  1. A Burmese man stabbed his Thai girlfriend and committed suicide following her discovery that he had a legal wife in Myanmar and her request to end the relationship. The Thai woman survived the attack and remains in hospital. The Burmese man, 29 year old Htet, attempted to murder his Thai girlfriend, 24 year old Jiraporn, yesterday, October 31. However, only he lost his life in the incident. Jiraporn remains in hospital with stab wounds to her chest and right wrist, while Htet sustained four fatal wounds. The attack occurred outside an apartment on Soi Bang Lamung in Chon Buri last night. Jiraporn explained that she rode her motorcycle to drop off Htet at his apartment and asked to end the relationship. In response, Htet became enraged and stabbed her twice before stabbing himself. Jiraporn managed to crawl to a nearby house, where residents assisted her and contacted officers from Bang Lamung Police Station and emergency responders. Sadly, Htet was pronounced dead at the scene. Channel 7 reported that the apartment owner already cleaned the blood from the road outside the property but Jiraporn’s motorcycle remains stained with blood. Htet’s Burmese friend, 23 year old Salai, later informed the media that Htet had moved in with him at the apartment about a month ago. He was aware that Htet was dating a Thai woman but had never met Jiraporn. According to Salai, Htet confided in him about a conflict with his Thai girlfriend after she discovered he was already married, to a wife in Myanmar. Jiraporn, however, did not disclose this information to the media. 3. A drug-addicted Thai man in the central province of Lopburi confessed to adding pesticide to a milk bottle which resulted in the death of his four month old daughter. The 45 year old man, Suriya Thippaha, took his son-in-law, 39 year old Chatmongkhon Chaiyatha, to Lamsonthi Police Station in Lopburi province, accusing him of killing his four month old granddaughter with pesticide. Chatmongkhon’s wife, 27 year old Sukanyarat, was also present at the police station. She explained that Chatmongkhon took their daughter from their home and told her not to follow him. Their 10 year old son also accompanied the man and child. Sukanyarat later searched for Chatmongkhon and her children, eventually finding them at a small hut 500 metres from their home. She hurriedly took her daughter back, noticing the baby exhibiting unusual symptoms. Concerned, she took her daughter to the hospital, where the child later died. Suriya said he discovered a bottle of drugs in the hut and suspected Chatmongkhon of killing his daughter. The 10 year old boy reportedly told Suriya that he witnessed his father putting a mysterious substance from the bottle into the milk bottle. Chatmongkhon initially denied the accusation, claiming he intended to commit suicide using the pesticide in the white bottle. He said he accidentally spilt some of the substance on the ground and cleaned it up. Chatmongkhon speculated that the toxic residue left on his hands might have transferred to the milk bottle’s teat, indirectly causing his daughter’s death when she drank from it. Police were unconvinced by Chatmongkhon’s account and continued questioning him until he eventually confessed to the murder. He admitted to adding pesticide to his daughter’s milk bottle while under the influence of drugs. A drug test confirmed that he was positive for drugs. Officers searched the couple’s home and discovered an illegal gun in his possession. By Petch Petpailin Photo via KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-11-01

  5. A Thai teacher narrowly escaped danger after discovering a drug addict hiding in her welfare accommodation near a school in the Thong Pha Phum district, in Kanchanaburi province. The teacher reported the incident to Thong Pha Phum Police Station on Wednesday, October 30, after finding the Thai man in her room. She shared CCTV footage with the police as evidence, leading to the arrest of the suspect, 20 year old Kanchai, yesterday, October 31. In the first video, Kanchai, dressed in a T-shirt and shorts, was seen pacing outside the teacher‘s welfare accommodation at around 1.29am on Wednesday. He then walked to the back of the accommodation and disappeared. Another video captured the moment the teacher was standing outside her room, about to enter but stopped. She then made a phone call to a friend and quickly left the scene. As she was leaving, she turned around and saw Kanchai coming out of her room. The teacher’s colleagues and staff at the school attempted to apprehend Kanchai but he managed to flee. The teacher subsequently reported the incident to the police. The teacher later told Amarin TV that, upon approaching her room, she heard noises that suggested someone was inside. She called her friend, who advised her to leave, as seen in the video. Police officers eventually arrested Kanchai yesterday, October 31, at his home in the Sai Yok district of Kanchanaburi, located 10 kilometres from the incident. A community leader informed police that Kanchai had a history of drug use and often physically abused his mother when under the influence. Police reported that Kanchai was under the influence of drugs at the time of his arrest and could not provide any information about the incident. He remains detained at the police station, awaiting questioning. Following the incident, the school director was instructed to enhance security measures for teachers and other staff members living in the welfare accommodation. 7. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) chief confirmed a thorough investigation has been conducted into a high-profile fraud case involving a prominent lawyer accused of defrauding an individual out of 71 million baht. The case, filed by Jatuporn “Madam Oi” Ubonlert, accuses prominent lawyer Sittha Biabangkerd of deceiving her into investing in an online lottery business. Police Major General Montri Teskan, a senior official with the CIB, elaborated on the ongoing investigation. According to Montri, Jatuporn complained of the alleged deception, which resulted in her losing 71 million baht. Police are actively conducting interviews with Jatuporn, while further investigations are being pursued to gather additional evidence related to the case. The investigation also touches on claims that Lawyer Sittra misled Jatuporn into transferring 39 million baht to settle debts for someone close to him. This aspect remains under scrutiny as part of the broader investigation. Police are examining the origins of the relationship between Jatuporn and Sittra, their interactions, and any related activities to determine if there are grounds for legal action. Initially, Jatuporn’s complaint centres on charges of fraud. Lieutenant General Jiraphop Bhuridej, the CIB commissioner, established a task force to lead the investigation, with Police Major General Suwat Saengnum appointed as the head. The team is currently in the process of gathering information. Jiraphop emphasised that if any evidence implicates other entities, those parties will be invited to participate in the investigation. Jiraphop stated that Sittra, like any other citizen, is subject to the same legal framework. Regarding whether Sittra will be summoned for questioning soon, Jiraphop mentioned that the current focus is on compiling information from the complainant. Once sufficient evidence is collected, an invitation will be extended to the accused to provide their account. The decision to issue a summons or an arrest warrant is contingent upon the findings of the investigation, and Jiraphop reiterated that should any wrongdoing be established, comprehensive legal actions will be pursued, reported KhaoSod. 9. Thailand’s southern border districts are experiencing a significant surge in visitors from Malaysia as tourists flock across the border to celebrate Halloween and Diwali. Yesterday, October 31, marked a notable influx, with over 15,000 Malaysian tourists crossing the Sadao immigration checkpoint in Songkhla‘s Sadao district. The day coincided with Malaysia’s public holiday for the Diwali festival, prompting many to take advantage of the long weekend. Travelling by car, bus, or motorcycle, these tourists are heading to popular destinations like Hat Yai and other areas within Songkhla and neighbouring provinces. Local officials anticipate that by the end of this weekend, more than 40,000 visitors will have crossed into Thailand from Malaysia’s Kedah state. The influx of tourists has had a substantial impact on the local economy. Accommodation in the Sadao and Hat Yai districts is reportedly at full capacity, with hotels and other lodging options fully booked. Shops, restaurants, and tourism-related businesses are also seeing a significant increase in patronage, a local source noted. The Betong border checkpoint in Yala is also experiencing an unusual level of activity as tourists from Malaysia’s Perak State make their way into Thailand. Around 8,000 tourists crossed the border yesterday, many travelling in organised tour groups or with family. They are expected to spend time shopping in Betong and exploring Yala’s neighbouring districts. In Betong, hotel occupancy is reportedly at 95%, with 5,000 rooms almost fully booked through November 4. This busy period is expected to generate over 20 million baht in tourism-related revenue for the area, reported Bangkok Post. The celebration of Diwali, known as the festival of lights, holds great significance in the Hindu calendar, typically falling between October and November each year. 11. In yet another alarming tale of betrayal, the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECD) of the Central Investigation Bureau swooped in with allegations against a company accused of swindling 20 unsuspecting investors. The victims were reportedly lured into pouring their hard-earned cash into what turned out to be a phantom clean energy venture. Spearheading the charge against this audacious act of deception is Kittikhun Saenghirun, representing the Lawyers Council of Thailand (LCT), who rallied the defrauded group to file an official complaint. Aphantree, speaking on behalf of the group, recounted that towards the end of 2019, she and other victims received a link purportedly offering an investment opportunity in clean energy generators. The company allegedly promoted these machines as having both domestic and international sales potential. The company reportedly sought investors by offering shares priced at 100 baht each (US$3), with a promise of lifetime dividends starting in 50 weeks. Aphantree explained that additional earnings were promised to those who could bring in new investors. She revealed that she and other victims invested their retirement funds into the venture, beginning in September 2019. Initially, they received a 3% dividend within 30 weeks. Encouraged by this, many invested substantial amounts, ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions of baht. However, in May 2020, the officials confiscated the company’s assets, leaving investors in a lurch. In a LINE group boasting 2,000 members, the company discouraged filing complaints, attributing their financial woes to government interference and account terminations. Promises were made to repurchase shares and compensate investors, yet only the initial group of 299 individuals saw any recompense after taking the matter to court, said Aphantree. “We are not in the first group, so we ask for help with the ECD today.” Aphantree expressed her belief that there could be around 70,000 victims, many of whom may not know the legal avenues available to them, reported Bangkok Post. Kittikhun announced that the Lawyers Council of Thailand will establish a complaint centre to assist those affected in seeking legal redress. 13. A Thai schoolboy from a school in the northern province of Sukhothai today stabbed his classmate on a school bus, reportedly following an argument over seats. Officers from Sri Satchanalai Police Station were called to investigate the stabbing on a school bus parked along a road in the Sri Satchanalai district of Sukhothai at around 7.30am, today, October 31. The injured student, identified as 13 year old Joy, was stabbed by his classmate, also 13 years old, named Kong. Joy suffered a severe injury from a stab wound to his chest. He was rushed to Sri Satchanalai Hospital but, due to the severity of his condition, was transferred to Uttaradit Hospital, where better equipment was available. Both boys are in Grade 9 at Ban Pha Wiang School, attending the same class. According to reports, the victim bullied the attacker multiple times before, frequently slapping Kong on the head. This may have put pressure on Kong, potentially motivating the violent act. On the day of the incident, Kong boarded the school bus at around 7.15am before Joy. Kong may have taken Joy’s usual seat, which allegedly angered Joy. An argument ensued, escalating into a stabbing. The school bus driver managed to prevent Kong from escaping and immediately called the police. Joy’s family quickly arrived at the scene and took him to the hospital. Police seized the two-inch knife used in the attack from the vehicle. Joy’s father told Channel 7 that his son is a good boy who has never argued with anyone. He was shocked to learn about the stabbing and did not personally know Kong’s family. He mentioned that Kong’s parents recently moved from another province to work on a rubber plantation. He expressed a desire to understand why Kong committed this violent act against his son. There has been no confirmation from other students or teachers on whether Joy frequently bullied Kong, as reported in the media. 15. The Supreme Court has today reaffirmed the life sentence of a Thai school director, known only as Chumphol, for the murder of his 18-year-old girlfriend, Mayuree Yodphanao, over a decade ago. Mayuree, a factory worker in Prachin Buri, vanished in 2012 under mysterious circumstances. Her family's persistent search, leading them to seek assistance from the Mirror Foundation, eventually untangled the cold case. Eight years post her disappearance, the Mirror Foundation discovered that Mayuree's unidentified remains had been found years earlier in a sugarcane plantation in Sa Kaeo. This pivotal discovery prompted a fresh investigation by the Wattana Nakhon district police. The investigation revealed that Chumphol, a school director in Suphan Buri province, had been romantically involved with Mayuree prior to her untimely disappearance. The case took a significant turn in 2021 when Chumphol was arrested by police and charged with murder. Subsequent trials in both the Criminal and Appeals courts resulted in a life sentence, a decision now upheld by the Supreme Court. This long-awaited verdict brings closure to Mayuree’s family after more than a decade of uncertainty and anguish. Photo: Thai PBS World -- 2024-10-31

  17. In a powerful statement, 109 academics, including former central bank governors and esteemed economists, have voiced their disquiet over potential political interference in the Bank of Thailand. They caution that such meddling, driven by short-term political gains, threatens the country's economic credibility. The concern arises as the central bank's board prepares for a pivotal meeting on November 4 to appoint a new chairman and members. Reports suggest the Thai government intends to nominate Kittiratt Na Ranong, a former deputy prime minister closely linked with a political party, for the chairman post. The academics argue that placing a political figure in this role could lead to undue influence over the bank's fiscal policies, jeopardising long-term economic stability. They underline that independence is crucial for the central bank to effectively manage foreign reserves and set sound fiscal policies essential for Thailand’s economic health. The experts also forewarn that if political appointees take charge, a new politically aligned central bank governor might follow mid-next year. The group passionately appeals to the selection committee to resist external pressures, ensuring a fair and transparent appointment process that upholds the integrity of the Bank of Thailand. 19. In a significant move to combat drug trafficking, Thailand's Narcotics Control Board has appointed specialised minister counsellors to embassies in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and China. These new positions highlight Thailand's dedication to strengthening international cooperation in the fight against narcotics, according to government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub. This decision follows commitments made during the recent ASEAN summits in Vientiane, where regional leaders, including Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, agreed to tackle narcotics challenges collectively. As part of these efforts, Prime Minister Shinawatra is set to visit Roi Et province to review and enhance local anti-drug measures, including initiatives to support the rehabilitation of former addicts. During her visit, the prime minister will lead a crucial meeting at Kewatung Temple in Thawat Buri district to discuss the “Roi Et Model.” This initiative aims to offer an exemplary framework for other regions across the country in addressing drug-related issues. 21. In a landmark decision by Thailand's cabinet, individuals from ethnic minority groups who have resided in the country for at least 15 years are now eligible to apply for Thai citizenship. This new resolution is a promising development for approximately 340,000 longtime settlers and an additional 140,000 of their Thai-born children, according to Chatchai Bangchuad, Secretary-General of the National Security Council. While migrant workers from neighbouring countries who have similarly long tenures in Thailand remain excluded from this opportunity, the decision marks the continuation of a four-decade-long Thai government policy. This policy aims to integrate those unable to return to their home countries by granting them full citizenship rights, thus enabling them to fully partake in Thai society. The application process requires eligible individuals to submit a petition at local district offices. While the screening might take up to a year, the final approval to gain citizenship has been expedited to just five days. The Ministry of Interior has identified specific groups eligible for this new citizenship opportunity, including 120,000 settlers who arrived between 1984 and 1999, and another 215,000 who settled between 2005 and 2011, along with their Thai-born children. Applicants must ensure their names are listed on household registration documents, possess a 13-digit ID card, pledge loyalty to Thailand, respect the nation’s democratic system, and be unable to return to their country of origin. This move reaffirms Thailand's commitment to embracing those who have long contributed to its diverse society. File photo for reference only -- 2024-10-31

  23. Royal Thai Police apprehended a man who evaded capture for 17 years after being accused of murder. The incident, sparked by a workplace altercation, resulted in the suspect fatally attacking a colleague with a cleaver. The suspect confessed to being haunted by the victim’s ghost post-crime, prompting sleepless nights. The capture of 49 year old Jamlong took place yesterday, October 30, outside a residence in Udon Thani’s Wang Sam Mo district. Police apprehended him under a murder charge as per the arrest warrant issued by the Rayong Provincial Court in 2007. This arrest was the culmination of an operation led by senior officers from the Crime Suppression Division, including Teerachat, Siwawong, Atch, Natthaphat, and Narit. The origins of this case date back to July 2007 in Rayong province. Jamlong and the victim were colleagues with a fraught relationship. Jamlong claimed that the victim, who often engaged in intimidating behaviour, exacerbated tensions by frequently taunting him. On the fateful day, the two encountered each other at a local eatery. Jamlong alleged that the victim, appearing intoxicated, approached him with menacing remarks, leading to a heated exchange. In the ensuing altercation, Jamlong grabbed a cleaver and struck the victim’s neck, resulting in an immediate fatality. Following the incident, Jamlong fled the scene, initiating a lengthy period of evasion from law enforcement. Over the years, investigators from the Crime Suppression Division diligently pursued leads, finally culminating in his capture yesterday. During interrogation, Jamlong admitted to the crime, revealing that he was plagued by the victim’s ghost for a significant period following the murder. He recounted how this haunting experience affected his sleep until he performed a merit-making ceremony, which he believed alleviated the ghostly disturbances, reported KhaoSod. “After the incident, I was haunted by the deceased, unable to sleep until I made merit.” Following his confession, police transferred Jamlong to the Rayong City Police Station for further legal proceedings.
