I'm travelling from Thailand to the UK for a week. After arriving in the UK, there won't be the minimum seven days to apply for the Thailand Pass (It says to apply at least seven days before travel).

Is it possible to apply for the Thailand Pass before departing from Bangkok so that it's approved and ready for the return?

    Hi,

I have the same situation... business trip the U.S., departing BKK mid next week, will stay in the U.S. for about a week.  I got all my documents in order this week and applied for the Thai Pass 2 days ago.  It was approved within 36 hours.

In my experience, the Thai Pass system works pretty well.  Clear instructions and if you follow carefully it should be fine.  I'm sure there are many edge cases that they haven't adapted to yet, but so far, I'm fine with it.  I don't know this but I suspect they are processing applications based on planned arrival date.  I also have a Thai vaccine certificate so I cropped and uploaded the QR code where they ask for it.  The application says that helps speed it up.

    Good luck!

  2. do these people ever look out a window

Is that considered a high tech method for predicting weather several days in advance in your country?

BANGKOK, 5 March 2015 (NNT)-The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has issued warnings for people in 40 provinces against a tropical storm which is likely to take place during March 5-10

Agree. I wish TV had a downvote button for comments like that.

  3. Just curious, but what's wrong with using readily available anchor bolts?

    20091030093156831.jpg

Wanted to avoid having to align the boards I'm anchoring to the predrilled holes....

You don't have to do any alignment with pre-drilled holes if you use these fasteners. You drill an oversized hole in the wood that the fastener will easily fit through. Once the wood is in place you drill the right size hole in the concrete through the hole you drilled in the wood and then install the fastener by tapping it in place and tighten against the large washer.

Thanks wayned and Bad Kitty. This sounds like what I'm looking for. I will give these a go.

    Much appreciated!

  4. Hi All,

I'm working on a deck project where I would like to have concrete screws that don't require plastic or metal anchors.

In the U.S. you can get Tapcon screws for this purpose (these). Are these types of concrete screws available in Thailand? If so, where might I find them in or around Bangkok?

I've checked Homepro, Home Works, and a couple local contractor shops to no avail.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Many thanks,

    T.

  5. Are you serious? Sunrise Tacos? That's got to be the worst Mexican food I ever had. If you are American and lived in the West, then you know Mexican food. Try La Monita if you want higher quality. As for steaks, best value and taste is Neil's Tavern. Someone said the steaks are frozen, but I could never never tell. Best I've ever had in Bangkok.

Mexican: Agreed, Sunrise blows. La Monita is very good... staffs' dirty looks asides.

  6. Honestly.... here is the best steak in Thailand:

    1. Go to your local Villa.
    2. Buy one (or two) of the pre-cut, shrink wrapped, grass fed, rib eye steaks that they have in the butcher case. Pick a nice one, or have them cut one for you. Your eyes will know. Talk to the butcher.
    3. Bring it home, unwrap it and season it with salt, black pepper and thyme. Use your fingers to massage those seasonings into the meat. Rub it in. Then let it sit for a while.
    4. Take a big frying pan, and put it on a medium flame. Drop in a glug of olive oil (about a Tbsp or two.) Heat it up... medium high heat.
    5. The oil will start smoking. Shake the pan to spread the oil around. Lay in your steak.
    6. Let the steak cook for 3 MINUTES, then flip it, then cook another 3 MINUTES. 3 MINUTES per side. 3 MINUTES PER SIDE.
    7. Take it out of the pan and drop it on a plate. Let it just sit there and rest for at least 3-4 minutes.

Before you start step 1 above, prepare the accent:

    1. Buy some white button mushrooms, some garlic, and some dry white wine (like chardonnay). Sometimes Foodland has white button mushrooms, usually Villa does.
    2. Cut each mushroom in half.
    3. Mince/press a few cloves of garlic.
    4. Drop about a Tbsp (or so) of olive oil into a frying pan. Heat it up on medium heat
    5. Throw in and sauté the mushrooms for a minute or two, then add the minced garlic. Add a little bit of salt, maybe a bit of ground black pepper. Don't let the garlic turn dark, crisp, or burned... that will make it bitter.
    6. After a couple minutes, pour in a glass or two of that nice white wine you bought.
    7. Saute it all until the mushrooms and garlic look, smell and taste nice. You will know when it is ready.
    8. With pride, spread out the garlic-wine-mushroom stuff over and/or around your well rested steak.
    9. Mmmm Hmmm,

    If you are really ambitious:

    1. Before any of the above... buy a nice potato or two.
    2. Wrap them in foil.... aluminum is preferred, but tin will work.
    3. Bake those wrapped potatoes in your toaster oven (or whatever) for an hour or so.
    4. After an hour or so, and when the steak is ready, unwrap the baked potatoes, cut their tops open, and throw on a slab of butter. Put a little salt on them, then drop those bitches onto the plate with your kickass steak with those wicked ass sautéed mushrooms.

Pour yourself a glass of the wine leftover from step 6 in the mushroom part. Admire yourself for a moment, then rock out on the best <deleted> steak in B fuckin KK.

    Enjoy!

  7. Hmmm... that's not much of a budget for a steak dinner for a family but.... I know of a small Italian/Thai fusion restaurant that is near Rajpreuk Golf Course. It's on Ngam Wong Wan 47 Yaek 39. You can look at the area by searching "North Park Bangkok" on google maps. It's not far from the roundabout near the golf course.

Another idea... there is an amazing cake bakery called Laliette on Viphavadi16 (Ratchadaphisek19). A gift certificate there might be cool. Their cakes are truly amazing...

Not sure if either of these place of gift certificates, but you can probably work something out.

    Good luck!

  8. Update here...

Well, I figured out that if I lock the doors with the metal key via the keyhole (not the electronic lock button on they key), the issue does not occur. It only happens when you use the electronic lock button, as that arms the alarm.

Finally, I got Toyota to test it and wait for the alarm to go off, and they saw the same problem. They dug around and found a faulty sensor in the hood latch... the sensor that detects whether the hood is closed or opened. They replaced the whole latch assembly including the sensor.

    Voila... it's fixed!

    Cheers!

  9. Hello,

I have a 2007 Toyota Fortuner, which I have never had any major issues with at all.

Recently, the theft deterrent alarm (the horn blowing) has been triggering randomly, sometimes in the parking lot at work in the middle of the day, sometimes in the middle of the night in the parking garage at my apartment.

It usually goes for about 30 seconds then just stops. It happens very randomly... may a couple times a week. There is nothing around the car that could trigger it, and it is only supposed to trigger when there is an unauthorized entry.

Has anyone had this issue with a Fortuner or other Toyota model? And if so, how was it resolved?

Just wanted to check before I bring it in to the dealer, as I can't find any clear explanation out on the internet.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  10. Were these spikes on the inside of the barrier? Of are they put on the outside to stop people approaching the barriers? So can I get to Bond Street from Pak Kret without a problem?

They were inside the barrier... I didn't think much of it then, since it was so easy to get around the barrier, and there was really no one around telling anyone to stop.

Also, this was Sunday evening... before the shutdown was supposed to start.

And sorry, I'm not sure where Bond street is. But today a friend of mine sent me this attached photo... supposedly taken on the bridge in front of DSI.

  11. Hi,

We use TOT HiSpeed internet in Khlong Luang (Pathum Thani).

Over the past week, we have found that we cannot access some websites. For examples:

    Websites that work fine:

    • Facebook
    • Google
    • Bangkok Post
    • The Nation
    • Reddit
    • edition.cnn.com (CNN's international news site)

Websites that do NOT load at all:

    • thaivisa.com/forum/ (but thaivisa.com itself loads fine)!
    • us.cnn.com
    • livememe.com
    • Thai Airways
    • and many others random site.

    Yahoo loads only sometimes.

Does anybody else experience this with TOT? I suspect they have some DNS handling issues or something.

If you have had this problem and figured out how to get around it, please share any advice.

    Thanks!

  12. Last night at about 8:30 PM, on my way home along Chaeng Wattana, I encountered a protester roadblock. Most cars were turning around.

There wasn't really anyone around directly guarding the roadblock, and there was enough room, so I just squeezed by it, and continued on my way along Chaeng Wattana. Drove home and parked. No big deal.

This morning I went to my car and was surprised to find it with two flat front tires....

Turns out, Chaeng Wattana road was laced with crude tire spikes.

    Attached are some photos.

So be warned.... if you are driving near or through a protest area.... watch out!

  13. Hi All,

Looks like the madam is going to drag me up to Mukdahan this New Year's holiday for a few days.

I'd hate to let this beautiful weather slide by with out playing any golf on my holiday.

Can anyone recommend any decent golf courses in the vicinity of Mukdahan (within 1-2 hours drive or so)? This would include any courses over the bridge in Laos (Savannakhet area).

Thanks in advance for any recommendations!!

    Cheers,

    T.
