A Myanmar military court has sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi to a further seven years in prison, taking her overall jail time to 33 years. The country's former democratically-elected leader has been under house arrest since a military ousted her government in a coup in February 2021. Since then she's faced 18 months of trials on 19 charges - which rights groups say are a sham. The UN Security Council called for her release last week. On Friday she was sentenced on the final five charges she faced. A court found her guilty of corruption because she had not followed regulations in renting a helicopter for a government minister.

British fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood has died aged 81. In a statement on Twitter, her fashion house said she died "peacefully and surrounded" by her family in Clapham, south London. Westwood made her name with her controversial punk and new wave styles in the 1970s and went on to dress some of the biggest names in fashion. Her husband and creative partner Andreas Kronthaler said: "I will continue with Vivienne in my heart. "We have been working until the end and she has given me plenty of things to get on with."

The first legal dispensary for recreational marijuana in New York rung up its first sales on Thursday, opening up what is expected to be one of the country's most lucrative markets for cannabis — underscored by the dozens of unauthorized shops that have operated in the open for years. Americans could soon change the way they save for retirement thanks to several reforms included in a $1.7 trillion spending bill approved by House lawmakers last week. Travelers from China will need to test negative for COVID-19 before boarding flights to the U.S. starting next week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Wednesday. The testing requirement will apply to travelers from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau, and covers all passengers regardless of their nationality or vaccination status, the CDC said.
