A famous retired boxer was arrested by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) for promoting online gambling sites. Thawon (last name withheld), was apprehended yesterday, August 8, and confessed to getting 2,500 baht for each promotional post. Working alongside the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD), the CIB took action against Thawon, who jointly announced, advertised, or enticed others to gamble online without authorization. Thawon's Facebook page, which has over 330,000 followers, was found to have posts featuring boxing match schedules and links to online gambling sites. This move was perceived as encouraging the public to participate in illegal gambling. Preliminary inquiries showed that Thawon owned the Facebook page and that he was paid 2,500 baht for each post by the owners of the online gambling sites. During questioning by TCSD officers, Thawon acknowledged his involvement in the operation. He stated, “I'm the owner of the Facebook page in question, and the online gambling site owners paid me to place ads on my page. They compensated me with 2,500 baht per post.” After Thawon's admission, TCSD officers will collect more evidence to file charges and commence legal proceedings against him and the owners of the online gambling sites. This arrest comes as part of a broader effort by the CCIB to curb the growing trend of illegal online gambling activities. The negative societal impact of these activities, particularly on impressionable young people, is a prime concern. CCIB officers will continue to keep an eye on social media platforms for evidence of illegal activities. Strict punishments await individuals found guilty under law. The public is strongly advised against participating in or promoting online gambling to avoid legal consequences and to help maintain a safe online space. Thailand anticipates 9.39 billion baht from Mother's Day tourism File photo for reference only The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) anticipates revenue from domestic travel to reach 9.39 billion baht during the Mother's Day holiday this year. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) anticipates revenue from domestic travel to reach 9.39 billion baht during the Mother's Day holiday this year. The expected income from an estimated 2.6 million trips is slightly below the 9.58 billion baht generated during the two consecutive extended holidays in July. TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool attributes the lower forecast for the Mother's Day weekend to several factors. These include high household debts, the living costs that have made people careful about leisure spending, and some travelers who have already spent their travel budgets in the previous month. Individuals with high purchasing power might choose to travel abroad to celebrate with their mothers rather than staying within Thailand, added Thapanee. She said, "Some tourists, with attractive tour packages from neighboring countries at an affordable rate of only 10,000 baht, have decided to treat their mothers with an international trip." Countries likely to benefit from these foreign trips include Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and China as they provide visa exemptions for Thai travelers. The long weekend sees a predicted average hotel occupancy rate of 68% nationwide, with the central region and Bangkok expected to record the highest occupancy rates at 73% and 72%, respectively. The central region is also likely to see the maximum visitors with approximately 672,740 trips, followed by the northeast with 485,690 and the eastern region with 463,640 trips. In terms of revenue generation, Bangkok leads the pack with a forecast of 2.32 billion baht, trailed by the eastern region with 1.98 billion and the south with 1.5 billion baht. Thapanee also mentioned that the predictions fall in line with the Tourism Council of Thailand’s estimates which predicted about 30% of local travelers staying within their provinces, while only 14% will undertake short trips in other provinces. The TAT is hosting various events outside Bangkok in a bid to attract more tourists. These events include the Amazing Food Festival 2024 in Prachuap Khiri Khan and the Amazing Beach Life Festival in Songkhla. The purpose of these events is to stimulate tourism in lesser-visited areas, provide unique experiences, and boost the local economies. Former Members of the Dissolved MFP Form New Political Group: The People's Party File photo for reference only A new political group called "The People's Party" was launched today by members of the now-disbanded Move Forward Party (MFP). A new political group called "The People's Party" was launched today by members of the now-disbanded Move Forward Party (MFP). The new party leader is Natthaphong “Teng” Ruengpanyawut, who was the Deputy Secretary-General for the MFP. The MFP was disbanded by the Constitutional Court on August 7 due to claims that the party threatened the monarchy and democracy in its promotion to change Section 112 of the Criminal Code, also known as the lèse-majesté law. After the disbanding, 11 key figures, including former party leader Pita Limjaroenrat and the former Secretary-General Chaithawat Tulathon, were prohibited from forming a new political party, joining any party leadership, or becoming part of a founding team. Nevertheless, the prohibited members, mainly Pita and Chaithawat, remain committed to helping the new political party, which is set to include the remaining 143 MFP members. Today, August 9, the former MFP members held a press conference at the Thai Summit building to officially announce the name of their new party. The term "People's Party" is not new to Thai politics. It was previously used during the 1988 General Election under the leadership of Chaloemphan Siwikrom, who once worked for the Democrat Party. The People's Party secured 19 seats in Parliament before its leader announced its dissolution in 1989 to merge with the Ruam Thai Party. New party leader Natthaphong, 37, was chosen due to his coordinating skills and good nature. The executive management team members of the party include: Sarayut Jailak – Secretary-General Chutima Kotchaphan – Treasurer Nattawut Buaprathum – Member Register Phicharn Chaowapatanawong – Executive Committee Member It was expected that Sirikunya Tansakun, the ex Deputy Leader of the MFP, would become the new party leader, but she clarified she had no intention of doing so. Natthaphong described the new party’s mission, which is to empower all Thai citizens. The logo, an orange inverted pyramid combined with three hexagons, symbolises the ideals of the Khana Ratsadon: The supreme power belongs to the majority of Thai people, and encompasses the values of freedom, equality and fraternity. The target release date for the new party is 2027, and their primary goal is to win the election and create a one-party government. To achieve this, Natthaphong has a lot of work to do, including reorganising the party, finding additional financial backers, and developing appealing campaigns. The People’s Party will start accepting new members at the Stadium One building near National Stadium BTS Station on August 10. Yala witnessed a tragic incident when two teenagers on a motorcycle shot at another group of youths, resulting in one fatality and one severe injury. The police have been struggling to control frequent gang-related violence in the area. Yala City Police Station yesterday, August 8, received a report of a shooting at the entrance of Banogo Tuen Ngor Alley in Moo 1, Sateng Nok subdistrict, Mueang Yala district. Two individuals were injured in the incident. Upon receiving the report, Police Lieutenant Awirut Siripong and a team of officers immediately went to the scene. At the location, police officers from the Kamphong Nibong Municipality cordoned off the area. Bloodstains were found on the ground, and a red Scoopy-i motorcycle belonging to the injured was on the road. The injured individuals were identified as 16 year old Fa-is Dole, from Moo 4, Budi Subdistrict, and 17 year old Asmi Kahlong. Rescue workers from the Mae Kor Niao Yala Foundation had already transported them to Yala Central Hospital. Fa-is Dole succumbed to his injuries later. Investigations revealed that Fa-is (the deceased), owner of the motorcycle, was riding with Asmi and 17 year old Anaph Benma, who was driving. Fa-is was seated in the middle while Asmi was at the back. Two assailants on another motorcycle approached them and fired a handgun, hitting Fa-is fatally and severely injuring Asmi. Anaph, the driver, escaped unscathed but was in shock. Gang dispute Officers have taken Anaph for questioning at the Yala City Police Station. Initial findings suggest that the shooting stemmed from a dispute between local youth gangs. The police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact cause and apprehend the culprits responsible for the death and injury. Reports indicate that the police in the Mueang Yala district have been unable to control the recurrent violence caused by various youth gangs. These groups often engage in fights and retaliatory attacks, leading to multiple injuries and fatalities. Despite numerous incidents, law enforcement has struggled to arrest the perpetrators or prevent these violent acts. Additionally, the police have not provided clear updates or held press conferences to inform the public and the victims’ families about the progress of the cases, reported KhaoSod. The ongoing gang-related violence in Yala continues to be a significant concern for residents and officials alike. The community is calling for more effective measures to ensure safety and bring justice to those affected by these tragic events. A shocking car crash occurred in Ratchaburi when two young women swerved to avoid a dog, causing their vehicle to crash into a tree and burst into flames. The incident, today, August 9, left the car destroyed. At 3am, Pak Tho Police Station in Ratchaburi received a report about a car fire on Phetkasem Road, heading southward in Moo 5, Pa Kai Sub-district, Pak Tho District, Ratchaburi province. The police, including the local fire brigade and rescue teams, were promptly informed and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a Honda Civic, the colour and registration of which remain unknown, engulfed in flames after colliding with a tree on the left side of the road. The car had flipped over with its wheels facing upwards. Nearby, two injured women were discovered and identified as 20 year old Wasana, the driver, and 19 year old Yosita, the passenger. The rescue team provided first aid and transported both women to Pak Tho Hospital. According to initial statements from two Good Samaritans, they had been driving home from Ratchaburi Market when the incident occurred. The witnesses, who were driving at approximately 80 kilometres per hour (km/h) in the right lane, noticed the Honda Civic overtaking them on the right before swerving into the left lane. They assumed the car was turning into an alley. As they approached the accident scene, they saw the Honda Civic lose control and crash into the tree, with sparks beginning to ignite a fire. The witnesses quickly stopped to help, managing to pull the driver and passenger from the wreckage. They confirmed that only two people were in the car, and the injured women corroborated this, explaining that they had swerved to avoid a dog, leading to the loss of control. The fire soon engulfed the entire vehicle, reducing it to a mere shell. Fortunately, there was no damage to nearby houses or public property. Police have since contacted the relatives of the injured women to proceed with further actions. A witness recounted the accident. “We were driving back from the market when the road was clear. Suddenly, the Honda Civic sped past us and swerved into the left lane. Moments later, we saw it crash into a tree and catch fire. “We managed to pull the two women out just in time. They told us they were trying to avoid a dog, which caused the accident.” Police continue to investigate the accident, ensuring that all details are accurately recorded and the scene is thoroughly examined. The prompt response and bravery of the Good Samaritans likely prevented a more tragic outcome, highlighting the importance of quick thinking and community support in emergencies. The family of a Thai woman electrocuted to death in a Phuket hotel is seeking justice after they accused the hotel and police of attempting to cover up the cause of her death to avoid taking responsibility. The 26 year old woman, Kanokwan “Nam” Intachak, worked as an assistant chef at a well-known hotel in Phuket and died while working on April 21. A witness revealed that Nam screamed, fell onto her back, struck her head on a table, and lost consciousness. Her family suspected that Nam was electrocuted as there were several electrical devices in the area where she was working. Thalang Police Station investigated the scene and did not find any traces of physical assault or electrocution. They transferred Nam’s body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy. The police then reported on April 22 that Nam had died from a congenital condition, atherosclerosis. The hotel offered Nam’s family 68,000 baht, and her colleagues contributed an additional 12,100 baht. However, her father, unconvinced by the police report, refused to accept the money. Amarin TV later reported that the hotel presented a counterfeit autopsy report to the family, and police officers were suspected of being involved in this action. According to media reports, the family only received the official autopsy result from the hospital at the end of last month, which clearly showed that Nam died by electrocution. Nam’s father and other family members decided to take Nam’s body in a coffin from their home province of Nakhon Si Thammarat to the hotel in Phuket. They insisted on remaining outside the hotel until the management team took appropriate responsibility and compensated the family for their loss. House to select new deputy speaker after Padipat loses MP status Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post official website The House of Representatives is set to select a new first deputy House speaker next Wednesday following Padipat Suntiphada’s loss of MP status, a result of the constitutional court’s dissolution of the Move Forward Party (MFP), according to chief government whip Wisut Chainaroon. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335099-house-to-select-new-deputy-speaker-after-padipat-loses-mp-status/ -
The House of Representatives is set to select a new first deputy House speaker next Wednesday following Padipat Suntiphada’s loss of MP status, a result of the constitutional court’s dissolution of the Move Forward Party (MFP), according to chief government whip Wisut Chainaroon. A Pheu Thai Party MP, Wisut, emphasised that the position must be filled by a member of a government party, with coalition partners scheduled to discuss the matter. The coalition’s second-largest party led by Pheu Thai, Bhumjaithai has openly expressed its interest in securing the position for one of its members. However, Wisut noted that several factors need to be considered. “Let’s wait. We’ll get the first deputy House speaker next week for sure. The selected individual must be politically neutral, well-versed in House regulations, and capable of maintaining order during meetings.” Wisut acknowledged that several candidates are being considered, with Paradorn Prissanananthakul, a Bhumjaithai MP for Ang Thong, being a notable contender due to his qualifications. Critics argue that the check-and-balance system could be compromised if the House speaker and both deputies come from the government bloc. Wisut responded by saying these positions have nothing to do with scrutiny work. It’s the job of the MPs and the opposition must measure up to it. Deputy position A Bhumjaithai source suggested that the first deputy post should go to their party unless Pheu Thai decides otherwise. In such a case, second deputy Pichet Chuamuangphan, a Pheu Thai MP, should move up to the first deputy position, allowing a Bhumjaithai MP to take the second deputy slot. A former Prachachat Party leader, House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha, was chosen to resolve an impasse between the Pheu Thai Party and MFP, now the People’s Party, during their earlier, unsuccessful attempts to form a coalition post-elections last year. The MFP eventually joined the opposition. Initially, the MFP nominated Padipat, an MP for Phitsanulok, for the speaker’s role, but he became the first deputy under a coalition agreement. Complications arose when the MFP assumed the role of the lead opposition party, which prohibits its members from holding positions as House speaker or deputy. To navigate this, Padipat arranged to be expelled from the MFP and subsequently joined the Fair Party, allowing him to retain his deputy speaker role. Despite no longer being an MFP MP, Padipat’s tenure as a party executive fell within the period affected by the constitutional court’s recent ruling. This ruling dissolved the MFP and banned 11 executives from political activity for 10 years. A by-election is anticipated soon to fill Padipat’s vacant seat in Phitsanulok, reported Bangkok Post. In Bangkok, a Thai couple has sought assistance from a news agency after failing to get the local police to identify two unknown persons who vandalized their home. The perpetrators were reported to have hurled bags containing pork blood and pickled fish at their residence located at Soi Phetchaburi 31 in the Ratchathewi district. The incident, which happened on August 5, was followed up by a team from Channel 3 on August 8. The victims live in a five-story building, with the ground floor functioning as a shop for selling 'Kanom Krok', also known as coconut pancakes, next door to Pratunam Market. The 65-year-old female victim, named Bualip, reported that she heard banging noises at their front door around 2.30am while they were asleep on the second floor. Initially, her husband thought it was due to an explosion in an outside electric transformer. However, upon investigating, they found blood stains on their door and nearby floor, accompanied by a foul odor. They speculated the blood was possibly mixed with pickled fish. To help figure out what occurred, they asked their daughter from Pathum Thani province to scrutinize their home's security footage. The footage revealed two individuals arrived at their home on a motorcycle, one person remained on the vehicle while the other threw two bags of what is believed to be blood at their house. Unable to identify the suspects who had motorcycle helmets on and used a motorcycle without a registration plate, the couple filed a complaint with the Phayathai Police Station. Additional footage obtained from neighbors and local businesses was also provided. Although the police promised a visit, the couple claims they never showed up. Bualip expressed her bewilderment on the motivation behind the suspects’ actions. She maintained that she and her husband have lived peacefully in the building for over 30 years without quarrelling with anyone, as managing their shop consumes most of their time. In response to Channel 3’s follow-up, the Phayathai Police Station confirmed they are actively investigating the incident. There was a raid on three herbal shops in Pattaya yesterday. The police uncovered illegal employment, false health claims, and deceit upon investigation. The Pattaya Indian Community Association reported these shops. They stated that the shops were exploiting customers by selling overly priced and ineffective herbal remedies. The businesses were compelling foreigners to purchase these expensive items. In response to these allegations, the Consumer Protection Department at the Chon Buri Provincial Public Health Office, the Bang Lamung District Health Office, and the Pattaya Tourist Police coordinated a surveillance operation on the said shops. Upon confirmation of the illegal activities, officials took action. Officials found an array of products such as cosmetics, shampoo, soap, herbal indigestion remedies, hair oil, lotions, and skin oils. These products claimed to have exaggerated effectiveness. Some of these items were even unregistered, violating Section 17 of the Herbal Products Act. All these items were seized for evidence. Five people were apprehended in this operation. Four were accused of encouraging foreigners to buy the doubtful products, while one foreigner was working without a permit. Pattaya Tourist Police Superintendent, Police Lieutenant Colonel Piyapong Ensarn, verified that the evidence and suspects were handed over to the investigators at Pattaya City Police Station. The charges include the production, sale, or import of medicines without approval under the Drug Act and sale of unregistered herbal products under the Herbal Products Act. Rampaging buffalo charges through Chon Buri beach - video Photo courtesy of TikTok @iixop video screenshot A peaceful day at Nang Ram Beach in Chon Buri province turned into a nightmare when an escaped buffalo went on a wild rampage, charging at unsuspecting tourists and sparking widespread panic. A peaceful day at Nang Ram Beach in Chon Buri province turned into a nightmare when an escaped buffalo went on a wild rampage, charging at unsuspecting tourists and sparking widespread panic. The young, powerful bovine was spotted tearing across the sandy shores, causing chaos as it headed straight for a family enjoying a leisurely picnic. Eyewitnesses described the shocking moment when the buffalo “powered towards the family,” leaving everyone scrambling for safety. “He was like a runaway train—unstoppable. We just grabbed our stuff and ran. I’ve never seen anything like it.” The situation, which could have ended in tragedy, took a fortunate turn when quick-thinking locals intervened, successfully capturing the distressed animal before it could cause any harm. The buffalo was then guided away from the crowded beach, bringing the tense ordeal to a close. Despite the dramatic scenes, miraculously, no one was injured during the buffalo’s unexpected beach visit. The animal was safely returned to its owner, unharmed and likely unaware of the chaos it had caused. Luxury retail has skyrocketed, with sales in the first half of this year soaring to four times the levels seen in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, according to a market survey by The 1 Insight. This staggering growth comes despite a sluggish economy, thanks largely to the spending habits of new-generation shoppers. The 1 Insight report highlights the resurgence of the “lipstick effect,” a phenomenon where consumers, even during economic downturns, opt for small indulgences like premium lipsticks. This trend has been observed globally, but the recent survey underscores its strong presence in the luxury market. In a breakdown of the luxury sector, beauty products have outshone fashion items, outperforming them by about 10%. Among the hottest sellers in the beauty segment are lipsticks, makeup palettes, and perfumes. In fashion, handbags, accessories, and shoes top the list. The survey also provides a fascinating glimpse into the shopping preferences of different generations. Gen Z (born 1997-2012) gravitates towards luxury cosmetics, perfumes, and skincare products. Meanwhile, Gen Y (born 1981-1996) shows a stronger preference for fashion-related items, followed by skincare and perfumes. Older generations, like Gen X (born 1965-1980) and Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), lean towards skincare, fashion products, and cosmetics. Notably, these groups also exhibit higher brand loyalty compared to the more brand-fluid Gen Z. Additionally, while younger consumers favour online shopping via e-commerce platforms and social media, Gen X and Baby Boomers still prefer the traditional storefront experience. A separate survey by CRC VoiceShare, conducted from May to June, revealed that half of the respondents had purchased at least one fashion or beauty item in the past month. Most respondents expressed a preference for shopping at department stores, citing the superior customer experience and the tangible sense of luxury, reported The Nation. Former MPs of the now defunct Move Forward party will meet on Friday to discuss the formation of a new executive committee for a new party. Sirikanya Tansakul, a leading MP, said today that she expects the discussion go smoothly and all the former MPs will move to a new home together. Asked about a report that some party members may be reluctant to sit on the executive committee, out of concerns that they be debarred from contesting elections if the new party is also dissolved by the Constitutional Court, she admitted that some may be worried, adding, however, that it will become clear tomorrow the exact number of the new committee members and who they will be.
