BANGKOK (NNT) - The Bangkok city hall is encouraging offices to allow their workers to work from home this week to avoid the risk of flooding and traffic congestion due to heavy rainfall. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) today provided an update on its efforts to mitigate flooding, as many parts of the city were heavily inundated. The city is now asking offices to allow their employees to work from home throughout the remainder of the week or let their workers leave the office earlier than usual. Deputy Governor of Bangkok Tavida Kamolvej said more sandbags and makeshift levees have been placed in several locations to help mitigate the situation, while transportation will be provided to help commuters get home safely. The BMA is now working with the military to provide shuttle vehicles in flood-risk areas such as Don Muang, Lak Si, and Bang Khen. The city is to provide these services as frequently as possible. The BMA is also working with technical colleges to provide maintenance services for flood-damaged cars. Governor of Bangkok Chadchart Sittipunt has been coordinating with Pathum Thani Province and the Royal Irrigation Department to divert and drain water from the north as quickly as possible, to prevent flooding in the capital city. BANGKOK (NNT) - Related agencies are working hard to mitigate flooding in Ubon Ratchathani province. The province was visited by Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha today, as he called for timely compensation for affected people. The Prime Minister received a briefing on the latest flood situation in the northeastern region and expressed support for all units working to alleviate people’s hardships. Gen Prayut said he intended to meet affected people and gather their input on the issues that need to be addressed. He traveled to evacuation shelters and met up with villagers at Wat Warinthraram Community in Warin Chamrap district. Gen Prayut also made a video call to connect with other affected communities as he was able to convey the government’s intentions to stand by their side during these hard times. The Prime Minister explained that the current flooding is a result of excessive rainfall that exceeds the holding capacity of nearby reservoirs. He reassured the locals that related agencies are working to rectify the situation including flood drainage and post-flood rehabilitation plans. BANGKOK (NNT) - The APEC Economic Leaders’ Week (A-E-L-W) is set to take place next month. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has expressed the preparedness of event venues, while stressing on Thailand’s roles to help alleviate tension between economies. The MFA recently led members of the press to visit the newly renovated Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, where the convention halls, press rooms, and other facilities are now ready to host this important regional meeting. Tanee Sangrat, MFA Spokesman, said the AELW will provide an opportunity to express the potentials of Thailand, from tourism, innovations, technology, and soft powers. He said this event will provide a chance for Thailand to express its roles before the participating world leaders in areas such as trade and investment, preparations for the Asia-Pacific Free Trade Area, and safe travels post-pandemic. The topic of the environment will be the main focus on this year’s APEC Economic Leaders Meeting during the AELW. Thailand is aimed to promote its Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) economic model among APEC members, in order to improve sustainability in business operations, trade and investment, as well as sustainable livelihood in households, communities, and the society. This event will provide a platform for world leaders to discuss global challenges, including conflicts between superpowers. The MFA spokesman said Thailand can play its role as a mediator between countries, due to its friendly relations with all. Some leaders of the APEC economies have already confirmed their participation at the leaders’ week, including Singapore, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, while some countries are in the process of preparing the security measures for their leaders. The MFA spokesman said the Chinese President Xi Jinping could be participating unless he is occupied with other duties, while the ministry is still waiting for official confirmation from several other countries. The team scattered around the beach and randomly checked on suspicious individuals who lingered under the trees to prevent alleged prostitution. The officers also targeted groups of teenagers who might have been carrying weapons, illegal drugs, or drinking alcohol.
