  1. A 100-year-old parkia speciosa tree in Trang, Thailand earns as much as 40,000 baht a year due to the high demand for its large, tasty pods. Satit Ramna, owner of the tree located in Na Yong district's Suan Ta Chan Tonmai Panpi, employs locals to harvest the pods from his four century-old trees. Despite a recent three-month drought, each tree is set to produce 800 to 1,000 pods, just a bit fewer than usual. Selling between 3.50 and 5 baht each, the pods continue to be popular because of their size - as large as a 5 baht coin - and their quality - long and large. Locally known as sato, these parkia speciosa pods are unique in their flavor. Satit promises their rich, nutty taste, along with a gentler aroma, sets them above other types. The mineral-rich soil of Na Yong, from the nearby Banthat mountains, enhances the quality of these pods. The result? Crispy, slightly bitter pods that fans pre-order each year - and a yearly income of 30,000 to 40,000 baht. Satit’s family has been growing these trees, originally from Banthat mountains, for three generations. Only four of the trees survive today, but they continue to draw in customers due to their reputation. With the ability to produce pods all year, these trees assure a continuous supply. Two types of parkia speciosa are available: sato khao and sato dan. Sato khao is favored for its softer texture and weaker scent, perfect for eating raw, in curry dishes or with chili paste. The sato dan variety is bigger and tougher, with a stronger smell, and is less popular. The pods are not just a culinary delight, they also offer health benefits. They are believed to provide anti-aging effects, lessen wrinkles, and improve eye health owing to the calcium and phosphorus in them. They are also said to aid in blood flow and decrease anemia. Often, leftover pods are pickled and sold online nationwide. According to Satit, the trees have been producing 50 to 100 pods at a time throughout the year. The pods are bought by local vendors for 3.50 to 5 baht each. Satit proudly attests that Na Yong's unique climate and mountain soil are the secrets to the special taste of his parkia speciosa. Satit has a loyal customer in Phetchaburi who orders around 3,000 pods per year, refusing any other variety. As soon as the pods are harvested, vendors snap them up, thus ensuring none get wasted. And given that each tree produces about 3,000 pods annually, it proves these trees continue to be remarkably productive. 5. The Thai Restaurant Association has cited a troubling downturn in consumer spending, with sales plummeting below 50%, an issue raised on 9th September 2024 by Mrs. Thaniwan Kulmongkol, the association's president. She has called for more detailed explanation and concrete steps in the government’s 10 urgent policies to address the crisis. The restaurant industry has been battered by multiple challenges, including stiff competition from cheap imported goods and foreign businesses facilitated by the TEMU Chinese application. Thaniwan stressed the importance of government support for SMEs and a more stringent execution of the laws that protect local enterprises. The association has presented three immediate requests: 1. Reassess the planned nationwide minimum wage hike to 400 baht, set to take effect on 1st October, to mitigate additional strain on businesses. 2. Implement measures to cap or reduce energy costs, such as electricity bills. 3. Fast-track the disbursement of the 2024-2025 budget to inject funds into the economy, thus boosting consumer spending. Particularly hard-hit regions like the North and Northeast are experiencing even more severe declines. The association supports the government's upcoming initiative to distribute 10,000-baht digital wallets in September but insists that these funds should be usable in all types of eateries, including small, family-run restaurants, not just major chains. Thaniwan aims for a holistic response from the government, hoping to revitalise the sector and support struggling businesses. The association's plea underscores the need for immediate and effective actions to safeguard the future of Thailand’s vibrant restaurant industry, reported The Pattaya News. 7. Floodwaters have inundated Sailomjoy Market in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, for the eighth time this year, according to local authorities on Tuesday. The persistent flooding is directly linked to heavy rains driven by Typhoon Yagi's remnants, which initially hit Vietnam. Despite the typhoon weakening into a low-pressure system, the area continues to endure torrential downpours. This has led to rising water levels in the Sai River, resulting in extensive flooding throughout the market. Vendors have scrambled to evacuate and transport their goods to higher ground, with the area beneath the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge being particularly hard-hit. Floodwaters have reached as far as the market’s intersection, causing significant disruptions. In the Chiang Khong district, the Mekong River has also swollen due to increased rainfall and water flow from its tributaries. Local authorities are on high alert, vigilantly monitoring the situation in Chiang Saen, Chiang Khong, and Wiang Kaen districts to mitigate potential damage. The Thai Meteorological Department has issued stern warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the northern, northeastern, and eastern parts of the country. They caution residents to prepare for possible flash floods and landslides as the extreme weather continues to batter the region. 17. In a bold move to improve marine transport, the Thai Marine Department is fast-tracking the construction of four piers that will form the new Andaman marine ring route. This initiative is expected to cut travel time between Phuket and Krabi by a remarkable 90 minutes. Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced that the project supports Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra’s vision to enhance infrastructure, making transport smoother for both goods and passengers. "This project is vital to boosting our economy and tourism," stated Manaporn, underscoring the significance of the development. With a projected budget of 740 million baht, the Andaman marine ring will connect Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi, reshaping the regional transport landscape. The current 145-kilometre road journey between Krabi and Phuket airports takes three and a half hours. The new marine route will reduce this to a two-hour, 97-kilometre sea voyage. This reduction in travel time is anticipated to be a catalyst for tourism growth in Phang Nga, a province poised to benefit from the increased traffic. Kritphet Chaichuay, Director-General of the Marine Department, confirmed that initial efforts will focus on upgrading two existing piers - Manoh Pier on Koh Yao Noi and Chong Lard Pier on Koh Yao Yai. These upgrades, with an allocated 360 million baht, are expected to start this year and finish by 2026. "These piers are in dire need of renovation," Kritphet added, emphasising the necessity of these improvements. The renovations will introduce modern facilities, including a new service building, passenger lounge, larger car parks, and enhanced docking capabilities. Plans are underway to secure an additional 380 million baht for the construction of two more piers in Phuket and Krabi, aimed to be operational by 2027. This strategic development marks a significant step in transforming marine transport in Southern Thailand, positioning the Andaman marine ring as a game-changer for the region's connectivity and tourism. 20. Thai Finance Minister Calls for Tax Reform to Boost Economic Growth File photo for reference only Thailand’s Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, pushed for comprehensive tax reforms during his speech at the ACMA Business Forum 2024. Pichai stressed that Thailand’s personal and corporate income tax rates are higher than those of many competing nations, a discrepancy that could hinder the country's economic growth. The Minister underlined a global trend of lowering such taxes to stay competitive internationally. 21. Thailand’s Finance Minister, Pichai Chunhavajira, pushed for comprehensive tax reforms during his speech at the ACMA Business Forum 2024. Pichai stressed that Thailand’s personal and corporate income tax rates are higher than those of many competing nations, a discrepancy that could hinder the country's economic growth. The Minister underlined a global trend of lowering such taxes to stay competitive internationally. In discussing value-added tax (VAT), Pichai noted that it is a consumption-based tax, meaning those who purchase more will pay more. He advocated for an equitable application of VAT while suggesting that part of the revenue should support low-income individuals. Debt restructuring, particularly for home and car loans, was another focal point. Pichai recognised the challenges this entails but stressed its importance for financial stability, which, in turn, benefits banks. He warned that allowing more loan defaults could weaken even the currently strong financial institutions. Reflecting on Thailand’s economic trajectory, Pichai recalled the high GDP growth rates of 9-10% in the 1980s, driven by a strong investment ratio. However, he observed a stark contrast today, with the investment ratio down to 19-20%, contributing to slower economic growth. Excluding the Covid-19 period, the average growth rate in recent years has been 1.9%, far below the potential 3.5%. Pichai also highlighted the importance of a flexible exchange rate for the baht, given that export revenue constitutes a significant 65% of GDP. He emphasised that the exchange rate should be guided by market mechanisms. Addressing the stock market’s positive trends, Pichai credited the confidence in the new government's policies, adjustments to investment rules, and the promotion of new funds aligned with these policies. He projected that maintaining a trading volume range of 60-80 billion baht (approximately US$1.8-2.3 billion) was attainable with increased economic confidence. Pichai's call for tax system integration and reform reflects a push to realign Thailand with global standards, aiming at fostering sustainable economic development. 23. Thailand's Department of Livestock Development announced today that China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) has approved three additional Thai poultry processing facilities for export. This increases the total number of certified plants to 26, reflecting a strong endorsement of Thailand's stringent control and regulatory systems. This development underscores the confidence China has in Thailand's adherence to international standards such as Good Hygiene Practices (GHPs) and the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) system. These standards are crucial for ensuring compliance with the inspection, quarantine, and veterinary hygiene requirements outlined in the bilateral protocol between the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and China’s customs authority. China is a vital trade partner for Thailand, particularly in the livestock sector. In 2023, the value of Thailand’s frozen poultry exports to China was 16.9 billion baht. For the first half of 2024, exports have already reached over 8 billion baht, with projections suggesting that the total value for 2024 could surpass 18 billion baht. This growing trend in exports extends beyond China. Thailand’s poultry exports to global markets such as Japan, the United Kingdom, Europe, Malaysia, and South Korea have also experienced significant growth. Last year, the total value of Thai poultry exports reached 149.975 billion baht. In the first six months of 2024, exports stood at 76.745 billion baht, marking a 7% increase over the same period last year. Somchuan Ratanamungklanon, Director-General of the Department of Livestock Development, emphasized that the continuous approval of Thai poultry facilities by China is a testament to the high standards maintained. This approval solidifies Thailand's position as a leading exporter in the global poultry market, ensuring continued economic growth and strengthened bilateral trade relations. 25. In the wake of devastating floods, a rural Thai school has been thrown a lifeline—clean drinking water. Disaster Aid Thailand and Disaster Aid Australia, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Chiang Khong, installed a SkyHydrant water filtration system at Pang Hat Sahasat School, Wiang Kaen district, Chiang Rai province on September 5 and 6. The installation couldn’t have come at a better time, as recent floods had left the school and village in crisis. The flooding, caused by torrential rain from Doi Pha Tang on August 22 and 31, wreaked havoc on the community. Classrooms were submerged, buildings and equipment were damaged, and the drinking water supply was contaminated, leaving students and locals without access to clean water. The situation had become so dire that the health of over 550 students, including 142 boarders, was at risk. School director Maitree Yala stated that the new system provides much-needed relief after the disaster. “Our students can now access safe water again.” The SkyHydrant system was the fourth of its kind to be installed at the school, providing a reliable source of clean water for both students and the surrounding community. It has quickly become a critical part of the recovery effort, offering hope in a time of need. Volunteers, teachers, and locals also rallied together for a massive cleanup operation. Thick mud and debris left by the floods were cleared, helping to restore the school grounds and buildings. Led by Rotarians from Thailand and Australia, including Captain Dol Adinan and Brian Ashworth, the project’s success was celebrated by the entire community, which now looks forward to resuming normal life with one less worry, reported Pattaya Mail.
