BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has approved negotiations for an economic deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). According to Deputy Government Spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek, CEPA would be Thailand’s first free trade agreement (FTA) with a Middle Eastern country. The UAE is a key trading partner of Thailand in the Middle East and represents a new potential market. It is also an important center for trade, banking and transportation in the region, as well as a source for loading and forwarding products to other countries. The negotiation framework for CEPA will cover 20 issues, including trade in goods, services, e-commerce, digital trade and intellectual property. The draft negotiation framework aims to expand trade and investment opportunities, promote and attract investment, and emphasize all sectors that may be affected by trade liberalization. The spokesperson added that the CEPA deal will help Thailand reduce its trade deficit with the UAE, as Thailand will be able to export more products to the Middle Eastern country. Important Thai exports to the UAE include food products, textiles, clothing, leather, wood products, chemicals, rubber and plastic products, and electrical appliances. According to a recent study, the CEPA deal is projected to help expand Thailand’s GDP by 318 million to 357 million US dollars. BANGKOK (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has expressed satisfaction with Thailand’s progress in waste management through cooperation with Japan. Government Spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri said the prime minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting bilateral cooperation in areas of mutual interest and achieving balance, stability and sustainability for the nation. Collaboration with Japan began in 2016 under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of waste management, and was later renewed in April 2022 to expand its scope for another five years. The MoU aims to exchange information and experiences on waste management policy development and implementation, including recycling technology and innovation; ash management; and contaminated area management. A meeting was held on February 22nd to discuss the capacity enhancement of Thailand’s waste management and learn from Japan’s "waste to energy" technology. The renewed memorandum is part of an ongoing effort to support regional industrial development. It also promotes environmentally friendly businesses and energy utilization in line with the government’s green industry policy and the Bio-Circular-Green economic model. PHOTO: Thai Rath Army personnel working in the southern province of Narathiwat have been told not to enter locations until they’ve been confirmed as safe, following a fatal attack on Friday. Two members of a bomb disposal squad were killed when the convoy they were travelling in was attacked by a southern insurgent IED. The device exploded as the convoy drove over it on Baan Irkasae Road in the district of Si Sakhon at around 3pm. According to a Nation Thailand report, Chalermporn Khamkeaw, commander of the Narathiwat task force, has confirmed that the order was issued by the deputy commander of Army Region 4 and is designed to keep soldiers and volunteers safe. He says insurgency attacks weaken soldiers’ morale. “Officials have been instructed to ensure that the scene they enter is 100% safe.” After Friday’s attack, a second attack was carried out at around 8pm the following day, with suspected insurgents throwing a pipe bomb at Army personnel near a base in the district of Rueso. Nobody was injured in the incident. Flickr/Lurson [leket] Nateepitak Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport is urging passengers to allow extra time as the airport upgrades security screening at the departure terminal. According to a report from the National News Bureau of Thailand, some checkpoints are partially closed as a result of the renovation. Passengers heading back to other ports from the Phuket Airport today are also being warned about additional traffic and possible delays following the 3 day long weekend. BKK airport is currently installing an automated tray return system at the checkpoints where departing passengers need to have their carry-on baggage screened for prohibited items. Travellers are being advised to arrive extra early to allow for potential delays. It’s understood the automated tray return system will double capacity at checkpoints from 3,300 passengers an hour to 6,650. Once operational, the screening process is expected to be faster, leading to less congestion in the terminal. Additional staff members and immigration officers are being deployed to help passengers at security screening stations and passport control. However, the advice remains to leave plenty of time, at least 3 hours before departure, to avoid any delay. PHOTO: Thai Rath A Chinese man in Pattaya has sparked concern among neighbours after allowing his pet lion cub to roam freely within his residential area. According to a Pattaya New report, the police and wildlife officials visited the man’s home in the Banglamung district and found a white lion cub. The Chinese national, named as 39 year old Shen Tai, has confirmed the cub is his. Shen produced legal documents to show that he had purchased the lion cub from a Thai man who owns a white lion farm in the eastern province of Chachoengsao. The paperwork shows the Chinese man paid 50,000 baht for the lion cub. However, Shen could not produce the licence required to raise a lion. Officials have set a deadline by which he must obtain the permit from the Office of Conservation Area 2 within an undisclosed timeframe. Dr. Pairot Promwatt, a veterinarian who was with officials when they visited the cub’s owner, says white lions are wild animals considered dangerous and in the “control” category. Owners are required to hold a permit in order to own such an animal and the animal must be registered with the correct authority. It is currently legal to have a white lion as a pet in Thailand, provided the paperwork is in order, according to Dr Pairot. The vet added that the lion should be confined to a restricted area so it doesn’t pose a risk to people. For now, Shen has been allowed to keep his pet, provided he obtains the correct permit. Officials have pledged to follow up with him. The Election Commission is redrawing election constituency maps in eight provinces after the Constitutional Court ruled that non-Thai citizens must be excluded from the Thai population when calculating the number of constituency MPs for each respective province. The Court resolved unanimously today (Friday) that the word “citizens” does not include people who do not have Thai nationality and, therefore, they should not be included in the Thai population, as reported in the census of the Central Domicile Registration Office, in the calculation of the number of constituency MP for each province. The court’s ruling is not retroactive, which means that the calculation of the number of constituency MPs in previous elections will not be affected.
