Your company could open a representative office in Thailand and hire you under a foreign entity's representation. But as far as I know that's limited to 2? employees, and all documentation needs to come from abroad. It is also time limited.

So can I open a representative office of my US company in Thailand and hire myself? How much money is involved?

  2. For case 3

He could have got a Non-O visa from a neighboring country that does not require financial proof. It is little strange they won't allow him on a visa exempt. It does not sound right to me. There is more to the story or it seems the OP just made it up for bashing Thailand's immigration. His post sounds like a person trying assert his privilege and rights to stay in a foreign country. From the the all the posts here my conclusion is they deny entries to people who are trying to stay in Thailand on Tourist visas or visa exempt.

The problem is it's quite likely the Elite Visa schemes may not be around in 10+ years. Wealthy nations don't like having these backdoors for numerous reasons (don't need the money, it's a bad look, etc)

How do you know it is not going to be around 10+ years? If they eliminate elite, the existing visa holders will be grand fathered. Wealthy nations (like EU nations, US, Singapore), still offer residency purchase. US has recently increased the price because there is lot of fraud and scam going there.

What would the guarantor actually be required to guarantee, surely if someone opens a savings account you’re depositing funds, not borrowing, what’s there to guarantee?

They can go after the guarantor if you're found to use the account to engage in scam and money laundering,

  5. With an METV also, there is a risk of entry denial as you have to leave and enter every two/three months. If you want to subject yourself to humiliation and inconveniences, then you can choose a land border crossing (avoiding Poipet) for each entry for safe bet.   There is no renewal of any type of visa. Visa is used to enter the country (it cannot be renewed). Only your permitted  to stay in the country can be extended further for another 30-day for each entry. If you don't know the difference between a visa and permitted to stay date, I would suggest first you educate yourself on this two aspect, especially w.r.t Thailand's visa and permitted to stay date.

Overall though, I'd say the decline (in attractiveness for Western expats) is real and has been accelerating.

What kind of decline? Can you please elaborate. I am visiting Thailand for 17-years and now spend 6 month in Thailand, 3-month in Spain, and 3-month Hawaii. I have not felt any decline. More shopping plazas, cheaper airlines tickets to more destinations, better infrastructure, more availability of technology. I cant get my head around the decline part. May be more smog and dirty and crowded beaches.

Has anyone taken out a loan to obtain the Thai Elite? I am curious what loans were available in your home country for this type of expense.

Personal loan, HELOC, home improvement, second mortgage, credit card cash advance, buying gold using credit card and then selling for cash, business improvement loan, you name it. it is available.

my mate has been using an o visa for years and now he cant get one. he usually stays in thailand for 5 months doing a border run after 3 months. he says they have stopped doing them in england. any ideas

What is your question? To you want to get confirmation if they have indeed stopped issuing Non-O or nor not? From reports posted here, it looks like they are not issuing any more.

This is incredibly sad and I hope those of you on here with the necessary funds will not be dicks about it.

He is a father, yet has to leave Thailand because he doesn't have the ridiculous amount of money that the immigration say that he must have.

Shame on any who criticise him for this, you should bow UR head in shame.

A person who does not have 40K/month income marries and becomes a father (most probably at 50+ age). How many people in their home country do that? Only in Thailand and I wonder why and how. They certainly won't go to Moldova and do that.

They also offered (I declined) paying 500 baht fine for 3 months

500 fine for 3-month extension is cheap. Why did't you take that offer? Sorry, understand now. 500BHT/day for three months for over stay. Definitely not an acceptable options. If you have an account in Bangkok bank, you can use Transferwise and select the option Money to live in Thailand and it comes properly coded for immigration to accept.

They would not accept all my ATM receipts.

This is a hard lesson learned and a word of warning.

I don't thing anybody reading Thai visa or who has some rational to find out before hand, would go to immigration office with ATM slips and expect a renewal. And, who keeps their ATM slips? I never take any paper slip from ATM.

Even if I had 400K to put in the bank - I would still have the same problem - no way of verifying where the income came from.

Money (400K) in bank method does not require verification of fund where it came from. Money every month (40K) depends on IO. Sometimes they ask for verification letter which is though moronic but as a foreigner you cant do anything about it because you have subjected yourself to dance to their tune by relocating to Thailand.
