  2. Officials in Thailand’s Rayong province led a raid on a house in the Ban Khai district, arresting a notorious drug dealer and discovering 813 methamphetamine pills (Yaba) hidden under the roof. The suspect claimed the drugs belonged to a friend, but previous records showed his involvement in drug dealing. Authorities aim to eliminate the drug trade in the region. Officers in Rayong conducted a raid on a single-storey concrete house in Ban Khai district, acting on a tip-off about a drug dealer supplying Yaba to local youth. Upon arrival at the targeted house in Nong Lalok village, they found Teera (full name withheld), a 34 year old man, who appeared nervous as law enforcement officers approached him. Teera was arrested following a search of the premises, which uncovered 813 methamphetamine pills stashed under the roof of the house. The case and the evidence were brought to Ban Khai police station for further investigation. During questioning, Theera claimed that all the seized pills belonged to his friend, identified as Ta, who had asked him to keep them at his house. Consequently, he hid the drugs under the roof. However, as the man had a history of drug dealing within the community, authorities decided to proceed with charges against him according to the law, while preparing to expand their investigation and apprehend Ta. 4. Five former Chiang Mai bank employees, including a former manager, have been accused of forging signatures to embezzle 70 million baht from the San Pa Tong Agricultural Cooperative. The cooperative has had to use reserve funds to pay dividends to its members following the alleged fraud. Chaiwiset Deesuwan, Chairman of the San Pa Tong Agricultural Cooperative Board, and Suchitra Mano, Cooperative Manager, reported the progress of the case at a recent board meeting. Preliminary investigations revealed that no farm cooperative employees were involved in the alleged fraud. Police have issued arrest warrants for a woman known as “A” (a pseudonym), who falsely claimed to be a bank manager, and four other former bank employees connected to the crime. It is reported that the accused individuals persuaded the cooperative board to deposit a large sum of money in a particular bank branch in Chiang Mai, offering high-interest rates as an incentive. The cooperative officials deposited 20 million baht initially and eventually added a total of 70 million baht to the account. However, funds began to disappear in February 2021, with only 9,000 baht remaining in the account by September 30, 2022. Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, Chinese tourists were the largest foreign group arriving in Thailand, accounting for around 20% of visitors (in some tourist areas, more). Thapanee Kiatphaiboon from the TAT says Thailand is targeting at least 25 million for the remainder of the year and remains hopeful that there could be a surge in the last 3 months of 2023. “The biggest uncertainty is how quickly the China market could bounce back before the long holiday of October 1 (China’s National Day). If it does, then Chinese tourists could boost foreign arrivals, and we could see up to 28 – 30 million visitors by year-end.” By Peter Roche Top photo caption: Flickr/Dawn in Phuket, Thailand Full Story: https://phuket-go.com/phuket-news/national-news/thailand-says-foreign-arrivals-could-reach-30-million-this-year-if-chinese-return/ -- © Copyright Phuket GO 2023-06-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The 4.2-kilometer road will aid in the expansion of tourism and transit between the two provinces. The completion of the Na Klang-Ao Jik, or 1042 rural road, has been announced by the Department of Rural Roads (DRR). 15. Worrisome “media shares” rulings in recent past While Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat has taken certain actions regarding the iTV share controversy, history is not on his side. 16. While Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat has taken certain actions regarding the iTV share controversy, history is not on his side. Some media reports have dug up similar cases that seemed inconsequential at first but eventually cost election candidates their parliamentary future. Let’s forget Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit for a minute, although his case should be Pita’s biggest worry. When Future Forward (now Move Forward) submitted its list of party-list candidates to the Election Commission in 2019, it included the name of Thanwarin Sukhapisit, a filmmaker-turned-politician. The candidate held shares in two companies _ Head Up Production and I’m Fine Production. In its ruling that disqualified the MP, the Constitution Court said it looked primarily at two questions _ Were the firms “active” when the candidacy was registered? And if so, did the affected person own their shares on the electoral application day? Thanwarin’s “ownership” seemed more straightforward than Pita’s possession of iTV shares, which he said were under his name only because he was the executor of his father’s will. Pita, who did not list the iTV stocks in his compulsory assets reportto the authorities, has transferred out the questionable shares, but what the Constitutional Court looked at in Thanwarin’s case, the date of the electoral application, might suggest that late transfer was irrelevant. Now, Thanathorn. What does his case tell us? Thanwarin’s case went somewhat under the radar, probably because Future Forward leader Thanathornhad earlier been disqualified as an MP in the V-Luck Media share uproar. V-Luck Media was not involved in controversial content, but the Thanathorn ruling reminded many of legal precedents which show that the judges give considerable importance to what may happen “in the future.” There are cases that may look stronger than Pita’s because they involved full or larger “ownership”, but the Supreme Court’s opinion on “inactivity” is remarkable. One such case had to do with Chat Pattana’sconstituency candidate Anusorn Kasemwan. Before 2019, he reportedly owned a printing company that issued a little-known newspaper _ Sue Klang SaphaThai _ which he insisted had stopped printing for two years when he sought candidacy registration. In an appeal to the Supreme Court against the Election Commission which had ruled against his election candidacy application, he said his ownership must have ended according to the printing law. The Supreme Court, in killing the appeal, ruled that unilateral end of printing (without related authorities being officially notified) meant the “ownership” remained. You know?” Ae explained to the media that Pin came to her shop to buy alcohol after closing hours but she decided to sell it to him. 21. PHUKET (NNT) - Phuket entrepreneurs are set to present six proposals to the Move Forward Party, in a bid to further boost the tourism industry in the province. Phuket Tourist Association Chairman Thanet Tantipiriyakit said the proposed measures include revamping the public transport system, prioritizing tourism as a key economic driver, increasing international flights, ensuring clarity in government support, and maintaining a balanced approach to international relationships. Phuket entrepreneurs have proposed measures to address issues plaguing the public transport system, including problems with taxi services such as inflated prices for foreign tourists and passenger refusal. They also emphasize the need to prioritize the tourism industry by increasing funding for tourism-related organizations and implementing effective promotional campaigns. The group further highlights the importance of enhancing international flights and revitalizing Thai Airways International to meet the demands of post-Covid-era tourists. Additionally, they stress the necessity for clear government support in areas such as the environment, energy, and clean energy costs to enable informed decision-making and promote sustainable practices. The association also calls for maintaining a balanced approach to international relationships, recognizing its direct impact on the tourism industry and the potential for positive collaborations with various countries. The Phuket Tourist Association estimates that this year’s visitor numbers will reach approximately 60-70% of the 2019 figures, with corresponding tourism revenue rising to 70-80% of the 2019 amount. The association predicts a decline in hotel occupancy rates during the low season, estimating an average rate of 65-70% due to the ongoing effects of the pandemic and the slower recovery of major markets like China. 23. Heavy rainfall and strong winds have led to high waves of around 3 metres along Trang coast, prompting officials at Chao Mai National Park to erect red flags barring tourists from swimming in the affected areas. The ban has been imposed on Pak Meng Beach, Chao Mai Beach and Yao Beach, leaving visitors to explore safer alternatives. During the past three days, the Trang coastal area, which encompasses Chao Mai National Park, Pak Meng Beach, Yao Beach and numerous islands, has faced adverse weather. Heavy rainfall and strong winds have generated around three-metre high waves, making it impossible for tourists to swim or catch marine animals. For safety reasons, small fishing boats have also been forced to remain ashore. In response to this situation, Chao Mai National Park officials have announced a ban on swimming along these coastal areas, from Pak Meng Beach to Chao Mai Beach and Yao Beach. Although park shops and businesses remain open to serve tourists, the atmosphere is much quieter as visitors are unable to undertake their usual water-based activities.
