  6. United Thai Nation party has no intention to nominate its leader to compete for the premiership, said the party’s secretary general Akanat Promphan on Thursday. He dismissed as groundless the rumours in some media that the party wishes to compete with the Move Forward party for the premiership, by nominating Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, who is the party’s prime ministerial candidate. “The party has only 36 MPs, so it could not be at the core in forming the government and it does not support a minority government, which would make administration difficult,” Akanat said. The unfortunate event last night unfolded when a family dispute over dinner escalated into deadly violence, taking the lives of a woman, her daughter, and their son-in-law. The family dispute culminated in a reported shooting incident within a resident’s home at Nong Waeng Tor located in Khum Chard district, Nong Song Hong, Khon Kaen. The victims were identified as 52 year old Sathaporn, 47 year old, Gaysorn, the homeowner’s daughter and Sathaporn’s wife, and 71 year old Hong, who was inundated with gunshot injuries. Medical officers tried to save Hong’s life en route to the hospital but were unsuccessful. As the investigation continued, the reporter went to the incident scene, where the villagers and the relatives of the victims had assembled along with the bodies of Gaysorn and Hong, preparing for funeral rites. Among those present was Sa, a 64 year old relative of the deceased. He revealed that Sathaporn had a history of violence, and despite Gaysorn’s attempts to modify his behaviour, Sathaporn remained unchanged. In a separate account, 74 year old Nu, the father in law of the assailant, recalled that Sathaporn, who had been living with his daughter for four to five years, had a fiery temper and was also possessive. Whenever his daughter’s family or friends came to visit, there often sparked an altercation between the couple. When the quarrels escalated, Sathaporn would brandish a .38 calibre pistol, leading to fear among the household members reported KhaoSod. 14. A British student is fighting for his life in hospital after a harrowing fall from a hotel balcony in Thailand. The 21 year old Teesside University student is unconscious in a Thai hospital suffering from major internal and external injuries following a plunge from a balcony in Chiang Mai. Jack Heathcock had been on what his sister Chloe described as a ‘dream backpacking adventure’ around Thailand with two friends when the unfortunate incident occurred on June 17. The nursing student was due to return to Middlesbrough in the North-East of England on June 19 but he fell from a third storey balcony in the northern Thailand city of Chiang Mai, where he is now fighting for his life. Heathcock was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries to address damage to his spleen, liver, and kidneys, as well as injuries including a lung bleed, brain trauma, and fractures to his neck and pelvis. Despite the passage of more than two weeks, the British student remains in critical condition, and his family is desperately seeking a way to bring him back home, reported the Teesside Gazette. Upon receiving news of the accident from their son’s friend, Jack’s parents, Ian and Joy Heathcock, wasted no time and flew to Thailand to be by his side. Although Jack had travel insurance, the family claims that the insurance company is refusing to cover the costs associated with his treatment. 16. In a show of justice for tourists in Phuket, a 47 year old van driver who verbally abused a tourist last Sunday has been legally reprimanded. The driver was imposed with a fine of 1,000 baht by the local court for frightening others with the use of threat (intimidation). In an online statement, Phuket Provincial Police revealed that the driver, Poramet, met his charge of causing terror by threats head-on and confessed in court. According to Section 78 of the Criminal Code, as relayed by the police, his straightforward confession helped him cut his sentence by half. However, it remains unclear whether the fine of 1,000 baht was imposed before or after this reduction in his punishment. Interestingly, the police did not refer to Poramet by his name in their official statement, but simply as “Mr Boy,” claiming this was an intentional measure to avoid revealing his identity. The police statement reveals that Poramet had a verbal spat tussle with Faris Bin Abdulkadir, a 35 year old Singaporean tourist, on the bustling Ratsada Road in Phuket Town last Sunday. This altercation took place in front of a local coffee shop, reported The Phuket News. Abdulkadir was travelling with 10 other passengers from the Pack-Up Hotel in Krabi to Phuket in Poramet’s van. Requesting a drop-off at the Grand Supicha City Hotel, where he had secured a reservation, Abdulkadir was met with Poramet’s refusal. 20. Chon Buri Police and the Victims’ Crime Aid Society president, Achariya Ruangratanapong, lodged a formal complaint at the Attorney General’s Office calling for a joint investigation into a 140 million baht extortion gambling case. The plea was made today, alleging that several officers unfairly faced accusations in the scandal. Achariya highlighted that several police officers, innocently implicated, have been summoned to hear the web gambling charges at the police club. He wants Pol. Lt. Gen. Surachate ‘Big Joke’ Hakparn, deputy chief of the Royal Thai Police, to ensure justice – especially for those officers not involved in any wrongdoing. During the alleged web gambling extortion, police lieutenant Somboon Buddalert received orders to assist with the search on the day of the arrest. He was asked to read an arrest warrant to the suspects at a house in the Khan Na Yao district and transfer them to the Chon Buri police. He denies any awareness of the 140 million baht web gambling extortion and reportedly remained uninformed until he faced four instant charges brought to him at the police club. The issue of justice is contentious in the light of these accusations. In a coordinated operation, government forces succeeded in fatally shooting an armed militant and detaining a woman. The unfortunate loss of a local official, who was involved in peaceful negotiations, also transpired amidst the crossfire. The incident took place in the Khok Pho district. The event occurred as a government force made up of 50 officers moved in on a residence in Khuan Lamae, a village in the Na Ket sub-district, at around 2am yesterday. Acting upon information that suspected militants involved in the recent death of a local police officer were holed up in this dwelling, the force took tactical action. A bloody battle incident followed as gunshots were hailed from the house, dreadfully causing the death of Armakosee Hayeeloh, the assistant village chief. In an attempt to peacefully resolve the matter, the authorities had involved local leaders, including Armakosee, to encourage the house inhabitants to peacefully surrender. This approach, however, was met with gunfire that led to Armakosee’s unfortunate demise.
