Leading members of the Thai Rice Exporters’ Association are seeking a meeting with Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, to discuss Thai rice exports and Thai rice’s competitiveness on the global market, after Thailand was recently pushed to the world’s third largest rice exporter by Vietnam. Despite its recent ban on rice exports, India remains in the top spot. Chukiat Opaswongse, president of the association, said today (Tuesday) that, during the first eight months of this year, Vietnam exported 5.81 million tonnes of rice compared to Thailand’s 5.27 million. He explained that Vietnam managed export more than Thailand because the country bought about two million tonnes of paddy from Cambodia, milled the grains and re-exported them under a Vietnamese brand, adding that Vietnam may buy up to four million tonnes of paddy from Cambodia for export. A giant python, almost 5 metres long and weighing 7 kilogrammes, caused a stir today when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala, Thailand. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers. Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop at 90/26 Gunung Janoang. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation, Sawang Betong Thammasathan. He was accompanied by Patcharin Inta-at, president of the Betong Social Association, and a team of Sawang Betong rescuers. The team cautiously moved the pile of goods to expose the python, using special equipment to grip its head. The tight space and the python’s size made the task challenging. Despite the tense situation, the rescuers and onlookers were relieved when the python showed no signs of aggression. The rescue operation took about 30 minutes, after which the python was slowly drawn out of the shop and displayed on the stone patio in front of the house. The crowd marvelled at the spectacle, with some gasping at the python’s size – nearly 5 metres long and weighing about 7 kilogrammes. A Thai thief who stole women’s underwear from a coin-operated laundry shop has been apprehended. The arrest occurred after the police issued an arrest warrant, and the suspect was later found at an entertainment venue. Numerous women’s undergarments were discovered hidden under the seat of his motorbike. Police Lieutenant Colonel Jedsada Yangnok, the superintendent of Wang Thong Lang Police Station, today revealed details of the case. The incident happened in a coin-operated laundry shop within Lat Phrao Soi 112. On Saturday, September 23, the laundry shop owner, Sunya, reported to the investigator that on September 18, around 8pm, a customer had left clothes at the shop for washing. Once the clothes were clean, Sunya alerted the customer to collect them. However, the customer failed to do so, leaving the clothes at the shop. The next morning, the customer found that approximately five to ten pieces of women’s underwear were missing. Checking the CCTV footage, Sunya discovered that on September 19 around 5.53am, an unidentified man had rifled through the customer’s clothes and stolen the women’s underwear before fleeing the scene, reported Khaosod. Survivor’s trauma lingers a year after the daycare centre massacre Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post The trauma of the brutal daycare centre massacre at a Thai nursery still lingers, especially for Paweenuch Supolwong, a four year old survivor in Nong Bua Lamphu. The trauma of the brutal daycare centre massacre at a Thai nursery still lingers, especially for Paweenuch Supolwong, a four year old survivor in Nong Bua Lamphu. The horrific daycare centre massacre that unfolded a year ago in the rural village of Uthai Sawan, ended in the deaths of 36 people, shattering the peace of this close-knit community. Now, every movement of Paweenuch, affectionately known as Ammy, is under the watchful eyes of CCTV cameras installed both at her home and nursery. Her grandmother, Yupin Srithong, confessed to AFP about her lingering fear and reluctance to send Ammy back to school. “I don’t want to let her out of my sight.” On October 6, 2022, during the children’s nap time, a former police officer, Panya Khamrab, committed the heinous act. Armed with a knife and a gun, he slaughtered 12 adults and 24 children, all but one aged five or under, before taking his own life. The incident marked one of the deadliest massacres in Thailand’s history. Ammy, who was asleep under a blanket, miraculously survived but the daycare centre massacre continues to haunt her. She is easily frightened by loud noises, Yupin revealed. She’ll say, “There’s shooting again” and she’ll then ask me to hug her. Far from heaven Uthai Sawan, roughly translated to heaven, is approximately 500 kilometres north of Bangkok in Nong Bua Lam Phu province, one of Thailand’s poorest regions. Like many families in the area, Ammy’s parents relocated to Bangkok for better-paid work, leaving her in the care of her grandparents. A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint. The director of the Mae Ping Post Office, Kraisri Thongwirat, discovered that two helmets belonging to the post office had gone missing yesterday, October 2. The two helmets had been left at his welfare house near the post office. They were red and white and had the Thailand Post logo on them. To track down the thieves, Kraisri checked a security camera at the house and spotted the two foreign thieves on a red Honda Click motorcycle. The motorbike is presumed to be a tourist rental as it had no number plate. In the video, a foreign man was seen parking the motorcycle in front of the welfare house at about 11.20am and entering the premises to steal the helmets. The foreign woman later walked to the front of the house and waited for the man. They helped each other put on the helmets and did not appear to be in a hurry. SUPHAN BURI (NNT) - Efforts to monitor and manage potential flooding in the capital district of Suphan Buri province were accelerated recently, as local water levels rise and concerns among local communities grow. An on-site inspection of water levels at the Pho Phraya floodgate was carried out by Varawut Silpa-archa, Minister of Social Development and Human Security, along with the Member of Parliament for Suphan Buri and other relevant authorities. Minister Varawut noted that concerns raised by a member of parliament (MP) representing Suphan Buri reflect those of the local populace. Anxiety levels have risen among residents, particularly after witnessing heavy flooding in Sukhothai, Phrae, and Lampang provinces. Presently, the flow rate through the Chao Phraya Dam remains at a safe level which is below 1,000 cubic meters per second, which ensures that there is currently no need to release additional water downstream. For precautionary reasons, Varawut stated that his team is continuously monitoring water levels at various floodgates and river sections, to plan for any long-term flooding events. He emphasized that even in the absence of additional rainfall, water from the northern region should be able to flow safely through the Chao Phraya River to the sea. The flooding in Thailand’s central province of Sukhothai is attributable to areas upstream of the province being affected by monsoon troughs since late September, causing heavy rainfall in the Yom River basin, according to Thaweesak Thanadechophol, deputy director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department (RID). Because the Yom River is narrow and not very deep, the swollen river quickly overtopped its banks, which led to the collapse of embankments in several locations, sending water sweeping through many villages in Sukhothai province, he told Thai PBS Online today. About 4,000 households have been affected by flooding and more than 16,000 hectares farmland have been damaged. Following the Bank of Thailand‘s decision to hike its policy rate by 0.25 percentage points, banks are now increasing both their loan and deposit rates. In a bid to attract depositors, special rates are being offered on digital savings products. Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), the country’s fourth-largest lender by total assets, has acted promptly to the central bank’s policy rate rise by lifting its prime loan rate by 0.25 percentage points. The change is effective from today. All types of loan rates have also been increased, including the minimum retail rate (MRR) which now stands at 7.3% annually, the minimum loan rate (MLR) at 7.05% annually, and the minimum overdraft rate (MOR) at 7.575%. According to SCB’s Chief Executive Kris Chantanotoke, these increased loan rates are indicative of higher financial costs and are consistent with the rising rates across the industry. SCB has also increased deposit rates by a maximum of 0.3%. The bank’s business strategy, titled “digital bank with a human touch,” has led to a 0.1-0.3% hike in digital saving rates to attract depositors. Last Wednesday, the Bank of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) increased its benchmark interest rate by 0.25 percentage points to 2.5%, the most substantial level in ten years. However, economists predict this to be the conclusion of the rate hike cycle, as the MPC plans to maintain the policy rate at the existing level for a considerable duration. Thai senators are preparing to lodge a complaint with the Icelandic government following an incident where Doctor Porntip Rojanasunan was thrown out of a Thai restaurant in Iceland by its Thai proprietor. Last week, a video went viral on Thai social media depicting a Thai man, who identified himself as the owner of a restaurant in Iceland, expelling Porntip from his establishment. Porntip and her companions declined to vacate the premises, advising the owner to maintain a separation between his political views and personal life. In the video, the proprietor can be heard telling them to clear off. “Go! Go! Get out of here! Get the hell out of here! You are corrupt. Get out! Get out of here! You do not belong here. We do not welcome you.” Porntip’s friend, Bhumjaithai Party MP Mallika Jirapanvanit, did not believe the Thai man was the owner of the restaurant and asked him to prove his status. The man ignored Mallika’s curiosity and kept asking Porntip to leave. The restaurant owner insisted that the other visitors in the group could stay, but Porntip had to leave. “I only blame her (Porntip). You can all stay. I can accept that. I cannot accept what she has done to Thailand. I hate her. I really hate her.
