Thailand given BBB+ credit rating with stable outlook by Fitch Fitch credit rating agency has affirmed Thailand’s long-germ foreign-currency issuer default rating (IDR) at BBB+, with a stable outlook. Fitch credit rating agency has affirmed Thailand’s long-germ foreign-currency issuer default rating (IDR) at BBB+, with a stable outlook. Fitch warns, however, that lingering political uncertainty may weigh on Thailand’s credit profile, but this may be partially alleviated in the near term after parliament selects the prime minister. If the formation of a new government drags on for several months, it will impact effective policymaking, but Fitch believes that such an outcome is unlikely to lead to major shifts in the government’s key economic development strategy. Real GDP growth is forecast at 3.75% this year and 3.8% next, up from 3.6% last year, says Fitch, as it predicts that economic prospects will be bolstered by tourism recovery from key source markets, alongside robust private consumption as the labour market recovers steadily. Exports will, however, continue to face headwinds due to lowering in global demand. A former director-general of Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (DSI), Tarit Pengdit, was escorted to Bangkok Remand Prison this evening (Monday), to serve a two-year prison sentence, after the Supreme Court upheld the Appeals Court’s sentence. The Supreme Court’s decision was read by the Criminal Court after the former dismissed all the petitions lodged by Tarit, one of which sought a ruling from the Charter Court on the constitutionality of Sections 157 and 200 of the Criminal Code, apparently, in a last-minute attempt to delay the reading of the Supreme Court’s verdict further. After the Supreme Court’s dismissal of Tarit’s petition, the Criminal Court finally read the Supreme Court decision, which upheld the Appeals Court’s sentencing of Tarit on charges of malfeasance in judicial office. #news Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/former-dsi-director-general-tarit-sentenced-to-two-years-in-prison-by-supreme-court/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation will revoke, if charged, the right to live in a conserved forest for eight settlers, after they were caught allegedly logging illegally in Phupan National Park in Kud Bak district of Thailand’s north-eastern province of Sakhon Nakhon. Officials from the department have seized 17 logs of the precious Padauk tree (Pterocarpus macrocarpus) from the eight suspects, plus a crane, a six-wheel truck and a ten-wheel truck. According to Atthaphon Charoenchansa, the department chief, the eight suspects are among settlers who were allowed to live in conserved forests on the condition that they must not cut any naturally-grown trees, especially precious trees, or their settlement rights would be revoked. #news Full Story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/eight-alleged-illegal-loggers-could-have-their-settlement-rights-revoked/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. An escalating spat over alleged sexual molestation at a massage parlour in Chiang Mai‘s Wualai district has taken a new twist. The accused masseuse, along with the owner of the establishment, retaliated, filing a police complaint against the young male client and the creator of the Facebook post that spurred the initial allegation. They claim the online account was a distortion of the actual events, causing damage to their business reputation. On July 7, a post appeared on Facebook stating that a young man had been sexually assaulted by a transgender masseuse while availing of a traditional Thai massage. The client, according to the post, took offence and responded by kicking the masseuse in the face. The post claimed the massage owner had refused to accept responsibility, instead advising the complainant to report the matter to the police. The report hinged mainly on the accusation of molestation as the massage parlour lacked CCTV cameras to provide concrete evidence. In addition, the supposed victim had sought damage compensation amounting to 1,000 baht (US$28). Following a media report, the incident garnered significant public attention. Addressing the situation today, the 38 year old masseuse Piphat and the spa owner presented themselves to the Chiang Mai City Police investigators. They lodged a report against the page owner and the young man behind the disputed Facebook story, claiming that it distorted the truth, resulting in loss and damage to their reputation, reported KhaoSod. The girlfriend of the Thai man allegedly sexually harassed by a transwoman said the masseuse was warned twice for her inappropriate behaviour towards her boyfriend before he took action at a massage parlour in Chiang Mai. The accused transwoman insisted on her innocence and complained that the man physically attacked her without a reason. The Thai man’s girlfriend offered a different story of events on social media. She issued a warning to others to be cautious. She said… “My boyfriend and I decided to revisit this massage shop because we were impressed by their service during our first visit. This time, only my boyfriend received the service, while I waited for him. The masseuse who attended to him was a transwoman. She asked my boyfriend to undress and began the session. “Thirty minutes later, I heard my boyfriend shouting out loud that he was being harassed. He was harassed by her three times. He warned her twice but she did not stop. The transwoman even tried to give my boyfriend a hand job. When we informed the staff about these acts, they did nothing to address the situation. They simply asked us to leave, saying, ‘No more service, okay?'” The woman disclosed that her boyfriend physically attacked the transwoman due to anger. The transwoman later admitted to the sexual harassment. She recorded her confession and then filed a complaint with the police. The massage shop did not have any security cameras, so the voice recording is the only evidence. In a shocking occurrence, a Thai landlord experienced an unexpected surge in electricity bills after his property was rented by a group of Chinese occupants. His rented-out townhouse, featuring three air conditioning units running non-stop with windows firmly shut to prevent daylight from entering, eventually led to a drastic transformation of the rental property. It all started when Vorravit Kaveewat, the property owner, shared a video on TikTok revealing the unusual state of his house post-rental, the key point being his electricity bill rocketing to a staggering 30,000 baht (US$853) per month. Last January, Vorravit leased his parents’ four-storey townhouse to three Chinese individuals, who were around 30 years old, via a Thai woman acting as their representative. The agreed-upon rent was 15,000 baht (US$426) for a six-month lease period. It was during the second month when he began to notice a gradual increase in electricity charges, from an initial 5,000 baht suddenly leaping to 15,000 baht, and then soaring to a whopping 30,000 baht in the final three months. However, despite the suspicious electricity consumption, the tenants paid their bills regularly without any arrears. When Vorravit proposed an electricity checkup due to the unusually high charges, the tenants declined, assuring him not to worry. Later on, Vorravit was informed by his tenants about their decision to vacate the property by early July.
