A two year old toddler was locked in a car for hours after her mother left her alone to go shopping. The incident, which took place at a convenience store on Niphat Uthit Road behind the Florida Hotel in downtown Hat Yai, Songkhla province, occurred at 10am today. The girl had accidentally hit the lock button, trapping herself inside the vehicle. The vehicle, a minivan, was left running with the air conditioning on while the mother ran errands. Upon returning, however, she discovered that her daughter had inadvertently locked the doors and was unable to get out. Despite her best efforts, the doors remained locked for several hours. Eventually, the emergency rescue unit of the Mit Samakee Foundation (Tung Sia Siang Tueng) in Hat Yai was alerted to the situation by store employees, who reported that a child had been trapped in a car for hours and that the doors couldn’t be opened, reported KhaoSod. The rescue team successfully unlocked the car door within five minutes using a metal rod inserted through the driver’s side window. The young girl was understandably upset and cried as her mother comforted her. Royal Forestry Department authorities have successfully captured an Asian black bear that was stealing food from a local kitchen in Prachantakarm district in the central province of Prachin Buri. The 62 year old homeowner, Wimon Ngammeesri, reached out to the authorities after the black bear repeatedly stole food from her refrigerator and food cupboard. Wimon explained that her house is close to the forest and has several fruit trees. Wimon revealed that the first night the bear stole two trays of sausages and bread from her fridge. Wimon said the bear came back for another night and destroyed her cupboard to get rice and eggs. She reported the problem to the authorities, who came to her house to deploy a trap to apprehend the persistent bear. Wimon went on to explain that she believed that the bear would never return to the house but she went to check the trap in the middle of the night and found the bear in the cage. A Thai woman is facing charges after faking a theft and filing a fake police report to escape a 48,000 baht debt. The 45 year old woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, made the complaint to officers at Mueang Trat Police Station by phone yesterday, October 18. She explained that four thieves in a pickup with no number plate cut off her pickup on Baan Kaeng Prai Road in the eastern province of Trat. The woman said two thieves got out of the pickup and threatened her to hand over her money. She told police that she had to give it to them because she was alone at the time and was afraid the gang would attack her. The Thai woman said handed over 48,000 baht to the thieves. The woman said she could remember the identities of all four thieves. She told police about the thieves’ height, hairstyle and build. She also reported that the thieves fled the scene and went to Khao Saming district in Trat province. Police said it was strange that the woman, who had undergone such a harrowing ordeal while travelling alone, was able to remember many details. Phuket Land Transport Office (PLTO) is currently accepting applications from operators to establish a circular ‘baht bus’ style public transportation system in Phuket’s busiest tourist area. The announcement was made on the PLTO’s official Facebook page yesterday, with three separate notices for potential operators to provide bus transport services within Patong. Two of these notices outlined two circular routes, while the third is for the traditional bus service between the old bus station on Phang Nga Rd in Phuket Town and Patong. Both circular routes are set to commence from the Bangla Police Box on Patong Beach Road (Thaweewong Road) and continue north to the Dolphin Circle before turning right onto Phra Barami Road. One service will then turn onto Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road while the second will take a right onto Phra Metta Road. Both routes will then continue south to the southern end of Patong, turn right onto Prachanukroh Road and head back towards Patong Beach. The buses will then return to the Bangla Police Box before restarting their circular route. As outlined in the PLTO’s formal announcement, the vehicles used for these services must not be passenger vans. Instead, the type of vehicle will depend on the number of passengers and a minimum of three vehicles must be provided for the service along Rat-U-Thit 200 Pi Road while at least two vehicles must be available for the Phra Metta Rd route. Both services are required to make a minimum of 40 trips per day, charging a fare of 40 baht. These new services are intended to provide both convenience and safety to public bus users and enhance the competitiveness of the bus transportation system. Applicants are required to provide details of the buses or other vehicles to be used, storage, repair and maintenance sites, and plans for bus service management, anti-pollution and environmental measures, employee development, service models, and vehicle and passenger safety. Applicants can contact the PLTO directly for more information and have until November 28 to submit their applications. Despite this, there has been no official mention of the new services to be provided to residents and tourists in the town of Patong Municipality. A criminal group has been flagged for attempting to scam people by posing as the Thai Red Cross Society, on LINE and Facebook according to a warning issued by Phuket’s Public Relations Department (PR Phuket). The scam involves an OpenChat group on LINE, a popular Thai messaging app, where members are invited to donate money under the guise of the Thai Red Cross Society to receive commissions and compete for prizes. The Thai Red Cross clarified, however, that it has no policy of accepting donations in this manner. Instead, it has advised potential donors to ensure that donations are made to an account under the organisation’s name Thai Red Cross Income Procurement Office. The society also provided a contact number for people who witness such illegal activities. In addition to this LINE and Facebook scam, the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA Phuket) issued a warning about a scam operation targetting people on the island. According to a post on its official Facebook page, a resident was duped into transferring money to an impostor posing as an official from the Provincial Electricity Authority. Over the past eight months, the tourism industry in Phuket has managed to amass a substantial revenue of nearly 370 billion baht, as reported by the President of the Phuket Tourism Association. This encouraging development signals a significant rebound from the adverse effects of Covid-19, with the present surge in tourist numbers representing a remarkable 40% year-on-year rise when compared to the figures from 2019. The president of the Phuket Tourism Association, Thanet Tantipiriya, shared the positive news with Thai media. “Phuket’s earnings in the past eight months have been around 370 billion baht. Compared to 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, there’s a 40% yearly increment in the number of tourists.” Further emphasising the positive trends in Phuket’s tourism sector, Thanet noted that almost 80% of the hotel rooms are already reserved for the upcoming high season, particularly those near the beaches.
