DSI probes Kamnan Nok’s construction business The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has launched an investigation into the construction business of Praween Chanklai, aka “Kamnan Nok”, to determine whether it was involved in price collusion when bidding for road construction projects or had attempted to intimidate other bidders. Praween inherited the construction from his father, a former headman of Ta Kong sub-district in Mueang district of Nakhon Pathom province, who established the P. Raweekanok Construction Company, which reportedly won several road, building and bridge construction projects, as well as providing canal dredging and rental services in Nakhon Pathom and several neighbouring provinces. Praween later set up another company, the P. Phatanarungrod Construction Company. 8. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Disease Control (DDC) is urging the public, especially those with underlying medical conditions that could worsen tuberculosis (TB), to undergo TB screenings to prevent its spread. The call comes in response to recent reports of a well-known actor contracting TB, likely due to close contact with a friend who succumbed to the disease on September 5. According to DDC Director-General Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong, Thailand is one of the top 30 countries globally with the highest number of active TB cases. Thailand records some 103,000 new TB cases annually, resulting in about 12,000 TB-related deaths. While a quarter of the Thai population has developed some resistance to TB, individuals with weakened immune systems are still at high risk of severe symptoms. Dr Tares has advised people with chronic health conditions, along with those residing in congested environments, individuals struggling with substance addiction, such as drugs or alcohol, migrant workers, and frontline medical staff to seriously consider undergoing regular TB screenings. TB is an airborne respiratory disease transmitted through coughing, sneezing, and talking. Common symptoms include a persistent cough lasting over two weeks, mild fever, loss of appetite and weight loss. The illness is treatable with a recommended six-month medication regimen. Early detection is crucial and individuals with family members diagnosed with TB are advised to seek immediate medical attention to prevent transmission. For more information, the DDC offers assistance through their 1442 hotline and the tuberculosis division at 02-211-2224. 10. BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has expressed deep regret over the fatal shooting of a veteran police officer at a local influential figure’s residence in Nakhon Pathom. The premier affirmed that his government does not condone the practice of buying or selling official positions, in response to speculation that the incident may have been related to conflicts over such appointments. The tragic incident occurred during a meal hosted at the home of the chief of Takong sub-district in Nakhon Pathom’s capital district. Among the guests were several local police officers. Royal Thai Police Deputy Commissioner Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn revealed that the crime scene had been tampered with, including via the disabling of CCTV cameras, removal of blood stains, and disposal of bullet casings. He noted that despite the presence of three superintendent-level police officers at the scene, evidence was still allowed to be destroyed. The prime minister urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the matter, stressing the impact that unfair allocation or purchasing of official positions could have on the morale of dedicated civil servants. 14. Thailand’s foreign policy, from the perspective of the Move Forward party, should see the country acting as a “middle power” with principles and dignity, adhering to a rules-based international order and able to speak out freely, without fear of superpowers. Presenting a lecture to students of the Faculty of Political Science at Chulalongkorn University on “Thailand’s Challenges and Opportunities vis-vis ASEAN and the Super Powers”, Pita said that Thailand’s role in ASEAN, and ASEAN’s role as a regional grouping, has declined over the past five years, citing the fact that many world leaders chose to visit Vietnam and Indonesia, instead of Thailand, and some world leaders did not attend the ASEAN Summit, but assigned their deputies to do so. If the Move Forward party were in government, Pita said that Thailand would open a humanitarian economic corridor at the Thai-Myanmar border, to provide shelter to Myanmar people displaced by the war in their country and allow them to work legally on Thai soil. 18. The Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases granted a police request today (Monday) to have six police officers detained for 12 days, pending investigation into their alleged misconduct in abetting the escape of two murder suspects and destroying evidence. The court also rejected bail applications for the six officers, on the grounds that they may attempt to escape or tamper with evidence related to the fatal shooting at the house of Praween Chanklai, aka “Kamnan Nok”, the chief of Ta Kong sub-district in Mueang district of Nakhon Pathom last Wednesday night, in which one highway police officer was killed and another injured. The six officers, including four superintendents, were at Praween’s house at the time of the shooting. Some of them are accused of aiding and abetting in the escape of Praween and his body guard, the gunman, while others removed the CCTV server from the house. Phra Mahacheep Suthiyano, abbot of Madua Temple, said that they wanted to cut the trees down because they had died more than ten years ago and the branches occasionally fall down, causing damage to property. The temple, however, agreed to the conservation of the parakeets, which are breeding in the hollows in the trees, he said. 22. In an unexpected turn of events, Hope for Strays Foundation, a registered non-profit organisation, is facing a critical situation. Located in Nongprue, to the east of Pattaya, the Foundation is a sanctuary for over 300 dogs. However, the impending end of the land lease in March of next year has put the existence of the shelter in jeopardy. A new home is urgently needed for these dogs, and the current shelter must be dismantled. For nearly 15 years, Hope for Strays has been a beacon of hope for abandoned, abused, and neglected dogs in Thailand. Over the past seven years, the shelter has been their refuge, offering them love, care, and a second chance at life. Thousands of vaccinations have been administered here, over 400 dogs have been sterilised, and countless sick or injured dogs have received veterinary treatment. The shelter even provides twice-daily meals for many street dogs. The thought of these dogs facing an uncertain future due to the lack of a shelter is heart-wrenching. The foundation spokesperson said it is heartbreaking to think of the uncertain future these dogs face if we cannot secure a new shelter for them. “We are in desperate need of financial assistance to construct a new shelter that can accommodate these beloved dogs and ensure their safety and happiness.” Funds are now urgently needed for multiple purposes. The first step is the acquisition of suitable land. The only viable option currently is some farmland in north-central Thailand. Although the land has been paid for, it lacks the necessary services required to operate the shelter. The area also sees fewer tourists, who contribute significantly to the Foundation’s income in Pattaya. 24. Move Forward party-list MP Chaiwat Sathawornwichit has claimed that the government has over-estimated the benefits of the “digital wallet” scheme in boosting the economy, as the timing is not right for its implementation. During his speech in parliament today (Monday), he said populist schemes, such as the digital wallet, should be implemented at a time when the economy is contracting, not when it is expanding, as it is now in Thailand, although the expansion is minimal. Like the application of an electric shock to a patient having a heart attack, Chaiwat said that the government’s plan to use the digital wallet to kick-start the economy is like applying an electric shock to a healthy person, the result may be fatal.
