  4. BANGKOK (NNT) - Two Japan-based data center providers have made substantial investments totaling $164 million (5.5 billion baht) in Thailand to capitalize on the increasing demand for digital transformation and cloud computing. According to a report, Telehouse has recently opened its first data center in Thailand with an investment of $74 million, while NTT Global Data Centers Corporation has invested 3 billion baht to develop its largest data center in Thailand, which is set to begin operations in the second half of 2024. Thailand has become an attractive destination for global cloud and data center providers looking to expand their presence. Companies such as Tencent Cloud, Huawei, NTT, Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud have already invested in the country. Telehouse’s new data center in Bangkok aims to be an internet hub where multiple telecommunication carriers and service providers can interconnect and exchange data traffic domestically and internationally. With over 10 partners, the facility supports the ecosystem of "interconnection" in the data center. NTT’s investment will result in the development of a significant data center named BKK3. Located in the Amata City Chonburi industrial estate on the Eastern Economic Corridor, BKK3 will provide a maximum IT capacity of 12 megawatts across approximately 4,000 square meters of IT space. The infrastructure will cater to hyperscalers and enterprises, contributing to Thailand’s digital economy growth. The new data centers are also part of NTT Group’s "Green Innovation" vision, focusing on achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. They will adopt sustainable practices and green energy to support Thailand’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. 14. An elderly former temple abbot, who is 78 years old, is accused of sexually assaulting a 16 year old girl and threatening to destroy her family’s home within the temple grounds. The girl’s brother secretly recorded the abbot’s behaviour and handed the evidence to the police, leading to the abbot’s suspension. Today, a 25 year old man identified as ‘A’, and his 16 year old sister, ‘B’, reported the incident to Thai media, along with the video evidence. The abbot’s alleged abuse took place almost every day for over three months at a temple in Ayutthaya province. B stated that she lived with her family within the temple’s area where they sold lottery tickets for a living. The incidents started in April when the abbot phoned to buy lottery tickets late at night. After buying the tickets, he refused to pay, sexually assaulted the girl, and then threatened her not to tell anyone. The abuse continued with the abbot threatening to demolish her family’s home if B did not visit him at his residence within the temple grounds. The girl complied due to fear for her family’s shelter. The girl eventually confided in her brother, who reported the incident to the police. Despite the suspension, the abbot persisted in threatening B and her brother. His ex-wife, sister, and daughter, visited last-minute and left without paying the bills, even though they are reportedly wealthy. Beer, a friend of the deceased’s sister, learned about Hendrikus’s illness on May 29. He took a taxi to visit her house in the Prachachuen area and shared the news. Hendrikus had symptoms similar to flu, prompting Beer and her sister to take him to the hospital. She initially paid around 100,000 baht for the medical expenses. Beer decided to pay for Hendrikus’ hospital bill using her credit card with an amount of 60,000 baht. According to her, the deceased assured them that his wealthy relatives in the Netherlands would take care of the costs. On June 2, Hendrikus’s family visited him in the hospital, and he passed away the next day. When Beer contacted them for reimbursement, they refused to help, claiming it wasn’t their responsibility and that they planned to return to the Netherlands soon. The Indonesian Industry Minister, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, stated yesterday that Isuzu could potentially commence production in Indonesia as early as next year. 22. A new effective and accurate diagnostic kit has been developed to screen for early-stage kidney disease, with a correctness rate of 94%, a sensitivity rate of 96%, and a specificity rate of 97.8%. This screening method has been approved by the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and has been proposed for inclusion in the gold card scheme to make it more accessible to the public. Dr. Nattachai Srisawat, a researcher at the Chulalongkorn University Faculty of Medicine, mentioned that data reported by the Ministry of Public Health in 2021 showed a total of 1,007,251 chronic kidney disease patients, with the number continually rising. The increase is attributed to poor eating habits and consumption of medication for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes and high blood pressure. According to Dr. Nattachai, the early stages of chronic kidney disease often show no symptoms. Current screening methods require patients to visit hospitals despite the short testing time, resulting in travel expenses and inconvenience, especially for those living in remote areas. The research team developed a screening kit to detect albuminuria, which indicates the onset of chronic kidney disease, with financial support from the Health Systems Research Institute (HSRI). The study involved 2,313 volunteers aged 60 years or older with diabetes or high blood pressure, reported Khaosod. 24. An investigation is underway by Thailand’s Excise Department into allegations that a high-level official attempted to persuade police to release a truck carrying 15,000 litres of smuggled oil. The department’s Deputy Director-General Kriangkrai Pattanaporn revealed that a probe committee was formed to look into the arrest of the 47 year old driver, identified only as Sombat, in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Initial findings showed that the truck was indeed transporting smuggled oil. Reports indicate that anti-corruption police and excise officials intercepted the vehicle on Phetkasem Highway in Tambon Koh Lak in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, while it was heading towards the Central Plains. Following the arrest, a high-level official from the Excise Department allegedly contacted the police at the scene, attempting to secure the release of the truck and its driver. However, the police refused the request. Kriangkrai stated that the Excise Department and Anti-Corruption Division police are jointly conducting the investigation. “If evidence implicates a high-level executive, the department will verify it and take disciplinary action without any leniency,” he said.
