  1. Nakhonping Hospital, situated in the northern province of Chiang Mai, recently issued a warning to men seeking penis enlargement treatments following a distressing incident involving a Burmese man who resorted to using a steel ring in hopes of increasing his size. In a Facebook post shared by the hospital today, it was revealed that a 29 year old Burmese man had placed a steel ring around the base of his penis for a week, believing it would result in enlargement. Unfortunately, this ill-advised action led to undesirable consequences. The man’s private organ became discoloured and swollen, and the area around the ring developed into an infected wound, filled with pus. Unable to remove the ring due to the swelling, the man sought immediate medical attention at Nakhonping Hospital. Fortunately, a skilled urological surgeon named Praphon Piamanan successfully removed the ring by carefully cutting it. The patient is currently under hospital care and is expected to remain there for several days to allow the wound to heal properly. Praphon expressed grave concern about the prevalent myths surrounding penis enlargement methods. He emphasized that wearing a ring or employing various tools and medicines for this purpose can have severe consequences, such as permanent loss of sexual function, tissue death (necrosis), or infection due to inadequate blood circulation. In extreme cases, amputation may become necessary. The event was presided over by Phuket Vice Governor Amnuay Pinsuwan and attended by Wissanu Jaengjai, Director of the Region 10 Office of Marine and Coastal Resources, Sanakorn Kisin, Deputy Mayor of Patong, and representatives from various sectors. The concept of World Ocean Day was initiated in 1992 by Canada’s International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada. The United Nations officially recognised the event in 2008, and it has been celebrated worldwide on June 8 ever since. This year’s theme was “Planet Ocean: Tides are changing,” The Phuket News reported. Wissanu encouraged people in Phuket and around the world to mark the day and commit to a more responsible and sustainable approach to protecting oceans and their inhabitants, including sharks, sea turtles, ecosystems, and corals. He added that this approach aligns with the central government’s policy and the commitment of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to addressing the degradation of ecosystems and the marine environment in a sustainable manner. The random inspections were conducted on five boats and aimed to ensure workers’ rights were being upheld, with checks on employment and working conditions, valid working permits, and wages being paid in the appropriate manner. The chief of Phuket Provincial Labour and Welfare Office, Thanapong Orachon, stated, “Apart from protecting the workers in the local fishing industry, the mission also aims to build trust within the international fishing industry to enable Thailand to be promoted to Tier 1 in the ranks.” Officials also checked for any signs of illegal fishing activities that could contravene fishing laws. Sittipon Muangsong, the chief of the Phuket Provincial Fishery Office, emphasised the importance of the inspections in protecting against any form of illegal activities that would fall foul of fishing laws. The team carried out checks on the boats to ensure no prohibited tools or machinery was being used while making sure all boats were operating under legal and valid permits. 13. The Highway Police Division’s acting commissioner transferred 42 of the department’s officers involved in the easy pass sticker scandal to the Royal Thai Police Operations Centre in the southern province of Yala. The identities of each officer have not been revealed. The easy pass sticker scandal was uncovered by Move Forward Party (MFP) MP Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn at the beginning of this month. Wiroj made known that several logistic companies and drivers placed special stickers on their overloaded trucks to obtain a special pass. To acquire these stickers, the drivers or their respective companies were required to pay bribes as requested by certain police officers within the Highway Police Division and other relevant departments. The design of the stickers and the amount of the bribe varied depending on the region and the type of delivery service. Yesterday afternoon, Wiroj and the President of the Land Transport Federation of Thailand visited the Royal Thai Police (RTP) Headquarters to submit evidence on the issue to the Inspector General’s office to facilitate a police investigation. Wiroj spoke to the media yesterday and said that he did not want officers to focus on the logistic companies or truck drivers as they were not the root cause of the issue. 15. The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is weighing the potential regulation of over-the-top (OTT) platforms in Thailand to create a level playing field and ensure equal treatment in the telecom sector. Despite major foreign OTT platform providers having established operations offices in Thailand and adhering to value-added tax (VAT) payment rules, the regulator is contemplating whether these operators should pay additional fees to benefit the country’s economy. NBTC chairman Dr Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck indicated that the regulator may explore a regulatory framework for OTT players’ use of local telecom operators’ networks, particularly mobile phone operators. However, he emphasised that the framework would need careful implementation and require extensive discussion and active participation from relevant stakeholders, including the government, the regulator, network providers, OTT service providers, and consumers. “It’s too early to elaborate exactly when and how it would be implemented,” Dr Sarana said. Popular OTT platforms in Thailand include YouTube, Facebook, TikTok, and Line. The content on these platforms is regulated by the Computer Crime Act, under the Digital Economy and Society and Ministry. Dr Sarana noted that Thai consumers’ heavy use of digital platforms drives the continuous development of these platforms. 17. At the bustling Sri Mueang Market in Thailand’s Ratchaburi Province, 51 year old Sorawat Leuang-ngamkham has found a unique way to attract customers and boost sales of his fruits and vegetables. He dances and shucks coconuts dressed in vibrant colours, providing a lively and eye-catching scene for passersby. When visiting the market, one can’t help but notice Sorawat displaying his dancing skills while peeling aromatic coconuts. His moves resemble a gymnast’s performance, as he tosses coconuts in the air with his hands and elbows, impressing the crowd. Initially from Sai Yok district, Kanchanaburi Province, Sorawat was a barber before he met his wife and moved to Ratchaburi to sell produce. Bringing fruits and vegetables grown in his own garden or from neighbours, such as limes, kaffir limes, Thai basil, holy basil, bananas, and aromatic coconuts, Sorawat transports them using a motorcycle sidecar to Si Mueang Market. With a music system installed on the sidecar, Sorawat is able to dance along to the beats in between sales, which has increased his customer base. Many regulars support him by purchasing several coconuts simultaneously, with the condition that he dances for them first. 19. A chilling incident occurred on Bang Pakong Bridge in Thailand’s Chachoengsao province, as a 23 year old man, known as A (pseudonym), claimed to have leapt into the Bang Pakong River at the request of mysterious male and female voices in his head. Upon doing so, he found himself in a struggle for survival when, according to him, several unseen hands attempted to pull him under the water today. Upon receiving a report of a man intending to jump into the river, officers from the Bang Pakong Police Station arrived at the scene. They found a parked motorcycle, white canvas shoes, long trousers, and a plastic water bottle with a small amount of water on the footpath. While investigating, A emerged soaked from beneath the bridge. He revealed that he had jumped into the river to swim with male and female friends he believed were there, due to the persistent voices in his head. He confirmed that he journeyed from his home in Bang Sao Thong, Samut Prakan, following the voices. A recounted that before jumping into the Bang Pakong river, he drank some water from the bottle, removed his shoes and trousers, and placed his ID card on his motorcycle. Upon hearing a female voice instructing him to jump, he did so. He said that after landing in the water, he felt numerous mysterious hands attempting to drag him under. In desperation, he silently screamed for help, believing his life was in peril. During his struggle, he heard alternating male and female voices, one saying “You have to die here”, while the other demanded his rescue. Eventually, he managed to surface and saw a woman in white standing on the Bang Pakong bridge. He felt as though he was being helped to swim ashore safely, grabbed hold of the bridge and returned to his parked motorcycle. 21. A tragic fire in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province claimed the life of a 76 year old Thai woman, leaving her husband heartbroken. The fire, which broke out at their wooden house today at 9.30am, destroyed the entire building and reportedly engulfed an estimated 20 baht of gold. The incident occurred at a high-stilt wooden house in Bang Sai district’s Sanam Chai sub-district. Driven by strong winds, the fire spread rapidly, and emergency personnel spent over an hour trying to control the blaze. The deceased, Thongthung (a pseudonym), was found in her bedroom. Her husband, 85 year old Sam-ang, was inconsolable and unable to locate his wife amidst the chaos. Sam-ang recounted that he had crossed the river to visit the bank that morning. While he was away, he received a call informing him about the fire at their house. He rushed back to find the house engulfed in flames, concerned for his wife who had difficulty walking due to knee surgery. Neighbouring residents attempted to assist the couple during the fire, with some trying to retrieve the trapped woman inside the house. However, the intensity of the blaze prevented anyone from successfully entering. Some locals reported hearing a noise similar to an electrical short circuit before the fire started. 23. Dispute between students escalates as one mother assaults another student outside school, demanding compensation and causing psychological distress for the girl involved; the school expels both students. Recently, a Thai mother assaulted a teenage girl outside a secondary school in Samut Sakhon, hitting her with a bag, after the girls resolved their dispute in May. The mother demanded 20,000 baht (US$580) in compensation, but police negotiations reduced the amount to 2,000 baht (US$58). The incident occurred when the mother discovered the argument between the two students on one girl’s Facebook page. Yesterday morning, the mother confronted the girl outside the school, accompanied by five others. Following the attack, the victim and her mother reported the incident to Bang Nam Chuet police station. The school subsequently dismissed both students, although they had already reconciled and agreed to put aside past issues.
