BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand is gearing up for a busy month of festivals and events in March, with the return of many annual celebrations after a hiatus during the pandemic. The month holds particular significance as it includes the important Buddhist festival of Makha Bucha Day, which celebrates a gathering between Lord Buddha and 1,250 of his disciples and falls on the full moon day of the third lunar month. This year’s Makha Bucha Day falls on March 6. Among the many events taking place is the Hok Peng Festival, to Worship Phra That Chao Phu Phiang Chae Haeng, which will be held from February 28 to March 6 at Wat Phra That Chae Haeng in Nan. The festival, which celebrates the sixth Northern Thai lunar month, includes a range of Buddhist activities, a traditional market and shopping street, and cultural processions and competitions. Another festival not to be missed is the Hae Malai Khao Tok Festival in Maha Chana Chai District, Yasothon, from March 1-5. This cultural celebration involves tens of thousands of hand-made popped-rice garlands adorned on floats, with workshops and competitions for making the garlands also taking place. Between March 2 and 6, the Prachin Buri Makha Bucha Day Celebration will take place at Thailand’s oldest and largest bodhi tree. Activities include worshipping the Lord Buddha’s relics, merit-making and blessing rituals, exhibitions, cultural performances, sales of community products, a local market, and tours of Si Mahosot Ancient town. Meanwhile, Roi Et will host the Bun Phawet Merit Making Fair from March 3-5, where visitors can experience the unique Heet Sib Song merit-making tradition, and the Ban Pa Meang Orchid Tree Blossoms Festival from March 3-5, celebrating the white blossoms of the orchid tree that adorn the valley village of Ban Pa Meang. Other events include the Thao Suranari Memorial Fair in Nakhon Ratchasima from March 23 to April 3, which commemorates a famous heroine of ancient Thai history; the Ranong Hot Springs Festival on March 31, which celebrates the province’s health-giving Thai-style onsen in hot springs; and the Prasat Muang Tam Festival on March 31, which features a light-and-sound presentation, cultural shows, beauty pageant, and fair selling local products and food. There will also be plenty of opportunities to experience local culture and traditions, such as the ASEAN Barred Ground Dove Festival in Yala from March 4-5 and the Lamduan Flower Festival – Traditions of the Four Thai Ethnic Groups in Si Sa Ket from March 8-12. Visitors can also enjoy activities such as bird and butterfly watching at Kaeng Krachan National Park Protection Unit 4 in Phetchaburi from March to May, and the PELUPO International Music Festival on March 11 at Siam Country Club in Pattaya, Chon Buri. The move indicates that the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions is essentially over in Pattaya based on the number of vehicles flocking to the beach. Pattaya officials had informed the public about this ban since around February 15th. Since late 2020, parking on the beach side had been permitted to appease complaining beach vendors and due to lack of traffic due to Covid restrictions and border closures. The decision led to a reduction of the once three- or four-lane road to just two lanes with cars parked on both sides. BANGKOK (NNT) - Around 1.6 million registered rubber farmers will be able to sell raw rubber at a guaranteed price for the 2022-2023 season, after an assistance program was approved by the Cabinet on Tuesday (28 Feb). According to a government announcement, the cabinet has approved 7.6 billion baht for the price guarantee for the 2022-2023 season. The program will cover around 1.6 million rubber farmers with a combined 18.2 million rai of rubber plantations. The initiative offers compensation if rubber market prices fall below the benchmark. Farmers are guaranteed a maximum price of 60 baht per kg for raw rubber sheets, 57 baht per kg for latex, and 23 baht per kg for cup lump, with a maximum of 25 rai per family. The program is managed by the state-owned Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives. According to officials, the initiative is the fourth stage of an ongoing program and provides for a 40-60 split of earnings between rubber tappers and plantation owners. Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha said addressing decreasing crop prices is still a top concern, as officials are working to find the best solution to alleviate financial problems for farmers around the country. He also noted that the government has spent 30% of the national budget to deal with falling crop prices and will strive to do more to address the issue. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Transport has requested evidence to support allegations of corruption related to the Orange Line metro project, giving whistleblower Chuvit Kamolvisit 15 days to submit such evidence. In an urgent letter, the ministry requested that Chuvit provide a detailed account of the corruption allegations, including the names of the individuals involved. Specifically, the ministry asked for the name of an individual who owns a bank account in Singapore, where a commission of 30 billion baht was allegedly transferred to fund political campaigns. The ministry also asked if Chuvit had pursued legal action against those involved, such as by filing complaints with the National Anti-Corruption Commission or the Criminal Court. The Ministry of Transport noted that it is requesting this information in order to conduct a timely investigation and prosecute those involved. According to Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob, this request is standard procedure for such complaints, with any decision seeking repercussions against Chuvit depending on the evidence submitted. He further assured that the ministry is strictly complying with the law without discriminating against any parties. Senate President Reminds Senators to Maintain Neutrality During Election BANGKOK (NNT) - The Senate President has issued a reminder for senators to maintain their neutrality and avoid showing affiliation towards any political parties, including the party of the incumbent prime minister. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Senate President has issued a reminder for senators to maintain their neutrality and avoid showing affiliation towards any political parties, including the party of the incumbent prime minister. Senate President Pornpetch Wichitcholchai emphasized that senators must remain neutral, particularly if they participate in political activities. He therefore urged them to refrain from visiting the public while election campaigning is taking place, especially if they have relatives running for office. Pornpetch stressed that such actions could influence public opinion and violate the principles of the Senate. While one of the duties of senators is to select the next prime minister, the senate president explained that it is not necessary for senators to meet with prime ministerial candidates at any time during the election campaign period. The Senate President also discussed the amendment to the law on the prevention of forced disappearances, noting that it was tabled on February 28 and will soon be deliberated after being considered by the Constitutional Court. Two Thai criminologists say they doubt the claim by the teenage mother of the missing 8-month-old boy, who claims to have disposed of her child in a canal near home in Nakhon Pathom province. Dr. Trynh Phoraksa, a lecturer in criminology at the Faculty of Sociology and Anthropology at Mahidol University, told Thai PBS that he doubts Nim’s claim because of her background of domestic violence and bullying since childhood, which is the environment that could force her to become a habitual liar for her own survival, to avoid being bullied or assaulted. From her interview with the Mirror Foundation, he explained that the surroundings in which Nim has been living since childhood, the poverty and the fact that she was often bullied at school, her loneliness and without anyone to depend on or trust were the main factors behind her suspicious statement.
