  1. A 12 year old girl has been missing for three continuous days under mysterious circumstances. Her distraught mother found a chat conversation between her daughter and a young man, prompting urgent police action to locate her. Concerns for her safety arose when the last CCTV footage of her was found at 10am today at Bang Na Police Station. Kanthasat Pongpaibulvech, also known as Gun Jompholung, along with the mother of the missing girl, asked Police Lieutenant Colonel Surapong Sukyaem, Bang Na Police Station’s investigation officer, for assistance. They fear the girl has been lured away and could be in danger of exploitation or human trafficking. Gun Jompholung relayed that the mother reported her daughter missing for three days. She had seen a chat conversation between her daughter and a man, who was persuading and pressuring the young girl to meet him. CCTV footage showed the girl leaving with a backpack and being taken away on a motorcycle by a man. Upon investigation, it was revealed that this man was the owner of the apartment where they lived. The girl was deceived by the man from the chat conversation, who then tricked the apartment owner into dropping her off at the Ekkamai bus terminal, claiming she was going to visit relatives in another province. Since then, she has been unreachable, leaving her mother extremely worried. Furthermore, the mother of the 20 year old man suspected of luring the girl contacted Gun Jompholung, claiming ignorance of the matter and not wanting it to become a big issue. She suggested settling the matter financially, which the girl’s parents firmly rejected, only wanting their daughter returned safely. 3. A kayaking adventure off the coast of Pattaya nearly ended in tragedy as a boat carrying a 42 year old man and a 14 year old girl capsized in the early hours of yesterday morning. The incident, which occurred at 4.30am, drew swift response from emergency services who attended the scene near Walking Street in South Pattaya, Banglamung district, Chon Buri province. The sandy beach was awash with tourists who watched in growing horror as two figures struggled to stay afloat about 200 metres from the shore. The sinking silhouette of a capsized kayak painted a chilling picture of the perilous situation unfolding. First responders raced against time to reach the pair, subsequently identified as 42 year old Nopporn Buasunthon and a 14 year old girl, known only as ‘A’ to protect her identity due to her young age. Both individuals managed to reach the safety of the shore unscathed, despite their kayak’s disastrous encounter with the waters of Pattaya. Nopporn explained that he had met the young girl and her friends by chance on the beach. She mentioned that she was on holiday and had never experienced the sea before. Engaging in the spirit of hospitality, Nopporn agreed to take her kayaking. However, their maritime adventure was cut short as their kayak began to sink. 7. A peculiar health superstitions case was shared by a renowned neurosurgeon at Chiang Mai Ram Hospital involving a 55 year old male patient who postponed a scheduled brain surgery due to astrological beliefs. The patient’s health condition involved a brain haemorrhage, caused by a fall two months ago. The neurosurgeon, Pracha Kanyaphrasith, revealed his patient’s brain was still swollen from the accident, and a scheduled surgery was intended to replace a section of his skull that had been removed. The patient, however, refused to proceed with the surgery as it fell on a day when astrologically, the planet ‘Rahu’ was transitioning. This transition, according to some beliefs, could bring misfortune. Pracha expressed his frustration over the incident, questioning why people prioritise fortune-telling over their health. “We often look to astrology for insights about our finances, jobs, homes, cars, love lives, and families. But when it comes to health, we often neglect it until the last minute.” By Nattapong Westwood Caption: Photo: Freepik Full story: The Thaiger 2023-10-20 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 9. A Thai husband and wife were apprehended by the Royal Thai Police for allegedly deceiving women through a dating app, playing them with alcohol, filming explicit content, and subsequently selling it on social media platforms. The couple, 24 year old Kantakawee Boonchalom and 27 year old Rossukon Phanarboon, who identified themselves as sex creators, reportedly earned around 600,000 baht from their illicit activities. The arrest followed after the police discovered a Twitter account posting explicit content and inviting interested individuals to join a private group for a membership fee of 450 baht. Additionally, content was advertised on the website OnlyFans, where access was priced at US$17 per month (700 baht). Investigations revealed that the account belonged to Kantakawee and Rossukon, who were not only the posters but also featured in over 50 explicit videos with various women. The videos included women in school and university uniforms, some of whom appeared intoxicated and unable to control themselves. Following the collection of evidence, the couple was arrested in their condominium in Nonthaburi Province, which was also used as the filming location. Upon inspecting the suspects’ phones and computers, the police found a significant amount of explicit content, most of which involved women who appeared to be in an intoxicated state, leading to involuntary sexual exploitation and filming. 13. Several airlines have introduced weight checks for passengers and their luggage before boarding to calculate standard and average passenger weight. This passenger weigh-in measure, initiated today, allows airlines to distribute weight more effectively on international flights, thus reducing fuel usage. Foreign airlines have implemented the passenger weigh-in rule to investigate and calculate standard and average passenger weight. The collected data will help them ascertain weight distribution on their international flights, contributing to reduced aeroplane fuel consumption. Previously, the Fly AirAsia Facebook page posted that during the week of October 16 to 20, at Don Mueang Airport, some flights from various airlines requested volunteer passengers to weigh themselves and their luggage to gather average weight data. This passenger weigh-in data would then be used to update and enhance service efficiency, aligning with safety standards. The airlines carried out this operation in collaboration with the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand to collect such data. Passenger weight data will be kept confidential, complying with the PDPA law. Recently, Thai Lion Air also initiated a passenger weigh-in measure. They stated that during the week of October 17 to 20, they invited passengers to contribute to average weight statistics for themselves and their luggage. The scheme involved easily controlled mule accounts, with a recent arrest of a 39 year old woman, Nattanicha Suksri, who was involved in withdrawing funds. The arrest took place yesterday in Chiang Rai province. During the investigation, the Cyber Police, led by Police Lieutenant Chaiyaphon Thapvong, interrogated three suspects, including 18 year old Ratanaporn Chankeang and 19 year old Theerawat Sridon. Both were found to be the third and fourth mule account holders, respectively. All three suspects admitted to their roles in the scheme. Young people were paid 3,000 baht to set up mule accounts, while the money withdrawers were hired via Facebook by a Myanmar national known as Jai. They were tasked with withdrawing money from Thai ATMs using mobile banking apps, without using an ATM card, and then delivering the money to the mastermind at the Mae Sai border checkpoint. They were paid 300 to 500 baht each time and had been operating for a month, withdrawing amounts ranging from 1,000 to 100,000 baht. The most recent withdrawal, on October 15, was for 104,000 baht. 21. The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace ageing government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with their carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. The Thai EV initiative move was prompted by a notification issued by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, encouraging the use of EVs within the government sector. PM Srettha’s order, issued via the Secretariat of the Cabinet, has directed the Finance and Energy Ministries to collaborate with the Budget Bureau, the Office of the Council of State, and other relevant sectors to facilitate the procurement process for EVs. The order is primarily aimed at replacing older vehicles nearing the end of their lifespan. In addition to the vehicle replacement initiative, the directive also encourages the adoption of EVs in public transportation. The Finance and Energy Ministries, along with the Transport Ministry, have been tasked with integrating electric buses, taxis, and tuk-tuks into public transportation services. Further outlining the government’s commitment to promoting EV use, the 61 year old prime minister order also instructs the Transport and Energy Ministries to collaborate with appropriate sectors to build EV charging stations across the country. This move aims to bolster the infrastructure needed to support the demands of individual EV users nationwide. 25. Thailand has recently taken steps to lift the long-standing emergency rule in several districts in its restive southern provinces, where a persistent Muslim insurgency has plagued the region for over two decades. Critics have also voiced concerns about the severe human rights abuses that have been associated with these emergency measures. Some 6,000+ people have died in the Southern Insurgency this century. The emergency decree, initially imposed in 2005, covered the country’s three southernmost provinces – Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani – which have a significant population of ethnic Malay Muslims. This measure granted security forces the authority to detain suspects without charges for up to 30 days and provided legal immunity for actions carried out in the line of duty.
