BANGKOK (NNT) - The Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) plans to develop Suvarnabhumi International Airport into the first environmentally friendly, or "Green" airport in Thailand, with the goal to create renewable energy for airport use to reduce electricity costs by around 20-30 percent per year. AOT Chief Executive Officer Kirati Kitmanawat disclosed the progress on a plan to generate renewable energy within the airport to alleviate the financial load from its electricity bills. He stated that solar panels have already been installed on the roof of the airport’s main terminal, with officials looking to add photovoltaic energy to further cut the airport’s power bills, similar to major airports in other countries. In addition, AOT plans to switch the airport’s transportation to electric vehicles once the current vehicle rental contract expires. Public transportation vehicles providing service at the airport will also be urged to switch to electric vehicles as well. The AOT CEO expects the airport to fully rely on solar panels and renewable energy in around four years. If the Suvarnabhumi project is successful, the AOT plans to manage the transition to solar and renewable energy at other airports under its supervision. Photo via Facebook/ ชนะภัย น้าหมาน ข่าวข้าราชการ แสงทองจรัส Police swooped on a massage parlour in the northern province of Tak after a tip-off on underage sex trafficking. The owner of the parlour was arrested and two teenage Burmese girls were rescued. The Anti Trafficking In Persons Division Police (ATPD) received a tip-off that a Thai woman, 40 year old Suphaporn Makaew, was operating an underage sex trafficking racket behind her massage business. To verify the information, an undercover police officer posed as a customer as he visited the massage parlour, located on the Mae Sot-Umphang Road in the Mae Sot district of Tak. Supaporn offered sexual services to the officer, explaining that two Burmese girls, aged 16 and 17, were available for 1,500 baht each. She added that he could take the girls out of the shop to a hotel or house and request both a massage and sex service. The officer then revealed his identity and arrested Supaporn. The two Burmese girls are considered the victims and are now under the care of the Department of Children and Youth. Supaporn confessed to the crime, admitting that she gave the girls 1,000 baht and kept 500 baht for herself. Supaporn faced five charges including: Section 52 of the Anti-Trafficking in Person Act: committing an offence of trafficking a child aged over 15 years old but not yet 18 years old. The penalty will be imprisonment from six years to 12 years and a fine from 120,000 baht to 240,000 baht. Vitoon, former deputy superintendent of Ban Pong district police in Ratchaburi province, is facing charges of embezzlement, fraud and falsification of documents. He has confessed to all the charges against him, but has told police interrogators that Sararat had engaged in some “grey” business while they were together. They have remained in contact because they have to look after two children, he said. Latest reports say that the Nakhon Pathom Provincial Court released Vitoon today (Thursday) on 100,000 baht bail, on the condition that he must not interfere with the cyanide poisoning investigations. Today’s King of Thailand’s Coronation Day commemoration shouldn’t be confused with the Coronation of King Charles III this weekend in the UK (which their Majesties will be attending). The Thai government added an additional public holiday tomorrow which makes a full 4-day long weekend. The four-day holiday will be marked by a 24-hour sales ban on alcohol across the country starting from 6pm on Saturday, May 6, until 6pm on Sunday, May 7, in accordance with Thai election laws. This ban will also be enforced during the actual election weekend next week – starting from 6pm on Saturday, May 13, until 6pm on Sunday, May 14. All of Phuket is included in the ban. Nightlife venues and bars will be closed, and sales of alcohol will be prohibited, even in convenience stores. While restaurants will remain open, they will not be allowed to serve alcohol (but you all know where you can find a sneaky drink if you absolutely need to). Will passing Progressive Liquor Bill help small producers and consumers? Thailand not only ranks first in the alcoholic beverage market in South East Asia, but is also the first among ASEAN countries with highest consumption per capita, at 8.3 litres/year. Even though there are numerous brands of alcohol on the supermarket shelves and annual sales are 300 billion baht, 93% of the brands are owned by few giant corporations, namely Boon Rawd Breweries (Leo, Singha), Thai Beverage (Chang, Archa) and Thai Asia Pacific Breweries (Tiger, Cheers). Other smaller local producers and imported beer account for a less than 1% market share. He disclosed that passengers are worried about the congestion at check-in, with some arriving at the airport up to seven hours in advance, but check-in counters for most airlines only open three hours in advance of departure, resulting in congestion. Congestion is also caused by only 18 airlines having automated check-in services and the requirement that passengers display RT-PCR test results to enter some countries, said Kirati, adding that the AOT has set a target to increase automated check-in services this year, so more passengers will use the option to reduce congestion. Other smaller local producers and imported beer account for a less than 1% market share. Under the current law, the home brewing of alcohol is restricted and small to medium size alcohol producers are not able to obtain a license, since the Ministry of Finance requires 10 million baht capital and a production of 100,000 to one million litres per year in order to get a license. The “Progressive Liquor Act”, a draft proposed by the Move Forward Party is aimed at amending section 153 of the excise tax law of 2017, which requires alcohol producers to register for a license under some strict exceptions and high-cost criteria. The regulation has been criticised for favouring large corporate producers and hindering small to medium size producers from entering the market. The proposed amendments would reduce the criteria, so that small and medium size businesses can enter the market, allow home brewing for household consumption and allow unlicensed distilling of alcohol. The founder of the Beer People Group, who advocates for the bill, Thanakorn Tuamsahgeam, stated that the purpose of amending the law is to provide consumers with more choice and to distribute 10-20% of the market share (up to 60 billion baht) to small producers.
