE try doing the cops' jobs instead?

Thai Army Offers Conscripts 10 Baht Meals Following Criticism
mfd101 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Everyone knew. Not a secret. These are Thai peasant boys. Half of them were gay-for-pay. That's how they made ends meet (so to speak). -
My mumbled one- and two-word attempts are greeted by my family with cheerful understanding (giggle giggle). Anything beyond that would be beyond either them or me. But I am resolved - once I've finished improving my Cherman and teaching myself to read Spanish literature fluently - to take up Thai seriously before I reach 80. 5 years to go.

Thai Army Offers Conscripts 10 Baht Meals Following Criticism
mfd101 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Yes, my b/f served finger food to the highest in the land (well, actually the second highest). And minded the colonel's dog and cut the hair of his platoon. He also tells me the conscripts have to pay for their own uniforms. All of which is somewhere between amusing and appalling but I must say - for an uneducated illiterate peasant boy who spoke Khmer as his first language, peasant Thai as his second - this was all for him a great eye-opener & an education in itself. He still knows all the shortcuts thru hotel lobbies and other people's backyards whenever we're in Bangers. And he met the love of his life and now speaks OK English ... -
Thai Army Offers Conscripts 10 Baht Meals Following Criticism
mfd101 replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
Utterly disgusting. A pity the conscripts don't go on strike. That would certainly give the Powers a shock ... Back in the day (12 years ago) my b/f used to climb out over the barracks walls at midnight in BKK in search of food (and other moneymaking adventures) ... -
Fingers crossed.
