  1. My pc hanged today. I couldnt shut down so I pulled the plug out. When it turned back on it said I needed my sound card drivers. The strange thing is that I have already had them installed. Where could they have gone? I dont have the disk for the drivers as I bought the sound card 2nd hand of a technician who installed the drivers for me.

    What can I do?

  2. I have lost my motorbike licence. I have a 7 motorbike year licence which I obtained near the 'Wat Fung Min' area of Chiang Rai at the transport dept (Thais call this area 'Con Song'). Any ideas how I can go about getting a new one? What documents do I need and how much do I need to pay? How long does it take to get a new one? I have a photocopy of my licence. Will that help? Or do I have to do the whole driving test again?

In the meantime I think I will have to avoid the cops. I doubt they will accept a xerox of my motorbike license.

You have to go the police station, report your licence has been lost, get a report from them, go to the ''Fung Bin''

with the report card and they will issue you with a new licence.

Not sure of the cost involved.

    Hope that's useful.

    Thanks.

Luckily for me the police told me I didn't need a report. They told me to just bring my passport as ID and take it to where my bike license was issued. When I got there they told me I needed my work permit as well! Anyway all is sorted now. In case this happens to anyone else on this forum, you need 2 passport photos (1 inch), a work permit, passport and 105 baht. Whole process takes 15 minutes.

At least now I no longer have to dodge the cops!

  4. I am giving a student a 1 month intensive crash course in English before she goes to the States to work as an Au Pair.

I want her to see what American kids are like before she gets there so that she knows what to expect. Are there any movies she can rent which have scenes with au pairs and kids interacting? I think the dialogues used in those scenes could be useful for teaching.

I am also thinking of using movie clips of language commonly used by American kids too e.g from the movie kindergarten cop.

    Thanks

  5. I have 8 years of EFL teaching experience in Thailand teaching mainly young adults. I would like to work in a self access learning centre so that I can gain more experience in making learning materials for students and lesson plans for teachers. I am interested in creating a library of audio, video and reading materials. I have some experience in this area but I would like to learn more. I am thinking of relocating to Bangkok and would be interested this kind of work. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I also have a bachelors degree and 1 month TEFL certificate. Do such positions exist in bangkok? If so, what kind of places advertise such positions? Universities? High Schools? Language Schools? Is the pay similar to what EFL teachers earn?

  6. Replay-Radio.com records multiple streams automatically. If you have found a better program, let me know - I use it all day and night and it automatically records radio from america - talk shows.

    Thanks

I managed to use this software. It's great to be able to listen to my old favourites again. The only problem is that I can't seem to get it to record in Stereo. When I put in my headphones into my mp3 player sound only comes out of from the right earphone. How do I get it to record in Stereo?

  7. I've had my P990 for a few months now - it used to crash when I first got it but the firmware they released in November cured the crashes for me and it's been great since

I had no idea newer firmware was out now - I'll think about upgrading (only problem is I have to re-connect the number pad to do the upgrade)

Here are the details for the new firmware.

    PDA:

    CXC162036 R4A13

    Phone:

    CXC162037 R9EA001

    Bluetooth:

    CXC162058 R5A01

    CDA:

    CDA162007/2 R4A09

I am waiting for shops to order new p990 phones with this firmware version pre-installed so that I don't have to take it to the sony ericsson centre to get it done. Hopefully the price would have dropped a bit more by then.

  8. Has anyone bought the S.E p990 smartphone or installed the new firmware recently? I've heard that the new firmware was released at the beginning of this month. Sony Ericsson claims they made about 15 or so enhancements.

Can anyone confirm that the device is now stable? A couple of months back people were still complaining of the random start ups and instabilities due to poor memory management.

If things are better now I may consider buying one. I need wifi and push email

  9. After dropping my handy Nokia Phone a few too many times, it is time to replace it. A trip to MBK is really a daunting experience. They have thousands of phones.

What I really want is a phone (new or used) that shakes like a mag 10.0 earthquaqe when I get a call. I usually can't hear the phone if it is in my pants pocket, or sometimes I am listening to music. My old Nokia phone vibrator could barely be felt if I was walking or riding the skytrain.

Anyone know a phone that shakes like a fish on land when ringing (maybe loud as a 'Who' concert too).

    Thanks,

    Drew

Nokia 5210 is fairly good and waterproof but it is a monochrome phone and can only be bought second hand. Don't pay more than 1200 baht. The vibrator is pretty strong. I would suggest (since this model is over 5 years old) that you test out the vibrator to see if it is strong enough before buying it. I have tested different 2nd hand nokia 5210's before and they all had different strengths. That is because sometimes the vibrator gets replaced with low grade parts.

  10. Question: How you record? By talking in an Microphone or what way?

If you just need to record dialouge you read or speak by yourself it's easy.

Anyway you eill need some audio software to level out the sound to that level you need.\

If you interest, I've some recorder for to do the recording and the software for leveling, PM me.

Hi. I want to use a dictating machine (digital) for recording voice conversations. I need one with a built in microphone small & light enought to carry in a shirt pocket or small bag. If possible I'd like one which can record WAV files (I've heard that WAV files have the best sound quality due to low compression).

With regards to software, which software do you recommend? It needs to do basic editing functions like cutting files to take out unwanted bits and removing unwanted sound e.g background noise, hiss, distortion. I have heard that some software can even type out the script for the recording for you. This would be good for me because it would save me time on listening to my recording several times and typing.

  11. I have a budget of 5000 baht and would like a digital voice recorder which can record dialogues of over 15 minutes. I need it to record conversations for teaching English as a foreign language (listening comprehension exercises). The device needs to be be able to record high quality audio files(better than cassette recordings) so that I can burn them to cd in the form of both wav or mp3 files and play them in the classroom. In the past I have tried relying on my 1 GB flash mp3 player (creative Muvo) and my palm zire 72 pda but the sound quality was terrible! The volume was too low (on my mp3 player) and often distorted (on my palm).

Is there a digital voice recorder out there which cost under 5000 baht which can produce better results than tape recorders, mp3 players and palms? If so, which do you recommend and where can I buy it?

  12. The thumbs up gesture is supposed to be impolite in Australia but means 'great' or 'excellent' in Thailand. Can anyone give more interesting examples?

I often see p*ssed off kids pointing with their thumb with the hand tightly clenched...

I have a feeling that it's the Thai version of the middle finger up in the air...

    :o

I've heard that means 'I hate you.'

  13. I am attending an english camp for young adults next week and I have been given the topic 'international gestures.' The purpose is to make students aware that some gestures are not universal and may cause offense in some countries. I have 10 minutes to give an introduction to this topic.

In particular I want to compare Asian (mainly Thai) gestures to Western ones. I've heard that the the 'ok hand gesture' (forefinger touching the thumb making a circle) is rude in some cultures but means 'ok' in Thailand. The thumbs up gesture is supposed to be impolite in Australia but means 'great' or 'excellent' in Thailand. Can anyone give more interesting examples?

  14. As someone who lived a year in Samutprakan, before moving to Chiang Mai I feel I can answer your air quality question.

Samutprakan makes Chiang Mai seem like a Swiss village high in the alps. It is Thailand's factory province. The air quality is terrible. It is also the countries most populous province, per square kilometre!

You should be able to pick up work, although I'm not sure if you would get straight into a university position. A lot of jobs are held by long-term residents. If you were to go you would be able to pick up something better the longer you stayed there.

Thanks a lot for the useful info. You've made it easier for me to make a decision. No point moving somewhere no matter how well paid the job is if I won't be able to breathe!

  15. I'd like to know several things about Samut Prakan. Are there any universities there where a qualified teacher can teach English as a second language? I am willing to teach either highschool or univeristy level as I have a bachelor degree, a TEFL qualification and 7 years teaching experience. Also how is the air quality there? Is it as bad as say Chiang Mai? I suffer from asthma.

    Thanks

  16. I keep getting a message on my truemove postpay account telling me to leave a voice message which the caller hears when I am unavailable. It's happened three times now. But the thing I want to know is how do I actually check my voicemail messages?

  17. Only one thing to do: Take it or leave it! No alternative!

It is probably time for you to listen to your own advice!

    Take it or leave it!

I'm tired of your bashing of the Thais. If you don't like it here, do us all a favor and go back home!

    :D :D :D

    Hey guys!

Thanks for all your responses. I can see from the responses that some people got offended. Perhaps part of it was my fault. Starting a post with negative comments. My purpose was to ask for advice and see if others had similar experiences as me. Fortunately with a bit of patience and time (and talking to the right person) the problems has now been solved. Sounds like my situation was uncommon as most of you have had better service with TTNT. Sorry if this post has gone a bit out of control. Thailand is a nice country to live in although frustrating at times when it comes to customer service. I'm glad that TTNT made an effort to rectify the situation. Let's all be friends on this forum. :o

  18. Sometimes it helps when you switch of the router, wait ten seconds and switch it on again.

What would life be without mysteries?

    Limbo :o

Thanks for all your advice guys. After two attempts at phoning the TTNT people and complaining, the technician didn't call back. So I decided to go to Big C and actually see the assistant in person. I explained my problem and she forwarded my complaint to the supervisor of the technicians. The next day a technician gave me a 'beep' missed call on my mobile followed by a longer dial tone which I picked up. He said he was in front of my apartment. So I rode back home (10km) and 3 technicians were there outside my apartment. One of the guys ran a few tests to check my connection, he asked me a few questions like 'did you drop your router?' 'where did you get this router from?' (which I replied 'it was free with the package and I didnt drop it') and the 2nd technician wrote what looked like a prescription on a piece of paper. He gave me instructions to go to Big C and show the TTNT people the paper and they have me a free replacement router! So 5 days later my internet is working again. The lesson I learned from this is that it is better to see a real human being and make a complaint rather than a phone call. Things get done much faster.

  19. Has anyone been having problems with their TT&T connection in chiang rai? Mine has been down for 4 days. I phoned them twice already and they promised a technician would phone me but so far nobody has called!

If things dont get better I may have to switch to another company. My contact is due to end soon. WHich companies give good customer service?
