  1. If they were willing to fudge the DNA results of the Koh Tao murder investigation

Then would they slant the Ebola test and come back inconclusive to save the high season?

There is a lot at stake

The fast decomposition claim is really troubling. Without insects and scavengers it seems unlikely a cardiac event would decompose beyond the point of easy identification in that time period.

Or an alternative scenario. Let's say there were scavengers like insects and then bats ate the insects.

Then ebola virus could have already found perfect carrier hosts to spread and mutate new local versions.

  2. from the other thread test results are due tomorrow.

    Let's keep our fingers crossed

BANGKOK, Oct 25 -- Laboratory tests on a Nigerian national who died in a room in the southern resort province of Phuket earlier this week are expected to be known this Sunday, said Dr Narong Sahametapat, permanent secretary of the Public Health Ministry.

Dr Narong said the Nigerian national traveled from Lagos and arrived in Phuket on October 7.

On October 15, the tourist fainted while walking on a beach and was sent to a hospital for treatment.

Following diagnosis, doctors at the hospital found that the patient previously suffered from heart disease while the Ebola virus was not found during the examination.

The patient was treated and allowed to return to his apartment.

Police found the tourist died in the room on Thursday and asked the Public Health Ministry to help determine the cause of death.

Dr Narong said since the victim had travelled from Nigeria, and although the United Nations World Health Organisation announced on October 20 that the country was free from Ebola, doctors at the hospital decided to conduct a complete diagnosis whether this person contracted the deadly disease.

It is expected that the results would be known this Sunday, he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Sopon Mekthon director-general of the Disease Control Department, said the body of the Nigerian man is being kept at a hospital under the Public Health Ministry while some 25 persons who had contact with the victim while providing treatment would be monitored closely for three weeks as required by medical standards.

So far 2,415 persons suspected of possibly contracting Ebola and arrived in the kingdom have been closely monitored by medical personnel, said Dr Sopon. But so far no one was found to have contracted the disease. (MCOT online news)

  3. I mean it seriously when I say, this is Thailand, and if it were to be found that it was Ebola in fact, would the truth win out vs the fear of losing tourist dollars. and would there be a delay in making a truthful , informative, disclosure.

Some people think the USA are hiding ebola cases, so I suppose any country could. But Thailand have been upfront in reporting this, so seems more likely that we'd get the truth. If they wanted to cover it up they would have just kept quiet. Seems pretty obvious he died of heart problems. Nigeria is currently free of Ebola, so how could he have caught it there?

except one of the symptoms of Ebola is heart failure

"Ebola is sneaky. It attacks immune cells, repressing the body’s ability to fight it off, and weakens the blood vessels, leading to internal and external bleeding. The causes of death vary from person to person. Some are simply overwhelmed by the virus and the immune response from their bodies. Others seem to die of heart attacks or respiratory distress. Hiccups are a death knell in the Ebola patient; a warning that the diaphragm is quitting."

  4. Maybe behind the scenes they are taking it really seriously.

If your a struggling African nation without a lot of tourism then no real downside of asking for immediate help.

It's somewhat unusual here because raising the flag of alarm would be a death blow to local industry and anger many unsavory and intimidating interests.

Kind of an all or nothing approach

    or the proverbial

stuck between a rock and a hard place

  5. It's certainly a possibility but the first Texas guy who died was looked at also and discharged.

Anyone have any theories of the very decomposed characterization of the corpse?

How long does a post mortem test take in BKK?

Has to be some pressure to not associate ebola with Phuket right before the critical tourist high season.

I am sure they are hoping for the best but are they preparing for the worst?

  6. What do we know based on the news story about Mr. Robert?

He collapsed and was taken the hospital and they diagnosed him with a heart problem and released.

  7. I hope they can create a safer bicycle environment over time.

I have been lucky around Chiang Mai but a lot of close ones over the years and for the most part I try to ride rural roads and trails.

I wonder how people think Thailand is so safe for cycling when the country is rated 2nd or 3rd most dangerous in the world for driving.

Bicyclists are on the same infrastructure for the most part.

  8. Yeah and the night before he was around town in taxi's and went bowling. They best sanitize all the balls there.

Good luck finding all the people he came in contact with to quarantine

CMJ/NJ .... now you have a few cannonballs in your washing machine

What happens to financial markets ? Will traders get spooked?

    Interesting times

  9. China has an influence on Thailand also and don't want people thinking out of the box

China had a bad experience with the opium wars with losing Hong Kong and Macau.

Would be encouraging if the USA's progressively relaxed stance would influence Thailand but doubt any change soon.

The rest of East Asia powers are pretty anti drug with Japan, Taiwan and Korea being harsh.

I think I read it's legal in North Korea but I doubt its any Amsterdam or Denver experience

  10. ^^^ I remember this old timer in Virginia telling me how he had been driving for 50+ years and never had a bad accident. Didn't even bother wearing his safety belt.

Years later I heard he had an accident and partially went thru the windshield and died months later after a series of complications.

Some people plan, some people don't.

Some people are lucky and some not so much.

At the very least the economic complications of a contagion are interesting to consider.

  11. Probably a contributing reason the US military has ships off the coast of West Africa.

What if the S.S. Radical Islam rolled in and offered a free cruise to people who wanted to flee?

Then set sail for where? South or Central America maybe?

  12. This is morbid, but I believe that if an African comes down with Ebola in one of these Asian countries, they will just kill him. It will be cheaper and easier, and no one would ever hear about it. None of these countries are strangers to killing people.

The connundrum with that scenario is that if people get a whiff of euthanising patients then sick people will not seek treatment and try to ride it out with robitussin or whatever.
