In a continuous crackdown on illegal logging, officials from Sri Lanna National Park in Chiang Mai arrested two men and seized valuable processed timber. It is part of broader efforts to deal with crimes against forest resources and wildlife. Additionally, a hunt is underway for four other men allegedly involved in the illegal activities. The order for this intensified action was given by Acting Director Athaphon Charoenchansa, in charge of the Department for Marine and Coastal Resources. He delegated the task to Anan Kunnil, Head of the Sri Lanna National Park, and his inspection officials to carry out continuous patrol routines in the park. During a routine patrol, the officials discovered a group of men cutting down trees with chainsaws near Doi Tham Muang in the area of Ban Pang Daeng, Moo 9, Chiang Dao sub-district, Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai province. Two men were apprehended while four others managed to evade the officers due to their familiarity with the terrain. However, the arrested people could identify the fleeing suspects, reported KhaoSod. Chon Buri Police apprehended and detained two men suspected of illicit drug dealing in the Banglamung district. The arrest unfolded on Monday afternoon, July 17, after residents tipped off the police about suspicious activities happening in their tranquil community. An intriguing piece of information shared by an anonymous person hinted at the presence of a Thai man who was allegedly participating in underhand drug deals, paying special focus on young clients. This dubious activity was reported to have been taking place within a house located in Takhian Tia, a sub-district within Banglamung, Chon Buri. Armed with this crucial detail, the police hastily arranged a sting operation to capture this potential threat to their community. The unexpected police swoop yielded unprecedented results. The 38 year old man, Wicha, was apprehended in his bedroom. A surprising inventory taken during the arrest revealed a total of 1,155 pills of methamphetamine, along with 5.52 grammes of crystal methamphetamine, a digital weighing scale, and a seemingly innocent mobile phone, all seized as evidence. The raid didn’t stop here, though. Wicha, upon being chemically tested, was found to have drugs in his system and didn’t take long to confess his illicit dealings. He goaded the police further by revealing he procured his supplies from a Thai transgender person, known in the local circles as Boss. A scheduled review of the pump system in the Chalong Underpass in Phuket has led to a day-long closure of the passage this Saturday. The routine check-up is a necessity to ensure the pump system’s continued functionality, particularly amidst the heavy rainfalls during Phuket’s soggy season. The Phuket Highways Office (PHO) has confirmed the closure. The inspection draws its significance from its regularity and the intent to ensure the seamless operation of the underpass’ integral pump system. As Phuket goes through periods of heavy showers typical of its rainy season, the functioning of the underpass systems becomes crucial. This Saturday, the underpass will remain closed for vehicular traffic, starting from 9am, right up until 5pm. This restriction is a necessary measure to allow the workers to conduct the system check without hindrance, as explained in an announcement by the Phuket Highways Office. The PHO expressed regret for the inconvenience that travellers may experience due to the tunnel’s closure for the inspection. By Mitch Connor Caption: Picture courtesy of Tipi T. In the coastal paradise of Thailand’s Sirinat National Park, an unexpected occurrence unfurled yesterday. A hapless turtle was found ensnared in discarded fishing nets on Nai Yang Beach, Phuket, severely injured and in distress amid inclement weather. Park officials, alerted to the creature’s predicament by vigilant tourists, made immediate efforts to liberate it from the nets, battling against high waves and forceful winds. The head of the park, Sorasak Rananan, said the turtle was found at 7am, caught up in debris and discarded fishing nets in challenging weather conditions. Upon being freed from the ensnaring nets, it was apparent that the turtle was injured. It bore a wound on one of its legs and one on its body. The officials measured the turtle as part of their rescue efforts and found the creature spanning 60 centimetres from head to tail, with a width of 62 centimetres from the tip of one flipper to the other. The conversation came into the spotlight when Pawida Chantakanal, affectionately known as Teacher Pat from Ayutthaya College, shared her unusual encounter with the senior student during an exam around 12.30pm today. Teacher Pat was both surprised and captivated upon seeing the woman, aged between 60 and 70, wearing a university uniform and confidently joining others to take the exam. Teacher Pat could not resist capturing her admiration in a clip by interviewing the elderly student. The lady shared that she was studying to better comprehend when her grandchildren talked, as she wanted to be their role model. With the knowledge she’d acquired, she planned to apply it to upgrade farming activities at home. Interestingly, she also held a leadership role in her community, reported KhaoSod. A security officer previously stationed at a civil court building in Bangkok has been sentenced to one month in prison and fined 500 baht (US$15) for abusing his position by coercing money from a female journalist for parking. It’s the first time he’s been convicted, with the sentence suspended for a year. The report comes following an incident on July 11, when an overzealous security officer demanded payment from a female journalist for parking her vehicle within the premises of the court. The executive board of the court acknowledged the issue and immediately order the relevant departments to conduct an investigation on the matter of the violation of the court’s power on July 12. The accused officer denied the accusation, claiming he did receive a money transfer, but rather a gift out of gratitude. The court conducted an investigation involving the police, the court security chief, the accused himself, and the female journalist who was coerced to pay for parking whilst covering a criminal court story. The court hearing held today unveiled the sequence of events. The reporter confirmed that the accused asked for money as a parking fee, and a price was negotiated beforehand. After transferring the money to the accused, the journalist relayed the incident to a third person, known as Yoong, and later discussed it with her colleagues. They took a picture of the money transfer slip, and after completing her reporting duties, she immediately posted her experience online, reported KhaoSod. Thai students at Chaturaphak Phiman School in the Isaan province of Roi Et have taken a stand against stereotypes, showing the world that not all Thai students are racist. The student shared a video of them creating a birthday surprise for their black teacher. Three days ago, a video of a Thai student raising her middle fingers at a black teacher in class at a school in Bangkok went viral on Thai social media. The student and her classmates faced fierce criticism on social media for disrespecting the teacher. The students in the class later promised netizens they would officially apologize to the teacher. A video of the apology then followed. It featured students holding a flower chalice and kneeling to apologize to the teacher. According to a report in Thai media, the teacher forgave her students. Unfortunately, the video of the Thai girl flipping her middle fingers to the teacher went viral in in other countries, tarnishing the image of Thai people. To restore the reputation of Thai pupils, a student from another school shared a video of a birthday surprise on her TikTok account, how_to_yada, yesterday, July 19. The video showed students singing Happy Birthday to their foreign teacher and offering three small cakes with flickering candles. In Thailand’s northeast province of Buriram, inhabitants of Ban Dan district are left in confusion as they are being billed for water usage dating back six to nine years. Appearing across each village, these bills have sparked controversy, with municipality staff explaining that the payment must be collected. The complaints escalated as residents within the Ban Dan area, in some cases two to four from each village, and at worst 29 individuals, are being charged retrospectively. The amount levied varies significantly, from 4,000 to 15,000 baht (US$118 to US$440) for water consumption dating back to 2014. Seventy-year-old Chomchuey Jayunram, a noodle vendor, expressed her bewilderment receiving a water bill summing over 10,000 baht (US$294), dating back to 2014. Her monthly water usage ranges between 50 and 150 baht (US$1.5 to US$4), and despite missing payments on some months, Chomchuey questioned the sudden accumulation. A bill collector visits regularly, sometimes offering receipts for payments made. However, why her water service wasn’t discontinued if the bills had remained unpaid remains unclear, reported KhaoSod. The Cabinet recently approved the drafting of a ministerial regulation aimed at protecting children at risk of drug abuse, with a particular focus on the usage of kratom, cannabis, and hemp. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek explained that the goal is to shield children from potential harm to their intellectual and physical development. The new regulation is an amendment to the 2006 ministerial rule that defines children at risk of criminal behavior. Proposed by the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, the updated regulation addresses the behaviors of children who recreationally use kratom, cannabis, hemp or products derived from these substances. These children will be classified as at-risk, thus enabling officers under the 2003 Child Protection Act to better safeguard their welfare.
