  1. Simple solution: Mum, Dad & boy take out Thai citizenship (on the basis of long-term residency & - in the boy's case - Thai-only language). There we are: Fixed. (My favourite Cambodian Thai resident - a highly skilled builder & fluent Thai speaker - has just received his Thai ID card, so all well with his Thai wife & children. No probs.)
  2. Not sure what the problem is. I'm guessing that members of H. sapiens having been ducking down the little side streets for a leak for the last several hundred thousand years. Doesn't seem to have had any genetic effects.
  3. Run out of brown envelopes. Needing a topup. So, watch this space for nothing to happen (yawn).
  4. So, at the end of the long & turgid OP, the Court won't actually order action against the perpetrator(s) of this heinous crime? As usual in Thailand, more hot air than useful action.
  5. I think I meant 'cyclones', the current example being a fairly typical northern hemisphere (counterclockwise) example.
  6. My observation from Accuweather's maps and (mostly inaccurate) forecasts - at least they're mostly inaccurate here in south Surin, the driest part of Thailand - is that characteristically these major monsoons spend most of their force when they hit the Vietnamese coast, and then V'nam & Laos and later Cambodia receive most of what remains of their strength.
  7. In other words, what was the point of the whole exercise? Just to keep us all entertained for a few weeks or months? To what end?
  8. Interesting contrast between Vietnam's determined growth & modernisation vs Thailand's dithering incompetence.
  9. So, can we watch it please (with translation)? Then we can all make our own - preferably sane & sensible - judgment.
  10. And Italy & Spain & France already having anti-tourist riots ... Never mind, send them to Thailand.
  11. I assume that cuddling up to the Swedes would have implications for any (proposed) cuddling with the Russkis ...
  12. So, Paetongtarn can expect her verdict around 2041? No hurry, This is the Tropics.
  13. A successful Communist insurgency is arguably about the only thing that will ever move Thai social and political arrangements in to the 21st century. Which, coming from a right-of-centre sort of person like me, about sums up the Thailand we live in.
  14. When you live right next door to both China and Cambodia, being prepared is advisable.
  15. This is going to be fun to watch, assuming it ever gets off the ground (it will but may be more like 10 or 20 years down the track) ... Examples in my Khmer family: - MIL age approx 81 or 82 (noone knows, least of all her - serfs weren't registered in the day). No education, signs with a thumb print. Income: c52000฿, source: rich Falang SIL - FIL, age 78, ditto ditto but can sign his name ("Taught by the monks") - BIL, age 45, totally illiterate but has literate wife who will do the work as necessary - My b/f age 36, functionally illiterate in Thai. Income: 1-2 million ฿ annually, source: imported by rich Falang b/f.
  16. As usual, the readers of AN imagine that everything that happens in Thailand including every government decision is about the readers of AN ... Actually this is about millions of poor and uneducated or undereducated Thai people who don't know how to look after themselves in the modern high-tech universe.
  17. The thing with public hospitals is to have a private doctor who also works at the public hospital (which is the norm). My experience here in Prasat Surin, with a large & VERY popular public hospital just 2 kms from home: You see your doctor at his clinic in town (10-minute wait) and make a time & date for an op next day requiring hospital facilities (in & out on the dot). 4000฿.
  18. The only security guarantee that would be effective for Ukraine at this point would be the presence on its territory - just a bit behind the lines - of 50,000 well-armed & trained NATO troops ready to fight (preferably British, French & Polish, with the Germans back further in logistical support).
  19. Well, I don't suppose the poor people whose houses were destroyed by Cambodian shells are objecting, or wondering where the shekels came from. What about all the other baht trillionaires? What are they donating for the peasants along the border and for the soldiers including the families of dead soldiers?
  20. Well, 12 months in advance for the new p/p does seem a bit of an overkill. Given the cost of an Oz p/p, you don't want to lose too much of it voluntarily ... 6 months in advance is already stretching it. Given that the process takes up to 4 weeks, I should think initiating it 2 months in advance should suffice. Motto: Be prepared but don't die in a ditch.
  21. Thanks. Noted in detail & understood.
  22. Wow, that is good news. I couldn't remember exactly how it went last time except that I did it all at the embassy in BKK and paid extra (on top of the already astonishing fee) to get it done within (from memory) 1 week, and I picked it up at the Embassy. I'll certainly do it online & by post etc next time (Dec26). Cheers
  23. OK, thanks for that. I think that on that basis I'm in the clear for this round and won't need to worry about getting a new p/p till Aug/Sep next year.
