Top Virologist Recommends Using Thai LAAB Supplies BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s top virologist has commented on the use of antibodies to treat COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s top virologist has commented on the use of antibodies to treat COVID-19 in immunocompromised patients. He suggested that the long-acting antibodies (LAABs) already available in the kingdom should be utilized during the current wave of COVID outbreaks. The effectiveness of the LAABs in stock is expected to only decline as the coronavirus mutates further. Dr Yong Poovorawan, a virology expert at Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine, explained that antibodies were used during the early stages of the pandemic. COVID vaccines were not available at the time and so plasma from recovered patients, which contained antibodies, were used to treat new patients. With the development of proper vaccines that trigger antibody production in recipients, there was no longer a need for plasma treatment. Dr Yong, who heads the university’s Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology, wrote that continuous viral mutations make manufactured antibodies less effective. With Omicron BA.2.75 being the current dominant strain, the most effective antibodies available in Thailand are those acquired under the LAAB procurement scheme. Dr Yong added that current LAABs will become even less effective as the virus mutates further and as sub-variants of the BQ.1, BQ.1.1 or XBB strains become widespread. The virologist is recommending that antibodies be given to patients with weak immune systems, such as those with chronic kidney failure, people on immunosuppressants, organ transfer patients and cancer patients undergoing certain stages of treatment. Dr Yong wrote that LAABs can be used to treat members of vulnerable groups who have not received sufficient vaccine injections. Administering LAABs as soon as possible after contracting COVID can also reduce symptom severity and risk of death. He noted that the Ministry of Health has enough LAABs in stock for patients who need them, adding that the treatment is very safe. He also advised putting the current LAAB stock to use now while it remains effective. BANGKOK (NNT) - Two events scheduled for this month will be showcasing local handicrafts and Thai silk, suitable as New Year gifts. The organizers hope these events will help promote local products and local economies by bringing them to a wider audience. The first event is OTOP City 2022. It will be held from 17 to 25 December at IMPACT exhibition center in Nonthaburi. This event will showcase and sell OTOP products made by local businesses, and provide product development workshops for local businesses to better meet their customers’ needs. The second event is Thai Silk Festival 2022, to take place from 15 to 18 December at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in Bangkok. This event aims to promote the culture, identity, and wisdom of Thai textiles while providing commercial spaces for local textile businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to reach a broader customer base. Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan has admired Thai textiles and OTOP products, which have seen continuous improvement to suit all activities and lifestyles. The DPM urged all sides to continue their efforts to conserve and pass on the wisdom of Thai textiles, as the government vows to promote Thai textiles in the domestic and international markets, as a way to help villagers and local businesses generate more income. Health Ministry Highlights Medical Tourism Potential BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has emphasized the potential benefits of its "Health for Wealth" concept in enhancing Thailand’s economy through medical tourism promotion. BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Public Health has emphasized the potential benefits of its "Health for Wealth" concept in enhancing Thailand’s economy through medical tourism promotion. Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that according to the Medical Tourism Association, Thailand ranks 5th among the world’s most popular health tourism destinations in 2021. High medical care standards, quality treatments, reasonable rates, and affordable cost of living for long-term patients have made the kingdom one of the most popular medical destinations. According to the Department of Health Service Support, a ministry survey conducted in collaboration with the Bank of Thailand (BOT) on 30 hospitals last year revealed that tourists who came for medical treatment spent around 11.9 billion baht. This represents a 47% increase over the previous year. The top five treatments generating the most revenue for hospitals were cardiovascular issues, metabolism, cancer, bones and joints, and neurological systems. Foreign medical tourists spent an average of 35,000 baht on treatments, with the majority of patients coming from Kuwait, followed by Cambodia, Myanmar, Japan and China. Visitors primarily sought treatment for their bones, joints, cardiovascular system, metabolism and teeth. The minister said he has been working to implement the Health for Wealth concept, with a focus of promoting Thailand as a medical tourism and wellness retreat destination to strengthen the nation’s economy. BANGKOK (NNT) - The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) plans to invest an additional 300 billion baht in the second phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway project. According to SRT officials, the blueprint for the 356-kilometer section of the project’s second phase extending from Nakhon Ratchasima to the border province of Nong Khai has already been completed. The Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning (ONEP) will soon receive an environmental impact assessment (EIA) before proceeding. The SRT will present a proposal to its executive board for consideration before submitting it to the Cabinet for approval in January or February of next year. If approved, a bid will be called and the winner determined by the end of 2023. The SRT said the rail project, which will take four years to complete, is scheduled to begin in 2024, with 13 contracts to be awarded. 12 will be awarded for construction and one for the railroad signaling system. The project’s second phase includes a 185-kilometer ground track and a 171-kilometer elevated track in several northeastern provinces, including Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nong Khai. The five railway stations along the route will be located in Bua Yai, Ban Phai, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Nong Khai. Thai Industrial Confidence Surges for Sixth Month BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s industrial confidence soared for the sixth straight month in November, boosted by recovering domestic demand and foreign tourist arrivals. Full Story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1280621-thai-industrial-confidence-surges-for-sixth-month/ -
BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s industrial confidence soared for the sixth straight month in November, boosted by recovering domestic demand and foreign tourist arrivals. According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), the Thai Industry Sentiment Index (TISI) edged up to 93.5 in November from 93.1 the previous month. The kingdom reported over 10 million international visitors last week, a figure that is predicted by the FTI to more than double next year. FTI Chairman Kriengkrai Thiennukul highlighted other positive industry developments, such as higher vehicle and electronic production due to improved semiconductor supply. He added that declining freight rates benefited exporters. On the downside, Kriengkrai noted that the industry index is expected to drop within the next three months due to concerns over increased production costs, particularly rising energy prices. As one of the main drivers of Thailand’s economy, exports were hit by weakening global demand while appreciation of the Thai baht lowered trade competitiveness. The Meteorological Department attributed the cooler weather over the next 24 hours to a strong cold front from China, which is blanketing northern parts of Thailand. In northern provinces, the department reports that temperatures this morning (Wednesday) fell by 1-3oC, to 17-21oC on the lowlands, while temperatures in the highlands range from 5-12oC, with ground frost in some areas. The election pledge has divided opinion and sparked a heated debate on whether this promise is reasonable or will open a can of worms. “Our policy to raise the daily minimum wage to 600 baht will be implemented as the Thai economy grows,” said Paetongtarn Shinawatra, in her capacity as chair of Pheu Thai’s committee on public participation and innovation. Six of Thailand’s smaller parties to merge ahead of next election Six small parties announced today (Wednesday) that they will merge to form a new party to contest the next election, due to the new electoral system which will make it almost impossible for a small party to win a House seat. Six small parties announced today (Wednesday) that they will merge to form a new party to contest the next election, due to the new electoral system which will make it almost impossible for a small party to win a House seat. Dr. Ravee Maschamadol, leader the New Palangdharma Party, said today that the merger of the New Palangdharma, Thairuamthai, Thaichana, Green, Thai Rungruang and Thai Rungroj parties is the only way for them to go under the new electoral system. Under the new system, there will one ballot for the election of constituency MPs and another for party-list MPs. The House will be made up of 400 constituency MPs and 100 party-list MPs, instead of 350 and 150 respectively under the old system. The distribution of the party-list seats will be calculated by dividing the total votes received by each party by 100, instead of 500 as in the previous election. This will minimize the chance of small parties being allocated party-list seats.
