In SEA, I think there is not a lot of options, but there are a few ones.

    • Hanoi (Vietnan) is pleasant most part of the year (town up North has a cooler climate).
    • Bagan and Mandalay (Myanmar) also pretty good climate, can get a little hot during the day, but cool nights.
    • Chiang Rai also cool climate, but only part of the year (Thai winter about 3/4 months only).
    • Luang Praban is cool climate most part of the year (as well other towns in North Laos).

In north of Myanmar you will find very cold climate, but no big cities (the closest and biggest is Mandalay), only small towns and villages and some places are very dangerous.

I like very much Myanmar and I will explore more places there for sure in the coming future, It is a country full of beautiful and hidden places without the exploitation of the tourism, but it can be a bit harsh to travel in such a place, because you depends a lot of transportation, if you have your own transport would be better to travel north Myanmar.

[EDIT] Forgot about cost of living:

    • Myanmar - well, believe or not, the most cost country at least for me, specially in the north.
    • Thailand (Chiang Rai) -  is the cheap one I think.
    • Laos - To rent a property in Laos can be a little difficult, because you need a lot of papers, but if you are willing to live in a hotel/guesthouse, I paid 250 Thb /day Total of 10 days in Luang Praban, the hotel offer a monthly based stay (most hotels/guesthouse up there offer similar deals) for equivalent of 6.000 Thb.
    • Vietnan - I paid a little more, because I choose a better place to stay, but for sure it has cheaper places.

All those places has acceptable internet connection and good coffee. However the best coffee and worst internet was in Laos!

thank you for this information good to start with...how much do you paid for your upgradet room in Hanoi.... I would prefer places where I can rent a modern apartment with european designs similar as thouse you´ll find in Thailand and good working Internet but general cost of living will be low...please keep me updated in case you will add new data...I also have heard about Baghio in the Philippines but humidity seems to be very high during certain parts of year and security is poor...

  3. Hi everybody,  I am new to Pattaya and I will need to visit a general medical doctor in Pattaya who also considers alternative medicine and treatments. He/She should be able to communicate in one of the following languages: English, German or Spanish. All your suggestions are welcome.

The stamp does  not say "good until", it says "admitted until".

The visa does not say "leave before", it says "enter before".

The visa does not provide a "1 year permission to stay in the country", it allows unlimited 90 days entries up until the enter before date.  It can be used to get nearly 15 months in the country.

Fine, so the "admitted until" is the date relevant for leaving the country for the first time...

Your 1-year Multiple Entry gives you 90-days stay upon every entry up until 1-year from the date of issue.  If you enter just before the "enter before" date stamped on the visa, you can get more than 1-year out of it.  If you are married to a Thai, you can get 60-day extensions (1900 Baht) for each entry at immigration, as well.

The stamp says: good until 07 May 2017  but not leave before which is shown in the visa itself and refers to the 1 year permission to stay in the country.

  6. I have a 1 year Non Immigrant "O" multiple Entry Visa and the immigration officer stamped in my passport during my first entrance to Thailand the dates 07 February 2017 good until 07 May 2017.

I have to leave Thailand this first time before 07 of May 2017?

Will the Thai immigration ask me for Proof of solvency or anything else except my passport and visa during re-entrance to Thailand?

I have regular blood tests and on some regular medication. It is becoming noticable.

Not in Thailand at present but have a good GP. I assumed it is normal.

Edit. Names in particular. OK we all forget names. But people we see every day and family?

    Embarrassing.

It has happened to me too a couple of years ago, but in my case stress has been the cause.

You wrote before you had a non-o visa which would allow a 90 day entry. There is no15 month extension possible of it. You could get  almost 15 months of total stay from a multiple entry non-o visa by doing an entry just before the enter before date on the visa.

If you had a 30 day visa exempt entry you could do an application for a 90 day non immigrant visa (category O) entry (2000 baht fee) and then during the last 30 days of that 90 day entry applying for a one year extension of stay (1900 baht fee) based upon retirement which totals to almost 15 months of total stay.

You would need at least 15 days remaining on your entry to apply for the visa. You would need to show financial proof for both steps of the process but the 800k baht would only need to be in the bank on the date of your apply for the visa.

    I forgot to mention that I have a 1-year m u l t i p l e entry "O" visa and my "entry before date" is 29. jan 2018 . Will that change my options for extension?

You could apply for an extension of stay based upon retirement during the last 30 days of any of the 90 day entries from your visa.

You will need 800k baht in a Thai bank for 60 days on the date you apply or proof of 65k baht income by way of a income letter from your embassy or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht.

I have been advised that it will be possible to ask for an extension of my present 1-month visa up to 15 months before applying for a retirement visa. Is that true?

Please be sure to understand this point clearly. Your visa must be "O-A", not "O. The "Enter Before..." must still be upcoming. If so, then do a border bounce and you will be stamped in for another 365 days. After that your O-A visa will be void and and you will need to purchase a Re-Entry Permit if you wish to leave and come back to Thailand during those 365 days. In the last 30 of those days you must go to your local Immigration office and request a 1-year extension of your Permission To Stay. Lots of info here about the requirements.

Thank you for your details. Well, my NONI visa is an "0"; Would that require making a new application?

Is your existing non-immigrant visa of the OA variety by any chance? If it is, do a border run the day before it expires and you will then be stamped into Thailand for a further year before you need to start applying for annual extensions of stay based on retirement.

Thank you for this important information. Will the border immigration ask again for application documents or is this a simple re-entrance to Thailand showing my passport only?
