  2. Two drunken foreign men have become famous in Phuket after videos went viral of the pair fighting over a Thai woman outside an entertainment venue in the Rawai neighbourhood. Footage and images of the altercation on Saturday night, September 7, between the two foreigners were shared by the news Facebook page Phuket Times on September 8. “Farang boxing show! It took place in Soi Saiyuan, in the Rawai sub-district. They caused trouble while drunk, fighting each other over a Thai woman. One of them even tried to run his car over the other.” The foreign man in khaki-green shorts was seen challenging another foreign man in salmon-pink shorts to a fight. The Thai man recording the video said, “He (the man in salmon-pink shorts) started the fight. I don’t think the man with black hair is drunk.” The two men were shouting at each other but the music from the nearby venue drowned out their conversation. They faced off for some time before the man in khaki-green shorts initiated the fight by attempting to kick his opponent. The man in salmon-pink shorts avoided the kick and tried to punch his rival, who stepped back to avoid the blow. In another video, the man in salmon-pink shorts was struck by a white SUV, driven by the foreigner in khaki-green shorts, and collapsed to the ground. While many Thai netizens found the brawl amusing, others called on the police to take the incident seriously and deport the foreigners responsible. “Those two must be deported.” “Thai women, Thailand’s soft power!” “Free boxing show!” “She must be very beautiful.” “Not surprising. This happens all the time in Rawai.” “They only study Muay Thai for this!” “All the world’s criminals gather in Phuket.” “This is the result of the visa-free promotion.” “Great tourists! Visa-free? Thai bar girls already have sponsors.” It remains unclear if the fight was over a Thai woman as she was not present in any of the videos. Fortunately, no one appeared to be seriously injured during the incident. 3. Size matters: Thai barber goes viral for pricing list based on penis size - video Photo via Channel 7 A barber in the central province of Ayutthaya went viral on Thai social media for charging customers based on the size of their penis, rather than the length of their hair. 4. A barber in the central province of Ayutthaya went viral on Thai social media for charging customers based on the size of their penis, rather than the length of their hair. A picture of the service price list at the barber shop in Ayutthaya was shared by numerous Thai news agencies and netizens. The pricing list stated, “Small penis 40 baht, Medium penis 60 baht, Large penis 80 baht, and Mo (modified) penis 100 baht.” The barber, 40 year old Apirak “Tee” Klinbuppha, shared in an interview with Channel 3 that he opened the barber shop just three months ago and received very positive feedback. He believed that the service fees based on penis size played an important role in attracting customers. Apirak explained that he had been searching for his dream job for over eight years and had worked in various industries before finding happiness as a barber. His shop, located near one of Ayutthaya’s popular tourist attractions, Prasat Nakhon Luang, was decorated in a vintage style to match with historical attractions. Apirak mentioned that he had not yet named his barber shop and had not planned any advertising for it. He did not expect the humorous service fee to make his business go viral, explaining that it reflected his personality. He described himself as a cheerful person who enjoys spreading good vibes. In the interview, Apirak explained the pricing system further. “The service fee actually depends on the customer’s age and hairstyle, like in other barber shops. I charge children, such as those in primary school, the small penis fee of 40 baht. High school students are charged the medium penis fee of 60 baht, while adult customers pay the large penis fee of 80 baht. Any customer wanting a more complex hairstyle is required to pay 100 baht.” Apirak added that he also provides free services to old people, people with disabilities, and young children. He emphasised that the humorous pricing wasn’t the only attraction, as he was confident in his skills and assured that every customer would leave satisfied. One customer gave a light-hearted interview to the media while getting his haircut. ‘I chose this barber shop because of the price sign outside. If I hadn’t seen the sign, I wouldn’t have picked this place. I’m curious to see how much it will cost because my size is quite impressive. 6. A Thai man who bought a lottery ticket from a mentally unstable man and promised to share the winnings if he won, kept his word after winning. The incident, shared on TikTok, has garnered widespread admiration for his honesty. TikTok user @monrudeeyensabai posted a clip yesterday of her husband who decided to buy a lottery ticket from a mentally unstable man for 100 baht, instead of the original 80 baht. He told the man that if he won, he would give him 1,000 baht. To everyone’s surprise, the ticket won a two-digit prize. After deducting expenses, the winnings amounted to 1,300 baht. True to his word, the TikTok user’s husband gave 1,000 baht to the mentally ill man and kept 300 baht for himself. The post humorously concluded, “So, who’s really crazy?” The post quickly went viral, attracting numerous comments praising the kindhearted man’s integrity. “It’s not about profits or losses. I see the honesty and integrity of your husband, who didn’t take advantage and kept his promise. That’s truly valuable, worth more than 300 baht.” The TikTok user responded, “Thank you very much. I chose the right person, didn’t I?” “You are truly fortunate. You picked the right person; he is honest and keeps his word.” The woman responded, “He came asking for money at the drink shop next door. My husband saw him and quickly gave him the promised money.” The TikTok video, accompanied by the audio track, Stealthy Mischief by KBYS, has been widely shared and appreciated. The husband’s actions have been lauded as a rare display of genuine honesty and integrity, encouraging others to follow suit, reported KhaoSod. 7. Baht volatility surpasses regional currencies amid US rate cut speculation Picture courtesy of Thairath The baht has shown notable volatility against the US dollar, surpassing its regional counterparts primarily due to market expectations of a US policy rate cut and Thailand’s substantial gold imports. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1337807-baht-volatility-surpasses-regional-currencies-amid-us-rate-cut-speculation/
  8. The baht has shown notable volatility against the US dollar, surpassing its regional counterparts primarily due to market expectations of a US policy rate cut and Thailand’s substantial gold imports. Year-to-date, the baht’s volatility rate is 7.3%, just below the Korean won’s 7.4%. However, it exceeds other regional currencies, with the Malaysian ringgit and Indonesian rupiah at 5.5%, the Philippine peso at 4.7%, the Taiwanese dollar at 4.1%, the Singapore dollar at 3.7%, and the Vietnamese dong at 2.4%. In contrast, the US Dollar Index has recorded a volatility rate of 5.3%, as reported by Kasikorn Research (K-Research). This index measures the value of the US dollar relative to a basket of foreign currencies, often those of key US trade partners. The baht has been particularly unstable since yesterday, fluctuating between 33.45 and 33.78 baht per dollar, influenced by global gold prices. On September 6, it reached a 19-month high of 33.49 against the dollar. Yesterday, September 9, the baht opened at 33.63 per dollar, depreciating sharply from the closing rate of 33.52 to the greenback on September 6. This week, it is expected to move within a range of 33.30-34 baht per dollar. Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of research for banking and the financial sector at K-Research, highlighted key factors to monitor, including the new government’s economic policies, foreign fund flows, global gold price movements, and US economic data. Baht volatility Poon Panitchpibun, a money market strategist at Krungthai Global Markets, attributed the baht’s significant depreciation to the dollar and gold price movements based on US economic data. In August, US non-farm payrolls increased by 142,000 positions, below the market expectation of 160,000. However, employment rates improved in some segments. This scenario led some investors to revise their expectations, predicting that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) would not cut its policy rate by 50 basis points as previously expected, thereby supporting a stronger dollar compared to the baht. Krungthai forecasts the baht will move in a range of 33.40 to 34.10 per dollar this week. Separately, TTB Analytics projects continued volatility for the baht, driven largely by the dollar in line with the Fed’s policy rate direction and the upward trend in global gold prices. The gold price surged 21% year-to-date (as of September 3), aligning more closely with the baht’s movement than with other regional currencies. Thailand ranks among the top global gold trading nations, representing an average of 5% of global gold trading over the past five years, according to TTB Analytics, reported Bangkok Post. Thailand’s gold imports are also higher than those of other regional countries, reflecting the gold investment preferences of Thai investors, TTB Analytics noted. 9. Thai woman left blind and disfigured after misdiagnosis Photo via Amarin TV A Thai woman is demanding accountability and compensation from doctors and a hospital in the Phahonyothin neighbourhood of Bangkok after a misdiagnosis and medicine allergy left her blind and disfigured. 10. A Thai woman is demanding accountability and compensation from doctors and a hospital in the Phahonyothin neighbourhood of Bangkok after a misdiagnosis and medicine allergy left her blind and disfigured. The victim, Sasinan, and her husband sought assistance from non-profit organisation Saimai Survive after she lost her sight and suffered facial disfigurement due to the recklessness of a doctor at a private hospital in Bangkok. Initially, she only had conjunctivitis and a sore throat but the treatment not only failed to resolve her symptoms, it made them worse. Sasinan explained that she developed conjunctivitis and a sore throat on June 18 and took medication from a pharmacy near her home but her symptoms did not improve. She then visited a private hospital for further diagnosis and treatment. The doctor informed her that she was suffering from tonsillitis and required an antihistamine injection. She followed the doctor’s recommendation and returned home. Unfortunately, she soon experienced chest tightness, a rash all over her body, blurred vision, and swollen lips. She sought advice from the hospital, and the nurse suggested she return to see the doctor on June 21. Another doctor then diagnosed her with chickenpox and administered the same antihistamine injection. This time, she was admitted to the hospital. Shortly after the second injection, her condition worsened. Her right eye became more blurred, and she lost sight in her left eye. Stevens-Johnson syndrome On June 22, Sasinan was rushed to the intensive care unit (ICU) and was given another injection of the same medication. She reported feeling dizzy and numb throughout her body. She remained in the ICU for seven days, but her condition did not improve. Sasinan was then transferred to another hospital, where it was discovered that she was allergic to the antihistamine administered by the first hospital and that she was suffering from Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which is typically triggered by a reaction to medications, infections, or, rarely, vaccines. Her symptoms progressed during her stay at the second hospital, which lasted for one month and 15 days. She was later transferred back to the first hospital. The medical team there discharged her even though she had not regained her vision and still had wounds on her face and body. Sasinan stated that she can no longer live her life as she once did and is unable to walk independently due to her vision loss. She wants the hospital to provide the best possible treatment and compensate her for losing her dream job. Saimai Survive told Channel 7 that they would be contacting the hospital to discuss the treatment plan and reporting the issue to the Ministry of Public Health, seeking punishment for the medical team if their diagnosis was indeed incorrect. Thailand unveils trillion-baht infrastructure boom File photo for reference only The Government of Thailand is poised to unveil a series of ambitious infrastructure projects, seeking to attract over 1.5 trillion baht in private investment. 12. The Government of Thailand is poised to unveil a series of ambitious infrastructure projects, seeking to attract over 1.5 trillion baht in private investment. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra is said to outline these initiatives in her policy statement to Parliament on September 12 to 13, focusing on economic stimulation and critical infrastructure enhancements. One of the flagship projects is the “Pearl Necklace,” a major flood protection initiative designed to safeguard Bangkok and its surrounding regions from the escalating threat of flooding due to global sea level rise. Plodprasop Suraswadi, former Deputy Prime Minister and chairman of Pheu Thai’s Environmental Policy Committee emphasised the urgency of the project, noting that rising sea levels from melting polar ice caps could inundate significant parts of Thailand, including Bangkok and neighbouring provinces. The project proposes the construction of nine artificial islands along a 100-kilometre coastal stretch. These islands, each covering 50 square kilometres and situated 1 kilometre offshore, will feature protective seawalls with adjustable gates. The first island will be located at Bang Khun Thian, with the remaining extending up to Chon Buri. Investment for this monumental project will be primarily driven by the private sector, with developers granted a 99-year concession. Plodprasop predicts the construction will span over 20 years, marking it as Thailand’s largest infrastructure investment to date. Another key initiative is the Land Bridge project, spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit. This project involves developing deep seaports on both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coasts to improve goods transportation and travel efficiency. Planned for 2030 The Request for Proposal (RFP) for the project is anticipated to be completed by early 2026, with investor selection and a Royal Decree for land expropriation expected in the second quarter of that year. The first phase of construction is slated to begin in the third quarter, with operations projected to commence by the end of 2030. The total investment for this project is estimated at 1 trillion baht. Investment opportunities will include a single contract covering management of both Chumphon and Ranong deep seaports, motorways, and railways, with options for joint ventures if companies prefer to focus on specific segments. In addition, the government is advancing plans for a large-scale entertainment complex, inspired by Singapore’s model. The project will feature casinos occupying no more than 10% of the total area, with the remainder dedicated to concert halls, luxury hotels, and shopping malls. The Finance Ministry estimates the investment requirement will range between 300 and 500 billion baht. At least three locations in Bangkok will each require investments of no less than 100 billion baht, while four tourist provinces outside the capital will see investments of approximately 50 billion baht per site, reported The Nation. These projects mark a significant push towards enhancing Thailand’s infrastructure and economic landscape, with a strong emphasis on attracting substantial private sector investment. 13. Thailand Advocates Innovative Tax Strategy for Low-Income Earners File photo for reference only Finance Secondary Secretary Lavaron Sangsnit supports a bold negative income tax (NIT) scheme that provides financial support or welfare payments to workers whose earnings fall below a specified level. This initiative, popularly known as "workfare," is designed to encourage employment while providing essential monetary aid. 14. Finance Secondary Secretary Lavaron Sangsnit supports a bold negative income tax (NIT) scheme that provides financial support or welfare payments to workers whose earnings fall below a specified level. This initiative, popularly known as "workfare," is designed to encourage employment while providing essential monetary aid. Lavaron asserts that the NIT system encourages people to remain in their jobs by ensuring state welfare payments if their earnings don’t meet the minimum requirement. He says, for those earning less than the set minimum, the government will top up their wage to meet the threshold. For those out of work, the state might provide some help, but it won't be as substantial as the aid granted to those who have jobs, according to Lavaron. He made it clear that this concept is not about simple welfare but workfare, implying recipients need to work to get increased government benefits. Lavaron believes that introducing the NIT scheme could cut state welfare costs and remove overlapping in the current welfare system, which includes about 20 plans such as the state welfare card, costing up to 50 billion baht per year. To be eligible for workfare, individuals would have to submit their yearly personal income tax forms to the Revenue Department to confirm their income eligibility. As a person's income increases, the state would provide extra support in a stage known as "phase in." Once someone's earnings reach a certain mark, the state support rate becomes stable. If the income exceeds the minimum limit, the government stops its support. The NIT concept was first suggested by the Fiscal Policy Office ten years ago. Unlike classic welfare, where people might get state benefits without working, NIT requires participants to work and be part of the tax system. Lavaron pointed out that the government's spending on hard-to-reduce items has been constantly growing. In fiscal 2023, these expenses totalled 2.13 trillion baht, making up 67.2% of the government's budget, rising from 65.8% in fiscal 2022. This increase is the result of spending on debt repayment, commitments, and increasing welfare costs for public personnel and senior citizens. The proportion of spending on wages, contributions, and compensation for public workers dropped slightly from 26.2% of the budget in fiscal 2022 to 25.7% in 2023. 16. In a decisive move, Labour Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed that the nationwide minimum wage will be raised to 400 baht on October 1, amid growing concerns from businesses about potential economic impact. Following extensive discussions and a study by the Ministry of Labour, the decision aims to navigate Thailand’s slowing economy with a focus on analytical backing. Substantial compensatory measures have been outlined to support businesses, particularly those with over 200 employees, which represent a significant portion of the workforce. The Social Security Office (SSO) will extend a 1% discount on contributions to the Social Security Fund (SSF) until September next year to offset the financial burden. Smaller enterprises, typically with under 200 employees, are exempt from this wage increase. The ministry intends to lean on historical strategies, reflecting measures from 2012, to assist these SMEs until economic recovery strengthens. Adding to the conversation, Sanga Ruangwattanakul, President of the Khao San Road Business Association, expressed worries about potential negative effects such as employment slowdowns and rising costs, urging the government for tax relief and long-term employment solutions. As the new wage policy edges closer to implementation, its balanced execution remains crucial in mitigating business impact while supporting worker welfare. 17. Thailand Accelerates 145 Billion Baht Digital Wallet Payout File photo for reference only Thailand plans to fast-track the distribution of 145 billion baht from its "digital wallet" programme, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. Originally slated for the year's end, the initiative aims to provide immediate economic relief to vulnerable groups amid a sluggish economic recovery. 18. Thailand plans to fast-track the distribution of 145 billion baht from its "digital wallet" programme, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. Originally slated for the year's end, the initiative aims to provide immediate economic relief to vulnerable groups amid a sluggish economic recovery. Julapun's announcement came during a budget debate in the senate, where he emphasised the urgency of short-term economic stimulation. The government has allocated a total of 450 billion baht for this major handout scheme, intending to transfer 10,000 baht to 50 million Thais for spending in their local communities. The digital wallet project, a centrepiece of Thailand's economic strategy, is particularly crucial given the nation's recent political upheaval. Last month's unexpected removal of Srettha Thavisin as premier raised doubts about the timeline for such stimulus measures. His successor, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, has signalled a policy shift to include cash disbursements, reflecting a flexible approach to the country's immediate needs. So far, 32 million people have registered for the programme. However, the scheme's effectiveness faces challenges, as funds were initially meant to be distributed via smartphone applications, excluding some without access to such technology. It's still unclear whether the first batch of payments, expected later in September and sourced from the 2024 budget and alternative funds, will be delivered in cash. Economists, including former central bank governors, have criticised the handout as fiscally unsound. Nonetheless, the government defends the programme as essential for revitalising Thailand's economy, which saw only 2.3% growth in the second quarter and is expected to grow a mere 2.6% this year. Paetongtarn has reiterated her commitment to immediate economic stimulation, aligning with her predecessor's policy goals. Her new government issued a policy statement over the weekend, set for parliamentary presentation this week. As Thailand navigates its economic and political landscape, the swift implementation of the digital wallet scheme stands as a critical measure to bolster domestic activity and support its citizens. 20. Over 10 victims have recently lodged complaints with Thai authorities, accusing two individuals of orchestrating a sophisticated scam under the guise of a legitimate tour company. The company deceptively offered both overseas employment opportunities and travel packages, luring in unsuspecting clients via social media. One such victim shared her unfortunate experience, recounting how she paid over 60,000 baht for a tour to Japan. The company had established credibility through an active online presence and seemingly positive reviews. However, as the departure date approached, all lines of communication with the company went dead. Months later, she discovered the unsettling truth: her money had purportedly been used to purchase tours from another provider, only to encounter unspecified issues. The president of the Santi Prachatham Association provided further alarming insights, naming the two individuals as serial scammers. Their fraudulent activities allegedly span mushroom farm investments, employment opportunities in England, and these Japanese tours. In total, they have defrauded over 150 victims, accumulating a staggering 20 million baht. The victims are now rallying together, gathering evidence to aid the police in investigating charges of fraud and breaches in consumer protection laws. Authorities suspect that the scammers have fled the country, making their capture and the return of the defrauded funds an urgent cross-border matter.
