Several airlines have introduced weight checks for passengers and their luggage before boarding to calculate standard and average passenger weight. This passenger weigh-in measure, initiated today, allows airlines to distribute weight more effectively on international flights, thus reducing fuel usage. Foreign airlines have implemented the passenger weigh-in rule to investigate and calculate standard and average passenger weight. The collected data will help them ascertain weight distribution on their international flights, contributing to reduced aeroplane fuel consumption. Previously, the Fly AirAsia Facebook page posted that during the week of October 16 to 20, at Don Mueang Airport, some flights from various airlines requested volunteer passengers to weigh themselves and their luggage to gather average weight data. This passenger weigh-in data would then be used to update and enhance service efficiency, aligning with safety standards. The airlines carried out this operation in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand to collect such data. Passenger weight data will be kept confidential, complying with the PDPA law. Recently, Thai Lion Air also initiated a passenger weigh-in measure. They stated that during the week of October 17 to 20, they invited passengers to contribute to average weight statistics for themselves and their luggage. Forty victims, representing more than 100 others, filed a complaint with the police after a Thai woman lured them into buying fake concert tickets and perfume from their beloved Thai singer, Palitchoke “Peck” Ayanaputra. One of the victims, whose identity has not been revealed, told ThaiRath that Peck’s fans formed a group on social media to talk about Peck and his performances. For an upcoming concert, called The Concert Application Presents Peck Aof Ice InFriendnity Concert, a member of the group named Ning volunteered to buy tickets for the others. Ning claimed that she knew a lot of influential people in the Thai music industry and could buy the tickets and the perfume produced by Peck at a cheaper price. As a consequence, dozens of fans decided to buy tickets and perfume through Ning. They sent the money to her but never received anything in return. The victim said she and others trusted Ning because they had met her several times at Peck’s concerts and events. More than 100,000 baht was transferred to Ning’s bank account, but she never gave them the promised products. These are Phrae, Phetchaburi, Roi Et, and Narathiwat. “These provinces cover all regions, but that does not mean that services can only be received by residents of these provinces. The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau is gearing up to issue an arrest warrant for a Myanmar national involved in a fraudulent iPhone sale to a sixth-form student. The scheme involved easily controlled mule accounts, with a recent arrest of a 39 year old woman, Nattanicha Suksri, who was involved in withdrawing funds. The arrest took place yesterday in Chiang Rai province. During the investigation, the Cyber Police, led by Police Lieutenant Chaiyaphon Thapvong, interrogated three suspects, including 18 year old Ratanaporn Chankeang and 19 year old Theerawat Sridon. Both were found to be the third and fourth mule account holders, respectively. All three suspects admitted to their roles in the scheme. Young people were paid 3,000 baht to set up mule accounts, while the money withdrawers were hired via Facebook by a Myanmar national known as Jai. They were tasked with withdrawing money from Thai ATMs using mobile banking apps, without using an ATM card, and then delivering the money to the mastermind at the Mae Sai border checkpoint. They were paid 300 to 500 baht each time and had been operating for a month, withdrawing amounts ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 baht. The most recent withdrawal, on October 15, was for 104,000 baht. It is believed the total amount withdrawn is close to one million baht. The crime network differs from call centre gangs as it involves selling discounted IT products. The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace ageing government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with their carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. The Thai EV initiative move was prompted by a notification issued by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, encouraging the use of EVs within the government sector. PM Srettha’s order, issued via the Secretariat of the Cabinet, has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to collaborate with the Budget Bureau, the Office of the Council of State, and other relevant sectors to facilitate the procurement process for EVs. The order is primarily aimed at replacing older vehicles nearing the end of their lifespan. In addition to the vehicle replacement initiative, the directive also encourages the adoption of EVs in public transportation. The Finance and Energy Ministries, along with the Transport Ministry, have been tasked with integrating electric buses, taxis, and tuk-tuks into public transportation services. Further outlining the government’s commitment to promoting EV use, the 61 year old prime minister order also instructs the Transport and Energy Ministries to collaborate with appropriate sectors to build EV charging stations across the country. This move aims to bolster the infrastructure needed to support the demands of individual EV users nationwide. Thailand has recently taken steps to lift the long-standing emergency rule in several districts in its restive southern provinces, where a persistent Muslim insurgency has plagued the region for over two decades. Critics have also voiced concerns about the severe human rights abuses that have been associated with these emergency measures. Some 6,000+ people have died in the Southern Insurgency this century. The emergency decree, initially imposed in 2005, covered the country’s three southernmost provinces – Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani – which have a significant population of ethnic Malay Muslims. This measure granted security forces the authority to detain suspects without charges for up to 30 days and provided legal immunity for actions carried out in the line of duty. Thailand is geared towards fostering new partnerships with Japan’s Wakayama prefecture, with a particular emphasis on the co-development of the furniture and agricultural processing sectors. The main objectives of this business collaboration include enhancing product development and expanding export possibilities. Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, following a discussion with Wakayama’s governor, Kishimoto Shuhei, yesterday, stated that he urged the prefecture to encourage business collaboration between Thai and Japanese entrepreneurs within the furniture and agricultural processing sectors. This would facilitate the creation of joint products that capitalise on each nation’s unique capabilities. Phumtham also encouraged Wakayama’s agricultural processing entrepreneurs to consider sourcing raw materials from Thailand for their products. He specifically mentioned Nakata Foods Co, an attendee at the recent Thaifex–Anuga Asia 2023 food and beverage trade fair, which has shown interest in importing passion fruit juice from Thailand to manufacture alcoholic beverages. Phumtham confirmed that negotiations between the companies are currently underway. He assured Shuhei that the ministry is prepared to offer its complete support to any other prefecture companies interested in importing Thai goods. On May 28, 2019, Thailand’s International Trade Promotion Department signed a memorandum of understanding with the Wakayama government. The agreement was designed to stimulate trade cooperation and the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in both countries. Phumtham remarked that this pact has facilitated ongoing collaboration between the two regions. In response to circulating rumors, Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Puangpet Chunlaiad addressed concerns regarding misleading news centered around Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. She highlighted that today’s ease of disseminating information via social media allows certain individuals to propagate false narratives without due verification. Such narratives, she elaborated, are purposefully crafted, as seen during the Prime Minister’s recent visit to the People’s Republic of China. On this trip, he took part in the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation, connecting with diverse business leaders and investors while solidifying diplomatic ties. However, certain factions misconstrued this visit, further spreading misconceptions. In power for less than two months, the government of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has already run into legal issues that could potentially land the PM and his Cabinet members in jail. Petitioners recently filed complaints against Srettha over last month’s appointment of a new national police chief. Srettha nominated Pol General Torsak Sukvimol for the job despite him being the least senior among the four candidates – a move which critics claimed violated the law, regulations, and ethical standards. The legal trouble has placed another man in the public spotlight. He said Thailand’s land bridge project will complement China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which is supported by the Thai government, adding that his visit to Beijing to attend the international forum on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), is successful and is giving him confidence that, with the implementation of the land bridge and investment in more electric vehicle assembly plants by Chinese investors, among other industries, Thailand’s economic development will be given a big shot in the arm. The land bridge will link Chumphon province, on the Gulf of Thailand coast, with Ranong province, on the Andaman Sea coast, with a road and rail system for the transport of goods between the ports on each coast. This will shorten the distance for cargo currently using the Straits of Malacca and save about four transit days.
