  1. Any news on chiangmai area??

    Would like this stuff also.

Is it now 500 bath All inclusive meaning ISP Internet bandwith and connection + hardware connection through TOT .

FOr mrp The 5 kilometer distance maximum is normal for Adsl , if you are further a way from the central the signal becomes to weak to provide a reliable service. This is everywhere in the world like that . It is a limitation of ADSL technology.

  2. mouse,

you probably are on csloxinfo and they have a problem with their proxy cache again.

See another thread somewhere in this forum department about geocities.com

I can assure you it's great software for a low price. I don't own the site but a friend of mine does.

I don't get any compensation for this just wanted to make things more easy.

Problem will probably resolved hopefully sometime soon.

  3. Greg,

Why do you need as farang to make things more complicated than they are?

I was NOT about talking Thais. Last time I checked, no national Thais need a work permit to work. In order to get a work permit, you need to get a Vat cert. In order to get the VAt cert, you cannot use your home unless you own it. I did not feel, I have to in every response, state of course if you are Thai, this does apply. HelloHello is an American.
So as always thais can do almost anything without the paperwork and permits and blabla.

So let his wife open up her shop. IF they ever reach the 600.000 bath mark (yes i mean IF , like another 2million thai businesses who are still iffy about this) Then she can apply for vat and start an accounting.

Only if you start down the road of o a litimed company , then you are REQUIRED to keep accounting , PAY VAT even if you didn't sell anything , they want you to pay especially if there is a farang in the company, large capitalization startup cost associated with that..ect. Don't even think about getting your vat back when you export to foreign countrys. Everybody told me it is a dear misery...

So unless he needs to start buying property ect all this is not neccesary. He has been here for 2 years already ... Can a painter NOT paint that long ??

Sounds like YOU, don't feel, you should either. But that’s your decision and your life. Some people get deported for working without a work permit and some don't.

    Where did you get the idea i worked ?? i don't ???

My wife has her business , she supports me. I'm a lazy farang sitting in his garden everyday(sometimes i go fishing also) :-). If i'll look for work i'll surely need a work permit , that's true. untill then i live of the renewable 400.000 bath i need to show for a non O every year (isn't that the reason what it's for ??) and from what my wife supports me (somtam everyday :-).

  4. first of all do your numbers.

You can find a really good business plan and financial spreadsheet here.

    planmagic

Then you have an idea at least of cost , turnover estimate ect...

i calculated it once, it's doable provided you are willing to trow away your investment in the pc's.

30 pc at a minimum of 10.000 bath is 300.000 bath

some interior , networking , chairs tables ect. 50.000 bath.

30 pc's lets say you are really well filled up every day 75% full most of the time

gives you 22.5 pc's busy at 30 bath an hour this is 675 bath hour * 12 hours is 8100 bath a day.

SO it is doable but in the end it will take a loooongg time before you even got your investment back.

More likely your occupation rate will be much lower.

YOu are actually just asking how do i plan a business??

    SO use a plan tool..

  5. hi IT,

    you're extrapolating a bit i wasn't talking about handicrafts.

If the OWNER of a home/residence wants to use the home as a registered business address, then this is legal - as long as it is the OWNER, and there is a company sign outside, in the right place.

this is what i'm talking about. They are saying that ONLY A OWNER of a premise can use it as a business ?????

There ARE about 500.000 KAUW PAD shops in thailand wo go and rent a townhouse from somebody and setup shop ........ Don't tell me they are illegal ???

Besides when has everything become so serious in thailand ???

If i start to listen to sunbelt en Indo to much i'm thinking i'm back in Europe.

    My advice.

    YOU Paint and express yourself.

Your wife sells them in HER business or little shop in your garage. She " Buys " them somewhere else...

Just don't paint in the garage "in the shop" or you are working there.

    Nobody will give a damm....

especially not i you're up country somewhere..

PS: The visa officer the other day also needed A few hundred bath to make sure everything was LEGAL !!!! TIT.....

  6. Hi meadisch :D

Thanks for the info, i'll have a look tomorrow.

amazon is not possible for me , don't have an internet working credit card anymore. These thai cards don't work there :o and i've been told i need half a million bath in the bank to apply for one ??

  7. hi,

    just moved here from jontiem.

have been in pattaya , bangkok, hua hin , ko samui, phuket ect...

Worst place list to live in thailand ...

    1. Bangkok

    2. Pattaya

    3.Jontiem

    4. phuket

    5. chiang mai

    6. hua hin

    7. ko samui.

for me it just looks like normal thailand, people are a lot more friendly then bangkok or pattaya, weather is somewhat better, traffic is the same, No beach unfortunatley and everything is a little more expensive (things that have to come from the coast) like gasoline, seafood ect.

For now i like it a lot...

  8. Hoy edward,

Nice as it may seem , i would not put your mind to hard on finding a job in thailand.

I came here august last year as ######/project manager/network consultant and searched for It jobs.

Haven't found one yet !! They just don't want to see you coming. lose face...

Besides is saw here somewhere you're an oracle programmer ? Just plain forget that.

IF there are company's here that use oracle , if you get a job then, expect to get paid half of what you make in holland.

I'll give you one good advice if you come here.

    VEEL GELD MEEBRENGEN !!!!

  9. i can recommend linda real estate although i didn't rent through her.

The only one with a common sense and service for customers.

Nice old lady, litlle bit funny at first.

The landlord i rent from is ok , but the real estate guys were just a pain in the ass.

Took me 1 1/2 hours to change 3 words in a contract.

    Just plain morons.

    B

  10. Guys,

As an ###### / project consultant / net work consultant with some rather big networking project under my belt i can tell you the following:

IT in thailand is still lagging 5 to 8 years behind the rest of the world.

The best you can expect is a Hobby pc builder who shows up to perform your network and when a problem arises finds out a story.

"If "you find a experienced ###### or consultant in thailand his experience will still be stuck with AS 400 , Novell 4.x windows NT 4.

So don't expect something more. All systems used in thailand (including banks) are unsecure, old, in need of replacement but there's nobody capable of replacing them.

Try doing a electronic transfer from one account to the other one in 2 minutes.

2 people (one takes from his account) (the other recieves) Same bank , toghether at the desk ect.. They can't .

They have to redraw from one (count the money, give to your friend, deposit back)

    Technology in thailand ????

  11. For begs,

Bla bla bla... learn to read. i said i was asked the prices in sevenfold not that i bought the stuff....

    For gentleman,

there are a lot of good and bad points about Thailand, but on the whole it is obviously better than Belgium, or you wouldnt be here
Sure there are a lot of better points about thailand then there are about europe at this time. Indeed i wouldn't have come here otherwise. The weather is better that's for sure :-). I can also recall dozens of reasons why europe is worse then here :-)

Still doesn't keep my neckhairs from standing up when they try to rip me off!!

like i said it's ok to weigh the pro's and cons like everybody does, but i draw a line to the ripp off thing. No matter how cheap the food is or how hard everybody smiles that is not something i will shove under the mat so everybody is still "sabai".

now I just smile and say Pang Mark, Mai ouw krap and walk away.

Did that today 3 times, and the 4the shop found the stuff at the correct price. Only i don't smile , i laugh when they tell me their price.

Suprisingly there are shops out there who are professional and service minded. I even would gladly give them a hundred bath tip. Wich is not the same as trying to add a hundred bath to your price cause you see a white face.

May teach them that service gets rewarded , stealing gets frowned upon.

But then again , they don't even think that far. They just shrugg their shoulders and wait for the next idiot that wants to by their 27 year old rusty pickup for 250.000 bath???

By the way, dont think it is just you, Thais also get overcharged and check there bills regulary, sometimes it comes down to the "service girls" education, sometimes it is a mistake and sometimes it is a blatent rip off.
Most of the time the restaurant bills are wrong due to being disorganized. None of the waiters knows what the rest is doing, there no head waiter or boss and they just count wrong.

Then there is the "boss is not here and i'll 10 bath to the menu price" scam.

Since i moved to Chiangmai i already noticed a better moral and nicer people around then pattaya, bangkok, phuket.

I find if I am not in a "tourist area" or "business district" such as the main citys, it never happens - business is business, but on the whole, it isnt all of Thailand as you suggest.

Sure hope so. But this is a discussion forum no ? So we are having nice discussions here. Sorry that not all of my views coincide with everybody here.

practically impossible i would think :-)

    B

  12. for missinthailand,

I said 80 percent doesn't think about it.

My family here in New York uses it once in a while and when I went to Thailand last summer, they used it too.
That probably puts you in the 20 percent with a western, full english education, Experience in other cultures then thai culture ect..

So you probably know what it means yeah.

Unfortunatly the avererage guy on the street eating kauw pad has absolutely no clue...

They have almost never gone out of their home village or next big town and have really no idea what another culture is. let alone what racism is. The mere double pricing fact as discussed before is largely seen by westerners as racism. For a general thai it's business as usual.

We don't know racism? respect? ok buddy...you're so much better than us because ur a 'farang'

Again, i didn't say that.. i don't think myself as better. As having a better education ..yes As having a lot more worldly experience yes.. as being more smart probably for those 80 percent yes..

When i say thais steal it is because i experience it EVERY DAY. That the thai moral prefers to look upon it as business as usual say's more about your country then mine. Every bill i get needs to be checked double. Every price you ask needs to be compared 15 times before buying. Every special thing you want to buy here that not every ordinary thai needs costs sevenfold...

When i do meet the 20 percent with an education and some morals it's mostly a refreshing part of my day..

    For samran

    Zen,

You can't be the same guy I was butting heads with last week. I agree 95%.

    sure i am :-)
Just one quibble, its not not that there is no respect for others, its just that respect is usually expressed in totally different ways that aren't apparent to westerners. When that happens (usually in a more personal or family situation), I'll argue that the respect Thais show for each other is usually pretty good. I don't think there are too many western boys who would go into the monkhood so his mum can have more merit in the next life.

Ok i agree , only some forms we are used to in the west totally lack here, and probably some forms in thai we are totally oblivious about. i dint mean they have any respect only for each other (not famillie or people they know) in daily life , my opinion would be they have none. look at the way they drive, go stand in front of you ect. They just rely on the other party not to make a fuss about it for not losing face.

It cuts both ways. Thai people have a remarkably relaxed attitude to foreigners ways of doing things, based on the concept of "they don't know...lets not get too stressed about it". In the same way, westerners shouldn't get worked up about the whole "farang" word thing (unless as someone pointed out, it is used in situation where the person knows you and should know better).
Sure i agree, the only that gets a mouthfull when i hear her use it ( she only did once in the beginning) is my wife. she married me know my name so she can introduce me as khun xxx to other people not as farang belgium or similar.
BTW, I personally like the barge through tactic coming out of the lift/skytrain.

It's a different way of teaching

not everything needs to be resolved with smiling and trying not to "kreng jai "somebody. i find TO many people taking advantage of that.

For my perception it is the basic flaw in thai society that permits corruption , over jelous presidents, double pricing ect. More people should sometimes come out and push the other party's face in it.

Like maybe confront their president a little bit more by having a demonstration regarding the chicken flu in bkk instead of ahving a chicken eating party????

by the way i had several results already doing this crazy not done attitude in thai society".

I wnet to eat once in a belgian restaurant in pattaya (my country's food and hopefully service).

The placemats outside were dispicably dirty. So i asked the waitrees if she could change them or clean them. "Yes sir "

So they came back in exactly the same state as they were??? "please sir"

So i took them of the table and trew them on the ground next to me..

You should have seen the waitress face when i did that " big problem , lose face bla bla bla"

BUT next week when i went to eat there again guess what (food is great by the way).

They had brand new placemats??? And the waitress was very friendly, and we had a nice dinner.

Many times they just need that small kick to get started.

You may not like my method , but hey " i'm a stupid farang anyday" :o

    b

  13. The term farang being derogatory or racist?

You are looking to far ...

80 percent of the thais have no idea about the concept of racism.

Nor do they have an idea of respectfull distance in certain places. (banks for example)

Nor do they have an idea about cutting in lines in front of other people is being unpolite.

They totally have no idea of respect for others in this sense, no idea that they might hurt the feelings of other people when they say stuff like farang.

    Most asian have this property.

I recently watched a talk show on Hongkong TV " why are chinese so unrespectfull"

they talked about spitting, blowing your nose in your hands , standing in the full subway with newspapers , ect..; in short no respect for others...

How many times have you gotten out of an elevator in thailand without some people outside trying to get in first ???

I'm 120 kg so after a while i just decided to WALK OVER THEM when i get out if they come near me.

Suddennly you get e very schocked thai realizing that maybe his actions weren't the best idea !!

So don't start thinking to much in western principles. They just don't know the difference.

For them it's just another word.

  14. if anybody can find me a cheap old pickup to rent or buy. please let me know.

18000 is not luch for this car but is still a lot a month for LOS. need to cut some cost if possible. unfortunatly i need a car to get stuff sometimes.

By cheap i don't mean a 27 year old toyota pickup that still needs to cost 120000 bath....

Still don't understand why superold car owner still want a superhigh price for the wreck.

in belgium a car of Ten,twelve years old is sold between 5.000 and 20.000 bath

    b

  15. No the point is that THE THAI can leave , cause no matter how big a criminal you are in pattaya, the police will close their eyes for you because it's one of them you know.

Only the farangs are smiled on and said " oh not much we can do you know"

Some of my friends were involved in an accident with a 69 year old man.

He was run over by a thai girl apperantly drunk or high.

When they returned from bringing him into the hospital , and went to the police station...

The girl suddenly had changed gender and was a man now....

That's how fair and good the police is in thailand. Maffia.....

  16. i lived in building a for 6 months,

But never higher then the third floor :o

    who knows?

or the guy shoved her of himself. not so much investigation here as in the uk , he !

or she maybe saw how he looked at the bar girls :-)

In my opinion most of the so called suicides are some sinister revenge by some authorities or maffia.

i'll give you an idea to think about:

The persons doing this are know or trusted by the victims.

There is always no struggle and the door is opened every time by the victim.

never is there a cry for help or sounds of a struggle.

Let's say that you hear a knock on the door and you see a policeman standing outside. Do you open ?

of course, once he's inside he shoves a gun under your nose, ties a plastic bag around your head and waits till you die, or trows you of the balcony.

he (they) then return a hour or so later to investigate and conclude that this is a suicide.

There's a reason i moved from that place , and also why i'm critical of thai good intentions. Seen to many things in those 6 months.

on average 1 farang a week bites the dust in uncertain circumstances there.
