Trouble brews in Mukdahan as the pervasive odor from a neighbouring cannabis farm disrupts a local kindergarten. The issue, flagged by teachers and parents, centres on cannabis plants cultivated on a building directly opposite the school. The strong smell and leaks from the farm's rooftop and interior are causing significant distress, school officials report. Mr. Adul Siriman, Head of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation at Mukdahan Municipality, confirmed that initial complaints to local authorities have gone unaddressed. The farm's owner insists on having legal permission from Mukdahan Provincial Public Health Office to cultivate cannabis. Municipal officials' inspections reveal cannabis plants flourishing on the rooftop, exacerbating the odour problem. The smell of maturing cannabis plants, along with fertilizers and chemicals used to boost flowering, complicates the situation further. Not to mention, frequent power outages in the area, attributed to the cultivation site's high air conditioning and misting system usage, add to the woes. Mr. Siriman assured that the municipality plans to work with government agencies to address the complaints and urgently review the cannabis cultivation permit in question. The well-being of the school’s children and the broader community remains the top priority, reported The Pattaya News. A significant transportation project for Phuket province sees the spotlight as Somkid Kittisopit, the new Director of the Phuket Highways Office, confirms an 80 million baht feasibility study for the new Sarasin Bridge. Announced during a meeting with Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat at Phuket Provincial Hall, this bridge is part of the MR9 network's second phase and aims to enhance connectivity between Phang Nga and Phuket. Designed to connect Takua Thung district in Phang Nga to Thalang district in Phuket, the new Sarasin Bridge will also integrate with an expressway linking Highway No. 4 to Mueang Mai, Koh Kaew, and Kathu. Furthermore, this development includes a dual-track railway, completing the northern section of Phuket’s long-anticipated light rail system. Somkid emphasised that the project’s primary goals are improving accessibility, reducing traffic congestion, and ensuring a safer travel route. Beyond easing transportation woes, the bridge is poised to boost economic growth and facilitate larger maritime vessels' navigation through the Chong Pak Phra channel, supporting regional maritime activities. The MR9 falls within a broader Department of Highways’ MR-MAP plan, encompassing 10 motorway-railway routes across Thailand, backed by a 457 billion baht budget over five years. This initiative aims to optimise road area management and lessen community disruption. Somkid also provided updates on other vital transport initiatives: Heroines Underpass: Recently passed Environmental Impact Assessments, with budget approval for a 2.38 billion baht construction extending to 2024-2027. Route 4027 Expansion: With a 650 million baht budget, this project aims to extend the road through Pa Khlok, enhancing a key 4.55 km section. New Road to Phuket Airport: Budgeted at 1.3 billion baht for a 1.95 km stretch, aimed at reducing traffic on Thepkrasattri Road, its completion is scheduled for 2025. Pa Khlok – Bang Khu Highway Study: A 20 million baht study evaluating new highway connections to ease congestion, expected to conclude in 12 months. These initiatives, particularly the new Sarasin Bridge, promise to transform Phuket’s transportation framework, highlighting the region’s commitment to modernising its infrastructure and fostering economic development. Bangkok's ambitious launch of its new electric BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) on the Sathorn-Ratchaphruek route on September 1 has been marred by numerous issues, triggering widespread criticism and commuter frustration. The roll-out saw only 16 of the planned 23 buses in operation, leading to overcrowding and longer waiting times. Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon provided an update yesterday, highlighting the problems plaguing the service. Key among them is the extended gap between bus departures, now stretched to every 12 minutes from the previous seven, exacerbating delays especially during peak hours. Compounding commuter woes are the malfunctioning sensor-controlled doors on the new EV buses, causing further delays as the safety mechanisms struggle to cope with obstructions. Adding to the inconvenience, the new low-floor buses require passengers to step down to board, a departure from the previous design that aligned with station platforms. The struggle doesn’t end there. The building of a promised charging station at Chong Nonsi has been delayed due to contractual issues, forcing the BMA to use a less convenient alternative location. This logistical hiccup is further hampering the reliability of the service. The official Facebook page Footpath Thai Style captured the chaos with live updates showing long queues and frustrated commuters at Sathorn station. Complaints ranged from bus breakdowns to unauthorised vehicles utilising BRT lanes, contributing to erratic service timings. As questions arise over the preparedness of the service, some suggest that the free trial period could be exacerbating the situation by attracting more users than usual. Despite these challenges, the BMA assures the public that solutions are underway, and urges patience as they work to smooth out the teething problems and meet commuter expectations. A petrol station in Bang Rakam district, Phitsanulok province, is under scrutiny after an employee allegedly attempted to charge a customer without dispensing any fuel. The incident was captured on video and rapidly gained attention on social media. The video, shared by a customer on the Facebook page "อยากดังเดี๋ยวจัดให้ รีเทริน์ part 7," showcases the moment the customer confronted the employee. According to the customer's account, the worker inserted the nozzle into the car but did not dispense any petrol. Instead, he took a seat and later returned with a bottle of water, ready to collect payment. As the customer realised no fuel had been dispensed, he confronted the employee, who appeared surprised and flustered. "You haven’t even pumped any petrol for me yet, kid. This is a joke," the customer can be heard saying in the video. The employee then pumped the petrol after being confronted. Upon questioning, he claimed the pump had malfunctioned, causing the issue. The customer, sceptical but in a hurry, acknowledged the explanation before leaving. The incident, occurring near the Bang Rakam River bridge, has sparked widespread concern among social media users. Many expressed fears of similar experiences at other stations and called for stringent oversight and accountability measures. The video quickly went viral, prompting numerous comments and discussions about the integrity of service at petrol stations. While the employee’s explanation of a pump malfunction might seem possible, it has done little to ease the public's concerns. With the surging attention, many are urging petrol stations to implement better training and monitoring systems to ensure such incidents do not recur, thereby protecting customers from potential scams. A Thai woman lost her life, and her husband is critically ill after they allegedly drank coffee mixed with sappan wood - a substance believed to offer health benefits. Doctors found an unknown poisonous compound in their bodies. 49-year-old Naree Chaisirin died on Sunday, September 1, while her husband, 44-year-old Monkhon Chaisirin, is still hospitalized. The couple suddenly had seizures and passed out after drinking coffee which contained sappan wood. The couple's son, 21-year-old Worrawit Chaisirin, said his father was the first to show signs of illness, which led him and his mother to tend to him. As he was seeking medical help over the phone for his father, his mother began to experience the same symptoms and fell unconscious. Despite immediate CPR efforts, her life couldn't be saved. Worrawit describes that his parents regularly drank sappan wood by adding a couple of pieces in their boiling water to make coffee. They sourced the sappan wood from an herbal storefront located in a market near their residence in Sisaket, a province in Isaan. As per Worrawit, his parents, along with others in their community, trusted that sappan wood held health benefits, with some even stating it could help treat cancer. Although Worrawit suspects the sappan wood as the cause, the doctors at Sisaket Hospital found toxic compounds in both their bodies, with a higher concentration in Naree's. The specific toxic compound is yet to be identified. Interestingly, Naree's elder sister, 50-year-old Somboon Panpinit, consumes the identical sappan wood without experiencing any negative effects. She is keen on discovering what caused her sister's sudden death. Monkhon, in an interview after gaining consciousness, conveyed that he had been drinking this concoction for a long time without experiencing such symptoms. He assured that nobody would have wanted to harm them as they didn't have any enemies. Kui Lim Hueng, the owner of a traditional Chinese medicine store, informed Channel 7 that sappan wood, with its bittersweet and astringent taste, is refreshing and has been used to promote blood circulation for a long time. However, he cautioned against its usage during pregnancy and regular consumption. The case is still under investigation. Thailand Leads Infidelity Statistics Globally File photo for reference only Ever wondered how your country fared in a worldwide study of unfaithfulness? Ever wondered how your country fared in a worldwide study of unfaithfulness? A report recently identified the 25 countries where infidelity tends to occur most. It's vital to note that living in one of the top 10 countries with high infidelity rates doesn't necessarily mean you'll marry a cheater. Conversely, living where cheating rates are low doesn't secure a happy marriage. Still, deciphering these trends can provide useful insights into global behaviour and norms. Research suggests that economic adversity, such as seen in certain areas of Scotland termed the world's infidelity capitals, can contribute to unfaithfulness. Factors like anger, low self-esteem, lack of affection, and craving diversity often prompt people to be unfaithful. Intriguingly, many who cheat still value monogamy, with motivations varying among genders. Men typically cheat when they feel unloved, while women become unfaithful when feeling unattractive. To gain a better understanding, a study by Bebdible Research Centre in September 2022 examines global infidelity trends in-depth. The study analyzes over 1.9 million data points from 23,872 respondents, provides an overview of change in infidelity rates since 1960, and discusses trends in relation to gender, age, and nationality. Here are some countries with the highest rates of infidelity: Cyprus (34%): Despite being a popular wedding destination, about 34% of its residents have been unfaithful. Argentina (34%): Even in this Latin American country, about 34% of the populace has cheated, proving that even a legal ceremony can't ensure fidelity. United States (35%): A study by Pew Research found that approximately 35% of married Americans have been unfaithful. Thailand (51%): Thailand tops the list, with an infidelity rate influenced by cultural norms such as mia noi (translated as 'little wife') and a booming sex industry Here's the full list: 1. Thailand, 2. Denmark, 3. Germany, 4. Italy, 5. France, 6.Norway, 7. Belgium, 8. Spain, 9. Finland, 10. United Kingdom, 11. Canada, 12. Greece, 13. Luxembourg, 14. Austria, 15. Brazil, 16. Iceland, 17. Netherlands, 18. Portugal, 19. Sweden, 20. United States, 21. Argentina, 22. Australia, 23. Bahamas, 24. Croatia, 25. Cyprus. Thailand is set to enhance its natural disaster warning system significantly with a major expansion of automated monitoring stations. Yesterday, September 3, the Friends in Need Volunteers Foundation joined forces with various national agencies, signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) for the second phase of this nationwide initiative aimed at bolstering flood and disaster protection. This ambitious project, inspired by the efforts of Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha and His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, will see the addition of over 500 telemetry stations across Thailand. A foundation spokesperson expressed that these stations are crucial for real-time disaster surveillance, timely warnings, and efficient evacuations. “Over 510 automated telemetry stations will be established in watershed forests, providing critical data for disaster monitoring and water management nationwide,” the spokesperson stated. The new phase builds upon a successful first launch in February 2020, which saw 242 stations come online. These stations will transmit vital data to the National Hydroinformatics Data Centre, and heavy rain warnings will be directly sent to citizens via the LINE app. While the current network covers 19 flood-prone communities, the new expansion aims to reach substantially more areas. The second phase brings together ten national agencies, including the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC), the Royal Forest Department, and the Royal Thai Army, ensuring comprehensive and coordinated efforts in disaster management that will better protect lives and property across Thailand. Thai man’s tragic end: Suicide at Phuket resort after affair exposed Photo via KomChadLuek A Thai man yesterday committed suicide in front of his mistress at a resort in Phuket after his wife discovered his secret affair. A Thai man yesterday committed suicide in front of his mistress at a resort in Phuket after his wife discovered his secret affair. Officers from Patong Police Station were alerted to the suicide of the 40 year old Thai man named Sajeecha yesterday, September 3, and attended the scene at The Natural Resort to investigate. The forensic team from Vachira Phuket Hospital also participated in the operation. Officers met the deceased’s mistress, Janjira, in room 1114, where the incident took place. Janjira admitted that she knew Sajeecha was married and was aware that his wife operated a cannabis shop on Phra Metta Road. According to Janjira, she had booked the room and arranged to meet Sajeecha as usual. However, on that day, his wife discovered the affair, causing Sajeecha considerable stress. While they were together in the room, Sajeecha pulled out his 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol and shot himself in the head in front of Janjira. Sajeecha’s body was found near the door and was later transferred to Patong Hospital for an autopsy to confirm the cause of death. Sajeecha’s wife was not present at the scene and no further details about their relationship were disclosed. In a related report, a Thai man attempted suicide by jumping off a pedestrian bridge in Bangkok last week after he cheated on his wife by engaging with other women online, who then scammed him out of money. Rescuers intervened in time to save him. He revealed to the rescue team that he had cheated on his wife multiple times before and was scammed by women he met online on several occasions. Although the total loss was less than 1,000 baht, he was disappointed that he could not take legal action against the scammers. The police informed the media that they could not pursue legal action against the women, as the man had willingly given them the money. Bangkok’s flood defences on high alert: River embankment boost Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced that the Chao Phraya River embankment is ready to handle the first surge of northern floodwaters, with an additional capacity of 1.75 metres. Officials are ordering drainage in canals and warning 17 communities outside the embankment to prepare for potential flooding tomorrow. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1337286-bangkok’s-flood-defences-on-high-alert-river-embankment-boost/ -
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced that the Chao Phraya River embankment is ready to handle the first surge of northern floodwaters, with an additional capacity of 1.75 metres. Officials are ordering drainage in canals and warning 17 communities outside the embankment to prepare for potential flooding tomorrow. Chadchart, alongside Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon and the Drainage and Sewerage Department, inspected the Chao Phraya River embankment from Wat Soi Thong in Bang Sue district to Thewet Pier in Phra Nakhon district. The 58 year old Bangkok chief explained that the area near Wat Soi Thong in Bang Sue district borders Nonthaburi province. Yesterday, September 3, the water level rose by 25 centimetres, reaching a height of 1.75 metres above mean sea level, up from 1.50 metres the day before. The embankment stands at 3.5 metres high, sufficient to handle more water, but caution remains crucial. The governor and his team then boarded a boat to assess the readiness of the embankment along the Chao Phraya River from Wat Soi Thong Pier to Thewet Pier. Chadchart noted that the water level is still significantly below the embankment. Sandbags have been added to areas with gaps to strengthen the barrier. Chadchart also highlighted that the northern section of Bangkok’s embankment is higher than the southern part because it is more affected by northern floodwaters. The embankment in the north is approximately 3.5 metres high, gradually decreasing to about 2.8 metres in Bang Na. At Thewet Pier, which lies outside the embankment, there is a high risk of flooding. Bangkok has 17 communities outside the embankment, including Wat Devaraj Kunchon Worawihan Community in Dusit District, which will inevitably be impacted by rising waters. Embankment readiness Chadchart made known that every point of the embankment was inspected to ensure no gaps. “Even a small breach can cause significant problems. While the situation is not yet critical, vigilance is necessary due to the potential for heavy rainfall influenced by a low-pressure trough over Bangkok. Thus, we have ordered the drainage of canals in preparation for both northern floodwaters and rain.” The Flood Prevention Control Centre in Bangkok reported moderate to heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours. The highest rainfall recorded was 87.5 millimetres in the Phra Khanong district, followed by 78.5 millimetres in the Thung Khru district and 73.5 millimetres in the Bang Na district. Phra Khanong Pumping Station in Khlong Toei district recorded 68.5 millimetres, while Khlong Prawet-Wat Khachonsiri in Suan Luang district registered 63 millimetres. Water levels at eastern floodgates today are as follows: Khlong Song (South Line) Floodgate at 7am recorded a level of 1.07 metres above mean sea level, below the critical level of 1.80 metres. Saen Saep (Min Buri) Floodgate at 7am recorded -0.02 metres, below the critical level of 0.90 metres. Lat Krabang Floodgate at 7am recorded -0.20 metres, below the critical level of 0.60 metres. The highest water levels in the Chao Phraya River yesterday were recorded at Bang Na Pumping Station at 8pm and Pak Khlong Talat Floodgate at 9pm, both at 1.70 metres above mean sea level. Bang Khen Mai Pumping Station recorded 1.78 metres at 9pm. Today, the highest water level at the Royal Thai Navy Headquarters was 0.67 metres at 6.11am and 1.05 metres at 8.30pm, reported KhaoSod. Today’s water flow rate in the Chao Phraya River includes 1,551 cubic metres per second at Nakhon Sawan, 1,449 cubic metres per second at Chao Phraya Dam, and an average of 1,378 cubic metres per second at Bang Sai Royal Folk Arts and Crafts Centre.
