  1. Salmon, a favorite among many Thai people, may contain hidden parasites if not correctly handled and stored. This popular fish dish, rich in omega-3, high-quality protein, and vitamin B6, bears underlying risks when eaten raw. Eating raw or semi-cooked food increases the possibility of contracting germs, bacteria, or parasites that are not destroyed by heat during cooking. Regular consumption of such food can lead to gastrointestinal ailments such as diarrhea and food poisoning. Non-standard raw food might contain dormant parasites or larvae. Consuming uncooked food can expose individuals to parasites. If close to the nervous system, these parasites can cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, and even epilepsy-like symptoms. Sashimi, a dish typically made from marine animals and various seafood, is a common source of parasites in salmon. When eaten raw, salmon can harbor different parasites such as roundworms, tapeworms, liver leafworms, and more. These parasites can come from the environment or contamination during the cutting process. According to the SSS, tapeworms are more common in pork or beef sold in Thailand compared to salmon. Consequently, when opting for raw salmon such as sushi and sashimi, it's advisable to purchase from reliable sources as improper handling increases risk. The Department of Fisheries suggests that sashimi must be frozen at -35 degrees Celsius for 15 hours or -20 degrees Celsius for 7 days before consumption to kill parasites. If you feel something moving in your mouth while eating salmon, stop eating it immediately. Vulnerable groups like pregnant women, children, and the elderly should refrain from consuming raw fish since infection from salmon parasites can lead to severe symptoms. 3. Thai politics in Cabinet fever as PM race heats up, 7 candidates Following the removal of former Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, several media outlets are closely watching the selection of the next PM and the formation of the new Cabinet with seven potential candidates from five coalition government parties. According to Section 159 of the Constitution, the appointment of the PM of Thailand involves five conditions: The House of Representatives must appoint the PM by selecting a candidate who meets the qualifications outlined in Section 160. The candidate for PM must be nominated by a political party from the list specified in Section 88. The nominating political party must hold at least five per cent of the total seats in the House of Representatives. The nomination must be endorsed by at least one-tenth of the total members of the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives must approve the PM’s appointment through open voting, with more than half of the total members in favour. The list of prime ministerial candidates from political parties with members elected to the House of Representatives, representing at least 5% of the total membership (or 25 members), includes seven names from five coalition government parties: Paetongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the Pheu Thai Party. Chaikasem Nitisiri, former advisor to the ex-PM Srettha. Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party. Prawit Wongsuwon, leader of the Palang Pracharath Party. Prayut Chan-o-cha, former PM and leader of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party. Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, former Deputy PM, Minister of Energy, and current leader of Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party. Jurin Laksanawisit, former leader of the Democrat Party. Paetongtarn emerged as a strong candidate for PM due to her significant role in the Pheu Thai Party after being selected as party leader in October of the previous year, ahead of the recent General Election. Many expect her to follow in the footsteps of her father, former PM Thaksin Shinawatra. Another potential candidate from the Pheu Thai Party is 75 year old Chaikasem, who was previously proposed as a PM candidate twice, in 2019 and 2023. Chaikasem began his political career relatively late, having spent most of his life in the legal field as the former Attorney General of Thailand. Under Paetongtarn’s leadership in the Pheu Thai Party, Chaikasem became a candidate for PM alongside Paetongtarn and Srettha. After Srettha secured the PM position, Chaikasem became an advisor to the PM. He was listed as a party-list Member of Parliament but later resigned on 9 October. As the coalition government party with the second most MP seats, the leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, Anutin, is another strong candidate. The 57 year old politician is known for his business role in construction and engineering companies and his significant political role in the Covid-19 response and the legalisation of cannabis for medical use. The leading candidate from the Palang Pracharath Party is its leader, Prawit Wongsuwan, who briefly served as PM in 2022. The 79 year old retired Thai general served as Deputy PM between 2014 and 2023 under both military and civilian governments and was a key figure in the 2014 coup. The 29th PM of Thailand, who was in position after the 2014 coup, Prayut Chan-o-cha, also appears on the list of potential candidates. Prayut previously led the National Council for Peace and Order before winning a general election in 2019. Another candidate from the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party is the party leader, former Deputy PM and Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga. Pirapan began his professional career in the legal field as an assistant judge and later began his political career in 1996 as an MP representing the Huay Kwang district of Bangkok. The former leader of the Democrat Party, Jurin Laksanawisit, is the latest candidate on the list. The 68 year old leading member of the Democrat Party began his career as an MP in 1996. Jurin served as Minister of Public Health between 2008 and 2011, then became Deputy PM and Minister of Commerce under the leadership of former PM Prayut. As of now, the schedule for the selection of the 31st Prime Minister of Thailand has not yet been finalised. The Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, Aphat Sukhanan, revealed in an interview with Matichon that the President of the National Assembly of Thailand would later call the leaders of the government and opposition parties to a meeting before finalising the schedule. 5. The Thai Expressway Authority (EXAT) has declared a brief closure of inbound lanes on Rama II Road by the Big C Kheha Thonburi bus stop from August 16 to 31. This closure will happen each day from 10 pm to 5 am. On August 14, it was confirmed that the Ministry of Transport has commissioned UN-CC joint venture, including Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited and Civil Construction Services and Products Company Limited, to handle the construction of Rama III – Dao Khanong – Western Bangkok Outer Ring Road Expressway's first contract. This project involves creating underground duct banks and conduits which necessitate the closure and rerouting of traffic on the inbound lanes of Rama II Road towards Dao Khanong, from 8+330 km marker (near Big C Kheha Thonburi bus stop) to 8+170 km marker (prior to Rama II Soi 60/1). This closure will be enacted from August 16 to 31, each day from 10 pm to 5 am. Traffic signs near the construction zone are set in place by EXAT. There are also traffic lights and flashing warning signs to alert drivers. EXAT extends an apology for potential inconvenience and calls for cooperation from road users in the area. Drivers must heed warning signs, traffic lights, and rigidly observe traffic rules for everyone's safety. For complaints, incidents, or helpful suggestions, they can call the hotline at 084-356-6129. EXAT also underscores the importance of public awareness and safety throughout this period. They have made efforts to ensure the widespread dissemination of closure details and traffic diversions. This includes clear signage and sufficient warning to limit disturbances to everyday commuters. This construction work is part of a larger project to enhance Bangkok’s infrastructure in order to reduce traffic and better the transport network. The ongoing Rama III – Dao Khanong – Western Bangkok Outer Ring Road Expressway initiative is an integral part of this upgrade, expected to yield long-term benefits. EXAT is focused on improving the city's infrastructure for smoother and safer journeys in the future, even if it might cause temporary inconvenience. They advise motorists and commuters to plan their trips, taking into account the temporary road closures and diversions. If all road users adhere to guidelines and maintain awareness, a smoother transition and minimal disruption are anticipated during the construction period. 7. Two judges were disciplined for failing to adhere to judicial regulations and behaving in a manner that tarnished the dignity of their office. The Supreme Court meeting held yesterday, August 13, chaired by Anucha Chiwitsophon, addressed these issues. The Judicial Commission of the Supreme Court (JC) approved the transfer and appointment of senior judges, including eight positions at level four and three additional positions for senior judges. The JC also reviewed the investigation reports concerning the conduct of judges. The first case involved a judge who, during a plaintiff’s witness examination, suggested dismissing the case and encouraging a settlement between the parties. This judge further advised the plaintiff to withdraw the case and request a refund of court fees. Such actions were deemed inconsistent with judicial protocols and ethics as stipulated by the JC. According to the Judicial Service Act of 2000, Sections 55 and 62, and the Judicial Code of Ethics, this behaviour constituted a minor disciplinary violation. The JC decided to impose a warning as a penalty. Another judge was investigated for unprofessional conduct, including ignoring advice to correct judgment drafts, disrespecting and threatening supervisors, and creating discord among colleagues. The judge’s actions were also found to be in violation of judicial protocols and ethics. The JC determined that the conduct breached the Judicial Service Act of 2000, Sections 61 and 62, and the Judicial Code of Ethics, leading to a decision to impose a warning. The meeting underscored the importance of maintaining the highest standards of conduct and professionalism within the judiciary, reported KhaoSod. 9. Chiang Rai was hit by its third large flood of the year when the Mae Sai River spilled over, resulting in major damage to nearby communities and the Sa Lom Joy market. Storeowners rushed to move their stock to safer locations. In the early hours of the morning on August 14, the Mae Sai River overflowed into the nearby community in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province. The Sa Lom Joy market, a major trading center in this region, took a critical hit. This is the third time this year that this area has been flooded. Excess water from under the bridge flooded the entrance of the market, spilling onto the streets and impacting businesses throughout the area. Many store owners, who had faced several floods in the past, were able to move their goods to safer places before it was too late. Following the flood, local authorities from the Mae Sai district, the Mae Sai municipality, and other concerned organizations quickly put sandbags in strategic places to contain the flooding. As a result, the flood mainly affected areas along the riverbank, while key places like the border checkpoint, Phahonyothin Road, and most of the region were not impacted by the flood. On the other hand, the nearby area of Tachileik in Myanmar suffered more serious damage. Particularly, the Tha Lo market, which is in a lower-lying area, saw extensive damage as the floodwater rushed from the bridge into the market. 10. Lampang's Ceramic Industry Struggles Over Low-Priced Chinese Ceramic Goods File photo for reference only The ceramic industry in Lampang faces a major downturn due to the saturation of cheaper Chinese ceramics in the market, forcing several local factories to close. 11. The ceramic industry in Lampang faces a major downturn due to the saturation of cheaper Chinese ceramics in the market, forcing several local factories to close. The situation has progressively worsened, with various firms struggling to remain competitive. Preecha Srimala, Head of Lampang Pottery Association, disclosed that local ceramic businesses are facing unparalleled difficulties on August 13. Despite surviving the Covid-19 crisis, high labor, transportation, and material costs have compounded their troubles. The introduction of extremely cheap Chinese ceramics has thrown them further off balance. These products, available online for as little as 5 baht per piece, are subjecting the local market to severe competition, resulting in many factory shutdowns, according to Preecha. "Prior the pandemic, about 328 ceramic factories existed. However, by the end of last year's survey, there were only 89 still operational. Many are either closed permanently or temporarily, waiting for economic improvement. We are now relying on government intervention to bolster the economy," Srimala said. He appealed to the government for immediate measures to safeguard the local pottery industry, which is part of Lampang's historical heritage and highly dependent on superior quality kaolin clay found in Ban Pang Ka, Jaehom District. Srimala warned that the distinctive pottery industry would be doomed without such action. Srimala added, "We are inundated by imported goods, particularly Chinese products, that flood our Thai market. Our rooster-branded bowls are a distinctive product of Lampang, made from local clay and adorned with unique rooster, banana tree, and peony designs. The production cost of these items is about 20 baht per piece. However, the influx of Chinese goods sold online at 5 baht each, inclusive of delivery, is adversely affecting not just the ceramics industry but other local craft industries. The government must act swiftly to avert a domino effect of economic downturn.” The iconic rooster-branded bowls of Lampang, can trace their origins to the 1950s when Chinese immigrants found high-quality clay suitable for ceramics in the region. From then on, by the 1960s, Lampang morphed into a major hub for the production of these bowls. The industry, however, faced initial challenges due to uneven product quality and resource scarcity, which limited sales to local markets. In 1973, the Lampang Pottery Club was formed to ensure price uniformity among producers. Later, the club introduced new technologies, improved product quality, cut costs, and reduced environmental damage, helping Lampang Ceramics extend its reach to global markets. In 1989, the Lampang Pottery Association was launched aiming to work with the government to endorse the ceramic industry. Each year, in conjunction with the province, the association hosts the Lampang Ceramic Fair from December 1 to 10. This annual event attracts both national and international tourists, offering a significant boost to the Lampang economy with their unique ceramic pieces. The present crisis puts this long-established industry in jeopardy, and local manufacturers are urgently calling for government intervention to protect their livelihoods and preserve Lampang's cultural treasure. 13. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Dismissed Over Major Political Ethics Breach Thailand's Constitutional Court has ousted Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin from his role, concluding that he grossly breached political ethics by appointing a former criminal to a ministerial position. Srettha had appointed Pichit Chuenban, a well-known lawyer associated with the Shinawatra family, as the Minister of the Prime Minister's Office. The appointment was met with backlash, as 40 Senators argued that Pichit didn't meet the necessary criteria due to his past prison term. About a decade ago, Pichit was sentenced to six months in jail after attempting to bribe court administrative officers with 6 million baht in a case involving Thaksin Shinawatra and his wife. Because of this severe offence, Pichit was dismissed from the Royal Council of Thailand under Royal Patronage. Pichit chose to step down from his ministerial position on May 21 amid the controversy surrounding his appointment. In spite of Pichit's resignation, 40 senators lodged a complaint with the Constitutional Court, imploring the court to determine if the actions of the 62-year-old former Prime Minister Srettha violated the ethical norms expected of Thailand's politicians. Srettha, who is from Bangkok, was well aware of Pichit's shortcomings but went on with his appointment. The court consequently announced its verdict, stating that Srettha's actions represented a major breach of political ethics. As a result, Srettha has been stripped of his position as Prime Minister effective immediately. Following this event, the selection of a new Prime Minister and Cabinet is in order. Even though Srettha can no longer fulfil his duties, other members of the Cabinet may remain in their positions until replacements are appointed. The role of acting Prime Minister during this transition is likely to be filled by ex-Deputy PM Phumtham Wechayachai. In an interview given just before the court’s announcement, Srettha admitted that although he slept well he was worried about the impending decision by the court. Attention will now turn to those who may take over the top role. Stithorn Thananitichot, Director of the Office of Innovation for Democracy at King Prajadhipok’s Institute, has suggested the likes of Paetongtarn Shinawatra, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, as a potential successor. Other possible candidates could come from coalition parties, including leaders like Anutin Charnvirakul of the Bhumjaithai Party, or Prawit Wongsuwon of the Palang Pracharath Party. 15. A Bangkok condo owner shared his experience after discovering a rented room in a deplorable state, leading to renovation costs exceeding 100,000 baht. The tenant, a PR woman, left the room in such a condition that it appeared someone had died, with black water leaking and a foul smell permeating the space. Around 2pm yesterday, August 13, the 43 year old condo owner, Payungsak, described his shock to an online news outlet after the condo management informed him of the situation. Initially, he feared a crime had occurred due to the state of the room. Payungsak has been in the condominium rental business for a long time. The woman rented the condo in Sukhumvit 103 through a housekeeper, signing a one-year lease. Despite the lease ending, she hadn’t communicated whether she intended to renew it. The tenant occasionally paid rent, though payments became increasingly sporadic. Their interactions were limited to rent payment confirmations via LINE. On June 17, the condominium’s management contacted Payungsak, reporting water seeping from the rented room into the common areas, accompanied by a foul odour. Fearing the worst, he rushed to the condo, discovering water leaking from under the door. Upon entering, he was appalled by the room’s state and the overpowering stench. The room was littered with trash, clothes, and food scraps. Despite the mess, paths were cleared through the debris suggesting the tenant had been returning to the room. He found numerous high-value items, including branded goods and an iPhone 15 box, indicating recent use. The scene resembled a party aftermath, with evidence of drinking. Payungsak contacted the tenant immediately on June 17, asking her to remove her belongings and discuss the damages. She evaded the request, sneaking in five days later to collect some items and then ceased communication. A month later, in July, after partial renovations, Payungsak assessed the damage at 120,000 baht and informed the tenant. She only offered to pay 15,000 baht, claiming financial hardship due to unemployment, which contradicted her apparent lifestyle of using expensive branded items. Deciding not to wait for the tenant’s payment, Payungsak funded the repairs himself, fearing further damage if left unattended. The renovation, completed in over two months, finished on Monday, August 12, readying the room for new tenants. Payungsak, who had never encountered such an incident in his rental business, expressed his shock and concern for the condition of his other rental properties. Typically, he allows tenants their privacy without interference. He has consulted a lawyer to explore legal actions against the tenant, considering the extent of the damages and her refusal to pay. He shared his story on social media to raise awareness and as a plea for the tenant to take responsibility. Payungsak emphasized the importance of mutual respect between landlords and tenants, urging those renting to be considerate, as such situations cause significant distress and financial burden. The condo is now fully renovated and clean, with all issues resolved. Payungsak reassured potential tenants and neighbours that the room was safe and there was no crime involved. Disney fights Thai doctor’s death lawsuit, citing husband’s agreement Photo via Facebook/ Jeffrey Piccolo Multinational conglomerate Walt Disney dismissed a lawsuit filed by the husband of a Thai doctor who died after dining at a Disney restaurant in Florida, claiming that her husband agreed to settle any disputes with Disney outside of court when he signed up for the Disney+ streaming service. 17. Multinational conglomerate Walt Disney dismissed a lawsuit filed by the husband of a Thai doctor who died after dining at a Disney restaurant in Florida, claiming that her husband agreed to settle any disputes with Disney outside of court when he signed up for the Disney+ streaming service. The Thai doctor, 42 year old Kanokporn Tangsuan, died following a severe allergic reaction after eating at the Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant at Disney World in Florida with her husband, Jeffrey Piccolo, on October 5, 2023. On the day of the incident, Kanokporn and her husband ordered fried vegetarian dishes and emphasised to the staff that she could only consume allergen-free food, as she was allergic to dairy products and nuts. When each dish was served, the couple noticed that one of them did not include the allergen-free label like the others. They decided to ask the staff about the dish but the staff confirmed that it was safe for Kanokporn to eat. Immediately after consuming the dish, Kanokporn began to choke and collapsed to the ground. She used an epinephrine autoinjector but her condition did not improve. Her husband called 911 for emergency assistance. Unfortunately, Kanokporn died that night. The doctor later revealed that a large amount of dairy and nuts was found in her system. Disney slammed Kanokporn’s husband, Piccolo, decided to take legal action against Disney, accusing the company’s staff of recklessness and demanding US$50,000 in compensation. According to an update on the case reported by the New York Post, Disney is trying to have the lawsuit dismissed, citing an agreement on the Disney+ streaming platform that Piccolo had accepted during a one-month trial in 2019. Disney stated that Piccolo signed up for the streaming service in 2019 and agreed to the subscriber agreement, which stipulated that any dispute, except small claims, he had with the company would be resolved through individual binding arbitration. The company added that Piccolo had also agreed to a similar agreement when he purchased tickets to the Epcot theme park in September last year. Piccolo’s lawyers criticised Disney’s argument as fundamentally flawed and urged the court not to enforce the unfair agreement. “The notion that terms agreed to by a consumer when creating a Disney+ free trial account would forever bar that consumer’s right to a jury trial in any dispute with any Disney affiliate or subsidiary is so outrageously unreasonable and unfair as to shock the judicial conscience, and this court should not enforce such an agreement.” The case continues, and the death of Kanokporn has drawn the attention of many who believe that restaurant staff should have proper knowledge of food allergies to ensure customer safety. 21. A municipal employee, heavily intoxicated, ran a red light and caused a severe accident involving the district chief’s car, which was carrying his family for a Mother’s Day outing. The incident resulted in significant injuries and property damage. Today, August 14, reports emerged detailing a serious accident that occurred when a drunk driver in a white pickup truck ran a red light at the intersection near the Phen District Office in Udon Thani. The crash, which happened on August 11, left several individuals injured. The white pickup truck, driven by a municipal employee, collided with a black four-door pickup truck driven by a district chief. The black truck was carrying the district chief’s family, who were on their way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Following the collision, the white truck crashed through the district office’s wall, causing extensive damage to both the vehicle and the wall. The driver of the white truck survived the crash but the passengers in the black truck sustained serious injuries, with some in critical condition. Reporters visited the crash site and found remnants of the vehicles and the damaged wall still scattered around. Additionally, there were flowers, incense, candles, and 1-baht coins at the site, likely left by relatives performing a ritual to summon the spirits of the accident victims. Investigations revealed that the white pickup truck was responsible for the accident, having ignored traffic signals and collided with the black truck. CCTV footage from the Phen subdistrict municipality confirmed that the driver of the white truck was a municipal employee. The driver, identified as Ampai, a general employee at the Phen subdistrict municipality, had reportedly been drinking alcohol at a funeral before the incident. Drink driving Witnesses reported that Ampai’s white truck smashed into the black pickup truck carrying Thanapiboon, the district chief of Sang Khom, Udon Thani, along with his wife Wallapa, the deputy mayor and council president of Phen subdistrict municipality, and their children, Pichaya and Kamonpit. All four occupants of the black truck were injured and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital. Ampai and his passenger, a young boy named Kritaya, are also hospitalised. The police are waiting for the injured parties to recover before proceeding with legal action and charges. Kallaya, head of the district office and Ampai’s superior, stated that the accident occurred on August 11 at 1.48pm. She confirmed that Ampai had been drinking at a local funeral before driving and running the red light, causing the crash with Thanapiboon’s vehicle. The district chief’s family was on their way to Nong Khai for a Mother’s Day celebration when the incident occurred. Kallaya emphasised the seriousness of the situation, noting that Vallapa remains in critical condition. An internal disciplinary inquiry is also underway for Ampai, who remains hospitalised with minor injuries, including head trauma, reported KhaoSod. “Let this serve as a warning: do not drive under the influence of alcohol. Such actions lead to devastating consequences, affecting innocent individuals and causing significant property damage.” By Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-14 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 22. Thai Rice Industry Threatened as Vietnamese Strain Raises the Bar File photo for reference only Local Thai rice types could vanish from the market as farmers prefer a foreign Vietnamese variety recognized for its softness. This warning comes from Charoen Laothamatas, the Head of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, who fears for the future of traditional Thai strains. 23. Local Thai rice types could vanish from the market as farmers prefer a foreign Vietnamese variety recognized for its softness. This warning comes from Charoen Laothamatas, the Head of the Thai Rice Exporters Association, who fears for the future of traditional Thai strains. He reports that popular local versions like Pathum Thani fragrant rice and KB 79 have seen a decrease in production, being edged out by Vietnamese Khao Hom Phuang, also known as jasmine 85. Charoen noted that "80% of the packaged rice sold in Thailand is the Vietnamese Khao Hom Phuang. This has caused the Pathum Thani fragrant rice to nearly vanish from the market because the Vietnamese variety provides a larger yield of 1,200-1,500 kg per rai, grows fast, and can be grown throughout the year". In contrast, Pathum Thani fragrant rice produces 800-900 kg per rai, takes four months to harvest, and can only be grown once a year. Surprisingly, farmers are projected to decrease the cultivation of hom mali rice in favor of white rice, as it offers a higher yield and can be grown twice a year. "Thailand doesn't have enough rice types that can meet the needs of farmers and match the taste of consumers. Farmers are therefore opting for foreign options, notably Vietnamese and Chinese varieties," pointed out Charoen, implying that those countries have strong government support for rice development. Charoen is urging the Rice Department to speed up its research to breed new rice types that have higher yields per rai to cut production costs. He is also advocating for the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to adjust its regulations, allowing farmers to grow foreign rice alongside local strains. Charoen insisted the government must prioritize developing the Thai rice industry to match what the market demands. He noted that Vietnam is successfully transitioning towards producing high-quality, competitively priced rice for export, adding value compared to Thai hom mali rice. The US Department of Agriculture predicted that India will continue to be the top rice exporter in 2025, followed by Vietnam and Thailand. Charoen warned that Thailand could lose its spot among leading rice exporting countries if they don't take action. As it stands, Thailand is losing its parboiled rice export market to India. It mainly exports white rice, which remains popular in Iraq, Indonesia, and some African nations. Firecrackers At the time of the incident, Auyphon was riding his motorcycle home. Neighbours heard two gunshots but dismissed the noise, thinking children were playing with firecrackers, as it was a common occurrence in the area. It was only when a teenager riding by noticed Auyphon lying next to his motorcycle that the gravity of the situation became apparent. A neighbour who wished to remain anonymous said he thought it was just kids playing with firecrackers again. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.
