Chiong added that full operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which is the country’s busiest gateway, have not yet resumed as it is only accepting 15 arrivals per hour, compared to 20 arrivals per hour before the catastrophic outage on Sunday. 11. Cathay Pacific flights return to Phuket The return of flights to Phuket keep racking up. But this one is particularly welcome. Hong-Kong based carrier Cathay Pacific, one of the worst affected airlines in the world over the past 3 years, has re-launched direct flights to Phuket. The re-launched flight schedule arrived yesterday, with 118 passengers on board, according to a Phuket Express report. The airline tried to relaunch flights last year in November but had to postpone the re-introduction because of the latest surge of Covid at the time. Hong Kong, along with China, recently eased Covid-19 travel restrictions and the introduction of the direct services back to Phuket is a reflection of this. Staff at Phuket Airport were on hand to welcome passengers arriving on CX771, presenting them with gifts and souvenirs to mark the occasion. As the pandemic abates and global travel resumes, more airlines are introducing new direct services to Phuket or adding to their already existing flights. Meanwhile, health officials in Thailand have stated that arrivals from China will not be subject to PCR tests but will be treated the same as all other passengers. A number of countries have introduced testing requirements for travellers from China as the country is currently experiencing a surge in Covid-19 infections since abruptly dropping nearly all Covid restrictions recently. 13. Covid vaccines With China experiencing a surge in Covid infections and simultaneously about to re-open its borders, tourism staff in Thailand are being urged to have a booster vaccine dose. According to a Bangkok Post report, the Tourism Authority of Thailand is calling on all tourism workers to ensure they’re protected ahead of the expected return of Chinese tourists. Yuthasak Supasorn, the TAT governor, says staff who are likely to have close contact with tourists, such as hotel receptionists, drivers, and tour guides, should make sure they’re protected against infection. China’s borders re-open next Sunday and Thailand expects to see a rise in the number of Chinese arrivals. A government spokesman says PM Prayut Chan-o-cha has also instructed the Public Health Ministry to ensure measures are in place to keep the public safe from infection. Thailand is preparing to welcome around 300,000 visitors from China during the first quarter of 2023, according to spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri. As a result of China’s re-opening, the TAT has also increased its target for foreign arrivals in 2023 from 20 million to 25 million. Tourism officials hope this year’s arrivals will generate revenue of around 2.4 trillion baht. Meanwhile, the National Committee for Communicable Diseases says that arrivals from China will be required to show evidence of vaccination and proof of health insurance. 15. An injured green sea turtle was washed ashore on Pha-ngan Island on Friday night and has subsequently died of the injuries and hunger after veterinarians had tried to save its life. A voluntary marine species conservation group, called Pha-ngan Sea Guardians, was alerted by villagers to the finding of the turtle on the island’s Chaloklum Beach and rushed to the scene. They found the turtle unable to move and with a deep woundon its neck, apparently from a rope, and its jaw was broken. The conservationists and officials from the Than Sadet-Pha-ngan national park tried to help the animal, but its condition did not improve. They took it to the research centre in Chumphon, which is better equipped, but it died on the way.
