Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal A single father from Ratchaburi is embroiled in a legal battle following the tragic death of his 19 year old son. The son, who was raised solely by his father since the age of three months, died after sustaining injuries in an accident. The father is now facing a claim from the boy’s mother, who left the family shortly after his birth, for a 2 million baht insurance payout. The father shared his story on the Facebook page Je Moi V+ to highlight the emotional and legal challenges he is facing. He described how he raised his son alone after separating from the child’s mother when the boy was only three months old. Despite the lack of support from the mother, he dedicated himself to his son’s upbringing, only to face this unexpected legal challenge after his son’s tragic demise. “My heart is heavy as I share this with the whole country. I have a son, whom I have raised alone since he was three months old. His mother and I separated at that time, and our son stayed with me.” The teenager was involved in an accident that resulted in a hospital stay for 10 days before he succumbed to his injuries. During this difficult time, the father was by his side, while the mother, who had not been present in her son’s life for 19 years, was notably absent. She neither visited him in the hospital nor participated in his funeral arrangements. However, upon learning about the 2 million baht insurance policy, the mother, currently residing abroad, has sent a lawyer to claim the money. As the parents were never legally married, the law automatically grants the mother the rights to the insurance payout, reported KhaoSod. The Facebook page also noted that the mother is currently living overseas, which is why a lawyer is representing her in this matter. This revelation has sparked a wave of sympathy for the father, with many commenters expressing their support and outrage at the mother’s actions. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-17

Former PM Srettha cleared in police chief appointment scandal By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Pattaya News The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) cleared former Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the Police Commission of any wrongdoing in the controversial appointment of Police General Torsak Sukvimol as National Police Chief. Photo courtesy of The Pattaya News By Puntid Tantivangphaisal The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) cleared former Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and the Police Commission of any wrongdoing in the controversial appointment of Police General Torsak Sukvimol as National Police Chief. NACC spokesperson Saroj Phuengramphan announced the findings yesterday, December 16. “The commission found no evidence of misconduct or undue influence in the selection process.” The ruling puts to rest allegations that the appointment flouted seniority and fairness. Critics argued that Pol. Gen. Torsak’s selection disregarded the merits of more senior candidates. However, the NACC clarified that Thailand’s law mandates a balanced evaluation of seniority and qualifications, rather than prioritising seniority alone. The commission determined that Pol. Gen. Torsak met all legal requirements, and his appointment followed due process. The investigation revealed that the selection process involved rigorous discussions among commission members. With no proof of corruption or improper influence, the complaint was dismissed under Section 49 of the Anti-Corruption Act 2018. This decision is likely to be a relief for Srettha, who has faced mounting scrutiny during his tenure. Still, the controversy highlights lingering tensions around government transparency in Thailand, with critics questioning whether established rules are too flexible, reported The Pattaya News. Photo via MGR Online By Petch Petpailin A Thai couple in the southern province of Phatthalung claim that mysterious objects falling from the sky made them feel refreshed and healthier, both physically and mentally. The couple, Wichate Siriphuwadon and Maneerat Siriphuwadon, displayed several shiny black objects of varying sizes, with a total weight of around 20 kilogrammes, to various news agencies. They revealed that they discovered the objects in their palm plantation on November 11. The couple explained that there was heavy rain at about 2am, followed by a lightning strike on their plantation. The next morning, they went to inspect the area and found fallen trees with burn marks, as well as a pit emitting heat and smoke. They decided to cover the pit with soil and revisited it two weeks later, November 11. Upon digging into the pit, they discovered the mysterious items, which resembled rocks. They brought the objects back to their home while awaiting an investigation by officials or experts. Maneerat told ThaiRath that the objects cut her hands when she picked them up. She initially felt pain and heat at the wound, but the symptoms disappeared very quickly. Maneerat stated that after storing the objects at home for a month, she felt noticeably refreshed and healthier. She reported having more energy and improved mental health. Locals living nearby also visited the couple’s home to examine the items. Many focused on identifying numbers for the upcoming lottery draw, with several claiming to see the numbers five and three on the objects. As of now, no government officials or experts investigated the shiny black objects. Some locals expressed concerns that the items could pose a danger to the couple and others in the area. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Two men driving a minibus at an unusually low speed were arrested by highway police in Pathum Thani after it was discovered they were using drugs on a motorway. Police officers, led by Wanchana Tipasan and Narong Pitakchanun, apprehended 31 year old Pithaya and 28 year old Ramil on charges of driving under the influence of drugs, distributing a category one narcotic, and using a category one narcotic. The arrest took place on Kanchanaphisek Road in Khlong Si, Khlong Luang district, Pathum Thani province, with 440 methamphetamine (meth) pills and drug paraphernalia found in their possession. While on patrol, officers noticed the suspects driving the minibus at a suspiciously low speed, initially assuming they might be lost. However, when signaled to stop for assistance, the two men displayed nervous behaviour, prompting the officers to conduct a search of the vehicle. The search revealed the meth pills and drug paraphernalia, leading to their arrest. “We thought they were lost because of their slow driving, but their suspicious behaviour made us investigate further.” Upon questioning, the suspects confessed to using drugs in the vehicle, admitting that each had consumed between three to five pills. They revealed that the meth had been recently purchased from a dealer at 15 baht per pill, never expecting to be caught in such a manner. Consequently, the two men were taken to Khlong Luang Police Station for further legal proceedings. The incident underscores the ongoing issue of drug use and distribution in the region. Police remain vigilant in their efforts to curb such activities, regularly patrolling key areas and responding swiftly to suspicious behaviour. The highway patrol’s actions in this case highlight the importance of proactive law enforcement in maintaining public safety and order. Pathum Thani has seen a rise in drug-related offences, prompting increased cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and community groups. This cooperation aims to address the root causes of drug abuse and provide support for rehabilitation, reflecting a broader commitment to tackling the problem, reported KhaoSod. Photo courtesy of The Nation By Puntid Tantivangphaisal Bangkok’s iconic Asiatique night market is undergoing a jaw-dropping transformation. A massive 6,000-square-metre section of the bustling riverside hotspot will soon transport visitors back 145 million years to the Jurassic era, complete with roaring dinosaurs and thrilling attractions. Wallapa Traisorat, CEO of Asset World Corporation (AWC), revealed that The Jurassic World: The Experience will open by the second quarter of next year. “This will be the world’s largest Jurassic theme park.” Wallapa noted that AWC is collaborating with Neon and Universal Live Events & Location-Based Entertainment on the project. With an eye-popping budget of 1.4 billion baht for the first phase, the park will feature a giant dinosaur egg as its landmark, alongside themed zones packed with restaurants, shops, and exciting rides, said Wallapa. “Our goal is to recreate how dinosaurs lived.” The development doesn’t stop there: AWC plans to launch three additional phases, further cementing Thailand as a sustainable tourist destination. The entrance fee is expected to remain affordable, with Wallapa estimating it “should not exceed a few hundred baht.” Tourists have already begun flocking back to Asiatique, with weekday visitor numbers hitting 30,000 and soaring to 50,000 on weekends—about 80 to 85% of pre-Covid levels, reported The Nation. Gerald Rens, Universal Live Events Deputy Director, said the project brings together a global team of architects and engineers. “We’re working hard to deliver a truly immersive experience to both Thais and foreign visitors.” Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-17

File photo for reference only In a historic move for children's rights, Thailand's Senate unanimously approved an amendment to Section 1567 of the Civil and Commercial Code, transforming the regulations surrounding parental discipline. This newly passed amendment, swiftly moving through all three readings in a single day, updates the existing clause that allowed parents to "punish the child in a reasonable manner for disciplinary purposes." Key to the amendment is the prohibition of punishment involving abuse, violence, or any form of harm to a child's body or mind. It also mandates that disciplinary actions respect a child's human dignity, safeguarding their physical and mental well-being. A Senate spokesperson highlighted that parents maintain their rights to guide their children, but they must do so without resorting to harmful methods. This legal update is intended to bring Thailand in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, of which it is a signatory. The new provisions stress that corrective strategies should not hinder a child's development or diminish their self-worth, representing a vital step towards addressing domestic violence and reinforcing child protection principles. The next step for the amendment is submission to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who will present it to His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua for royal assent before its official enactment. -- 2024-12-17

This expansion comes as the airline taps into the burgeoning demand from Indian travellers, buoyed by visa-free travel and improved connectivity. The carrier, known for operating A330 aircraft, celebrated its return to Delhi on December 15, marking a significant step in its Southeast Asia strategy. Thai AirAsia X’s CEO, Tassapon Bijleveld, highlighted the recent enhancement of the bilateral Air Service Agreement between India and Thailand. File photo for reference only Late last night, a fire erupted in a four-storey apartment building in Pattaya, sending plumes of smoke visible from afar. Despite the chaotic scene, no injuries occurred, thanks to timely action from local authorities and a resident's swift response. The Pattaya City Land Disaster Relief Department received an emergency call at 11:46 PM, leading to rapid deployment of rescue volunteers and firefighters. The fire originated from the building’s top floor, specifically from a storage cabinet containing books. As residents were evacuated, firefighters efficiently tackled the situation, using ventilators to clear the smoke. Remarkably, the flames were extinguished before spreading, averting a potential catastrophe. The drama unfolded while Kamonporn, a 20-year-old resident and the room's owner's sister, was home. She initially dismissed a burning smell while showering but later realised the severity when an explosion occurred. Her quick action with a fire extinguisher and prompt alert to firefighters played a crucial role in containing the blaze. Authorities suspect an electrical short circuit as the ignition source. While grateful no injuries were reported, officials emphasized fire safety's critical nature and the need for regular electrical system checks. Kamonporn's decisive actions were lauded by firefighters, highlighting her role in preventing a larger disaster. -- 2024-12-17

File photo for reference only In a major drug bust in Khon Kaen, a 31-year-old recently freed convict, Jay Ban Phai, was apprehended by local police for resuming drug dealing activities to support his family. This arrest occurred during an extensive operation, "Yuttakarn Pitak Khon Kaen 2023," aimed at curbing drug-related crimes in the province. On December 16th, at approximately 5:30 am, over 100 officers, led by Khon Kaen's governor, Kraisorn Kongchalard, carried out the operation in Ban Phai district. This included a raid on a community where Jay, along with his partner Tharaluck, was found with nearly 12,000 methamphetamine tablets stashed in a paint bucket, awaiting sale. Jay, a stepfather to three children and expecting a new addition to his family, confessed to relapsing into illegal activities due to financial hardships and unsuccessful business attempts. He buried the drugs in his mother-in-law’s backyard, planning to sell them once clientele was secured, as financial pressures mounted with a pregnant spouse and school-going children to support. Kraisorn lamented the prevalent drug issue, stating that despite multiple arrests, the persistent production and distribution networks continue to fuel the problem. The endeavour underscores the necessity for ongoing collaboration among law enforcement to address this pervasive challenge within Khon Kaen. In a linked operation, authorities also detained 22 drug users in another part of Ban Phai. They face legal proceedings and are set to join rehabilitation programmes, reflecting a comprehensive approach to tackle drug misuse and related offences in the area. -- 2024-12-17

Photo: The Thaiger A heated confrontation involving two neighbours in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok has ignited a social media frenzy and a community debate. Kannika, a 32-year-old woman, posted a video on Facebook showing herself assaulting her 64-year-old neighbour, Tuk, accusing her of deliberately blowing cigarette smoke into her home. In her post, Kannika explained her actions, expressing frustration over what she described as four years of enduring smoke-filled air. "I have security cameras that record Tuk smoking and blowing the smoke into my home," Kannika asserted, arguing that her patience had worn thin despite efforts to seal her home off from the nuisance. The altercation, caught on camera, escalated from verbal complaints to physical violence, with Kannika pushing Tuk to the ground. The incident, reported by ThaiRath, occurred early yesterday morning in the Pak Kret district. Kannika, speaking to Channel 8, mentioned her severe allergies and criticised Tuk and others in the community for not heeding her pleas to smoke far from her house. On the other hand, Tuk's landlord, Wanee, painted a different picture, describing Tuk as a considerate person who tried to minimise smoke exposure and even moved further away while smoking. A local Facebook page known for airing community grievances sided with Tuk, suggesting that Kannika's complaints were selective. They noted that Kannika's husband, a smoker too, is not subjected to the same scrutiny by Kannika. Kannika defended her husband, stating he smokes at a safe distance, ensuring minimal impact on her allergies or the neighbours. The dispute has now taken a legal turn, with Tuk intending to pursue legal action against Kannika for the assault. Meanwhile, the incident continues to spark varied views on social media about neighbourly conduct and tolerance. -- 2024-12-17

Thai Pig Farms Face Crisis Amid Oversupply; Call for Balance Grows File photo for reference only Small pig farms in Thailand risk closure due to a surplus of pigs. File photo for reference only Small pig farms in Thailand risk closure due to a surplus of pigs. The Swine Raisers Association of Thailand (SRAT) blames larger farms for increasing production beyond demand, according to SRAT President Sitthiphan Thankiatphinyo. Sitthiphan stressed the importance of balancing pork supply with demand to avoid price swings, recalling past cases where disease outbreaks led to high pork prices, harming consumers. On the other hand, smuggled pork from abroad lowered prices, causing many farmers to shut down. Sitthiphan urged large farms to work with small ones for sustainability instead of just boosting output. Thailand raises about 20 million pigs annually, mainly at 10 major farms, which continue ramping up production despite stable demand. He warned that without addressing this imbalance, small farms could face financial ruin. Meanwhile, Suntharaphon Singriwong, head of the Northern Swine Raisers Association, praised the government's effort to stop illegal use of growth substances in pig feed. Suntharaphon noted the Department of Livestock Development (DLD) is leading food safety initiatives, advising consumers to buy pork with the DLD OK logo for assurance. This government action is seen as a positive move to ensure pork safety and stabilize the industry. -- 2024-12-17

Photo courtesy of KhaoSod By Puntid Tantivangphaisal An alarming incident unfolded yesterday when a 58 year old man drove a green-black Toyota saloon car into a crowd, injuring several people and damaging numerous vehicles before fleeing the scene. Police are actively pursuing him to bring him to justice. The chaos erupted yesterday, December 16 at around 6.30pm when emergency services in Phetchaburi received reports of a car colliding with motorcycles at Arun Pradit intersection, Mueang district, Phetchaburi province. The reckless act resulted in at least three people suffering severe injuries. Emergency medical teams, alongside rescue units, were dispatched promptly to the scene where they discovered injured individuals sprawled across the road. Some injuries were critical, necessitating immediate medical evacuation to King Mongkut Hospital for urgent treatment. The offending vehicle fled towards Petchkasem Road, heading in the direction of Bangkok. In response, law enforcement swiftly communicated via radio to set up roadblocks along the suspected escape route. Prior reports indicated that the same vehicle had been involved in collisions with multiple motorcycles along an 18-metre road stretch from Arun School Intersection to Khao Wang Intersection, leaving further damage in its wake. Subsequent investigations led by Wanchai Khawram, the superintendent of Mueang Phetchaburi Police Station, focused on gathering intelligence about the perpetrator’s escape route. Officers soon identified the driver as Chainurak, who was operating a green-black Toyota with licence plate 9 กด 9765 Bangkok. Evidence, including vehicle parts, was collected at the scene to aid the investigation. Efforts to reach Chainurak proved challenging, as Wanchai attempted to contact his relatives without success. It is believed that Chainurak might have been heading to work at a company located in Sam Phran district, Nakhon Pathom province. Moving forward, the police plan to summon all affected parties for additional questioning. A summons for Chainurak will also be issued to facilitate his questioning and gather essential evidence to proceed with legal actions against him. “We are determined to resolve this case swiftly and ensure that justice is served.” The community remains on edge as the search intensifies for Chainurak, whose actions have left a trail of destruction and concern across the region. Police are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward, ensuring that he is held accountable for his actions, reported KhaoSod. Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-12-17
