  4. Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) officers arrested a senior engineer at Lat Krabang District Office in Bangkok on a corruption accusation. The official was reportedly accused of extorting 50,000 baht from a construction contractor. The Office of the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) received a complaint about corruption from a construction contractor. According to the complainant, the senior engineer in question, 59 year old Wiroj, pressured the contractor to pay him by making a lot of edits to the construction plans. It is alleged he requested the contractor to pay 50,000 baht in exchange for a construction permit. The PACC conducted a further investigation into the matter and found that the complaint was genuine and handed the case over to the CIB to execute the arrest. The CIB engaged with the construction contractor, urging him to prepare the money, and then arrange a meeting with Wiroj at the district office, set for September 5. On the meeting day, the CIB monitored the district office and witnessed Pairoj taking a paper bag with money from the contractor. The CIB officers swiftly revealed themselves, informing Wiroj of the accusations against him. Wiroj denied the allegation. The young victim’s mother revealed to Channel 3 that her daughter had met the alleged pedophile abbot through his granddaughter. The victim’s friends told her that the monk would give her money if she visited him. Upon the visit, the girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by the abbot. The abbot reportedly bit the girl’s vagina and breasts and then gave her 100 baht for her time before releasing her. After the incident, he hid the gun behind the crime scene and fled to the forest. On September 4, Phitchanulok Police Commander Thawatch Wongsanga, along with Visut Klaisaeng, director of Wat Bot Police Station, and deputy director Naruenat Boonchuang, interrogated the younger brother for additional information. The police followed Phairat and arrested him in some grassland not far from his home. They also seized the discarded gun used to shoot his brother. Phairat told the police that he and his brother Denchia often quarrelled over issues related to the usage of household items and agricultural vehicles. He revealed that they drank separately before meeting at home and had another argument. Phairat claimed that he picked up the gun but Denchai intervened and accused him of wanting to shoot. 14. A 26 year old vendor found herself entangled in an online loan scam after losing her job and seeking funds for investment. Bee, from Nakhon Phanom’s Pla Pak district, expressed her ordeal through media outlets, warning society about the risks of falling prey to online loan scams. She initially borrowed 30,000 baht via an online application but was left with only 20,000 baht after the deduction of advanced interest. Despite repaying the first loan promptly, she fell into financial difficulties after her second loan, which led her to borrow from different online lenders over two to three months. Bee initially saw an opportunity to borrow money online via a Line application and decided to inquire about the details. After providing her identification card information, address, and mobile phone number, she was approved for her first loan of 30,000 baht. However, 10,000 baht was deducted as advanced interest, leaving her with only 20,000 baht. The terms required her to repay the full 30,000 baht in seven days, which she managed to do. Bee was drawn deeper into the online scam when she was approved for a second loan of 50,000 baht. Similar deductions were made, leaving her with 32,000 baht. She was required to repay the loan in seven days. However, she was unable to meet the repayment deadline due to business-related financial issues. Consequently, she decided to borrow from other online lenders to cover her previous loans, creating a vicious cycle as she was deep in the loan scam over the next two to three months. Unaware of the penalties for late repayment, including hefty fines and interest charges, Bee’s financial situation worsened. She borrowed from a total of 18 online lenders, accumulating a debt of 2.6 million baht. She was pressured to repay approximately 150,000 baht per day, a figure she could not meet. This led to various forms of threats and public shaming, prompting her to believe it was an organised online loan operation scam, reported KhaoSod. 16. Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party, shared his views on the newly formed Thai Cabinet, asserting that his judgment of individuals will be based on principles rather than appearances. He extended his well wishes to the new Cabinet, expressing hope that they would successfully fulfil the promises made during the election campaign. Pita noted that during the pre-election debate, all political parties had presented similar pledges. The 42 year old politician underscored the importance of the government’s commitment to its digital footprint and the promises it made to the electorate during the election campaign. He emphasized that if the government pledged to reform the army, it should follow through, and if it promised improved transportation for all, it should deliver on that commitment. Irrespective of his role, Pita affirmed his dedication to working to safeguard the interests of the public. He stated that he would continue his efforts, whether inside or outside of Parliament. Pita also stressed the importance of working collaboratively with those holding differing views to demonstrate that politics can be inclusive. When questioned about the time the government should be given to prove its effectiveness before facing scrutiny, Pita referred to Natthawut Saikua, the former Secretary-General of the For Thais Party. Natthawut had previously remarked that there was no time for a honeymoon period as the public had been awaiting solutions to their difficulties for too long. Hence, the government must act swiftly. 18. Two Thai women were escorted to a police station after being deceived by a fellow Thai into working in India where they were trafficked to a brothel. The victims are seeking assistance from the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Surachate “Big Joke” Hakparn, to pursue legal action against the exploiter. Kan Jompalang brought the two Thai women to complain about being tricked into sexual trade in India. He said they were interested in working at a Thai massage parlour abroad but, after arriving, they found themselves in an unexpected situation where their Thai caretakers seized their passports. These people acted as mafia, trafficking and forcing the Thai women into prostitution in an Indian brothel. If they wanted to return to Thailand, they had to pay 75,000 baht for their passports. Thirty-year-old Anne explained that on August 18, a friend invited her to work as a masseuse in India, claiming that she could stay for about a year on a visa and earn approximately 100,000 baht per month. If she stayed for a year, she could earn over 1 million baht. The friend then gave her the phone number of a job broker named Kung. Anne contacted her via WhatsApp and sent her personal information. On August 21, after meeting Kung at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Anne flew to India with two older friends who had introduced her to the opportunity. Upon landing at Mumbai Airport, Kung’s team was not there to pick them up. They took a six-hour car journey to Surat, where they found a rental apartment managed by a Thai woman named Yok. The victims were taken to a massage parlour for what they thought was a tour and a job to work as a masseuse. However, they found themselves serving customers in ways they did not expect as the parlour was an Indian brothel. 22. CHONBURI (NNT) - Efforts are underway to assess the environmental impact of a recent crude oil leak near the Thai Oil refinery in Chonburi province. The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources is working with various agencies to manage the situation and prevent oil residue from spreading to other areas. The oil leakage incident occurred at the refinery of Thai Oil Public Company Limited in Sriracha district on September 3, during an oil discharge operation at the Single Buoy Mooring Buoy (SBM-2). Authorities swiftly responded to control the situation, with the Marine Department and the Pollution Control Department cooperating with Thai Oil to manage oil residue and prevent further spreading. Thai Oil later announced successful containment operations, which included closing valves and using extra containment booms in accordance with international regulations, effectively halting any further oil leakage. Apichai Ekwanakul, Acting Director-General of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, said recent inspections by the government and private sector found a thin oil residue film, approximately 5 kilometers wide, drifting towards the western part of Sichang Island and partially towards Ao Udom. Recent checks revealed oil residue off Tamuen Island, prompting Thai Oil to take immediate action to remove it. They have also enlisted help from the Royal Thai Navy in obtaining aerial images using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Authorities are also examining coastal areas susceptible to oil impact, including potential harm to aquaculture, as the area is home to oyster farms along with 1,500 mussel rafts. The Coastal and Marine Resources Research and Development Center is collecting water samples from the affected area for water quality analysis. Authorities are meanwhile closely monitoring the situation to prevent further damage to the aquatic ecosystem. 25. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin today convened at the government house as the Prime Minister reminded Cabinet members to utilize the government budget appropriately throughout his time in office. The meeting took place today after the Prime Minister’s worship of shrines and sacred sites within the government house earlier this morning. He was joined by Cabinet members. The PM during the meeting asked Cabinet members to address urgent issues faced by the public as quickly as possible, particularly those that will not lead legal complications. He urged the ministers to drive forward their work with data and transparency, and asked them to remain united despite coming from different parties. Speaking to members of the media after the meeting, the PM said no resolutions were made in the very first meeting, while the topic of government policy was discussed. On Pheu Thai Party’s campaign promising a 20-baht metro fare in Bangkok, which is not included in the list of government policies to be declared to the parliament, the PM said the government policy serves as a wider scope of work, within which the government will be taking care of all transportation modes - water, air, road, and rail. The PM said the government will oversee the connectivity between metro lines and the use of common tickets. The government will need to review fare rates and the amount of compensation that it may need to provide. The PM will be traveling to Khon Kaen, Udon Thani, and Nong Khai provinces in the northeastern region this weekend. He said the government was aware of the various issues faced by the general public, including the climate impact of El Nino. The PM is expected to be meeting with local farmers during this weekend’s visit.
