  1. I am using Dtac and emailed them about when edge will be available in Chiang Rai. They said that it was available in Chiang Rai airport. I used my PPC the other day on the ground floor coffee shop only to find that I was on gprs mode and was surfing at say 38kbps speeds. Which part of the airport do I need to be in to use edge?

  2. If you are using Mozilla Firefox go to

    tools

    options

    download

that is where you will find download destination.

It is probably showing download to desktop.

Click on the ask me where to download button and voila, put it where you want.

For IE I have no idea as I dont use it, try

    help

    search

    downloads

Sorry Crushdepth beat me to it as I am only a 2 fingered typist at best.

Cheers guys. That worked. Didnt realise it was that simple!

  3. I own a 1GB Muvo Creative Mp3 player. I cracked the screen by dropping it and a minute quanity of blue liquid came out of the LCD (looks like dried biro ink). It can still read the display to see what songs are playing but I would like it fixed to get it back to normal again. The warrantee ran out 3 months ago. Where can I get it repaired?

  4. Anybody know a shop that will replace my Palm Pilot M505 batteries? It's slowly dying.

    thanks,

Hi! I just got on the phone to a friend of mine and asked him for you. He said that you may get it done in Fortune in BKK. He can't remember whether it was the 2nd or 3rd floor. He couldnt remember the name of the store (something like 'layback') I haven't been there personally so U may have to check it out for yourself. Not sure if they will do it for your device because it is rather old.

I do remember seeing that model selling new for 2,500 baht a year and a half ago in Chiang Mai. If you are lucky you maybe be able to pick one left in stock in Fortune from one of the older shops at a bargain price then syc your info.

Another alternative (if you have a credit card) is to order one off ebay and put it in yourself. A lot of the pda batteries made in Hong Kong can be sent to you at very reasonable prices. If you do, I recommend paying a little extra and getting a high capacity high milliamp one. That way you won't need to charge it for ages. Some sellers send you a set of screw drivers too with instructions how to do it yourself. I did it for my tungsten T and I was a little scared at first. I just followed the instructions and it worked really well. I also did it for my zire 72 (not recommended for this model because it is so hard to do!). After installing it I felt like I had a new device!

CHeck out this link. It has step by step instructions.

Whichever option you choose pls let me know if it was successful. Also I need to know if that shop really does old model palm pdas and how much they charge.

    Good luck!

  5. I don't know whether to consider this good news or bad:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060612/ap_on_...youth_ring_tone

NEW YORK - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class -- and many teachers can't even hear the ring.

Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing.

As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds.

On one hand, this prevents phones from disturbing the teachers themselves during class- on the other hand, though, the bulk of the students will still hear the tone and potentially be distracted. And in principle, students shouldn't be paying attention in class to their phones.

I suppose ultimately the technology war over phones in schools will result in area-wide signal jammers, at which point things will probably get taken to court...

    "Steven"

Where can I download this ringtone?

  6. Hi all,

i was just wandering if anybody here has any inside knowledge/information on MFLU in Chiang rai.

Visited earlier this week, amazed by the campus, would like to know how it is to work/live there etc.

    Thanks a lot

    costas :o

I have heard bad things about that place. I have a friend who worked there and got out. He couldn't stand the rules. At one point they wanted his finger prints and wanted to store it on computer. They just said that all farangs had to do it for security reasons. I also heard that they made you do extra work outside your normal hours for no extra pay. I am only going by what I hear but one thing I do know for sure is that they have a high turnover of farang staff. Some of the good things that I have heard are that the students are a pleasure to teach and that getting access to materials and teaching facilities i.e computers, audio/visual equipment is relatively hassle-free compared to other universities. If you decide to work there, be prepared to commute 15km to get from work to the town (either that or live near the univeristy)

  7. I have a palm infrared keyboard which I bought for my palm zire 72 pda. It came with the palm drivers and worked well with my palm. Now I have a Hp hw6515 pocket pc. Is it possible to use the keyboard with my new PPC? If so, how?

  8. Thanks for the replies! :o

The nokia 6610 looks OK, but maybe a little older than I would like. Prices seem to be around 2,500 baht for that one.

Crabstix, that Motorola L6 is sounding pretty nice...looks like it fits all my needs and more for a good price. I found it online at telewiz for only 4,500 baht. This could be my next phone...thanks for the suggestion.

Lung, I've known about siamphone.com, but it's mostly Thai so not too easy for me to use. Thaimobilecenter.com is a nice site I haven't seen before, though. A lot of Thai, but a good amount of English too...thanks for the reference.

    :D:D:D

Wow! That is cheap! Wish I hadn't paid so much for my one. I got mine for 6,500 in March 2006 in MBK. I thought it was a bargain at the time since it was originally 7,900 baht (probably even more before the L7 was out) It is now available in two colours, grey or pink.

Grey looks cool. The speaker is nice and loud for ringtones too. The 10 MB that is built in is sufficent for ringtones but U won't have any room for songs. I guess if songs were important the L7 would be the one to buy.

  9. I'm looking to buy a new mobile phone and was wondering if anyone had some recommendations. This is what I'm looking for:
    • Price around 5-6,000 baht.
    • Looks good (image is everything in thailand, right?). I've always liked phones that flip open.
    • Has a color screen (is that standard these days?)
    • Has some decent games for those long, traffic-jammed taxi rides.
    • I do not need internet capability or palm pilot or other complex capabilities.
    • Easy for typing text messages in Thai and English.
    • A camera is a nice feature, but by no means required.
    • The phone is to be bought in Thailand for use in Thailand only.

I think there's a lot of phones that would fit these requirements now a days. If you have a phone that you really like, let me know. Any model recommendations, or sites where I can browse through phones?

    :o

I recommend the Motorola L6. It is slim, stylish, fairly easy to use and fits your budget. Was 7,900 in Jay Mart during February of 2006. It has recently dropped to 5,100 baht. It has a colour screen, 10 MB memory and has bluetooth. Can't comment on the games as I've never played them but they do have a few on there. Perhaps other L6 users on this forum can comment on the games. It comes with a low resolution camera which can be useful for quick snaps suitable for email attachments. I get 2.5- 3 hours battery life on a single charge. The only catch would be that composing sms's has a bit of a learning curve but once you've mastered it you can type at fairly fast speeds. Personally I think that you can't beat Nokia for user friendliness when it comes to composing sms. If it is not absoultely necessary for you to have a flip top phone, I recommend this phone. Now is a good time to buy as it has dropped in price. I reckon if you wait any longer it will be discontinued. Orange have a promotion whereby if you buy the phone with the sim for 5,100 baht you get a lot of free calls (something like 300 baht of credits a month for 6 months). The L6 delivers a lot of bang for the buck!

  10. Does anyone know where I can contact & hire a Thai private investigator in Chiang Rai. A Thai friend of mine suspects that his driver is secretly selling petrol from his delivery trucks. He needs someone to be at a certain location 7km from the town. The investigator must be willing to work at night since he requires photographs to be taken at the early hours of the morning.

If there is suspicious on the driver stealing and selling the petrol, just told your friend to laid him off with some compensation, why hire a PI without saving all the headache.

Sounds like an idea. Don't you think he dserves to be in jail though? Sounds better than rewarding him don't you think?

Please believe me when I tell you that I am not the smartest guy in the world but couldnt your Thai friend just follow the driver himself or be there at this location, maybe use a friends car ?

Just a suggestion as it seems far easier than trying to track down a PI in CR.

    Good luck

    In the Rai!

He tried that. He is sick of staying up late at night waiting impatiently. He is a busy man with a business to run. Hiring someone would take up less of his time

  13. Yeah me too!

Am DYING to get my hands on one of those beauties

Yeah me too! I love the qwerty keyboard for data entry and the overall style of the phone. My only concern is the screen. Anyone know if the screen is bigger than that of the treo 650/700? I like a nicely sized screen for surfing. The treo screen is too tiny!

  14. Where is a good place to buy running shoes in Chiang Mai? I wanna know which place has a wide range of styles to choose from at reasonable prices. I need either a pair of New Balance or Nike. Somebody recommended Kad Suan Kaew. Is that the best place to buy running shoes?

  15. I bought a PC in Pantip plaza a couple of years ago. Today a sign popped up asking if I wanted new windows updates. I clicked 'yes' and it replied that I had bought counterfeit windows. Now every time I turn on my pc, this annoying sign pops up.

How can I get rid of it?

  16. After having bought a samsung dlp 61" with dvd home theathre several months ago I decided to buy a dvd recorder, I was happy with my tv set and decided to stay with the brand. Bought a dvd recorder without hard disk for 9,900 baht, its easy to program, you can select the quality of your recordings from high ( about 1 hour recording) to lower ( up to 8 hours on one disk)

I always use the 6 hours setting, gives me a good quality picture and can put 3 movies in one disk.

Can use all kind of dvd's. There is a port for digital camera as well. Would recommend this one.

Can you set the timer to record channels from ubc? Can you use RW discs?

  17. yes I agree. I would suggest phoning the call center and get forwarded to the promotions department. You may be forwarded to an automated message. The message will give you a list of promotions. You can change your promtion at the touch of a button but the 30 baht or so will be deducted from your sim for each time you switched promotions. I remember last month that Orange had a good deal where you could top up 90 baht and make it last a whole month (but the cost of making calls was about 2.5 baht per minute). I am sure Dtac will have a similar promotion as those two companies are always trying to either match or beat each other's promotions to encourage users. Good luck

Thanks. That's really useful. Shame Samsung isn't a Japanese brand. It has to be Japanese to work right? :o

  19. Has anyone tried the RCR or any other Thai brand dvd recorders?

I saw them selling for 6000-7000 baht in Big C. I know they don't have hard discs built in but I only have a budget of 10,000 baht. I just want to know if the picture quality is any good and if the machines are reliable. Also, once recorded, will they play on standard dvd players? One other thing I am interested is if it is possible to use dvd conversion software to convert them to vcd so that they can be played on a normal vcd player.

If I had more money I would buy one with a hard disc but I have waited for 2 years for prices to drop but they have not dropped significantly enough for me to be able to afford one. It seems they are increasing in memory capacity all the time rather than dropping in price (well not low enough to be affordable anyway!) The cheapest hard disc player I could find was the LG RH7521W which had reduced from 22,900 baht to 13,990 baht. Ithas a 80 GB hard drive. I tried to find the review on the net but couldn't. Seems that most people are interested in buying pioneer.

  20. I recorded a documentary about the history of football last week in National Geographic on UBC.

I used my capture card to get it on my pc and burn to disc. Unfortunately I had to capture it twice because the frames froze after 37 minutes. The first 36 minutes are now burned onto one disk and the second part is burned onto a second disc. In total both discs take up a total of 43 minutes. Is there any sofware available in Thailand which will allow me to join the two files together and burn them to ONE disc? The data on both discs are DAT files
