The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when the man, identified as Suparp, lay down on the tracks near a railway station with a cloth covering his face. Police Captain Thammarat Sukhiwong, a Muang police investigator, reported that the accident took place around 5.30pm, shortly after train 259 (Thon Buri-Nam Tok) left Wang Yen railway station in tambon Wang Yen, heading towards Nam Tok station. The train driver, whose identity remains undisclosed, told authorities that the train was still in the process of accelerating when he spotted the man lying on the tracks in front of him. Although he applied the brakes immediately, the driver was unable to stop the train in time, resulting in the train running over Suparp and sadly cutting him in half. Suparp’s younger sister informed authorities that her brother, who was suffering from the final stages of windpipe cancer, resided in a house approximately 200 metres from the railway. Due to his condition, Suparp was unable to eat properly and had to be tube-fed. In the past, he had attempted to take his own life by inserting a finger into an electrical socket. A TikTok user with the account name zumo4422 recently posted an inspiring video of a young boy carrying coins he had saved to buy a gold ring for his mother. The collected coins were all personally saved by the little boy. The shop where the boy planned to buy the gold ring was called Phutthasilp Goldsmith, located within the Thai Complex in Mueang Mahasarakham, Mahasarakham province. The post’s caption states: “A primary school boy saved money in a small safe to buy gold for his mother. He saw on TikTok that this shop accepts coins, so he brought his mother along. #PhutthasilpGoldsmithThaiComplex” In the video, the boy opens his small safe, which is packed with carefully bagged coins for his mother’s gold ring. 9. MFP to avoid joining inter-bloc coalition government after upcoming election PHOTO: พรรคก้าวไกล - Move Forward Party The Move Forward Party (MFP) has announced that they will not be participating in any “inter-bloc” coalition government after the forthcoming election, according to Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, the party’s campaign assistant. 10. PHOTO: พรรคก้าวไกล - Move Forward Party The Move Forward Party (MFP) has announced that they will not be participating in any “inter-bloc” coalition government after the forthcoming election, according to Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, the party’s campaign assistant. During a campaign rally yesterday in Samut Sakhon, Piyabutr stated that the MFP would avoid joining a government formed through “inter-bloc breeding”. This seems to be a reference to a coalition containing both pro-democracy and pro-dictatorship parties. Piyabutr, a prominent Progressive Movement (PM) figure, claimed that the MFP would prefer to be an opposition party in such a situation. Despite critics attempting to find wrongdoing against the party, Piyabutr mentioned that the party’s popularity had grown substantially in several opinion polls, gaining public support for MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat to become prime minister. The party’s success is attributed to the clear tasks outlined, which would be executed during the first 100 days of an MFP government. Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, PM chairman and an election campaign staffer of the MFP, admitted that leading the next government would present the MFP with significant challenges. Among these include military reform, devolving administrative powers, and dismantling some business monopolies held by major players. Nevertheless, Thanathorn emphasises that the government must invest in new technologies and science as tools to increase the country’s competitive edge in exports and job creation. He refutes the claims of the MFP being considered an extremist party, stressing that it advocates progressive policies. 12. Image Courtesy of Bangkok Post The Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI) has issued a warning to major political parties that their primary election campaign projects might be unnecessary as an economic stimulus, given that the country is not currently experiencing a recession. Yesterday, TDRI published a report intended to study and analyse the budget management of political parties, offering recommendations for adapting their future strategies. The analysis focused on the policies of six leading political parties: Pheu Thai, Palang Pracharath Party (PPRP), United Thai Nation (UTN) Party, Democrat Party, Bhumjaithai Party, and Move Forward Party (MFP). The TDRI discovered that most parties proposed policies which may lead to excessive budget spending if they were elected to office. This could negatively impact the economy, increasing public debt and threatening economic stability, reports Bangkok Post. The institute also highlighted that the majority of their financial policies could lead to increased financial burdens. As of last month, policies from four parties amounted to a combined cost of one trillion baht. 14. Thailand is gearing up for three upcoming public holidays that will temporarily shut down government offices, including immigration departments. The first of these holidays, Coronation Day, falls on Thursday, May 4, and will be followed by a “bridge” continuation day on Friday, May 5. The Thai government announced these additional holidays last year as a means to boost domestic tourism as the country started recovering from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. Following the May 4 and May 5 closures, immigration offices across the country will resume operations on Monday, May 8, opening their doors at 8.30am. Later in the month, another public holiday will occur on Wednesday, May 17, which marks the Royal Ploughing Ceremony. Consequently, immigration offices will remain closed on this day as well. These multiple public holidays provide ample opportunities for locals and residents alike to enjoy extended weekends within the nation. These breaks are intended to stimulate domestic tourism, thereby assisting Thailand’s economy as it rebounds from the detrimental effects of the health crisis. It’s worth noting that during these closures, those in need of immigration services, such as passport renewals or visa extensions, should plan accordingly to avoid unnecessary inconveniences. This includes completing any essential transactions before the public holidays or waiting until the immigration offices reopen following these breaks. 15. 700,000 tonnes of fresh durian expected to be sent to China this year BANGKOK (NNT) - The agriculture ministry aims to export no less than 700,000 tonnes of fresh durian to China this year, generating about 100 billion baht of revenue for Thailand. 16. BANGKOK (NNT) - The agriculture ministry aims to export no less than 700,000 tonnes of fresh durian to China this year, generating about 100 billion baht of revenue for Thailand. Government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said China is receiving Thai products very well at the moment. This is especially true for durians from Thailand, which are highly popular in the Chinese market and whose popularity has a tendency to grow. The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives expects Thailand to export no less than 700,000 tonnes of fresh durian to China during this year’s fruit harvest season in Thailand’s Eastern Region. This would generate an income of about 100 billion baht for the country. Mr. Anucha noted that the high demand for Thai durian resulted from cooperation between state and private sector organizations. These include durian exporters, Thai-Chinese agricultural products associations, and the Association of Thai Durian Producers. The said entities have worked to control the production process at every step of the way so the produce would be up to standard. The spokesman added that Thailand’s tourism sector is also receiving a good response from China. He cited China’s Civil Aviation Administration figures pointing to Thailand being among the top 5 destinations for flights departing from China, during April 10-16. Mr. Anucha said the government is ready to support Thai products and services with good potential so they would be able to compete in the Chinese as well as the global market. A focus will be on maintaining quality and compliance with international standards, which would then result in greater confidence being placed in the products and services. 18. BANGKOK (NNT) - To promote Thai entrepreneurs’ utilization of free trade agreements (FTAs) the Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) is holding an “FTA Products Fair” offering premium items from about 40 Thai manufacturers. DTN Director-General Auramon Supthaweethum said her department has continually promoted the use of the FTAs Thailand has with trade partners among entrepreneurs, farmers, cooperatives, and community enterprises. The leveraging of the 14 FTAs with 18 countries has enabled the trade value between Thailand and trade partners to grow by 270% over the past 10 years. She said the DTN will continue to lead FTA negotiations and the focus will now be on European Union countries, the European Free Trade Association, and the United Arab Emirates. The director-general expects new FTAs as well as revised FTAs to come into play by early or mid-2024. On the occasion of the DTN’s 81st anniversary, the department is holding an “FTA Products Fair” that brings together about 40 entrepreneurs, farmers, cooperatives, and community enterprises who have set up booths to offer their products. Modern trade store representatives have also been invited to the fair to observe the goods on offer and thus increase opportunities for the makers of the products who want to expand their markets. The representatives hailed from Central Food Retail, Lotus’s, Makro, and Thailand Post. Aside from products sale, the fair offers activities such as “golden minute” special discounts, a consultation clinic for matters relevant to FTAs and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), consultation on international trade, and information about trade partners’ import tariffs. Those interested may visit the fair until May 3rd at the Ministry of Commerce. 20. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet’s request for the approval of a 10.1 billion baht central budget to help ease the burden of electricity costs for the public has been rejected by the Election Commission (EC). Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wissanu Krea-ngam said the documents have been resubmitted to the EC, along with a Cabinet resolution outlining the reasons for the budget as requested by the EC. Dr Wissanu clarified that there were some minor issues due to lack of prior consultation on whether the central budget request should be submitted to the EC before or after receiving Cabinet’s approval. However, he said he believes that the process should not be complicated and should take no more than one week, as the EC holds meetings on a weekly basis. He added that even if EC members are traveling abroad, it should not affect the process as they rotate travel schedules. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that if the Cabinet does not request EC approval, the central budget cannot be used. This is in accordance with Article 169, which prohibits the appointment or transfer of government officials, undertaking commitments to the next government, or using the central budget unless it has been approved by the EC and is only for urgent and necessary allocations.
