BOT Expected to Raise Policy Rate BANGKOK (NNT) - Economists are anticipating that the Bank of Thailand (BOT) will raise its policy rate to 2% this month, following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s recent peak in its funds rate. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1294331-bot-expected-to-raise-policy-rate/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - Economists are anticipating that the Bank of Thailand (BOT) will raise its policy rate to 2% this month, following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s recent peak in its funds rate. TMBThanachart Bank’s research center predicts that the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will raise the policy benchmark rate by 0.25 percentage points at the meeting on May 31. After this, the central bank is expected to maintain the rate for the rest of the year to focus on financial stability amid global uncertainties and high inflation rates. Core inflation is forecasted to reach 101.5%, with headline inflation at 2.3%. The U.S. Federal Reserve’s recent quarter-point rate increase is expected to impact the movement of the Thai baht against the U.S. dollar. The Kasikorn Research Center also predicts a 0.25 percentage point increase in Thailand’s benchmark rate this month, after which the central bank will monitor the global economy. It will also watch for increased risks for the U.S. financial industry before deciding on further policy rate movements. Standard Chartered Bank meanwhile forecasts a 0.25 percentage point hike, which it considers the terminal point for this interest rate cycle. Despite global uncertainties, Thailand’s strong economic indicators and the BOT’s positive outlook for the economy are expected to support the continued normalization of the policy rate in an effort to build policy space. Customs Dept to Deploy Dogs to Help Detect Illicit Narcotics BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Customs Department has announced the adoption of sniffer dogs to detect narcotic drugs hidden in imported and exported goods, adding that its practices have been upgraded to meet international standards. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Thai Customs Department has announced the adoption of sniffer dogs to detect narcotic drugs hidden in imported and exported goods, adding that its practices have been upgraded to meet international standards. A ceremony was held on May 8 to mark the beginning of the construction of the Thai Customs Canine Training Center in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district. International customs attaches were also present at the ceremony. According to Patchara Anuntasilpa, Director-General of the Customs Department, current technologies used to detect drugs and other illegal products have limitations, but the use of sniffer dogs in customs handling is expected to help transcend these limitations. The U.S., Japan, South Korea, and Australia are among the countries that use sniffer dogs in their customs handling and have formal dog training centers. The Customs Department has been consulting these countries on how to effectively use dogs to detect illegal products before setting up the Samut Prakan center. Currently, two customs officers are attending a training program on working with sniffer dogs at an institution certified by the KCS Detector Dog Training Center in Incheon. The construction of the canine training facility, a one-story building plus an outdoor dog-training ground situated on a two-rai plot of land, is expected to be completed by the end of next month and fully operational in August. BANGKOK (NNT) - Chinese car manufacturer SAIC Motor has started construction of a new energy industrial park in Thailand, which is expected to focus on localized production of key auto parts for the company’s new energy vehicles (NEVs). According to the carmaker, the Phase I construction of the park is estimated to be completed this year, while the complete construction of the park will be finished in 2025. The new energy park, located in Chon Buri province, will cover 120,000 square meters and boast standard workshops, a container yard, and a logistics warehouse, as well as complete facilities including drainage systems and a parking lot. Several upstream NEV core and key component enterprises have expressed their intention to settle in the industrial park in the future. As early as 2013, SAIC teamed up with Charoen Pokphand Group to found SAIC Motor-CP, a joint venture, in its bid to develop the vast ASEAN market. SAIC’s MG brand, which entered the Thai market in 2013, has become an increasingly popular brand among Thai customers. As of April, MG brand’s total sales in Thailand notched up more than 173,000 vehicles. Last year alone, SAIC Motor-CP manufactured and sold about 32,000 whole vehicles - making it one of SAIC’s major overseas production and sales bases. In 2022, SAIC saw its sales in overseas markets reach over 1 million vehicles, ranking top among Chinese carmakers for the seventh consecutive year and marking the company becoming the first domestic automaker to achieve this milestone. Thailand’s consumption of electricity surged to a new record high of 34,826.50 megawatts at 9.41pm on Saturday May 6th, breaking the previous record of 33,177.30 megawatts, set at 2.30pm on April 28th last year. The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) attributed the surge to the hot weather during the long holidays, from May 4th to 7th, forcing residential consumers to use their air conditioners, electric fans and refrigerators for longer. The ERC has urged the public to conserve energy while checking their electricity bills issued in May, to find out how much electricity they used in April and whether it was unusually high, adding that there are two possible causes of higher bills, errors in the calculation or a rise in consumption due to the hot weather. Image courtesy of Bangkok Post Thailand is keen to finalise free-trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by mid-next year, with the aim to boost trade and investment. The potential FTA between Thailand and Sri Lanka is particularly appealing due to Sri Lanka’s strategic location in South Asia, with connections to India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Furthermore, Sri Lanka’s economy is experiencing steady growth, remarked Auramon Supthaweethum, the director-general of the Department of Trade Negotiations. An FTA between Thailand and EFTA, comprising Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland, is viewed as significant for Thailand in terms of trading and sustainable development. Negotiations for such an agreement began in June last year, although previous negotiations between Thailand and EFTA occurred from 2005 to 2006 before coming to a halt. EFTA was Thailand’s 14th largest trading partner in 2022, and from 2018 to 2022, the average annual trade between Thailand and EFTA amounted to US$9.85 billion.
