  1. not easy to find in thailand anymore for o2mini xda11

the good thai web is www.mrpalm.com

but need to get thai friend to read for you but will certainly worth it.

the said model crash a lot not recommend to anyone.

try the new gigabyte..a lot better with mobile5

I bought an O2 XdaIIi in January in Phantip Plaza but messed up small time.

The model I bought was great with all accessories and several non vendor accessories available the guy showed all the CD's, accessories and handbook were in the box. I was already familiar with windows mobile so I checked the pda myself and used the phone, all worked so I was Happy and paid my money.

Now the problem started when I tried to register the PDA on the O2 website, it would not accept the serial #.

I contacted O2 and was told that this was a german release and could only be registered on the O2 german website. End of communication no further emails answered.

I can get to the O2 website but as I cannot read etc german I cannot register the device. Also when checking all the support in the box was also in german. That is not so much a problem as the userhandbook is available from any O2 website.

The PDA is great and does everything I want and need and a bit more the only PIB is I cannot as of yet register it.

Suggestions if you do decide to buy one:

    Buy an extra battery

Buy a portable charger and cable

    Buy the screen protector

The device is really battery hungry especially if you use the wifi or the phone keeps loosing the signal. The cradle has a slot for an extra battery to be charged as well as the PDA slot.

One nice feature is the "turn on flight mode" allows the PDA to be used on board to play games or work with all the radio features turned off.

    Hope this helps

Great. That helps a lot. I think it's good that these batteries are user replaceable. It's something that palm should have thought about a long time ago (i.e before the palm Treo 650). Can you remember how much you paid for it?

  2. Does anyone know where I can buy the o2 mini pro in Thailand? A seller in Panthip told me about 2 months ago that it would be released in Thailand soon. Not usre if it has been released yet.

Also does anyone own the O2 xda II mini? They used to sell for 28,000 a year ago in Thailand.

A thai friend told me about 2 months ago that the price had dropped to 20,000 baht in Bangkok.

I need to know how reliable they are and whether they are stable or prone to crashes. If they are good I will pick one up on my next trip to Bangkok before they finally sell out or stop producing them.

I am currently a palm user would like to switch to Pocket PC because I need something with a user replaceable battery.

Take a look at the O2 Atom for 1 it supports EDGE as well as being a faster device.

Thanks. I did consider that device. It looks cool and is very compact. After reading the reviews I was put off by it because it is prone to crashes.

  4. Is their a website where I can check out the Pda Cell phones that are available in Thailand?

Im in the market for one and I want to do some research here before I head up to Bangkok and buy one. Or is pretty much everything available there?

Im looking for Wifi, GPS/GPRS/EDGE, bluetooth, and gps would be a plus.

There is a nice hp comming out in a few months that I might have to wait for unless something else is similiar in the mean time.

I have heard that the HP IPAQ hw6515 is good. It has gps built in. Good for someone who favours data entry by qwerty keyboard. I've also heard that they price has dropped a lot now. Not sure if I can recall a friend saying that it is only 25,000 baht now (used to be close to 30,000 baht) Be aware that a device of such capabilities will suck battery life really quickly. Luckily Bangkok is good for affordable pda accessories and extras e.g batteries. Personally I like the capabilities of the Dopod 900 but it's far too expensive at 45,000 baht (that's the price sold up country but I'm sure Bangkok will be at least a coupld of thousand baht cheaper)

  5. Where can I buy low fat vinaigrette dressing in Chiang Rai? I am sick of going all the way to Tops Supermarket in Chiang Mai to buy it.

Speaking of Tops. I've heard that they are building one in Chiang Rai. Any ideas when it will be complete?

  6. Checked out the price of the cheapest Honda Wave. Turns out they are charging 31,000 but that's with no disc brake or autostart. It's only 100cc. Do disc brakes really make much difference? Not sure if I should invest the extra couple of thousand or so to get them. Are they durable?

I would choose disk brakes over drum anytime, drums don't work well when they get hot and are not good in the rain either.

I agree that the Yamaha Meos look cool. Tempted to get one myself but imagine they suck up tons of fuel. Also not sure how easy they are to repair. My friend says anything automatic which has lots of circuitry inside means more things can go wrong = more repair bills!

I don't know how tall you are, but the Mio is a small bike, you might look a bit odd perched on it!

I don't understand what you mean by circuitry, it's a mechanical system, not electrical. They're probably more reliable than a chain drive, no chains or sprockets to wear our or maintain. The belts are easy to change and only need the odd adjustment. Getting the full autos maintained isn't a problem either, they've been around a while now. Both Honda and Yamaha have a million dealers in LOS, and another couple of million sellers and repairers of them! As for fuel consumption, even my heap of a full auto JRD gets near on 100MPG, so I wouldn't think Jap bikes are any worse.

Anyone out there with a Jap full auto?

Thanks for advice. You've convinced me to go for something with disc brakes. I guess a couple of thousand baht is really nothing if you consider that it's safer in rainy weather. btw I am 5 ft 7 and weigh 62kg. Small bike shouldnt be a problem for a small guy like me :o

  7. Question about the automatic transmission bikes that don't need to be shifted, as opposed to the auto clutches that still get shifted: don't they use up horsepower? All auto trannys and torque converters on small car engines use up a noticeable percent of the horsepower/torque available at the crankshaft. The last thing a 125cc bike needs is to lose one or two horsepower.

Checked out the price of the cheapest Honda Wave. Turns out they are charging 31,000 but that's with no disc brake or autostart. It's only 100cc. Do disc brakes really make much difference? Not sure if I should invest the extra couple of thousand or so to get them. Are they durable?

  8. If you are sending a lot of sms's I think it might be wise to buy an sms package. Dtac do a good one (only for monthly contracts ie post-pay). I think it works out to something like 1.5 OR 2 baht per sms depending on which package you buy. If you don't have an sms package you will be charged 3 baht/sms. If you sms a lot, this package can save you a lot of money. I am pretty sure you don't need to buy a new sim. You just take your existing pre-paid sim to the Dtac shop and tell them you want to do monthly payments. Bring your passport (you might also need a work permit, can't remember). Monthly usually works out better.

I am using the DTAC ZAD promotion which allows me to send sms's & mms's for 1 baht/time. My payment plan is 300 baht/month. These promotions are always changing so keep looking out for new promotions. I think a couple of months back they had a promotion where you could send up to 300 sms's/month for free!

just checked out the dtac website. It states that you can send 50 sms for a 50 baht sms package!

    http://vas.dtac.co.th/activity_smsmms.htm

you might want to ask a Thai to explain the conditions to you as the website is in Thai

  9. I can remember catching a quick glimps of the U-box under someone's Honda wave 125. Looked big enough for a shopping bag containing a few groceries. Is it big enough to put say a bottle of 100 pipers whisky in there?

Also what other Honda models have U boxes under their seats?

  10. I own a 125cc wave with a disc brake. It rides fine has enough pep. Buzzy above 90kph. Very pleasant at 40-60kph.

Rode a friends 10 year old 100cc dream for a week and found it very nice around town.

A Thai told me that the Honda Dreams are manufactured and assembled in Japan whereas the Honda Waves are made in Japan but assembled in Thailand and so are cheaper. Is that True?

This seems unlikely as that 6000 isn't a big enough price difference for an import.

Thanks to all of you for your advice. Just spoke to a friend who knows a mechanic in Chiang Mai. Apparently they are all assembled in Thailand now (Waves & Dreams).

Another friend also told me that Waves are not only cheaper, but also cheaper if you want parts repaired. For example the flaps (the thingies which keep your legs getting wet as you ride through puddles) are around 500 baht to replace for Honda Dreams but only 250 baht for Honda Waves!

  11. Does anyone know where to get disposable one day contact lenses cheaply in Bangkok?

I paid 400 baht per box in MBK. Do you know of any cheaper places than that?

oops forgot to mention that they were 'focus dailies'

  12. Which shop in Chiang Rai do you recommend for buying a new honda motorbike? I need to buy one which will give good after sales service.

Also I have noticed a lot of students riding around on the new honda waves (mostly 100cc). A few years back it seemed the Honda dreams. Are they better than the dreams or is it just cos they are more stylish?

I am not sure which of the two models to buy.

  13. Most of the Dreams I've seen have wire wheels, cheap thin tyres, tiny drum brakes front and rear, all strictly 1960's technology. I thought the Waves looked more modern, with better kit. Each line, however, seems to come in infinite varieties, so you can work your way up the line. Even the 125's are underpowered with only a Thai pilot, and suicidal with two farang on board.

However, both the Wave and Dream lines seem to be faint attempts at mere, minimal basic transport, with no thought for control or safety. The CBR150, which I have, is a baby sportsbike in a whole 'nother category and price range; similarly the Phantom is in a class by itself as a chopper, but even more expensive.

Frankly, Dreams and Waves seem like suicide machines to me. Am I prejudiced?

I agree that the Dreams don't seem to have developed much over the years. Could this be an indication that the bike itself has reached a point where developing it further would only make it less efficient or more expensive to repair? I am a practical person looking for a cheap reliable bike which can get me from A to B. Every day wear & tear is inevitable so I need a bike which the average mechanic without too much trouble. I appreciate that the more you pay for a bike, the more horsepower you get (as well as the higher fuel consumption that goes with it!). I have no doubt that the CBR150 is a better bike since is costs so much more. Do I really need all that horsepower? I just want to get to work and back and go to the town 7 km away a few times a week.

Suppose you had to make the choice and the CBR150 did not exist. Would you go for the Honda Dream or Wave? Sorry to narrow down your choices :o Just out of curiousity though, how are the CBR150 bikes and Phantoms safer? I thought if a car hits you at high speed (touch wood this never happens even to my worse enemy!) while you are riding your bike, you're pretty much history anyway.

  14. I am planning to buy a new motorbike soon. Which is better? Honda wave or Honda Dream?

In what way is it better?

It seems logical to assume that the Honda Dream is better since is is around 37,000 baht whereas the honda wave is only 31,000 baht but I want to know what you get for the extra 6000 baht you pay.

A Thai told me that the Honda Dreams are manufactured and assembled in Japan whereas the Honda Waves are made in Japan but assembled in Thailand and so are cheaper. Is that True?

I am finding it hard to make a decision which one to buy. Any advice would be appreciated. Ideally I'd like to have a bike which is reliable and is easy to find parts for so that repairs will be cheap and easy.

  15. take your Mp3 player into pantip , future or zeer and try out the ranges of computer speakers available - many sizes and types and quite cheap.

Thanks. I will do that the next time I am in Bangkok. I am working in Chiang Rai. I Appreciate your advice. I hope they let me blast up the volume in the shop!

  16. I have a 1GB Creative MuVo MP3 player for recording dialogues for teaching. It records sound in WAV format. The place I work for does not have CD/MP3 players powerful enough to play in a classroom of 50 students. 60 Watt tape players just about work ok but I am getting sick of chewed up tapes. I am thinking of getting speakers and an amplifier loud enough to play to 50 students in a classroom. Which do you recommend? How many watts do I need? I want the speakers and amp to be small enough to fit in an average sized backpack.

  17. Cheers guys for all your useful advice. You don't know how much it means to me to get good advice. I will no doubt seek a professional to clean out my a/c. I think much better than the barbaric 'blast it with jets at the car wash' approach!!! :o

No. You do not take it to the car wash. What has to be cleaned is the fin area that provide the cooling as they become covered with dirt. That is done in place by a decent air conditioner repair guy. They will use rubber sheets to direct the water flow into a paint can or some other contained and it will only take an hour or two. Believe we pay 500 or 600 baht and do every year. They will do both inside and outside units. After that I would use an extra filter of the 3M Flitrete type sold in hardware or Lotus type places (in a red package in tools section) that filter much better than normal air conditioner filters.

Also make sure they purge the drain tubes/pipes. Over a long period they could be accumulating crud and is why the water drips out. A good cleaning with proper solvents from a repair guy would be the best thing to do before spending lots of money you may not be able to reclaim.

  18. Thanks a lot h90. I really appreciate your advice as I know absolutely nothing about air conditioners. I am glad to hear about the possibility of cleaing the A/C with high water pressure.

Do I need any special equipment to clean it with high water pressure? Or can i take it to a car wash and tell them to blast it with water? The jets they use in car washes look pretty powerful. Just wondered if that's what you did. Thanks in advance. I think this is worth a try (that should buy some time until the landlady finally gets round to changing the a/c altogether!).

  19. I am staying in am apartment now. The air conditioner I have now is really old (maybe 10 years or so). The dust particles in it irritate my asthma. My landlady promised 9 months ago to replace it. Water drips out of it regularly. The housekeeper gets the technician to fix it every month (that's how often the problem re-occurs!) so it seems that her solution is only temporary.

I think I will be forced to buy my own air conditioner. Perhaps I will try to negotiate a deal with the owner whereby I will buy an A/C machine myself and she can give me so many months of free rent until the cost of the AC is covered. I think she is reluctant to fork out a large sum of money for a good air con machine (although it would be an investment!)

Does anyone know which air conditioner brand is good? I want one which will not irritate my asthma. One with low power consumption will be good to keep electricity bills down.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated as I have absolutely no knowledge about a/c nor have I ever bought one.

  20. EDGE is generally 2-4 times faster. It's *not* blindingly fast, but it is better. It's more like slow (EDGE) vs excruciating (GPRS).

Nokia 6230/6230i have EDGE, I am sure there are a lot more but I haven't looked recently. Try the Nokia website.

    Thanks for superfast reply!

Oh I forgot to tell you that I am in Chiang Rai. Would that affect the speed?

Also do only nokias have EDGE or do other brands have it too?

  21. I am currently using Dtac network (post paid) and I use GPRS and bluetooth to conect to my sony ericsson k700i phone to surf the net and download news to my pda (palm zire 72). Surfing is fairly slow. I was wondering, would changing to a EDGE capable phone speed things up significantly?

    Also which phones support EDGE?

If it is significantly faster I will consider buying a new phone

  22. I used to be able to make up back up copies of vcds from my local vcd shop. A vcd should take up less than 700 MB per disc but when I put it on my pc, my pc reads that it has taken up over a GB!

Is there any software out there that can allow me to get past this? I am sick of paying fines for late returns. If I can back up copies I can watch them at my leisure
