BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bang Rakam Model project, now in its seventh year, has been deemed successful in providing farmers with adequate amounts of water to grow crops and boost their income. The project shifted the rice growing period to commence earlier each year in the low-lying areas of Sukhothai and Phitsanulok, reducing the impact of floods during the rainy season by allocating water to 260,000 rai of the target areas. Farmers in Kongkrailat district now receive water early each year and have purchased a straw baler that allows them to compress rice straw into bale blocks that can then be sold. This initiative, aimed at reducing the burning of rice straw and the creation of PM2.5 dust particles, generated millions of baht in cash flow for local farmers. Watermelon yields from farmers total about 80 tonnes, which are shipped in bulk by intermediaries at 10 baht per kilogram and sold by farmers at a retail price of 15 baht per kilogram. The implementation of this water management model has been acknowledged by farmers in other areas who are requesting that the Royal Irrigation Department expand its implementation area. BANGKOK (NNT) - A recent study by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce has indicated that despite tuition fees remaining unchanged, school uniforms and items are more expensive. This has led to estimated nationwide expenditures totaling 57.8 billion baht for the new term. The poll, which surveyed 1,230 respondents nationwide, found that the higher prices of some uniform items - such as shoes and socks - resulted in expenses averaging 19,500 baht per child for a 5.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019. Only 63% of the parents said they had enough money to cover these expenses - the lowest proportion in eight years since 2016. The study also revealed that most parents want free meal programs for students, the abolition of the "sticker and pin" system, the promotion of bilingual schools in all regions, and free education up to the bachelor’s degree level. The poll reflects the ongoing recovery of post-pandemic Thailand’s economy, as parents show willingness to spend more. However, Dr Thanawat Pholvichai, President of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, stressed that the recovery remains fragile and limited to specific groups. Tuition fees average 9,500 baht per child, while school maintenance fees average 2,300 baht. Textbook and learning materials costs remain largely unchanged from the previous year. Despite this, total nationwide spending is projected to exceed 57.8 billion baht – the highest in 14 years since the poll began in 2009. BANGKOK (NNT) - Spanish stock market regulator CNMV has suspended the trading of shares in NH Hotel Group SA pending information from the company, just as its Thailand-based parent company offered to buy NH stocks in the market. According to Reuters, the regulator said the suspension was a "precautionary measure" taken "while relevant information on the aforementioned entity is disseminated". Minor International, based in Bangkok, which already owns a 94% stake in NH, said in a separate statement issued after the CNMV’s announcement that it would buy outstanding shares on the Madrid stock exchange for a 30-day period at a price no higher than 4.50 euros per share. Earlier on Monday (8 May), NH published its first-quarter results but did not mention Minor’s offer. The group’s net recurring loss halved to 40 million euros from a year ago as it expected demand to remain strong in coming months. Pictures taken by a passenger on the TR605 flight showed a plume-filled cabin. The Airbus A321 departed Bangkok at 3.56pm and was due to arrive in Singapore at 7.15pm. As a result of the technical fault, the flight was forced to turn back and return to Bangkok. A Scoot spokesperson told The Straits Times… “As a safety precaution, a decision was made to return to Bangkok.” The aircraft had 230 passengers and eight crew members on board. After landing in Bangkok at 5.09pm local time, passengers were given refreshments. According to Flightradar, the Airbus A321 made at least four loops near the island of Ko Si Chang in southern Thailand before circling back to Bangkok. The aircraft later departed Suvarnabhumi Airport at 7.27pm local time after the fault was rectified and arrived in Singapore at 10.26pm. One passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the pilot had announced 30 minutes into the flight that there was a ventilation issue and they needed to turn back. The passenger said… “There was this damp smell, like something was leaking.” Full Story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/expats/scoot-flight-horror-technical-fault-sparks-panic-among-passengers-on-singapore-to-bangkok-route -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-05-09 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok is taking precautions in preparation for potential thunderstorms and floods in the lead-up to Election Day on May 14, following recent forecasts by the Meteorological Department of increasing levels of rainfall this week in many areas. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) Department of Drainage and Sewerage has prepared water pumps, cranes, and mobile units for emergencies to drain water from flood-prone areas. Additionally, four main water tunnels, 193 pumping stations, 248 floodgates and 368 pumping wells are on standby in case of flooding. The agency has also prepared a flood prevention and solution action plan for the capital until Election Day. Municipal officials in all 50 districts and election officials have meanwhile been assigned to secure the printed details of candidates and political parties at polling stations in case of heavy rain. Additionally, the weather bureau has warned of scattered storms with gusty winds, some hail and possible lightning strikes in northern Thailand until May 10, while advising the public to avoid big trees, unsecured structures and billboards during severe weather and not to wear or carry metal outdoors. Last week, the Rangsit University’s Climate Change and Disaster Centre warned that there was a 30% chance of thunderstorms on Election Day, especially in the South. Heavy rain could also ruin ballot papers and boxes and cause heavy traffic.
